The easiest online Halloween game night has one clearly chosen main game, a backup activity, and a tested video-call setup. Invite friends with the start time, call platform, controller requirements, and optional costume or snack theme. Before guests arrive, launch the game, confirm screen sharing and audio, then keep the lobby code private until everyone is ready.

For a concrete format, Jackbox works with one host copy: the host runs the game and shares its screen through a conferencing app or Discord, while guests join the call and use an internet-connected phone, tablet, or computer as a browser controller. The same planning principles work for other remote games, but player limits, purchases, controllers, and privacy settings must be checked for the specific title.

1. Pick a format that fits your group

Start with the devices your friends already own rather than choosing a game first. Decide whether everyone will watch a shared screen, whether each person needs a separate controller device, and whether guests must install or buy anything. For a friends-only event, a normal video call with screen sharing is usually the simplest explanation: everyone joins one call, the host runs the game, and players follow the on-screen instructions.

Jackbox’s official remote-play guidance describes three practical approaches. The exact limits below are publisher statements from a support page published December 5, 2023, so confirm the current limit for your selected title and platform before sending invitations.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Remote method How it works Published capacity guidance Best fit
Video-conference call with screen sharing The host runs the game and shares the game window while everyone talks in the call. The game’s own player limit applies; the call service may impose a separate limit. Guests who already know how to join a call and use a second device as a controller.
Steam Remote Play Together One owner streams a local co-op title to remote participants through Steam. Jackbox describes up to four players, or more with faster connections. Groups using a compatible Steam title and a host with a dependable upload connection.
Discord screen sharing The host connects the game and voice call in Discord and shares the game view. Jackbox describes game and video connection for up to nine friends. Groups already organized in a Discord server or direct call.

Compare the options on six practical questions: which devices are available, how many people will actively play, whether a second device is needed, whether shared audio is clear, whether the game offers audience play or extended timers, and whether guests need a purchase or installation. Do not assume that a feature documented for Jackbox exists in an unrelated game.

2. Choose one main game and one backup

Pick a main title that the expected number of active players can enter, then prepare a backup that needs little setup. Jackbox says most of its games support one to eight active players, and that many titles allow additional people to join as an audience who can influence the result. Treat those figures as a publisher-stated range, not a universal rule: check the selected game’s current listing and in-game instructions.

Use the main game for the shared experience

Choose a title whose prompts can be read easily over a streamed screen and whose rules can be explained in a minute or two. If your group includes people who arrive late, audience participation can let them watch and sometimes affect the outcome without displacing an active player. Confirm whether the specific title supports that mode.

Keep the backup independent of the game purchase

A backup prevents a late download, incompatibility, or connection failure from ending the evening. Prepare a short trivia round, spooky would-you-rather questions, or a costume show-and-tell. These are low-preparation activities, so everyone can participate through the call while you repair the main setup.

3. Tell guests exactly what to expect

Send one invitation containing the date, time zone, call link, game name, platform, and a short equipment checklist. State whether costumes and themed food are optional, and explain that players may need a phone or another browser-capable device in addition to the screen used for the call.

  • Give a precise start time and an arrival window for audio checks.
  • Name the platform guests should use for the call, such as Zoom or Discord.
  • Explain whether they need a second internet-connected device for a browser controller.
  • Tell guests not to share the lobby code publicly.
  • Include a simple theme prompt, such as “wear a costume if you want” or “bring a favorite Halloween snack.”
  • Provide the backup activity in one sentence so nobody is surprised if the game changes.

If your group spans time zones, write the time with its zone abbreviation and repeat it in the calendar invitation. Ask guests to test their microphone before the event instead of spending the first round solving basic audio problems.

4. Prepare the host setup

Hardware and network

The host needs a compatible laptop, PC, console, smart TV, or other supported device that can run the selected game and show it to remote guests. Jackbox’s model uses a laptop or PC running the game, with guests viewing the shared screen and controlling play from their own internet-capable devices. A separate laptop purchase is unnecessary if you already own a compatible device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use wired internet when possible. A wired connection can reduce wireless interference while the host is simultaneously running the game, uploading a screen share, and carrying voice chat. Close downloads, cloud backups, and other high-bandwidth applications before guests arrive.

Install and test before inviting people

  1. Install or update the game on the host device.
  2. Open the call platform and confirm that the correct microphone and speakers are selected.
  3. Start a private test call with one friend or a second account.
  4. Share only the game window if the platform allows it, and verify that game audio is audible without creating an echo.
  5. Check that you can switch between the call and the game. If a full-screen game makes that difficult, turn off full-screen mode in the lobby settings; Jackbox’s Party Pack 10 guidance specifically recommends this approach.
  6. Write down the backup activity and the steps for rejoining the call in case the host disconnects.

5. Set up a Jackbox-style browser controller

Jackbox’s official flow is useful because it separates the host’s game screen from the players’ controls. One person buys and installs a Party Pack, launches a game, and displays the lobby. Guests watch that shared screen, open jackbox.tv in a phone or other internet-capable browser, and enter the room code shown by the host. The controller works in a browser; guests do not need a separate mobile app or Jackbox account.

Only the host needs the game copy for this arrangement. Players should still have a reliable way to view the shared screen while entering answers on their controller device. A phone is convenient, but a tablet or computer browser can work if the guest can keep the game view visible elsewhere.

6. Keep the lobby private

Do not display a join code to an open audience before invited players are ready. Jackbox recommends hiding the lobby screen at the beginning of each new game, sending the room code privately to invited players, allowing them to enter, and then revealing the shared game screen. Some titles also offer password-protected rooms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the game and reach its lobby.
  2. Hide or obscure the lobby code while the call is being set up.
  3. Send the code individually or in the private event chat.
  4. Wait until the invited players have joined.
  5. Reveal the shared game screen and start the round.

Private code sharing lowers the chance of strangers entering a publicly visible lobby, but it does not make the video call itself private. Use the call platform’s waiting-room, invite, and moderation controls when those are available.

7. Run the evening in a simple sequence

Welcome and sound check

Admit guests, ask everyone to say a quick hello, and confirm that the host’s voice and shared game audio are clear. Remind players which device is for viewing and which is for entering answers. Mute microphones when someone’s speakers create an echo, then use the call’s chat for urgent technical messages.

Explain the rules before revealing the first prompt

Tell players how to join, where to submit answers, and how scoring works. Explain whether spectators can join as an audience. Let guests know that they can ask for a repeat of a rule before the timer starts, rather than interrupting every prompt.

Start with a short Halloween warm-up

A ten-minute opening activity gives late arrivals time to settle in. Use one spooky poll, a few would-you-rather questions, or a costume show-and-tell. Keep it optional and fast; the main game should remain the focus.

Manage the pace

Remote players often need more time to read prompts and submit answers. Jackbox says many of its games include extended-timer settings. Enable a longer timer when guests are using small screens, joining through a slower connection, or playing in a mixed-age group. Pause between rounds for water, snacks, or a connection check instead of letting silence build.

An example 75-minute schedule

This is a flexible example, not a required duration. Adjust it to your chosen game and the energy of the group.

Minutes Activity Host action
0–10 Arrivals and audio checks Admit guests, confirm microphones, and explain the two-device setup.
10–20 Halloween warm-up Run a short poll, trivia prompt, or costume show-and-tell.
20–60 Two short game rounds Share the game, keep the code private, and use extended timers if needed.
60–70 Costume or story break Invite voluntary costume details or a favorite spooky story.
70–75 Screenshot and sign-off Take a group screenshot and state how guests can reconnect if the call drops.

Make the theme memorable without adding technical risk

Use Halloween in three visible places: the invitation, one opening activity, and the call’s visual or clothing prompt. Ask guests to wear costumes if they want, bring a favorite snack or drink, or choose a spooky virtual background. Play a Halloween playlist before the game begins, but stop or lower it when the host needs to explain rules. A single themed question in the arrival chat can occupy people while you admit the rest of the group.

Keep costumes and food optional. Some guests may be joining from work, a shared room, a phone, or a different cultural setting. A theme should make joining easier, not become an extra requirement.

Plan for children and mixed-comfort groups

Jackbox notes that its titles are rated Teen, while some recent titles provide a family-friendly setting, moderation of player-created content, and strict profanity filtering. Check the exact game and its current settings before inviting children. Do not rely on a general “family-friendly” assumption based on the series name.

Troubleshooting branches

Guests can hear voices but not the game

Stop the round, verify that the host is sharing the game window rather than only the desktop, and check the call platform’s “share audio” option. Ask guests to confirm their output device and volume. If the platform cannot carry game audio reliably, keep voice chat in the call and let the game’s sounds remain optional.

The game is full-screen and the host cannot reach the call

Exit or disable full-screen mode in the lobby settings, then restart screen sharing. Jackbox’s Party Pack 10 guidance specifically recommends turning off full-screen mode when switching back to the call is difficult.

A player cannot join the browser controller

Have the player open the controller page in a current browser, check the room code for transcription errors, and switch from a congested network if possible. The player does not need a separate Jackbox mobile app or account for the browser-controller flow, but they do need internet access and a way to view the shared game.

A stranger appears in the lobby

Hide the lobby, stop sharing the code, remove the unexpected participant if the title allows it, and issue a new room code by restarting the game. Send the replacement code only through the private event chat.

The host disconnects

Tell everyone in advance who can open the backup activity. If the host returns, restart the game and privately distribute the new code. A prepared backup keeps the call active while the host repairs the connection.

Host checklist

  • Main game selected and backup activity written down.
  • Current player limit and audience rules checked for the exact title.
  • Host device updated and connected to dependable internet.
  • Microphone, speakers, screen sharing, and game audio tested.
  • Full-screen setting adjusted if switching to the call is difficult.
  • Invite includes time zone, platform, game, controller needs, and optional theme.
  • Lobby code hidden until invited players are ready.
  • Extended timer, family-friendly, moderation, and profanity settings reviewed when relevant.
  • One person knows the backup plan if the host disconnects.

What makes the night work

The winning formula is operational rather than elaborate: one tested host setup, a clear invitation, private lobby access, a brief warm-up, and a backup that can run without downloads. Use Jackbox’s one-host-copy browser-controller model when it matches your devices, but verify every game’s current player count, audience support, platform compatibility, and content settings. That preparation leaves the Halloween details—costumes, snacks, music, and stories—to add atmosphere without becoming another source of friction.
