The reliable way to host a GregTech New Horizons (GTNH) server is to use the official Server ZIP for your pack version, pair it with the Java runtime that ZIP requires, start it once to generate its files, accept the EULA, and then run it from a terminal with enough memory. A managed Minecraft host is quickest; self-hosting on Linux or a VPS gives you more control; Docker is practical if you already operate containers.
Choose a hosting method
GTNH is a community Minecraft 1.7.10 modpack running on Forge 1.7.10. It is not installed like a normal vanilla server: the server archive, Java runtime, Forge files, and client pack must all match. Decide where the process will run before downloading anything.

Managed hosting
Many Minecraft hosts provide a one-click “GT New Horizons” installer in their control panel. This avoids installing Java, sizing the JVM, opening a firewall, and maintaining the operating system. Select GTNH in the installer, choose a plan with the memory you need, and let the panel deploy the server. Panel labels change, so an older tutorial may show a different path; one provider’s guide specifically notes that its instructions predate a one-click installer update. Use the current panel’s GTNH template rather than copying an old screenshot.
Managed hosting is the sensible choice when you want a server online quickly or do not administer Linux. You still need to select the exact GTNH version, keep clients on that version, and maintain backups. The host handles the machine and Java layer, but it cannot make an incompatible client connect.

Self-hosting on a computer or VPS
Self-hosting gives you direct access to files, logs, JVM options, backups, and upgrades. It also makes you responsible for Java, available RAM, storage, firewall rules, operating-system updates, and keeping the process running after a disconnect. A VPS is usually preferable to a home computer if you need a stable public endpoint and do not want to configure residential-network access.
Docker
If you already run containers, the docker-minecraft-server image supports GTNH with TYPE: GTNH starting in image version 2025.12.0. The GTNH wiki guidance for updating a container is to use the Java 17–2x server build. Containerization simplifies repeatable deployment, but you still need persistent storage, a matching client version, sufficient memory, and a backup strategy.
Requirements before installation
- GTNH server archive: download a Server ZIP from the Server ZIP section of gtnewhorizons.com/downloads. Do not use a Prism, MultiMC, CurseForge, or client ZIP for the server.
- Matching Java: the Java major version must match the archive you downloaded. A mismatch commonly prevents startup.
- Forge: a self-run server uses Forge 1.7.10, which is the loader for this pack.
- Memory: the most consistent starting value in the available guides is 6 GB assigned to the JVM. Some sources call 4 GB the minimum, while others recommend 6 GB or more and roughly 1 GB extra per player. Treat 6 GB as a practical starting point, not a universal hard minimum.
- Storage: one hosting guide lists at least 20 GB, but that figure was not verified in the official wiki page body. Leave additional headroom for world growth, logs, downloads, and backups.
- CPU: prioritize strong single-thread performance over a high core count. Minecraft 1.7.10 does not distribute its main simulation evenly across many cores.
- Network access: players must be able to reach the machine’s Minecraft service through your host or firewall. A managed host normally exposes this for you; on a VPS or home system you must configure it yourself.
Pick the correct Java and GTNH build
GTNH publishes different server archives for different Java generations. Download the archive first, read its name, and install the corresponding runtime instead of assuming that the newest Java is always correct.

Java 25 is compatible only with GTNH 2.8 and later. For older releases, Java 17 through 21 is the stated choice. The Java 17+ build’s main reason to avoid it is Thermos compatibility; if your setup depends on Thermos, use the release’s Java 8 option instead.
Version information has changed during the current release cycle. One hosting page lists 2.8.4 as the stable release and 2.9.0 as beta, while an upgrade guide says the 2.9 line supports both Java 8 and Java 17–25. Because those statements do not establish whether 2.9 is stable today, verify the label on the official downloads page immediately before installation.
Download the official server files
- Open the GTNH downloads page.
- Find the Server ZIP section, not the client or launcher downloads.
- Choose the exact GTNH version your players intend to use.
- Choose the Java variant that matches the runtime you will install. The site’s direct links follow a pattern such as
https://downloads.gtnewhorizons.com/ServerPacks/GT_New_Horizons_<version>_Server_Java_17-25.zip; select the real version shown on the page rather than typing a guessed URL. - Save the archive on the server machine and record the version and Java variant. That record prevents a later update from silently mixing packages.
Never turn a client instance into a server by copying its files. Client distributions contain different launchers and configuration assumptions. Use the server archive supplied for that purpose.

Install a self-hosted server on Linux
The following sequence reflects the Linux guidance for a Java 25-compatible GTNH release. If your archive requires Java 8 or Java 17, install that major version instead and use the launch instructions shipped with the archive.
1. Install the matching Java runtime
For a release that explicitly supports Java 25, the guide uses Debian/Ubuntu’s package manager:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install openjdk-25-jdk
java -versionThe final command should report the major version required by your ZIP. If it reports another version, correct JAVA_HOME or your system alternatives before continuing. Installing several Java versions is possible, but the server must resolve the intended executable when it starts.
2. Create a dedicated directory and unpack the ZIP
Use a directory owned by the account that will run Minecraft, rather than operating the server as root. Extract the archive there with your distribution’s unzip tool or file manager. Keep the entire extracted tree together: the launch files, libraries, configuration, world, and any generated scripts are expected to be relative to that directory.

Run the supplied server start script or command from the server directory. The first launch creates configuration files and normally stops when the EULA has not been accepted. Open eula.txt, change:
eula=falseto:
eula=trueSave the file, then start the server again. Accepting the EULA is a prerequisite for a normal startup; it is not a substitute for agreeing to Mojang’s terms yourself.

4. Run it from a terminal
Keep the process attached to a terminal or a proper service manager so you can see logs and stop it cleanly. The administration guides warn that double-clicking a script can launch it in the background, making a controlled shutdown harder. From the server directory, a Java 17/25 installation may use the following command shown in the Oracle Cloud guide:
java -Xms6G -Xmx10G -XX:+UseZGC -Dfml.readTimeout=180 @java9args.txt -jar lwjgl3ify-forgePatches.jar noguiThis command starts with a 6 GB heap and permits growth to 10 GB, enables Z Garbage Collector, lengthens Forge’s read timeout, loads arguments from java9args.txt, launches the GTNH Forge patch JAR, and suppresses the graphical interface. Use the files and launch command included with your specific server ZIP if they differ; do not copy a Java 17/25 command onto a Java 8 archive.

- Wait for the log to indicate that the server has finished loading rather than assuming the process is ready when the window appears.
- Check that a world directory and configuration files were created.
- Connect with a client running the exact same GTNH version and modpack configuration.
- Stop the server through its console command before maintenance or copying files; terminating the process can leave world data incomplete.
Configure memory, storage, and access
Memory sizing
Guidance differs: one source says 4 GB minimum, several recommend 6 GB or more, and another suggests about 1 GB beyond the baseline for each additional player. The supplied start command’s 6 GB initial heap is the most consistent baseline. Monitor the machine’s total RAM, not just the JVM value: the operating system, Java overhead, file cache, and other services also need memory. Increase -Xmx only when the host has unused RAM and logs or pauses show that the current ceiling is inadequate.
Disk planning and backups
The world can grow substantially as players explore. A guide cites 20 GB as an official recommendation, but that number is not confirmed by the wiki excerpt. Reserve more than the initial archive size, especially if you enable automated backups. Server Utilities backups take approximately the size of the world each time, so several generations can consume many gigabytes. Store at least one backup outside the live server directory or on a different machine; a disk failure otherwise destroys both copies.
Firewall and reachability
On a VPS, allow the game service through the provider firewall and the operating-system firewall. On a home connection, configure the router and check whether your ISP permits inbound hosting. Test from a second network rather than relying on a connection from the same LAN. A managed host’s panel normally supplies the public address and access rule, but you still need to give players the correct address and port shown by that panel.
Keep factories running while players are offline
GTNH’s Server Utilities settings for chunk claiming and chunk loading are off by default. If a production area must continue processing while nobody is logged in, edit serverutilities.cfg and set both options to true:

chunk_claiming=true
chunk_loading=trueApply the change during a maintenance stop and verify the exact key spelling in your generated configuration. Forced chunk loading increases CPU, memory, and power use, so enable it only for areas that genuinely need unattended production.
Upload an existing world
You can migrate an existing GTNH world by stopping the destination server, copying the complete world directory over SFTP, and starting the server again. One administration guide recommends FileZilla for large-world transfers because a graphical client can resume and show progress. Preserve the destination’s original folder until you have confirmed that the upload works, and do not copy files while either server is writing to the world.
Set up GTNH with Docker
Use Docker only if you are comfortable managing volumes, container logs, image updates, and host-level backups. The supported configuration uses the docker-minecraft-server image with TYPE: GTNH; support begins with image version 2025.12.0. Persist the server directory in a host volume so recreating a container does not erase the world. When updating, select the Java 17–2x GTNH build advised by the wiki, and keep the container’s Java setting aligned with that archive.
Before replacing an image, stop the container cleanly and copy the persistent volume. Treat an image update and a GTNH version update as separate changes: update one, test startup and player access, then proceed to the next.

Make client and server versions agree
GTNH clients and servers must run the exact same pack version. A client on 2.8.4 cannot be assumed to join a server on 2.9.0, even if both are called GTNH. Write the chosen version in your server’s player instructions and require every player to update before troubleshooting Java or network errors. When an update is planned:
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server cleanly.
- Make a complete copy of the server folder, including the world, configuration, scripts, and libraries.
- Check the downloads page for the new archive and its Java variant.
- Install or select the matching Java runtime.
- Apply the update according to the release’s instructions, preserving the backup until players have entered the updated world successfully.
- Have every player install the same GTNH version before reopening the server.
Do not delete the old server folder until the new build has loaded, a player has tested a known area, and your backup can be restored.

Troubleshoot the failures that matter most
The server exits immediately
Check the Java major version against the ZIP name first. A Java 8 archive launched with Java 25, or a Java 17/25 archive launched with an older runtime, can fail before Forge loads. Then run the command in a terminal so the error remains visible, confirm that you are in the extracted server directory, and verify that referenced files such as java9args.txt and lwjgl3ify-forgePatches.jar exist.
The process says the EULA is not accepted
Stop the process, open eula.txt, change only eula=false to eula=true, save it, and start again. If the file keeps reverting, check directory permissions and make sure you are editing the file in the directory that the launch command actually uses.
Players receive a mod or version mismatch
Compare the full GTNH version on the client and server, not just the Minecraft base version. Reinstall the client pack from the same release line selected on the downloads page. A server update without a matching client update is the usual cause of this branch.
Lag appears as more players join
Watch heap usage and CPU saturation before adding JVM flags. Start from the 6 GB baseline, leave memory for the operating system, and increase the maximum only when the host has capacity. Because the main game thread benefits from fast single-core performance, moving to a faster CPU can help more than adding idle cores. Disable unnecessary forced chunk loading and review the number of always-active areas.
The world disappears after a container or host change
Verify that the world directory is on persistent storage and that backups were taken before the change. In Docker, inspect the mounted volume; on a VPS, confirm the extracted path used by the new launch command. Restore to a separate test directory first so you can validate the backup without overwriting the only live copy.
Operational checklist
- Record the GTNH version, archive variant, Java version, memory settings, and host address.
- Keep the server process in a managed terminal or service so it can be stopped cleanly and restarted after maintenance.
- Back up the complete server folder before every version change.
- Check backup disk usage because each Server Utilities backup is approximately the world’s size.
- Review
serverutilities.cfgafter upgrades; chunk claiming and loading are disabled by default. - Test a restore periodically instead of assuming that a copied file is usable.
- Tell players the exact version they must install and update that notice whenever the server changes.
Which approach should you use?
Choose managed hosting when speed and reduced administration matter more than control. Choose a Linux computer or VPS when you need direct access to JVM settings, files, and automation. Choose Docker when your existing operations already revolve around containers and persistent volumes. In every case, success depends on the same three controls: an official server archive, a matching Java runtime, and exact client/server version parity.
