Use Amazon EC2 when you need complete control of the operating system and server process; use Amazon GameLift Servers when you need managed session placement, fleets and scaling; and compare a VPS or managed game host when your community server is modest and a predictable, simpler bill matters more. There is no universally cheapest option. Your result depends on concurrent players, CPU and RAM demand, region, bandwidth, DDoS protection, backups, and how much administration you will do yourself.
This guide covers the AWS deployment paths, a practical EC2 setup, GameLift pricing models, AWS cost examples, and lower-cost alternatives such as DigitalOcean, OVHcloud and game-specific hosts.
Pick the hosting model before choosing an instance
The right service follows the game’s networking model and your operations capacity. A persistent sandbox world has different needs from short competitive matches that start and end as sessions.

| Self-managed VPS | Small, persistent community servers with steady demand | Virtual machine and software stack | Less orchestration and protection than a hyperscale platform |
| Managed game-server host | Beginners who value one-click installation and support | Game configuration and player access | Provider markup and fewer infrastructure choices |
How to host a game server on Amazon EC2
EC2 is the most flexible AWS route. You launch a virtual machine, install the dedicated-server software, expose only its required ports, and operate it like a physical server. The following workflow applies to Linux or Windows; the game’s documentation determines the executable, dependencies and port numbers.

1. Measure the workload you actually need
- Record average and peak concurrent players, not just the community’s member count.
- Determine whether the game uses one persistent world or many simultaneous sessions.
- Measure CPU behavior, especially single-thread performance, during saves, map generation and combat spikes.
- List RAM, storage growth, mod or plugin overhead, bandwidth and backup-retention requirements.
- Choose a region near most players. A cheaper, distant region can produce worse latency than a slightly more expensive local one.
2. Select an operating system and instance
Choose a current Linux distribution when the dedicated server supports it and you are comfortable administering Linux. Choose Windows when the game or its tooling requires Windows. Compare instance families by sustained CPU performance, memory, attached storage and network capacity rather than by vCPU count alone. Keep a smaller test instance separate from the production machine so updates and mods can be validated safely.
3. Launch the instance
- In the AWS console, open EC2, select Instances, then Launch instances.
- Choose the operating-system image, instance type, storage volume and an SSH key pair for Linux or an administrator password workflow for Windows.
- Create or select a security group. Add the game’s documented TCP and UDP ports, and nothing else that players do not need.
- Restrict SSH or RDP to your administration IP range instead of opening those ports to the entire internet.
- Review the public IPv4, subnet and region before launching. Put the instance and any database or monitoring components in the intended region from the start.
4. Install and pin the server software
Connect over SSH or RDP, apply operating-system updates, install the game’s stated runtime libraries, and download the dedicated-server build from its official distribution channel. Keep the executable and configuration in a dedicated data directory rather than a temporary folder. Pin a known-good game version when mods or plugins are involved; automatic updates can make a previously working world fail at the next restart.
On Linux, a service manager such as systemd can restart the process after a crash and start it after a reboot. A terminal multiplexer is useful during initial setup, but it should not be your only process supervisor. On Windows, configure the server as a service or use a scheduled task with restart-on-failure behavior.

The EC2 security group is a stateful firewall, but the guest operating system may have its own firewall as well. Open the same game ports in both places when required. Bind the server to the intended network interface, set the query or discovery port separately if the game uses one, and test from a network outside your home connection. Never expose an administration panel, database port or remote console to all addresses when a restricted rule will work.
6. Make saves durable
Store world files on persistent block storage and confirm where the game writes autosaves, logs and crash dumps. Schedule snapshots or file-level backups, retain more than one recovery point, and test restoring a copy. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption. Include configuration files, permission lists, mod manifests and ban lists in the backup set, not just the world directory.
7. Monitor before inviting players
- Watch CPU utilization per core, memory pressure, disk latency, free storage and network traffic.
- Alert on process exit, repeated crashes, failed backups and low disk space.
- Keep game logs long enough to diagnose a disconnect or exploit, but rotate them so they cannot fill the volume.
- Record player latency and server tick or frame metrics when the game exposes them.
8. Automate routine operations
Use scheduled start and stop actions when the community has predictable hours. For variable demand, automation can add or remove instances, but persistent worlds need a handoff plan: stop accepting new players, flush saves, detach or replicate storage, then terminate only after the data is safe. Test the automation with a disposable server before attaching it to a valuable world.

When Amazon GameLift Servers is the better AWS choice
GameLift managed hosting builds fleets from EC2 instances or managed containers and supplies game-session placement, fleet management and scaling features. It is designed for session-based multiplayer rather than a single manually maintained world. You provide a compatible server build and define fleet, runtime and scaling settings; AWS handles much of the host orchestration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesManaged GameLift cost drivers
Your bill varies with AWS Region, instance family and size, operating system, and the mix of Spot and On-Demand capacity. AWS states that eligible generation-6-and-later GameLift instance types have network bandwidth in and out at no additional charge, for both On-Demand and Spot capacity, with no commitment required. That does not make every GameLift deployment free: compute, storage and other AWS services still apply.
Spot capacity can reduce compute cost, but it can be interrupted. Use it only when your fleet can drain or replace a host without losing an active match, and keep enough On-Demand capacity for the availability level you promise.
GameLift Anywhere
Anywhere registers server processes running on hardware you supply while GameLift handles session-related integration and accounting. The published 12-month free tier is 3,000 placed sessions and 500,000 server-process connection minutes per month. The example rates after that allowance are $0.0012 per placed game session and $0.000011 per server-process connection minute. Those charges are in addition to the cost of the hardware, colocation or cloud machines running your processes.
When a custom EC2, ECS or EKS design is more appropriate
GameLift is not a universal replacement for a game’s architecture. AWS says that large-scale MMOs requiring world partitioning for thousands of players are typically better served by custom solutions on Amazon EC2, Amazon ECS or Amazon EKS. In that design, separate services can own simulation zones, matchmaking, persistence, chat and telemetry, while an orchestrator places workloads where capacity is available. The engineering and operations burden is substantially higher, but the architecture can match a world that cannot be represented as independent short-lived sessions.

AWS publishes scenario examples rather than a single game-server price. One current example models a 5-versus-5 competitive shooter with 50,000 peak concurrent users, 10 players per session, eight sessions per instance and c6a.4xlarge On-Demand capacity.

| AWS scenario | Published monthly estimate | Assumptions and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| On-Demand capacity | $111,566.81 | AWS example for 50,000 peak concurrent users, 10 players per session, eight sessions per c6a.4xlarge instance |
| Stated Spot mix | $88,124 | The same AWS example with a Spot mix; AWS describes this as a 21% saving |
These are AWS modeling examples, not quotes for every game or region. They do not tell you what a small Minecraft, Rust or Valheim world will cost. For your estimate, calculate instance-hours for the expected average and peak load, then add storage, snapshots, public IP usage where applicable, monitoring, data transfer, support and any database or orchestration services. Price the normal case separately from a peak-event case so an occasional tournament does not force you to pay for peak capacity all month.
Is GameLift cheaper than running EC2 directly?
Sometimes, but the answer depends on what you include. Direct EC2 has a simpler compute bill and no GameLift session-management charge, but you must build and operate placement, fleet health, scaling, deployment and recovery. GameLift can lower the labor and engineering cost of those functions while adding service-specific charges and constraints.
| Question | Direct EC2 | GameLift managed fleets |
|---|---|---|
| Infrastructure control | Full operating-system and process control | Fleet and build controls within the GameLift model |
| Scaling | You design and operate it | Built-in fleet and placement capabilities |
| Best workload | Persistent worlds, custom processes and unusual networking | Session-based matches with repeatable server builds |
| Failure handling | Your supervisor, health checks and replacement logic | Managed fleet health and replacement features, subject to service limits |
| Cost sensitivity | Instance, storage, transfer and operations time | Region, instance, OS, Spot mix and GameLift usage dimensions |
Compare both on total cost of ownership: infrastructure plus the hours required to patch, monitor, respond to incidents and build automation. A small community server may be cheaper on a single EC2 instance even if GameLift is more efficient at scale. A rapidly changing competitive game can reach the opposite result when managed placement and autoscaling replace substantial engineering work.
Cheaper alternatives to AWS
DigitalOcean Droplets
DigitalOcean describes Droplets as Linux virtual machines with hourly and monthly plans. A Droplet can be a straightforward home for a small persistent server when you want a fixed machine and a simple control panel. You remain responsible for operating-system updates, game installation, firewall rules, backups, monitoring, bandwidth, region selection and DDoS planning. Recheck current plan prices and included transfer before committing; both prices and limits can change.
OVHcloud VPS or dedicated servers
OVHcloud positions VPS and dedicated servers around price-to-performance, with isolated virtual-machine allocations for VPS customers. A dedicated server can provide more predictable CPU behavior for a busy or CPU-sensitive game, while a VPS can cost less for a modest community. Verify the exact plan, location, traffic allowance, backup options and gaming or DDoS protections at purchase because those terms are volatile.
Managed game-server hosts
Managed hosts trade infrastructure control for a game-specific panel, one-click deployment and provider support. A January 2026 market review lists Shockbyte, ScalaCube and PingPerfect among providers with differing hardware ceilings, bandwidth policies, DDoS offerings, trial terms, locations and supported-game catalogs. Check the current terms for the exact game and region, confirm whether mods and custom server binaries are allowed, and determine how world backups can be downloaded before signing up.

Compare alternatives on the same worksheet
A low advertised monthly price is not a fair comparison unless the included resources and your own labor are equivalent. Score each candidate against these dimensions:
| Dimension | What to record | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Concurrency | Average, peak and burst duration | Determines machine count and whether autoscaling is useful |
| CPU | Single-thread speed, sustained performance and steal time | Many game loops slow down on one saturated core even when total CPU looks low |
| Memory and storage | RAM headroom, disk type, capacity and snapshot retention | Mods, world growth and backups can exhaust a minimal plan |
| Latency | Player-to-region round-trip time and routing consistency | Distance and poor peering can make a cheap region unplayable |
| Bandwidth | Included transfer, egress rates and port speed | Updates, downloads and busy servers can create surprise charges |
| DDoS protection | What is included, capacity, filtering and response process | Protection varies widely and may be an add-on |
| Reliability | Backups, restore process, maintenance policy and replacement time | A low price is meaningless if a failed disk destroys the world |
| Operations | Panel, API, monitoring, support and your administration hours | Managed convenience has value even when compute is more expensive |
| Compatibility | Operating system, mods, plugins, custom binaries and console access | A host that cannot run your build is not a bargain |
Fit the server to the game
Minecraft
Minecraft worlds are persistent, save frequently and often depend on plugins or mods. Prioritize strong single-thread performance, enough memory for the chosen world and mod set, reliable storage, scheduled off-site backups and a host that permits the required Java version and launch arguments. Keep a tested copy of the world before changing a mod loader or major game version.
Rust
Rust servers can experience sharp CPU and memory demand during world activity and player surges. Select a region close to the community, monitor tick or frame performance, plan for regular world saves and confirm that the provider’s DDoS controls match your exposure. Test wipe-day load separately from a quiet weekday.
Valheim
Valheim is commonly run as a persistent cooperative world, so dependable storage, backups and simple restart procedures matter more than sophisticated session placement for a small group. Verify mod compatibility and provide a recovery path for world and character files before upgrading.
Security and reliability checklist
- Allow only documented game ports and restrict SSH or RDP to trusted addresses.
- Use separate administrator credentials, key-based SSH where possible, and least-privilege service accounts.
- Patch the operating system and server software on a schedule, with a staging copy for risky updates.
- Automate backups, retain multiple generations and perform periodic restore tests.
- Set a cloud budget and billing alerts; investigate idle instances, unexpected transfer and excessive snapshots.
- Define what happens during a crash, host failure, Spot interruption or provider maintenance window.
- Keep contact and escalation details for the provider, and document who can restart or roll back the server.
Troubleshoot the failures players notice first
No one can connect
Confirm that the process is running and listening on the expected address and port. Check the EC2 security group, the operating-system firewall and any provider firewall, then test from an external network. A server bound only to localhost, an incorrect UDP rule or a region change without an updated address are common causes.

Players connect but experience lag
Compare player latency with per-core CPU, memory pressure, disk latency and server tick metrics. If one core is saturated, move to a faster CPU class rather than simply adding vCPUs. If latency is high for one geography, test a closer region. On a VPS, sustained steal time can indicate contention; collect measurements before changing providers.
The bill is higher than expected
Check instance hours, forgotten test machines, snapshots, data transfer, public addressing and monitoring charges. Recalculate with actual average concurrency and separate peak events from always-on capacity. Set automatic shutdown for nonproduction systems and review whether Spot interruptions are acceptable before moving production capacity.
A Spot interruption or host failure loses a session
Spot capacity is interruptible. Keep active sessions on a capacity mix that can drain safely, checkpoint state where the game supports it, and replace interrupted hosts automatically. For persistent worlds, rely on durable storage and recent backups rather than assuming a terminated instance can be recovered.
An update breaks the world
Stop the server, back up the complete data directory, record the previous build and mod versions, and test the update on a clone. Roll back by restoring the known-good files if the new build changes saves or dependencies.
A practical decision rule
- Choose direct EC2 for one or a few servers when you have Linux or Windows administration skills and need full control.
- Choose GameLift managed fleets for session-based multiplayer where placement, fleet health and autoscaling justify a managed service.
- Choose GameLift Anywhere when you already control the compute and want GameLift session accounting and integration.
- Choose a VPS when the server is modest and persistent, demand is predictable, and a fixed monthly bill matters more than hyperscale orchestration.
- Choose a managed game host when one-click installation, support and included DDoS handling are worth the provider markup and reduced infrastructure control.
Price the shortlisted options with the same concurrency, region, uptime, storage, backup and bandwidth assumptions. Revisit the calculation after a real month of metrics; the cheapest architecture on paper is not necessarily the cheapest one to operate reliably.
