The most straightforward way to host a FiveM server in 2026 is Cfx.re’s guided FXServer setup with txAdmin. You download the recommended server artifacts, launch FXServer, link a free Cfx account, create a server registration key in the Cfx Portal, deploy the FiveM Basic Server recipe, and select Save and Run Server. Cfx also documents a manual Windows or Linux installation and lists managed game-server hosting as an alternative.
This guide explains each route, the files and credentials you need, the example network settings in Cfx’s documentation, and the maintenance decisions that determine whether your server remains joinable.

There are three practical ways to put a FiveM server online: use the guided txAdmin flow, install FXServer manually on Windows or Linux, or rent a managed game-server instance. Cfx.re documents all three as valid approaches in its server setup overview.

If you have never operated a FiveM server, start with txAdmin. Move to a vanilla installation when you need a file-driven deployment, custom launch process, or operating-system-level control. Choose managed hosting only after checking the provider’s current limits, access model, backup policy, and support terms; the official documentation does not establish universal prices or performance rankings.

What you need before installing
- A computer or hosted instance on which you can run FXServer continuously.
- A free Cfx account. The guided flow links this account during onboarding.
- A server registration key created in the Cfx Portal. Cfx requires this key for the server configuration.
- The current recommended server artifacts downloaded from Cfx.re.
- An archive utility to extract the downloaded package. Cfx’s prerequisites page mentions 7-Zip as one option and notes that alternatives are available: Cfx.re prerequisites.
- For a GTAV Enhanced server, the Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable is a conditional prerequisite listed by Cfx. It is not a blanket requirement for every standard setup.
Keep the artifacts and configuration in a location where the account running FXServer has read and write access. Before inviting players, decide whether the machine is for a private local test, a LAN server, or a publicly reachable service. The documented first-run test is local; passing it does not by itself prove that players on the public internet can connect.
Set up the server with txAdmin
txAdmin is the guided route because it opens a web panel while FXServer is starting and uses a recipe to deploy a working server. Cfx’s step-by-step procedure is documented at Setting up a FiveM Server.
1. Download and unpack the recommended artifacts
- Open Cfx.re’s setup guide and download the recommended server artifacts for your platform.
- Extract the archive with an archive utility. Do not run the executable from inside the compressed file; extract the complete directory first.
- Keep the extracted location available for later updates. The server executable and its data directory must remain together in the structure expected by the setup guide.
2. Start FXServer and open txAdmin
- Launch FXServer from the extracted directory.
- The browser should open txAdmin automatically. If it does not, open
http://localhost:40120on the same machine. Cfx documents port40120as txAdmin’s default HTTP port in its txAdmin documentation. - Enter the console PIN displayed by the server process. This confirms that the browser session is authorized to continue onboarding.
3. Link your account and create administrator access
- Use the onboarding link to connect your Cfx account.
- Create the txAdmin administrator password when prompted.
- Accept the terms shown in the current onboarding flow. Keep the password separate from your Cfx account password and store both in a password manager.
4. Deploy the FiveM Basic Server recipe
- In the recipe selector, choose FiveM Basic Server.
- Open the Cfx Portal in the step requested by txAdmin and generate a server registration key. Cfx describes this as a free license key registration step.
- Paste the key into txAdmin exactly as issued. Do not publish it in screenshots, repositories, or public configuration files.
- Start the recipe deployment and wait for txAdmin to finish creating the server data and configuration.
- Select Save and Run Server. The panel should report the server process as running and expose its console and management controls.
5. Perform the first connection test
Use the FiveM client on the same local network and connect as described in Cfx’s setup guide. This is a useful first check for a valid installation, recipe deployment, and server key. It is only a local verification. If the server must be reachable from outside your network, you still need to apply the firewall, router, and hosting-network rules appropriate to the endpoints configured on your machine. The official local test does not establish public-internet reachability.
Install FXServer manually on Windows or Linux
The vanilla route separates the server binaries from the server-data directory and asks you to create the configuration file yourself. Follow Cfx’s current instructions at Setting Up a Vanilla FXServer; recommended artifact URLs and launch details can change.
Windows workflow
- Download a current recommended Windows server build from Cfx.re.
- Extract the build to a dedicated directory.
- Download or create the matching
server-datadirectory separately, as shown in Cfx’s vanilla guide. - Create
server.cfgin the server-data location. - Add the server registration key to the configuration, for example
sv_licenseKey YOUR_SERVER_KEY. Replace the text after the directive with the key generated in the Cfx Portal; do not treat the displayed token as a real key. - Launch FXServer with the path to that configuration. The exact command and artifact layout should come from the current Windows instructions because Cfx can revise recommended builds.
Linux workflow
- Download the current Linux recommended build and extract it.
- Place the separate
server-datadirectory where the account running the service can read and write it. - Create
server.cfg, add the server key, and include the endpoint and resource directives required by your deployment. - Start FXServer using the Linux command in Cfx’s vanilla guide, then inspect the console for configuration or permission errors.
Cfx calls Linux FXServer a courtesy port and flags compatibility and diagnostic-tool limitations. That does not make Linux unusable, but it means a new operator should expect more platform-specific troubleshooting than with the documented Windows path. Choose Linux when you already have the operational skills to inspect processes, permissions, logs, and service startup behavior.

Understand the vanilla configuration example
Cfx’s sample server.cfg demonstrates the shape of a basic configuration. It binds both TCP and UDP endpoints to port 30120, starts the standard resources required by the template, enables OneSync, and sets sv_maxclients 48. Those are example values from the documentation, not a universal capacity guarantee for every machine, network, or hosting plan.

sv_maxclients 48Use the complete resource-startup lines from the current vanilla guide rather than copying an outdated list from a forum post. Resource startup order, artifact changes, and template contents can evolve. If you change the port, apply the same value consistently to the configuration and to the firewall or hosting controls that govern inbound traffic.
The value 48 means only that the sample requests a 48-slot limit. It is not a measured recommendation and does not prove that your CPU, memory, bandwidth, or scripts can sustain 48 concurrent players. Treat the hosting provider’s stated limits and your own monitoring as the basis for capacity decisions.
Use txAdmin after the first launch
txAdmin is not only an installer. Cfx describes it as a web management panel included in FXServer builds above artifact 2524, with tools for:
- Starting, stopping, and restarting the server.
- Starting, stopping, and restarting individual resources.
- Managing access control and administrator permissions.
- Monitoring server activity and viewing logs.
- Managing players.
- Scheduling automatic restarts.
Because artifact guidance changes, verify the current Cfx documentation instead of treating the “above artifact 2524” statement as a claim about the latest release. Restrict txAdmin access to trusted administrators, use a strong unique password, and avoid exposing its web interface more broadly than your operating environment requires.

Add scripts and other resources safely
A FiveM server loads resources from its resources/ directory. Cfx describes a resource as a package that can contain scripts, streaming assets, and related files. A resource normally needs an fxmanifest.lua manifest so the server can parse it correctly; the concepts are explained in Introduction to Resources.
- Obtain a resource from a source you trust and inspect its documentation and file structure.
- Place the resource folder under
resources/without adding an extra nested directory that hides the manifest. - Follow the resource’s installation instructions for dependencies and configuration.
- Add the appropriate startup directive to
server.cfgor use txAdmin’s resource controls when the template supports that workflow. - Restart or start the resource, then watch the console and txAdmin logs for missing dependencies, syntax errors, or permission failures.
Do not assume that installing more resources automatically improves a server. Every script can consume CPU time, memory, database connections, or network capacity, and poorly maintained resources can prevent startup. Keep a known-good backup of server.cfg and the resource directory before making changes.
Keep artifacts supported and the server maintainable
Cfx warns that unsupported artifacts older than three months will not be joinable from the server browser. The exact support window depends on artifact releases, so check the current end-of-support and end-of-life guidance before planning an upgrade.
- Check the recommended artifact version before each planned update.
- Back up
server.cfg, resource configuration, databases, and any custom files before replacing binaries. - Test the updated build with a private connection before opening it to your normal player community.
- Read the console after startup and confirm that every required resource loads.
- Record the artifact version and date so you can identify which change introduced a regression.
- Schedule maintenance through txAdmin when possible, and notify players before a restart.
Updating is part of hosting, not an optional cosmetic task: an old artifact can eventually disappear from the server browser even if the process still starts on your machine.
Troubleshoot the common setup failures
The browser did not open txAdmin
Confirm that FXServer is still running and that you opened http://localhost:40120 on the same machine. A local browser cannot reach a txAdmin instance that never started, was stopped by an error, or is listening on a different address or port. Read the FXServer console before changing files.

The server key is rejected
Generate the key in the Cfx Portal as part of the current setup flow, copy it without extra spaces, and place it in the configuration field or directive requested by txAdmin. Do not substitute a Cfx account password for the server registration key.
The server starts but is not visible publicly
First repeat the documented local connection test. If that succeeds, inspect the network path outside the FiveM process: the configured TCP and UDP endpoints, host firewall, router or NAT policy, and any restrictions imposed by a managed host. The local test proves that the server process works; it does not prove that an internet client can route to it.
A resource fails during startup
Check that the resource folder contains its fxmanifest.lua, that the startup name matches the folder name, and that dependencies are present. Use the txAdmin console and logs to identify the first error rather than repeatedly restarting after a cascade of secondary messages.
Linux behaves differently from Windows
Review file permissions, executable status, path capitalization, and service-user access. Cfx’s Linux courtesy-port warning means compatibility and diagnostic tooling may differ, so reproduce the issue with a minimal resource set before concluding that the artifact itself is defective.

Cfx lists game-server hosting providers as an available setup route. Managed hosting can be sensible when you do not want to administer an operating system, keep a process running, maintain firewall rules, or perform artifact updates yourself. The trade-off is less direct control over the machine and dependence on the provider’s panel, limits, backup process, and support response.

Do not select a host solely because it advertises a large slot number. Cfx’s own 48-slot sample is configuration syntax, not a performance test, and actual capacity depends on your scripts, resources, hardware, and network.
A practical launch checklist
- Recommended artifacts downloaded and extracted.
- Cfx account linked in txAdmin.
- Server registration key generated in the Cfx Portal and entered privately.
- FiveM Basic Server recipe deployed, or vanilla
server.cfgcreated. - FXServer reaches a running state without fatal console errors.
- Local FiveM connection succeeds.
- Configured endpoint port is consistent across the server configuration and your network controls.
- Administrator credentials stored securely.
- Resource folders and manifests verified before enabling custom scripts.
- Backup and update procedure documented before inviting players.
- Artifact age monitored so the server remains within Cfx’s supported browser window.
What to verify before publishing your server address
Run the server for a period with only the basic template, observe CPU and memory behavior, and then add custom resources one at a time. Confirm that scheduled restarts, logs, administrator access, and backups work before treating the server as production-ready. If you move from a local machine to managed hosting, repeat the local-style functional test in the new environment and then verify external connectivity through that host’s documented network controls.
The supported, least-surprising path in 2026 remains: current artifacts, txAdmin’s FiveM Basic Server recipe, a valid Cfx server key, a successful local connection, and a maintenance routine that keeps the artifact inside Cfx’s support window. Vanilla Windows or Linux gives you more direct control, while managed hosting reduces machine administration at the cost of provider-specific limits and policies.
