To host a Farm and Far server, download the separate Farm-and-Far-v1.3.1-Server-Pack.zip from the pack’s CurseForge page, use a host with Java 17 and enough memory, then start the included Forge server files and accept Minecraft’s EULA. The pack is listed for Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge. Match the server-pack version to the version every player installs, and make a backup before changing the server or its world.
What you need before you start
Farm and Far is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1. Its CurseForge listing describes it as multiplayer-friendly for one to six players. The creator’s note on Modpack Index lists 129 mods. The available server download is a separate archive, not a client installation that you need to strip down yourself.
Gather these essentials before setting up:
- The matching server pack: CurseForge lists
Farm-and-Far-v1.3.1-Server-Pack.zip, about 403 MB, marked Minecraft 1.20.1 / Forge. The listed file is dated July 28, 2026, as retrieved October 14, 2026. The listing can change, so check the current file name and version when downloading. - Java 17: Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge should be run with Java 17. You can keep other Java versions installed; configure the server to use the Java 17 executable rather than uninstalling them.
- Memory: Plan for at least 8 GB allocated to the server’s Java process. For a busier server, a third-party hosting guide recommends 12 GB or more. This is RAM guidance, not a guarantee of performance; CPU speed, world generation, player activity, and the host’s available resources also matter.
- Storage and access: Keep the server in its own directory, with enough free disk space for the extracted pack, world, logs, and backups. You need permission to run files and allow the Minecraft server’s traffic through the host’s firewall or network settings.
These steps cover a server you control, such as a computer or rented host. The exact control panel and network setup depend on the host. Hosting prices and provider comparisons are not established here.
Download the correct Farm and Far server pack
- Open Farm and Far’s CurseForge project page and select Files.
- Find the server pack in Additional Files for the release your players will use. The listed example is
Farm-and-Far-v1.3.1-Server-Pack.zip, marked 1.20.1 / Forge. - Confirm that the server pack and the client pack are for the same Farm and Far release and Minecraft version. Ask each player to install that matching client release. A client pack is not a substitute for the separate server pack.
- Download the archive and extract it into a new, dedicated folder. Avoid extracting over an existing world or another modpack’s server directory.
Server-pack contents and filenames can vary by release. Use the included files and any README or instructions supplied with the archive as the authority for that release. The available release information identifies the server archive, but does not establish a Farm and Far-specific README or a guaranteed launch filename.

Install and select Java 17
Check which Java your shell or command prompt currently finds before starting the server. Open a terminal on Linux or macOS, or Command Prompt or PowerShell on Windows, and run:
java -versionLook for a version beginning with 17. If it reports a different major version, that does not necessarily mean Java 17 is absent; it may mean another version is first in the system path. Install or locate a Java 17 runtime, then make the server use that Java executable.

Do not remove a newer Java installation simply to make this server run. Minecraft 1.20.1 is associated with Java 17; support for Java 21 with this particular pack has not been verified. A Forge forum report describes an Unsupported class file major version 66 error with JDK 22 that was resolved by switching to Java 17, so a newer JDK is not a safe default for this setup.
Windows
Open the extracted server folder and look for its Windows launch script, commonly named run.bat in typical Forge output. If the pack supplies a script, use that rather than substituting a client launcher or an unrelated server command. If the script is not configured to use the Java 17 installation, adjust its Java path or set JAVA_HOME for the environment from which you launch it. Do not rename or delete pack files to work around a Java-path problem.

Linux
In the server directory, look for the Linux launch script, commonly run.sh in typical Forge output. If the file is present but will not run, check that it has execute permission. You can grant it from that directory with:
chmod +x run.shThen run the script with ./run.sh. If Java 17 is not the default, configure the script or its environment to call the Java 17 binary. The included server-pack instructions, if present, take precedence over these typical Forge conventions.
Set memory for the server
For this pack, allocate at least 8 GB of RAM to the Java server process. Game Host Bros’ published guidance recommends 12 GB or more for busier servers. A separate CurseForge client guideline says 6 GB on a 16 GB machine and 8 GB on systems with 24–32 GB; that is client guidance, not a server requirement, so use the server-specific 8 GB minimum recommendation when sizing the server.
On a dedicated server, set the Java initial heap (Xms) equal to its maximum heap (Xmx). For an 8 GB allocation, the intended values are -Xms8G and -Xmx8G. Apply them in the server’s launch configuration if it exposes JVM arguments; do not blindly replace the entire Forge command, since it may include arguments needed to load the server correctly.

Leave RAM for the operating system and other services. The Java heap is not the same as the machine’s total RAM: a machine with exactly 8 GB total cannot safely dedicate all 8 GB to Java. A third-party guide suggests assigning 70–75% of VPS RAM to the JVM, but that is low-confidence general advice rather than a tested Farm and Far formula. Use the host’s available memory and monitor actual performance rather than treating that percentage as a guarantee.
Start the server and accept the EULA
- Start the included Forge launch script from the extracted server-pack folder, using the Java 17 configuration and memory allocation you intend to keep.
- On a first run, let the server create its initial files. It may stop after creating an EULA file instead of opening the server fully; that is expected in the standard first-start flow.
- Open
eula.txtin the server folder. Read Minecraft’s EULA. If you agree to it, changeeula=falsetoeula=trueand save the file. Do not set it to true unless you agree to the terms. - Run the same launch script again and allow the initial world generation to finish. First startup can take longer than a later restart while Forge initializes and the world is created.
- Keep the server process running while players connect. Use the host’s normal shutdown procedure or the server console’s
stopcommand for a clean stop; closing a terminal or killing the process can interrupt writes.
Exact console messages and file layouts depend on the server-pack release. If its included instructions specify a different first-run sequence, follow those instructions rather than assuming every Forge package is identical.

Configure the world and server settings
The server’s server.properties file controls standard Minecraft server options. Stop the server before editing it, then restart to apply changes. For a new server, let the first launch create the file before editing it. If you already have a world, back it up before changing settings that can affect exploration or performance.
View distance
If players experience lag or the host is under heavy load, try reducing view-distance in server.properties. Lowering it means players see fewer chunks around them, which can reduce the work the server performs. Change it in small steps and ask players to test; an overly low distance can make exploration feel constrained. No Farm and Far-specific optimal value has been established.

Tick watchdog behavior
A third-party guide suggests setting max-tick-time=-1 to prevent watchdog shutdowns during chunk-generation spikes. Treat that as a low-confidence troubleshooting option, not a routine performance fix: disabling the watchdog can also leave a stalled server running rather than terminating it. First determine whether the server is genuinely overloaded or stuck, and preserve logs before changing watchdog behavior.
Keep configuration changes reversible
- Change one setting at a time, then observe the result.
- Record the original value so you can restore it.
- Do not add, remove, or update mods independently on the server while clients are using a different pack version.
- After a configuration or mod change, restart the server cleanly and verify that players can join before making further changes.
Let players connect
Players need the matching Farm and Far client release for Minecraft 1.20.1 / Forge. Share the server address through a trusted channel and tell players which pack release to install. If the server runs on a home network, the router and host firewall may need to permit incoming Minecraft traffic; on a rented host, use its network or firewall settings. The exact port, address, and forwarding steps depend on the server configuration and host, so do not assume a private local address will work for players outside your network.
Test from a second device or network if possible. A connection that works from the server machine itself does not prove that remote players can reach it. If players cannot connect, check that the server is still running, that they have the correct pack version, and that the host’s network rules allow the configured server traffic.

Make regular backups, and always make one before changing the modpack, Forge files, configuration, or world. Stop the server first so files are not being actively written, then copy the world directory and the relevant server configuration to a separate location. Keep at least one backup outside the server folder; a copy beside the live world will not help if the whole host or directory is lost.

For a restore, stop the server, preserve a copy of the current files for diagnosis, and restore the backup’s world and matching configuration. Start the server and check that the world loads before inviting players back. A backup is only useful if it is complete and can be recovered, so periodically verify that the copy exists and contains the expected world data.
Troubleshoot common startup and connection problems
The server reports an unsupported class-file version
Check the Java version actually used by the launch script, not just the version installed on the machine. For Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge, point the script or its environment to Java 17. A newer JDK can be installed alongside it; the server must invoke the compatible runtime.

Verify that you extracted the server pack fully, are running the script from the server directory, and are using the operating system’s included script. On Linux, check execute permission for run.sh. Review the terminal output and the newest server log for the first error instead of repeatedly relaunching without changing anything.
The server stops after its first launch
Check whether it created eula.txt. If so, review the terms and set eula=true only if you agree, then launch again. If it stopped for another error, use the first relevant error in the console or log to diagnose it; do not assume every first-run stop is an EULA issue.
Players cannot join
Confirm the server has completed startup and remains running, then confirm players are on the exact matching Farm and Far release. If version and running state are correct, check the host firewall, router forwarding, or rented-host network rules and ensure players are using the reachable server address rather than a local-only address.
The world is laggy or the server crashes under load
Check memory allocation and the host’s total available RAM first. The server recommendation is at least 8 GB for Java, with 12 GB or more suggested for busier servers. Also consider CPU limits and world generation: a third-party guide notes that Minecraft servers can be single-thread CPU bound, so additional RAM alone will not resolve every slowdown. Lowering view distance may help; back up before adjusting settings that affect operation, and keep watchdog changes such as max-tick-time=-1 as a cautious, low-confidence measure rather than a default.

- Download the Farm and Far server pack, not only the client pack.
- Match the server release, Minecraft 1.20.1, and Forge version to every player’s client.
- Run the included Forge launch script with Java 17.
- Allocate at least 8 GB to Java, use equal
XmsandXmx, and leave system memory for the host. - Accept the EULA only if you agree, then launch again to generate the world.
- Test player access and host network rules.
