You cannot create a new native Facebook Watch Party today. Facebook removed the original Watch Party feature on April 16, 2021. As a result, current Facebook does not show a Watch Party or Start Watch Party option in Groups, Pages, profiles, or the post composer.
You can still watch some Facebook-hosted videos together through Messenger’s separate Watch Together feature, or create a Facebook Live, video post, Group discussion, or Event for a larger audience. These alternatives do not all provide synchronized playback, so choosing the right method matters.
What happened to Facebook Watch Party?
Facebook launched Watch Party globally for Groups on July 25, 2018. It let people watch selected live or recorded Facebook videos in sync while commenting and chatting around the video.
That feature was retired on April 16, 2021. Old instructions may still tell you to follow a path such as:

- Open a Facebook Group.
- Click Write something or Create post.
- Select Watch Party.
- Choose videos and click Start Watch Party.
That menu no longer represents Facebook’s current interface. Being a Group admin does not restore it, and there is no account type or hidden setting that enables a new native Facebook Watch Party.
Use Messenger Watch Together for a small synchronized viewing session
Messenger’s Watch Together is the closest current replacement. It runs inside an active Messenger video call or Messenger Room. It is not the old Facebook Group Watch Party moved to Messenger.
The feature is limited to videos available in Facebook Watch. It cannot synchronize Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Max, YouTube, TikTok, or an arbitrary website inside Messenger’s shared player.

Start Watch Together in a Messenger video call
- Open the Messenger mobile app.
- Start a video call with the people you want to invite.
- Once the call is active, tap the screen to show the call controls.
- Open the call menu and select Watch Together.
- Choose a video from Facebook Watch.
- Use the call controls to stop watching or return to the video call.
The exact icon used to open the call menu can vary between Android and iPhone versions. The important point is that Watch Together appears inside an active video call; it is not normally available from an ordinary text conversation.

Use a Messenger Room for more viewers
A standard Messenger video call supports up to eight people. A Messenger Room can support up to 50 participants. To use the larger limit, create or join the Room first, then start a video call and open Watch Together from the call menu.
Participant limits and feature availability can vary with Facebook’s current product rules, account, device, and region. If Watch Together does not appear, update Messenger and make sure the session is a video call rather than a voice-only call.
Why Watch Together may be missing or fail to play

Share a video in a Facebook Group, Page, profile, or Event
If synchronized playback is not essential, a normal Facebook post provides a shared place for people to watch and discuss a video. It does not make the video play at the same time for everyone; each viewer must press Play.

- Open the post composer.
- Select Photo/video, or paste a link to a Facebook-hosted video.
- Add instructions such as the viewing time and a discussion prompt.
- Choose the audience or post privacy setting.
- Publish the post.
For a coordinated discussion, include a specific start time, ask viewers to comment when they reach a particular point, and keep the post open as the discussion thread. This creates a useful group viewing conversation, but it is not synchronized playback.

Use Facebook Live for a larger audience
Facebook Live is suitable when you are broadcasting your own presentation, event, commentary, or other content for viewers to watch through a live stream. It is not a replacement for rebroadcasting a copyrighted film or television episode.
The general current path is:
- Go to the destination where you want to stream: a profile, Page, Group, or Event.
- Open the post composer.
- Select Live video.
- Configure the title, description, audience, camera, microphone, and any available scheduling or stream settings.
- Start the broadcast when ready.
The controls shown after selecting Live video depend on your destination, Page role, device, region, and Facebook’s interface rollout. Page managers may find additional scheduling and live controls in Meta Business Suite or the Page’s Professional dashboard.
For a scheduled viewing event, you can also use a scheduled video post, a Facebook Event, a Group announcement, or—where available—a video Premiere. These options help gather viewers at one time, but availability and behavior vary. Confirm the exact options shown on your account before announcing the event.

Do not assume that a private Group or small audience makes it legal to rebroadcast a movie, television episode, sports match, music recording, or other copyrighted material. If you do not have the necessary rights, Facebook may mute the audio, block the stream, reduce its distribution, or remove the content.

Safer options include:
- Use Messenger Watch Together with a video that is legitimately available on Facebook Watch.
- Share an official video link rather than uploading or rebroadcasting a copy.
- Stream content you created or have explicit permission to broadcast.
- Use a licensed watch-party service when the provider supports synchronized playback.
Which method should you use?

Common claims that are no longer correct
- “Only Group admins can host a Watch Party.” No. Admin status does not restore the retired feature.
- “Facebook moved Watch Party to Messenger.” No. Messenger Watch Together is a separate feature with different limits and content restrictions.
- “Posting a video in a Group creates synchronized playback.” No. A normal post creates a shared discussion location only.
- “You can use Watch Together with any streaming site.” No. The shared player is intended for supported videos available through Facebook Watch.
FAQ
Can I host a Facebook Watch Party in 2025?
No. Facebook’s original native Watch Party feature was removed on April 16, 2021. There is currently no Watch Party creation control for Groups, Pages, profiles, or the post composer.
Is Messenger Watch Together the same as Facebook Watch Party?
No. Watch Together runs inside Messenger video calls or Rooms and has different limits. It is mainly for watching supported Facebook Watch videos together, not for hosting a Group-wide Facebook event.
How many people can join Messenger Watch Together?
A standard Messenger video call supports up to eight people. A Messenger Room can support up to 50 participants, subject to Facebook’s current availability and account rules.

The Bottom Line
There is no current way to host the original Facebook Watch Party. For synchronized viewing, start a Messenger video call or Room and choose Watch Together for a supported Facebook Watch video. For a larger Facebook audience, use a normal video post, Event, scheduled post, Premiere where available, or Facebook Live—while remembering that these options do not automatically synchronize playback and that copyrighted broadcasts require permission.
