To host a DeceasedCraft server, run the pack’s official Forge server files on a computer you control or install the pack through a managed Minecraft host. The reliable path is to match the server pack to your Minecraft version, use Java 17, allocate enough memory, complete the first launch, and then test networking before inviting players.
This guide covers the current 1.20.1 release line as well as the older 1.18.2 files, self-hosting on Windows or Linux, one-click hosting panels, command-block requirements, upgrades, backups, and the failures most likely to stop a server from starting.

What “DeceasedCraft server hosting” means
DeceasedCraft is a Forge modpack for Minecraft Java Edition. A server must run the same modpack release as every connecting player; a vanilla server, a Fabric server, or a different DeceasedCraft version will not be compatible.
You have two practical choices:
- Self-host: download the server files, run them on your own Windows or Linux machine, and handle Java, memory, firewall rules, backups, and updates.
- Use a managed host: rent a Minecraft server and install DeceasedCraft from the provider’s modpack panel. The provider supplies the always-on machine and control panel, while you still manage the world and modpack settings.
The official DeceasedCraft project and its release files should be your starting point. Do not assume that every similarly named “server pack” is the same upload.

Choose the correct DeceasedCraft release and server pack
The main CurseForge file list currently marks 5.10.17 as the latest release for Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge, with 5.10.16 immediately before it. The same list also contains files for Minecraft 1.18.2. Select the Minecraft version your group will actually play before downloading anything.
| Pack line | Loader | What to check | Use today |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5.10.17 | Forge | Listed as the latest main-project file for Minecraft 1.20.1 | Preferred starting point for a new 1.20.1 server |
| 5.10.16 | Forge | Previous 1.20.1 release in the main file list | Use only when your client group is deliberately staying on this release |
| 1.18.2 files | Forge | Older Minecraft line shown in the project file list | Use for an existing 1.18.2 community or world |

A separate CurseForge project called Deceased – Server Pack is published by ItzRealXD. Its 1.20.1 Forge upload named DeceasedCraft – Urban-5.10.16.zip is dated July 2026. It is not the main DeceasedCraft project. Before extracting a download, confirm the project name, uploader, Minecraft version, Forge version, and release number shown on the download page.
Be cautious with experimental builds
The main project mentions a v5.11 Experimental Build distributed through Patreon. Its availability and stability have not been established here. Treat it as a test option rather than the foundation of a persistent public server, and keep a separate backup if you try it.
Hardware, Java, and memory requirements
The DeceasedCraft getting-started guidance specifies Java 17 and warns that Java 22 will not work. Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime and verify that the server process uses it, especially if several Java versions are installed on the same computer.

| Workload | Server allocation | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 8 GB | Baseline allocation stated for running the pack |
| Recommended | 10 GB or more | More practical for normal play and several loaded areas |
| DH Edition | 12 GB or more | Higher allocation stated for the DH Edition |
MinecraftHub reports the same 8 GB minimum and 10 GB-or-more recommendation. These are allocations to the Java server, not the total physical memory in the computer. Leave additional RAM for the operating system, file cache, Java overhead, and any desktop applications. A machine with exactly 8 GB of physical memory is therefore a poor candidate for an 8 GB server allocation.
An older review written for the 1.18.2 pack suggested at least 6 GB allocated and 16 GB of system RAM. That advice predates the current 1.20.1 release line and should not override the newer 8 GB minimum and 10 GB recommendation.
Check Java before launching
On Windows, open PowerShell or Command Prompt and run java -version. On Linux, run the same command in a terminal. The result should identify Java 17. If it reports Java 22, change the server’s Java executable or install Java 17 and make that version the one used by the launch script.
Do not rely only on the Java version shown by a graphical launcher. The server startup script can point to a different executable than the one on your normal command-line path.

1. Prepare a dedicated server folder
- Create a folder used only for this DeceasedCraft instance. Keep the folder outside your personal Downloads directory so it is easier to back up and less likely to be moved accidentally.
- Give the folder a version-aware name, for example one that identifies Minecraft 1.20.1 and the DeceasedCraft release.
- Install 64-bit Java 17 and confirm it with
java -version. - Make sure the account running the server can read and write the folder. The server must create configuration files, libraries, logs, player data, and the world directory during its first launch.
2. Download and extract the server pack
- Choose the release on the main CurseForge project, then open its Additional Files section.
- Download the server archive for the exact Minecraft and DeceasedCraft versions your players will use.
- Extract every file while preserving the archive’s directory structure. Do not run the server from inside the compressed archive.
- Keep the archive until the server has started successfully and you have made a backup of the clean installation.
The extracted folder normally contains a supplied launch script, Forge files, configuration directories, and instructions. Use the script shipped with the pack rather than inventing a different Forge command. File names can change between pack releases.
3. Perform the first launch
- On Windows, run the supplied Windows launch script from the server folder. On Linux, make the supplied shell script executable and run it from that folder.
- Allow the first launch to finish downloading or creating the files required by Forge. The first run can take substantially longer than later starts.
- If the process stops and creates an EULA file, open that file, read the Minecraft EULA, change the acceptance value only if you agree to it, save the file, and launch again.
- Wait for the console to report that the server is ready before attempting to connect. Closing the window while libraries or world files are being created can leave an incomplete installation.
Run the server from a persistent terminal or service once setup is complete. Closing the terminal normally stops the server; abruptly killing the process risks losing recent world changes.

4. Set the memory allocation
Open the launch script in a text editor and locate its Java memory options. Set the maximum allocation to a value appropriate for your hardware: 8 GB is the stated minimum, while 10 GB or more is the recommended target for the standard pack. The DH Edition calls for 12 GB or more. Do not allocate all physical RAM to Java.
Restart after changing the script and watch the console for memory-related errors. If the operating system begins swapping heavily, lower the allocation or move the server to a machine with more physical memory rather than repeatedly increasing the Java maximum.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Review command-block requirements
DeceasedCraft’s multiblocks and vehicle spawns depend on command blocks being enabled. If those features fail while ordinary blocks and mobs work, command-block permission is one of the first settings to check.
The exact enablement procedure was not established for every release and hosting panel. Check the DeceasedCraft wiki and the server settings exposed by your pack version before changing configuration. After enabling the setting, restart the server and test a feature that requires a command block; do not assume that a running console alone proves the setting is active.
6. Configure local access and remote access
First test from the same computer by connecting to the server address used for local play. This separates pack and Java problems from router problems.
For players on the same home network, use the host computer’s private address. For players outside the home, forward the server’s configured Minecraft port from the router to the host computer and allow that port through the operating system firewall. Minecraft servers commonly use TCP port 25565 by default, but use the port shown in your server configuration if you changed it.

- Give the host computer a stable private address, either with a router DHCP reservation or a correctly configured static address.
- Create a firewall rule limited to the server port rather than disabling the firewall entirely.
- Share your public address only with the people who need it. A dynamic-DNS name can make a changing public address easier to manage, but it does not replace firewall protection.
- If port forwarding is unavailable because of carrier-grade NAT, use a private overlay network such as ZeroTier or Tailscale, or choose a managed host.
7. Test with a clean client
- Install the same Minecraft version, Forge version, and DeceasedCraft release on a test client.
- Connect locally first, then test from another device on the same network.
- Test an external connection only after local access works.
- Walk through the features your group depends on, including multiblocks, vehicles, dimensions, and any commands used by your normal play style.
A successful login is not a complete test. Let the server run long enough to load several areas and inspect the console for repeating errors before opening it to a larger group.
Older Linux shortcut for DeceasedCraft 1.18.2
A community GitHub project named deceased-craft-server provides a Debian installation script. It targets DeceasedCraft 1.18.2 rather than the current 1.20.1 pack, so treat it as an older convenience option, not a universal installer.
The script requires Debian 10 or later and root or sudo access. It installs Java 17 if Java is missing and can optionally configure ZeroTier or Tailscale for remote access. Read the script before executing it, confirm that its pack version matches your players, and keep credentials and sudo access under your control.
For a new 1.20.1 server, manually installing the official server files is safer than assuming that this older script understands the newer pack layout.
How to use a managed DeceasedCraft server host
A managed host avoids home-router configuration and keeps the machine online in the provider’s data center. The exact labels differ, but the workflow is usually: stop the instance, select the modpack installer, choose DeceasedCraft and its version, generate or retain a world as appropriate, then start the server.
| Panel documented | Workflow | Important caution |
|---|---|---|
| Pine Hosting | Stop the server, open the Modpack tab, choose CurseForge, install Deceased Craft, then start it from the console. | Stop the server before changing the installed pack. |
| Apex Hosting | Choose the modpack in Game File, select Change Version, use Generate New World, then choose Restart Now. | Generating a new world can replace the existing world; back up first. |
| WiseHosting | A DeceasedCraft hosting page is listed. | Pricing and plan specifications were not verified. |
Managed-host checklist
- Stop the server before installing or changing a modpack.
- Make a downloadable backup of the world and configuration.
- Confirm the Minecraft version, Forge loader, and DeceasedCraft release in the panel.
- Install the pack from the panel’s CurseForge or modpack catalogue rather than uploading a client-only profile.
- Start the server and read the console until it reports readiness.
- Connect with a client using the exact same release.
- Check command-block settings and test pack-specific features before inviting everyone.
Ask a provider how it handles automated backups, restore points, Java selection, console access, modpack updates, and changing the allocated memory. Prices and resource limits vary by host and were not established for the services listed above.

Troubleshooting a DeceasedCraft server
The server exits immediately with a Java error
Run java -version from the same account that starts the server. If it reports Java 22 or another unsupported runtime, install or select Java 17 and update the launch script or hosting-panel Java setting. Also check that the script is being run from the extracted server folder, not from a shortcut with a different working directory.
The server reports that it cannot allocate memory
Check both the Java maximum and the computer’s total free memory. An 8 GB allocation requires more than 8 GB of physical memory once the operating system and other services are included. Close unnecessary programs, lower the allocation to a value the machine can sustain, or move the server to hardware with more RAM. Repeated garbage-collection pauses and operating-system swapping are signs that the machine is overloaded even when the process has not crashed.
Players receive missing-mod or mismatched-version errors
Compare the client and server Minecraft version, Forge version, and DeceasedCraft release character by character. Remove old client profiles, select the intended profile again, and make sure the server archive came from the same release line. A client installed from a different project with a similar name can contain different mods or configuration files.
Multiblocks or vehicles do not work
Check that command blocks are enabled according to the instructions for your release and host panel, then restart the server. Test with a fresh, permitted player account and inspect the console for command-block or permission errors. Do not treat a successful ordinary login as proof that command-dependent features are configured correctly.
Local players can connect but internet players cannot
Verify the server’s configured port, the host computer’s private address, router forwarding, and the operating-system firewall rule. Test from a genuinely external network, such as a phone hotspot; testing your public address from inside the same network can fail on routers that do not support hairpin NAT. If your internet connection uses carrier-grade NAT, port forwarding may be impossible without an overlay network or a hosted server.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The host panel starts a new world unexpectedly
Stop the server and restore the backup before attempting another version change. In panels that offer Generate New World, treat that action as destructive unless the provider explicitly states that it preserves the existing world. Keep the old world directory or backup outside the active installation until the new version has been tested.
Backups, updates, and routine operation
Back up before every change
Stop the server cleanly, copy the world directory and important configuration files to storage outside the live server folder, and record the DeceasedCraft, Minecraft, and Forge versions. A backup that remains on the same disk does not protect against disk failure, ransomware, or an accidental deletion of the entire machine.
Update in a controlled order
- Tell players which release you plan to use and require them to make or copy their client profiles.
- Stop the server and create a verified backup.
- Install the new server files in a separate directory when possible.
- Copy only the configuration and world data you understand; do not blindly overwrite new default files with old ones.
- Start the updated server, watch the console, and test a copy of the world before making it the live instance.
- Keep the previous server directory until the new release has been stable and a restore has been tested.
Do not jump from the 1.18.2 line to 1.20.1 on your only copy of a long-running world. Treat that as a migration, not a routine patch.
Protect the console and player permissions
- Use a separate operating-system account for the server where practical.
- Give operator privileges only to trusted administrators.
- Do not publish console credentials or remote-access tokens in chat.
- Review logs after restarts and investigate repeated errors instead of masking them with automatic restarts.
Which hosting route should you choose?
| Choose self-hosting when… | Choose a managed host when… |
|---|---|
| You have a machine that can sustain the memory allocation, stable internet, and control of the router. | You need an always-online server without maintaining a home machine. |
| You are comfortable editing launch scripts, firewall rules, and backups. | You prefer a web panel for modpack installation and restarts. |
| You want full control over files, Java, networking, and operating-system services. | You accept provider-specific limits and want support for the underlying server hardware. |
| You can handle recovery when a release or configuration change fails. | You need remote access for a group but cannot expose or maintain a home network. |
For either route, version discipline matters more than the installation button: every player must use the same Minecraft, Forge, and DeceasedCraft versions, and every change should be preceded by a recoverable backup.
