The most flexible way to host DayZ in 2026 is to run the dedicated PC server yourself on Windows or Linux. Install the server with SteamCMD, create a configuration file, name that file with -config when launching, open the game and query ports through your firewall and router, then manage updates, mods, backups, and shutdowns as an administrator. A managed PC host removes much of the machine maintenance, while console hosting follows a separate provider arrangement.
Bohemia Interactive’s published figures are a baseline rather than a performance guarantee: dual-core 2.4 GHz Intel or 2.5 GHz AMD Athlon processor, 6 GB RAM, and 2.5 GB storage, with an SSD recommended for installation and logs. Player count, map, mods, and persistence activity can require more capacity, so treat those numbers as a starting point, not a sizing promise.
Choose the hosting model before installing anything
Your platform determines nearly every later decision. A self-hosted PC server gives you direct access to files, logs, launch parameters, and mod directories, but you are responsible for the operating system, network exposure, updates, and recovery. A managed PC server supplies the machine and usually a control panel; you still own the in-game rules, configuration, moderation, and data. Console hosting is not the same installation process as PC hosting.

Do not choose a host solely by advertised RAM or a low monthly price. A server that looks adequate for an unmodded test can behave very differently with a large Workshop collection, frequent persistence writes, or a full player list.

Reserve free disk space before installing mods. Persistence files and logs grow over time, and a backup made on the same full disk is not a recovery plan. A home server also needs to remain powered on whenever players expect to connect.
Network prerequisites
- Use a connection with dependable upstream bandwidth and a stable public route. The required bandwidth depends on population, voice use, update traffic, and other activity on the connection.
- Confirm that your router permits inbound forwarding and that your internet provider does not place you behind carrier-grade NAT. If you cannot receive an inbound connection, a correct server configuration alone will not make the server reachable.
- Give the server machine a stable local address, either through a reserved DHCP lease or a fixed address, so forwarding rules do not silently point at another device.
- Plan a firewall rule for the game port and the query port you configure. Exact protocol and forwarding details depend on your operating system and router.
- Use an administrator account with a strong password and restrict remote administration to the networks and tools you actually need.
Install the dedicated PC server with SteamCMD
1. Prepare a separate service account on Linux
Bohemia’s Linux instructions explicitly warn against running the server as root. Create a normal account for the game service, give it ownership of the server directories, and use elevated privileges only for operating-system tasks such as installing packages or creating a service. This limits the consequences if the exposed game process is compromised.
Create a simple directory layout before downloading files. For example, keep SteamCMD in ~/servers/steamcmd/, the game installation in ~/servers/dayz-server/, and profiles and backups in locations that you can protect separately. The names are examples; consistency matters more than the exact path.
2. Install SteamCMD and download the stable branch
SteamCMD is the documented installation path for the Linux dedicated server. Bohemia’s stable app ID is 223350. Run the command as the service account, replacing the login and paths with your own values:
~/servers/steamcmd/steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir ~/servers/dayz-server/ +login your_login +app_update 223350 +quitThe command logs in, selects the installation directory, downloads or repairs the files, and exits. The same +app_update operation is used later to update the installation. Do not copy a Windows path or shell syntax into Linux unchanged.
3. Use the experimental branch only deliberately
The documented experimental app ID is 1042420. Install it only when you intentionally want the experimental build and have checked that your chosen mods and players can use it. Keep experimental and stable installations separate so an update or test does not overwrite the production server.
4. Treat Windows as a different procedure
Windows is listed among the supported server operating systems, but the Linux command above is not a Windows installation recipe. Use the current Bohemia instructions and SteamCMD build for Windows, choose Windows paths, and arrange the server as a scheduled task or service only after you can start and stop it interactively. The configuration concepts remain the same: a named config file, a game port, a query port, profiles, logs, and a mission.

Create a configuration file and name it at launch
The filename is arbitrary, but the launch option is mandatory
DayZ does not automatically discover every configuration file in the installation directory. Bohemia’s configuration documentation says the file can have any filename, but the server must be told which file to read with the -config launch option. If you omit that selection, mandatory settings are not read and the server will not launch.
A common example is serverDZ.cfg. Store it where the launch command can read it, check that the service account has permission to open it, and ensure the filename is not accidentally saved with a second extension such as .txt.
Settings to review before the first public test
- Identity: server name and description, so friends can recognize the correct entry.
- Access: player password and administrator credentials. Never post administrator credentials in a public community channel.
- Mission: the map and mission template you intend to run.
- Persistence: storage and gameplay options that determine how the world and player state are retained.
- Query: the
steamQueryPortvalue used for server-browser queries. - Profiles and logs: paths that the account can write to and that you can include in diagnostics.
Use the current official configuration reference for the exact key names and syntax. Command-line and configuration details can change between builds, and a nearly correct key is still an incorrect setting.

Game port and query port are different
The game port is supplied as a launch parameter with -port. The query port is set in the configuration file with steamQueryPort and is associated with visibility in the server browser. They are separate settings and must not be assumed to be the same number.
Bohemia examples show game-port values such as 2302, while its Linux launch example uses -port=2301 and a query-port example of 2305. These are examples, not universal forwarding instructions. Select unused ports, keep the values consistent between the server, host firewall, and router, and check the current documentation for the build you are running.
Start with a known launch command
Bohemia’s Linux example is:
./DayZServer -config=serverDZ.cfg -port=2301 -BEpath=battleye -profiles=profiles -dologs -adminlog -netlog -freezecheckThis command names the configuration file, selects the game port, specifies the BattlEye path and profile directory, and enables several logging and diagnostic options. Run it from the directory containing the executable, or use the correct absolute paths for your layout. Confirm the syntax against the current official page before turning it into a permanent service, because launch switches are version-sensitive.
Open the ports and test connectivity
Configure the host firewall and router together
- Write down the game-port and query-port values from your launch command and configuration file.
- Create inbound firewall rules on the server machine for the protocols required by your current DayZ build.
- Forward the same ports from the router to the server machine’s reserved local address. Do not forward them to a changing DHCP address.
- Check that another application is not already listening on either port.
- Start the server and inspect the profile and log output for bind errors, missing files, or permission failures.
- Test locally first, then ask a player on a different network to connect. A successful local connection does not prove that NAT forwarding works from the internet.
A single port-forwarding recipe cannot cover every router, firewall, dual-stack configuration, or carrier-grade-NAT arrangement. If outside players cannot connect, test each layer separately instead of changing several settings at once.
Joining methods and launcher behavior
Players can generally locate a PC server through the in-game browser, add it to Steam favorites, use a direct connection route, or use the DayZ launcher. A December 2022 PC connection guide describes those routes and notes that a launcher may prompt a player to install mods or downloadable content required by a server. Interface labels can change, so use the current launcher wording when giving your community instructions.

If a server appears in a direct connection but not in the browser, check the query-port value, firewall rule, and router forwarding separately. Browser visibility is not a substitute for testing actual game-port reachability.
Add mods without losing control of the installation
Plan the mod set before downloading it
Bohemia’s Linux example includes Steam Workshop downloads and loading mods through server launch arguments. For each mod, record its Workshop identifier, required dependencies, intended load order, client requirement, and current version. A mod that downloads successfully can still be incompatible with the server build or with another mod.
Keep a plain-text inventory of the collection and the launch arguments that loaded it. Separate client-required mods from server-side mods, and follow each creator’s current instructions for installation and updates. Do not assume that a configuration written for one map or build will work unchanged after a major update.
Use a staged update process
- Announce maintenance and stop new joins before changing the installation.
- Make a recoverable copy of persistence data, configuration files, profiles, and the mod inventory.
- Update the DayZ server with the documented SteamCMD command, or apply the managed host’s equivalent process.
- Update mods deliberately rather than allowing an unrelated Workshop change to alter production during peak play.
- Start a test instance or a maintenance window, inspect logs, and verify that the mission loads.
- Have one player test joining, required downloads, spawning, inventory persistence, and any mod-specific features.
- Only then reopen the server to the wider community.
There is no universal compatibility guarantee for every mod combination, and the available documentation does not establish one safe update order for all collections. Keep the last known-good files so you can roll back a change that breaks startup or persistence.

DayZ saves player and world state to server storage. Bohemia recommends using the graceful shutdown method because an abrupt termination can negatively affect player characters and storage saving. Treat a graceful stop as an operational requirement, not a cosmetic preference.

- Allow active players to move to a safe place and log out.
- Use the current server, administration tool, or service procedure for a graceful shutdown.
- Wait for the process to exit and confirm that the final log entries show a normal stop.
- Copy persistence data and configuration files to a separate backup destination when the server is offline.
- Restart only after checking disk space, file ownership, and the intended build and mod versions.
The official material does not prescribe a universal backup interval. Choose a cadence based on how valuable the world is and how often you change settings; a busy community server may need more frequent copies than a weekend test. Keep at least one backup away from the live disk and periodically verify that it can actually be read.

Run the server as an ongoing service
Before opening to friends
- Record the server name, address, game port, query port, mission, password policy, and mod collection.
- Confirm that the server starts after a clean reboot and that its service account can access every required directory.
- Test joining from outside the home network.
- Check that logs rotate or are archived before they consume the disk.
- Tell players how maintenance notices will be delivered and how long restarts normally take.
During normal operation
- Watch CPU, memory, disk space, network use, and log errors rather than relying only on whether the process is still running.
- Apply DayZ and mod updates during a planned window, with a rollback copy available.
- Review administrator access and remove credentials that are no longer needed.
- Keep the operating system and SteamCMD components maintained without changing the game installation blindly.
- Document every configuration change so a later rollback does not depend on memory.
What console hosting means in 2026
Console servers do not use the SteamCMD PC installation described above. DayZ’s official private-console FAQ, published in 2019, identified Nitrado as its hosting partner and described options such as password protection and camera perspective at that time. That FAQ is old enough that it should not be treated as proof of today’s price, regions, plans, settings, or availability.
If you want a private PlayStation or Xbox server, verify the current provider arrangement, supported console, data center region, player capacity, renewal terms, backup controls, and settings before paying. Do not purchase a PC server expecting it to serve console players; platform support is a provider and game-service decision.

How to decide between self-hosting and managed hosting
Self-hosting is appropriate when you can maintain an always-on machine, troubleshoot networking, preserve backups, and accept responsibility for security and updates. A managed host is useful when uptime and administration time matter more than direct operating-system access, but its control panel, mod support, export options, and recovery process must be checked before you commit. Neither choice is automatically best without knowing your platform, region, expected population, mod requirements, budget, and tolerance for maintenance.

For a first deployment, build a small private test server, prove that the config file is read, test both ports from an external network, and confirm persistence across a graceful restart. Only after those checks should you add a large mod collection or invite a public community.
