To host a Counter-Strike 1.6 server, choose between an in-game listen server for a small LAN match, a self-managed Half-Life Dedicated Server (HLDS) for more control, or rented server capacity for a persistent match without keeping your own computer online. For a dedicated Linux server, the documented route uses SteamCMD app 90 with the cstrike mod; home hosts also need to configure the firewall and router for the selected server port.
Choose the hosting method that fits your match
The right setup depends mainly on whether the server needs to stay online after its host leaves, how much control you want over files and settings, and whether you are comfortable managing network access. Steam distinguishes listen servers, Steam dedicated servers, and standalone servers in its Half-Life and Source Game Servers Overview. For CS 1.6, the dedicated-server guides here use HLDS with the cstrike mod.

| In-game listen server | A small LAN match or one-off session | Tied to the player hosting the game | Quickest to start; less server-side control | Local network access; internet access may require further network configuration |
| Self-managed HLDS | A host who wants direct control of server files, maps, and configuration | Can remain online independently of a player’s game session, while the host machine and server process are running | Requires installation, configuration, updates, and ongoing administration | At home, the host must handle firewall rules and router forwarding |
| VPS or managed game-server service | A persistent server without running HLDS on a personal computer | Depends on the service and account remaining active | A managed panel may reduce machine administration; direct file and plugin control varies | The provider supplies network access, but the operator still configures the server and manages its game settings |
For a small LAN session
A listen server is the simplest starting point if one player can host and the group only needs a small local game. Steam describes listen servers as ideal for small LAN games and says they are not intended as public servers. If players need a server that continues after the host exits the game, choose a dedicated server instead.

For a server you administer
Self-managed HLDS gives you access to the server configuration and files, with the trade-off that you provide the computer, keep it running, arrange network access, and maintain the installation. The Linux walkthrough from Nexaplay recommends Debian or Ubuntu, a dedicated non-root service user, 32-bit compatibility libraries, and about 2 GB of free disk space for its setup. Treat those as that guide’s recommendations, not universal minimum requirements for every operating system or server build.

For a server hosted elsewhere
A VPS or managed game-server service can keep the machine separate from your home PC. A prepared panel may make deployment easier than a shell-based installation, but it does not guarantee that every mod, configuration option, or update is available to you. One current guide describes an hourly deployment model; that is an example of how a service may charge, not a general price or recommendation. The cited setup guides do not establish a current market-wide price comparison.
Before choosing a rented service, check its CS 1.6 availability, server location, player capacity, configuration access, backup and support terms, and whether charges recur or depend on usage. Location matters because the server’s distance from players affects their connection path, but the guides do not provide comparative latency measurements.
If you would rather not run HLDS yourself, Godlike.Host offers CS 1.6 server hosting with its own game panel, up to three free backups a day with restore, and 24/7 support by live chat or ticket. It has 10 data-center locations, so you can choose one close to your players.
What you need before installing HLDS
For a self-hosted dedicated server, prepare a machine and decide how players will reach it before you install the server. Steam Support’s setup page says you do not need to register any games to the server account in order to host games. Its instructions list a player limit range of 1–32 and default UDP port 27015; these are setup facts from Steam’s page, not player-population statistics.
- A supported host environment: Select an operating system and follow instructions that match it. The command examples below are for a Linux HLDS setup; they should not be treated as Windows commands.
- A stable server machine: For an always-available server, the machine must remain powered on and the HLDS process must keep running. A home host also needs a sufficiently stable internet connection for the players it expects.
- A player capacity and map: Choose the maximum slots and initial map before launch. Steam’s documented setup range is 1–32 players; the launch example below uses 24 as an example, not a required capacity.
- Server access settings: Decide whether the server is LAN-only or internet-accessible, whether to set a player password, and what strong RCON credential to use.
- Network access: If hosting at home for people outside your LAN, identify the server’s internal address and configure the relevant firewall and router rules for the chosen port.
Install the dedicated server on Linux
The following installation route follows the Linux walkthrough published by Nexaplay. It uses SteamCMD to download HLDS app 90 and select the Counter-Strike mod. Because distributions, libraries, and Valve’s server files can change, check the guide against the operating system and server build you are actually using.
Rank #2
- Experience the original version of the popular online action game
- Counter-Strike; Counter-Strike: Condition Zero; Official Counter-Strike Bot
- Complete over a dozen tactical missions in the Tour of Duty campaign
- Simulate multiplayer games offline with bots or online with bots and humans
- 3 single-player gaming modes; extended award-winning multiplayer experience
- Prepare the Linux host. Use a Debian or Ubuntu machine if following Nexaplay’s instructions. Create a dedicated, non-root service user and install the 32-bit compatibility libraries required by that guide. Its recommendation of about 2 GB free disk space is specific to its walkthrough.
- Install and enter SteamCMD. Place SteamCMD on the host and run its shell script from the SteamCMD directory. The remaining command assumes the script is named
steamcmd.shand that the intended HLDS installation directory is../hldsrelative to the current directory. - Download HLDS with the CS 1.6 mod. Run the documented command:
./steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir ../hlds +login anonymous +app_set_config 90 mod cstrike +app_update 90 validate +quit
The command specifies anonymous login, app 90, the cstrike mod, and validation during the update. If the download stops early, Nexaplay says to repeat the update. The guide also documents a steamclient.so location fix, but the correct location depends on the setup; do not copy a path from an unrelated system without checking it against the guide and your installation.
./hlds_run -game cstrike -console -usercon +ip 0.0.0.0 +port 27015 +maxplayers 24 +map de_dust2
This example binds to 0.0.0.0, selects port 27015, sets a 24-player capacity, and starts on de_dust2. Another current setup guide uses the same HLDS and cstrike approach and describes map and player count as launch arguments. Confirm supported options against the binary or hosting panel in use; these sample values are not mandatory settings.

Once the server files are installed, configure the settings players will encounter. The cited guides describe editing cstrike/server.cfg for core server options. Steam’s setup documentation also covers graphical-server options such as map cycle and ban controls.
- Server name: Use a recognizable name so friends can identify the right server.
- Map and map cycle: Pick the starting map in the launch arguments and set a map cycle if you want the server to rotate maps. Verify that the maps named in the configuration are present in the installation.
- Player capacity: Set a slot limit appropriate for the group, within the 1–32 range listed by Steam Support.
- LAN or internet mode: Use a LAN-only setting only if access should remain local. For an internet-facing server, make sure it is not configured to remain LAN-only.
- RCON password: Use a strong, unique credential and do not share it with ordinary players. RCON provides administrative access; exposing the password can let others control server functions.
- Player password: Add one when access should be limited to invited players. Share it through a separate, appropriate channel.
- Game rules and bans: Set the rules and ban controls needed for your group, then verify behavior in a test session before opening the server more widely.
Configuration names and accepted values can depend on the server build. Use the settings documented for your HLDS version rather than assuming a directive from another Counter-Strike release will behave identically.
Make a home-hosted server reachable
For players outside your local network to join a home-hosted server, the selected server port must be allowed through the host’s firewall and forwarded by the router to the server machine. Steam Support’s router configuration guidance for Half-Life and Source dedicated servers recommends a static internal IP so the forwarding rule continues to point to the correct computer.
Rank #3
- Give the server a stable internal address. Reserve or assign an internal IP address for the host machine, using your router’s or network’s supported method. If the address changes, the router may forward traffic to the wrong device.
- Confirm the launch port. Steam lists UDP 27015 as the default. If you changed the launch port, use the selected port consistently in the server settings, firewall rule, and router rule.
- Allow the relevant traffic through the host firewall. The Linux walkthrough describes UDP for game traffic and TCP for RCON on the same numbered port. Confirm the required protocol and port for your actual configuration; do not blindly apply rules for another game or a different hosting panel.
- Create the router forwarding rule. Forward the selected port and protocol to the server’s stable internal address. A forwarding rule pointed at a changing address can stop working when the host receives a different local IP.
- Test from outside the home network. A successful connection from the host itself does not confirm that internet traffic reaches it. Ask a player on a separate connection to try joining after the server is running and the rules are saved.
A changing external address can make a long-running home server harder for returning players to find. If players cannot connect, first confirm the server process is running, then check the selected port, local firewall, router destination address, and whether the server is configured for internet rather than LAN-only access. If those checks are correct and the connection still fails, consult the router and network provider’s documentation; not every home network offers the same forwarding options.

A dedicated server is independent of a player’s game session, but it is not independent of its host machine or service. With self-hosting, the computer must stay powered on and connected, and the server process must remain active. A planned restart or machine shutdown will take the server offline. For a rented VPS or managed service, availability depends on the provider, service configuration, and account status.
Keep the installation updated with SteamCMD and validate files as appropriate to the server setup. Nexaplay specifically notes that an update may need to be repeated if a download ends early. After updating, check that the server still starts with the intended map, capacity, and configuration; avoid making a second change at the same time if you are troubleshooting, so you can identify which change caused a problem.
Back up configuration files and any custom content before changing server files or adding plugins. A backup gives you a way to restore a known configuration if an update or modification causes unexpected behavior. The cited setup sources do not establish a universal update schedule or backup frequency, so choose one that matches how often you change the server and how disruptive downtime would be.
Decide whether to add plugins
A vanilla CS 1.6 server does not require plugins. Nexaplay describes Metamod-P as a plugin loader and AMX Mod X as an optional framework, and includes Reunion in its particular configuration. Those tools are optional components, not prerequisites for running HLDS.

Only add a modification when you can explain what it does and have checked its compatibility and support status for your server build. Plugins introduce more configuration and update work; combining several at once also makes it harder to isolate a crash or unexpected gameplay change. Start with a backup and one addition at a time, then verify that the server launches and that players can join before adding more.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose between hosting at home and renting capacity
Home hosting avoids a recurring server rental charge if you already have suitable equipment, but it shifts the machine, connectivity, and maintenance responsibilities to you. A rented VPS or game-server service involves a service cost but can keep the server off your personal computer and may offer a panel or provider-managed network access. The setup sources do not give a general current price comparison, and the cheapest option depends on equipment you already own, the service’s billing model, and how much administration you are willing to do.
| Decision factor | Home-hosted HLDS | VPS or managed service |
|---|---|---|
| Machine | You provide and maintain a computer that stays online | The provider supplies server capacity |
| Network setup | You arrange firewall access and router forwarding when needed | Provider network access may be prepared, but confirm how ports are configured |
| Configuration control | Direct access to HLDS files and settings | Varies by plan and panel; verify access to files, maps, and plugins |
| Cost model | Uses existing equipment and home connectivity; no general cost figure is established by the cited guides | May be recurring or usage-based; check the service’s current terms |
| Location and latency | Server location is limited by where your host and connection are | Choose an available location suitable for the players; the cited guides provide no comparative ping measurements |
| Backups and support | You arrange your own backups and troubleshooting | Included support and backup coverage vary; verify them before committing |
One cited guide describes hourly deployment as a service model, not as evidence that every provider bills hourly. Compare the actual billing basis, cancellation terms, included support, backup policy, and server location before purchasing capacity. Do not assume that a managed panel will support a particular plugin or grant full shell access.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The download stops before installation finishes
Nexaplay’s Linux walkthrough says to repeat the SteamCMD update if the download stops early. Run the update again and check that it completes before starting HLDS. If it continues to fail, check that the host has working network access and enough free disk space for the installation.

The server starts but outside players cannot join
Check that the launch port matches the firewall and router rules, that the forwarding rule points to the server’s current internal address, and that the correct protocol is allowed. Also verify that the configuration is not LAN-only. Steam’s default port is UDP 27015, but use the actual configured port if you changed it.

Players can join locally but not from the internet
A local test does not prove the router is forwarding external traffic. Confirm the router rule targets the stable internal address, then test from a separate internet connection. If your router or network does not provide the forwarding controls your setup needs, a home-hosted public server may not be practical on that connection; consider a hosted server instead.
The server launches with the wrong map or slot count
Check the launch arguments and any panel settings for conflicting values. The sample launch command sets the map with +map and capacity with +maxplayers; use the intended map and slot count, and check the server’s output after startup.
A plugin causes instability
Return to the last known working configuration, then test the server without the new plugin. Check the plugin’s compatibility and support status before reintroducing it. Add modifications individually so that a failure has a smaller set of likely causes.
What Steam’s server setup does—and does not—require
Steam Support’s Setting up a Steam Half-Life Dedicated Server page states: “You do not need to register any games to your server account in order to host games.” The same page lists the 1–32 player range and UDP 27015 as the default port. These details concern server setup; they do not establish how many CS 1.6 servers or players are active, nor do they guarantee performance on a particular home connection or hosting plan.
