To host CRIF – Create an empire of Rats to fight Ice & Fire, first choose one exact Minecraft and Forge release, then install that same release on the server and every player’s client. The available listings show CRIF releases for Minecraft 1.16.5 and 1.18.2, while ScalaCube’s documented one-click package targets 1.16.5. Treat the often-quoted 8 GB server figure and 5 GB client figure as planning guidance, not tested minimums.
What CRIF is and why the exact release matters
CRIF is the lightweight Minecraft modpack commonly listed as CRIF – Create an empire of Rats to fight Ice & Fire. Its design combines three different play styles:

- Create provides mechanical automation, processing lines, transport systems and large construction projects.
- Rats adds controllable creatures and utility systems that can automate farms and passive resource gathering.
- Ice & Fire supplies hostile fantasy creatures and combat objectives, giving an exploration and progression reason to build better equipment.
The result is a pack intended to balance building, automation and adventure rather than focusing on only one of them. Community descriptions also call it a light pack centered on Create and Ice & Fire; some servers add custom recipes or other configuration changes, so a public server’s behavior may not match an unmodified release.

CurseForge metadata shows CRIF entries associated with Forge for both Minecraft 1.16.5 and Minecraft 1.18.2. ScalaCube’s CRIF hosting page identifies its package as Minecraft 1.16.5. These are separate release lines, not interchangeable files.

Release choices shown by the listings
| Minecraft line | Loader information | What the listing establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 1.16.5 | Forge | Appears in CurseForge metadata; ScalaCube documents its CRIF package for this line. |
| 1.18.2 | Forge | Appears in CurseForge metadata; the supplied hosting page does not establish a matching one-click package. |
Before downloading anything, write down the pack’s exact release name, Minecraft version and Forge version. Install that same combination on the server and on every client. A 1.16.5 client cannot join a 1.18.2 server, and a different Forge build can produce missing-mod, registry or handshake errors even when the Minecraft version appears correct.
Choose a hosting route
Managed hosting
A managed host is the shortest path when the provider offers CRIF as an installable game-server package. The provider handles the machine, basic network reachability and the control panel. You still need to verify the selected release, memory allocation, backups and modpack-file access before inviting players.
For a managed Minecraft modpack route, Godlike.Host offers Minecraft Java and modded Minecraft servers with a Pterodactyl-based game panel, a built-in mod installer and one-click modpacks; verify that the exact CRIF release is available before deploying.

Self-hosting
Self-hosting gives you control over files, configuration and backups, but you are responsible for the operating system, Java runtime required by the chosen release, firewall rules, router configuration, updates and recovery. The available material does not establish a universal Java version, port-forwarding recipe or minimum hardware benchmark, so use the exact server instructions bundled with your selected CRIF release rather than copying settings from another Minecraft version.
Install CRIF with ScalaCube’s documented one-click flow
ScalaCube documents a provider-specific three-step process. The labels below are the exact path given for its control panel:
- Get a Minecraft server from ScalaCube. Create or open the server that will run the pack.
- Open the game-server installer: Servers → select your server → Game servers → Add Game Server.
- Select CRIF – Create an empire of Rats to fight ‘Ice&Fire’, complete the installation and start the server.
This workflow is specific to that provider and does not prove that every CRIF release is available there. The documented package is for Minecraft 1.16.5, so do not select it when your group has agreed to a 1.18.2 release. After installation, open the panel’s file or version information and record the installed pack and Forge versions before configuring clients.

Managed-host checks before players join
- Confirm that the server is running the same CRIF release selected by the players.
- Check the panel’s allocated memory and leave headroom for the operating system and file cache.
- Enable the host’s scheduled backups if available, then make a manual backup before changing mods or recipes.
- Find the panel’s address and connection instructions; players should use the address supplied by the host rather than guessing a local network address.
- Run a test join with one client before announcing the server to the whole group.
Self-host CRIF on your own machine
The following process is deliberately release-neutral because the supplied listings do not establish one Java build or one universal Forge installer command. Use the server package and instructions for the exact CRIF release you selected.
- Create a dedicated server folder. Keep the CRIF server separate from vanilla worlds and other modpacks. Use a short path with enough free disk space for the world, logs, backups and future updates.
- Obtain the server files for the chosen release. Download the pack’s server distribution or create the Forge server installation using the release author’s instructions. Do not mix files from the 1.16.5 and 1.18.2 lines.
- Install the required Java runtime. The correct Java major version depends on the Minecraft/Forge release. Check the release documentation and verify the runtime before the first launch; the available listing does not establish one version that is safe for every CRIF build.
- Launch once to generate files. Start the Forge server with the launch method supplied by the distribution. Stop it after the first run, read the generated license file and set the EULA value to accept only if you agree to Minecraft’s terms.
- Set memory deliberately. Configure the server’s startup memory in the launcher or script supplied with the pack. ScalaCube gives 8 GB as the usual CRIF RAM figure; use that as a planning target, not a guaranteed minimum, and reserve memory for the operating system.
- Install the exact mods and configuration. The server’s
modsand configuration files must come from the same CRIF release as the clients. If the pack provides a server bundle, prefer it over manually assembling individual mods. - Start and test locally. Join from the same machine or local network first. Watch the console for missing dependencies, duplicate mods, registry errors and out-of-memory messages before exposing the server to the internet.
- Configure remote access. Allow the server application through the host firewall and configure the router or network gateway according to its documentation. The exact port and forwarding steps are not established by the available CRIF listings, so do not assume a value from a different pack or edition.
- Document the working setup. Record the Minecraft version, Forge version, CRIF release, Java version, memory setting and the location of backups. This makes a later rebuild reproducible.
Plan RAM and hardware realistically
Two figures are commonly associated with CRIF, but they describe different situations and should not be treated as measured requirements.
| Use case | Published guidance | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Hosted or server planning | ScalaCube says to use the usual 8 GB of RAM for CRIF. | Use 8 GB as a starting allocation for a server, then observe actual usage with your host’s monitoring or operating-system tools. |
| Player client | A community post recommends at least 5 GB dedicated to the client for roughly 8–10 chunks of render distance. | Treat this as community guidance for that play pattern, not a certified minimum. Lower render distance or other settings may change the result. |
| Local hardware example | An 8 GB RAM module is a practical hardware example based on the server guidance. | Check DDR generation, motherboard support, available slots and whether the machine needs additional memory for the operating system and other services. |
Do not confuse an 8 GB module with 8 GB available to the Java process. A computer running the server also needs memory for the operating system, backups, monitoring and any desktop applications. On a shared machine, close unnecessary programs and leave enough headroom to prevent swapping.
Rank #4
- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
Signs that memory is the problem
- The server log reports an out-of-memory failure or the process is terminated by the operating system.
- World loading pauses coincide with memory reaching the allocation limit.
- Players experience long stalls after exploring new terrain while the server repeatedly performs garbage collection.
Reduce unnecessary background processes first, then lower client render distance or move the server to a machine with more available memory. Do not simply raise the allocation until the operating system has no free memory left.
Prepare every player’s client
- Have every player select the same CRIF release that the server runs.
- Use the same Minecraft version and Forge loader line shown by the server installation.
- Install the pack through the distribution method specified for that release. Avoid adding extra mods until a clean client has joined successfully.
- Allocate client memory conservatively. The community guidance of 5 GB is associated with about 8–10 chunks of render distance; it is not a universal requirement.
- Launch once in single-player or the pack’s title screen, then connect using the server address and any provider-specific port information.
If one player can join and another cannot, compare the two installations rather than changing the server immediately. The usual differences are Minecraft version, Forge version, a missing mod, an extra mod, a changed configuration file or a damaged download.
Network and access checklist
Network setup differs between a managed host, a home router and a private LAN. The following checks apply to all three:
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
- Use the address intended for the players’ network. A private LAN address normally works only inside the same home network; remote players need the public address or managed-host address.
- Allow the server process through the machine’s firewall. If the firewall prompts for separate private and public networks, choose only the network profiles you understand.
- On a home connection, configure router forwarding only after the local test succeeds, and secure the server with an allow-list or other access control where appropriate.
- Check whether your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound connections. If so, ordinary forwarding may not work and you may need a different hosting arrangement.
- Give players the exact address and port shown by the host or by your configured server settings. The available CRIF material does not establish a universal port number.
Backups, updates and world safety
Create backups before changing the pack, Forge, Java runtime, recipes or configuration. A useful backup includes the world folders, server configuration, mod list, scripts and the release notes or version identifier needed to recreate the installation.
- Stop the server cleanly before copying a world. A live copy can miss region data that is still being written.
- Keep at least one backup away from the server machine so a disk failure cannot destroy both copies.
- Test a backup by restoring it to a separate folder and launching a temporary instance. A file that exists is not necessarily a usable backup.
- When updating, duplicate the current server folder, apply the change to the copy and test with one player before replacing the production world.
- Never open a world in a newer Minecraft line and then attempt to return it to an older one without a verified backup.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| “Incompatible version” or a handshake failure | Minecraft or Forge mismatch. | Compare the server’s recorded versions with every client and reinstall the exact CRIF release where necessary. |
| Missing-mod or dependency error | A client or server has an incomplete or altered mod set. | Start from the official release or server bundle, remove additions, and compare the mods directory with a known-good installation. |
| Server starts, but the world will not load | Insufficient memory, a damaged configuration or an incompatible world update. | Read the first error in the log, restore the last known-good backup and test the pack in a new world before touching the existing save. |
| Local players can connect but remote players cannot | Firewall, router forwarding, carrier-grade NAT or an incorrect address. | Verify local access first, then check firewall and router status and whether the internet connection permits inbound traffic. |
| Severe pauses while exploring | Terrain generation, memory pressure or an overloaded shared machine. | Watch memory and system usage, reduce unnecessary workloads, and consider a machine or plan with more headroom. |
| One player sees different recipes or behavior | Custom server configuration or a client that is not using the same pack files. | Compare configuration files and confirm whether the server intentionally uses custom recipes; do not overwrite server settings with a client copy. |
Compare hosting options before paying
The available information confirms ScalaCube’s one-click CRIF path and its 8 GB guidance, but it does not establish current prices, player limits or plan specifications. Ask a provider for the following facts in writing and verify them against the exact release you intend to run.
| Comparison point | What to verify | Established for CRIF here |
|---|---|---|
| One-click installation | Whether CRIF appears in the control panel and which release it installs. | ScalaCube documents a one-click CRIF installation. |
| Minecraft and Forge version | The precise versions supplied by the package. | CRIF listings include 1.16.5 and 1.18.2; ScalaCube’s documented package is 1.16.5. |
| Allocated RAM | Dedicated versus shared memory and the upgrade path. | ScalaCube gives 8 GB as usual guidance; current plan limits are not stated. |
| Player capacity | Whether the limit is technical, contractual or adjustable. | Not stated. |
| Storage and backups | Disk quota, snapshot frequency, retention and restore process. | Not stated. |
| Network location | Datacenter region, latency and any traffic limits. | Not stated. |
| Modpack file access | Whether you can upload server files, edit configs and install a specific release. | Not stated. |
| Price | Recurring cost, setup fees and charges for extra memory or backups. | Not stated. |
What to expect when the server is running
Early sessions usually alternate between Create projects, Rats automation and Ice & Fire exploration. Build a safe storage and workshop area before sending players into dangerous territory, then expand automation as resource demands grow. Because the pack’s appeal comes from combining these systems, a server that disables one of the major mods or uses a different configuration can feel substantially different from the standard CRIF experience.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep render distance and simulation settings within what the server can sustain. The community’s 8–10-chunk example is tied to a client with about 5 GB allocated; it is not a promise that every server, world or hardware combination will maintain the same distance smoothly. Change one setting at a time and observe server tick time, memory use and player latency.
Quick Recap
Final launch checklist
- Exact CRIF release chosen and recorded.
- Minecraft version identical on server and clients.
- Forge loader line identical on server and clients.
- Server files installed from the matching release, with no accidental cross-version mods.
- Memory allocation planned around the available guidance, with operating-system headroom.
- EULA accepted through the server’s generated file after the first launch.
- Local connection tested before remote access is configured.
- Firewall, router or managed-host address verified for the intended players.
- World and configuration backup created and, ideally, restored in a test copy.
- One clean client has joined successfully before the full group connects.
