Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
The reliable way to host Craft to Exile 2 is to use the dedicated Craft to Exile 2 SERVER-2.1.4.zip for the matching Craft to Exile 2-2.1.4.zip client release, run it with a 64-bit Java 17 JDK, and allocate 4–8 GB of memory. You can run the server on a Windows, Linux, or macOS computer, deploy it on a VPS, pay for a managed host, or use a containerized setup if you are comfortable administering Docker.
This guide covers the current 1.20.1 Forge release listed on CurseForge on October 18, 2026. Both the client and server files were released September 10, 2026. Keeping those files, the Forge loader, and Java aligned prevents most connection failures.

What you need before hosting
Craft to Exile 2 is a Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge modpack built around exploration and customization. Its project page lists more than 250 quests, including a campaign, quest shops, and an epilogue. The project had 2,810,521 downloads on CurseForge when checked on October 18, 2026, so players are likely to encounter several community guides and server configurations; those guides may target older releases.
- Matching files: Download
Craft to Exile 2 SERVER-2.1.4.zipfor the server and installCraft to Exile 2-2.1.4.zipon every player’s client. - Java: Install a 64-bit Java 17 JDK. A Java runtime alone is not always sufficient for modded server scripts.
- Memory: Reserve 4–8 GB of RAM for the server. Leave enough memory for the operating system and any other applications on the machine.
- Storage: Use a dedicated folder on fast, reliable storage and leave room for world growth, backups, logs, and future updates.
- Network: A self-hosted public server requires port forwarding from your router to the computer running Minecraft.
- Administration: Plan backups, updates, monitoring, and periodic restarts before inviting players.
Do not start with a vanilla 1.20.1 server and copy assorted client mods into it. The dedicated server archive contains the server-side files and configuration expected by the pack.

Choose a hosting method
The right option depends on whether you value control, simplicity, or an always-on world. The following choices are distinct operating models rather than different versions of the modpack.
| Path | Best for | Key requirements | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-host on a PC or VPS | Owners who want full control | 64-bit Java 17, 4–8 GB RAM, server ZIP, port forwarding for a home machine | Lowest service cost, but you handle networking, updates, backups, security, and uptime |
| Akliz or another automatic modpack host | Players who want a managed control panel | A hosting plan, the pack selected in the panel, and confirmation that Craft to Exile 2 2.1.4 is supported | Fast deployment and less operating-system work, in exchange for recurring cost and less low-level control |
| Essential Host World | A small private group that plays when the host is available | Every player installs the current 1.20.1 Essential release in the pack and adds the host as a friend | Simple in-game hosting, but it is not a conventional always-on dedicated server; the host must be online |
| Docker Compose | Experienced Linux or container administrators | Docker Compose, a CurseForge API key, the server ZIP, persistent storage, and YAML/terminal skills | Repeatable deployments and easy separation of files, with more technical setup and container maintenance |
Self-host on Windows, Linux, or macOS
This route gives you direct access to the files and console. It is suitable for a spare desktop, a home server, or a VPS. A home PC is practical for a few friends if it has sufficient memory and a stable connection, but it must remain powered on whenever people want to play.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →1. Install and verify Java 17
Install a 64-bit Java 17 JDK on the server machine. If another Java version is already installed, the pack’s scripts may select the wrong executable. On Windows, edit the server’s launch script or environment so it points directly to the Java 17 executable. On Linux and macOS, check which Java the shell resolves and set the script’s Java path explicitly when multiple versions are present.
The important check is the major version, not merely whether a command named java runs. A newer or older major release can cause Forge to fail during startup or produce confusing mod-loading errors.
2. Download the dedicated server archive
From the Craft to Exile 2 project files on CurseForge, download Craft to Exile 2 SERVER-2.1.4.zip. Create a dedicated folder such as CraftToExile2Server and extract the archive there. Keep this folder separate from your client installation, downloads folder, and unrelated Minecraft worlds.
Every player should install the matching Craft to Exile 2-2.1.4.zip client release. Do not mix a 2.1.4 server with an older client or replace individual mods from a different pack version.
3. Start the server once
- On Windows, double-click or run
run.batfrom the extracted server folder. - On Linux or macOS, open a terminal in that folder and run
run.sh. If the file is not executable, grant execute permission and run it again. - Wait for the first startup to finish. Forge may create libraries, configuration files, logs, and the world directory; this can take longer than later launches.
- Stop the process cleanly from its console after it has generated the initial files. Avoid closing the terminal or killing the process while files are being written.
If the script exits immediately, inspect the console and log for a Java-path error, a permission problem, or a failed library download before changing any pack files.
4. Enable command blocks as recommended
Open the generated server configuration and set:
enable-command-block=true
The project wiki recommends this setting for the pack. Save the file before the next launch. Keep operator permissions limited to people you trust, because command blocks and operator commands can alter or destroy a world.

5. Set memory deliberately
The project wiki recommends allocating at least 4–8 GB of RAM. Start at 4 GB for a small group and increase toward 8 GB if the world, exploration range, or player count causes memory pressure. Do not assign all physical RAM to Java: the operating system, file cache, Java overhead, and other services still need memory.
Watch actual behavior rather than assuming that a larger heap fixes every lag problem. A server that pauses during garbage collection, runs out of CPU time, or waits on slow storage will not become healthy simply by receiving more RAM.

6. Forward the Minecraft port
A server running on your computer is reachable only on your local network until the router forwards the Minecraft port to that computer. Give the host machine a stable local address, create a router forwarding rule for the port used by the server, and allow the Java server through the operating system firewall. The project wiki points users to its Modded Minecraft Discord’s ??portforwarding guidance and recommends checking the result with a port-checking site.
- Reserve or assign a fixed local IP address to the host computer.
- In the router’s port-forwarding page, forward the Minecraft TCP/UDP traffic to that local IP. Use the port configured by the server; do not assume a different port without checking the configuration.
- Allow the Java process and the selected port through the host operating system’s firewall.
- Test from outside your home network. Testing from the same Wi-Fi can produce a false result on routers that do not support loopback.
- Give friends your public address and port, not the private address beginning with ranges such as
192.168or10..
Port forwarding exposes a service to the internet. Keep the server software current, use strong operator credentials, and do not expose unrelated administration interfaces. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary port forwarding may not work; use a VPS or managed host instead of weakening your network security.
7. Connect with a matching client
Launch the 2.1.4 client, use the multiplayer screen, and enter the host’s public address. If a player cannot join, first compare the client pack version, server pack version, Forge loader, and Java major version. A mismatch in any one of those is more likely than a random mod failure.
Use managed hosting
A managed Minecraft provider removes most of the manual Java installation, router configuration, process supervision, and uptime work. The project wiki documents an Akliz workflow and notes that other hosts with automatic modpack setup are similar.

Typical deployment process
- Create a plan with enough memory for the pack; use the project’s 4–8 GB recommendation as the starting point.
- In the provider’s modpack selector, choose Craft to Exile 2 and verify that the available server release is 2.1.4, not merely a similarly named 1.20.1 pack.
- Allow the panel to install the server files and complete the first startup.
- Confirm the Java and Forge versions shown by the panel, then set
enable-command-block=trueif the provider does not preserve that setting automatically. - Use the panel’s address and port to connect with clients running the exact 2.1.4 pack.
- Configure scheduled backups and restarts before inviting players.
Confirm current support, pricing, storage limits, backup retention, and cancellation terms before paying. Automatic installation does not guarantee that a provider has the newest server ZIP on the day you need it. If the panel lacks the release, upload the server files manually only when the host permits it and you understand how its startup system works. FileZilla or WinSCP can be used for FTP-based file changes where the provider supports FTP access.
Managed hosting is usually the better fit when the server must stay online while you are away, several people depend on it, or your router cannot accept inbound connections. It is less suitable when you need unrestricted access to the operating system or want to experiment with custom services beside Minecraft.

Host a private world with Essential
For a small friend group that plays at the same time, Essential provides an in-game alternative to a dedicated server. Install the latest 1.20.1 Essential release included for the pack on every player’s client.
- Open the pack and use the in-game Social menu to add your friends.
- Choose Host World from the available multiplayer options.
- Invite the friends you added and load the world.
- Keep the host’s game running while others play.
This method avoids router configuration and server-file administration, but the world is not an always-on dedicated instance. If the host closes the game, loses connectivity, or is unavailable, the group cannot continue playing until that host returns.
Deploy with Docker Compose
Docker is useful when you already administer Linux containers and want a repeatable deployment. A community Compose implementation uses the itzg/minecraft-server image, persistent world and configuration storage, CurseForge synchronization, RCON, health checks, and a 6 GB memory setting.
What the container route requires
- Docker Engine and Docker Compose.
- A CurseForge API key for automated pack synchronization.
- The Craft to Exile 2 server ZIP.
- Persistent volumes or bind mounts for the world, configuration, and other data that must survive container replacement.
- Comfort editing YAML and reading container logs.
Review the Compose file before starting it. Confirm where the world is stored, which ports are published, how the API key is supplied, and whether RCON is exposed beyond the local machine. RCON is an administration interface; exposing it publicly without access controls creates an avoidable security risk.
Start and operate the container
- Place the Compose file, environment settings, and server ZIP in a controlled project directory.
- Set the CurseForge API key and verify the persistent storage paths.
- Publish only the Minecraft port and any administration port you have secured.
- Start the stack with
docker compose up -d. - Read the logs until Forge reports that the server is ready, then connect with the 2.1.4 client.
- Use the project’s documented log, stop, restart, update, and backup procedures rather than deleting containers or volumes manually.
Containerization does not remove the need for version discipline. Pin the pack release, preserve the world volume, and test updates on a backup before applying them to the live instance.
Back up and update without losing the world
Backups are essential before a modpack update, Java change, configuration edit, or major world exploration session. At minimum, copy the world directory, server.properties, and your custom configuration to storage that is not the live server disk. Keep more than one backup generation so a damaged newest copy does not become your only recovery point.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSafe update sequence
- Announce maintenance and stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the world save,
server.properties, and custom configuration to a dated backup location. - Record the current pack, Forge, Java, and any manually installed additions.
- Read the project’s update instructions for the target release.
- Remove only the pack/configuration folders and, when the Forge version changes, the libraries and launcher scripts specified by those instructions.
- Install the matching new server ZIP.
- Start the server and inspect the console for missing mods, failed migrations, or configuration errors.
- Join with one client first and verify the spawn area, inventories, quests, dimensions, and key server settings.
The project wiki explicitly says not to delete the world save or server.properties during an update. Deleting those items can reset the world or erase server-specific settings. If an update fails, stop the server, restore the previous files from backup, and diagnose the log before trying again.
Keep a long-running server healthy
The project wiki recommends an automatic restart every six hours for a server that remains running. Schedule restarts during the quietest period for your group and warn players beforehand so nobody is writing to the world during shutdown.

- Monitor disk space: World data, logs, backups, and crash reports grow over time.
- Watch CPU and memory: Persistent high usage can indicate too many loaded chunks, a runaway process, or insufficient hardware.
- Keep backups off the live disk: A failed drive or corrupted filesystem can otherwise destroy both the world and its backup.
- Restrict privileges: Give operator access only to trusted administrators.
- Document changes: Record manual mod additions, configuration edits, and update dates so you can reproduce or reverse them.
- Test recovery: Periodically restore a copy of the world to a separate instance to verify that backups are usable.
For lag diagnosis, the wiki points to Crash Utilities, opened with F12, and Spark. Use them to identify whether a crash, tick-time spike, or specific mod operation is responsible instead of removing random files.
Troubleshoot the problems players see most
“Incompatible mod list” or a failed connection
Compare the exact client and server filenames first: both should be the 2.1.4 release. Then compare Forge loader versions and Java major versions. Remove any client-only additions that were not part of the official pack and do not copy individual server files from another release.

Run the launch script from a terminal so the error remains visible. Check that the machine is using a 64-bit Java 17 JDK, that the script can read and write its folder, and that the required libraries downloaded successfully. A conflicting Java installation or a permissions error is a common cause of an immediate exit.
Friends cannot reach a home server
Verify the server is listening on the configured port, the operating-system firewall allows Java, and the router forwards that same port to the correct local IP. Test from a genuinely external network. If the connection uses carrier-grade NAT, move the server to a VPS or managed host rather than exposing workarounds that your router cannot support.
The server is reachable but lags badly
Check available RAM, CPU saturation, disk latency, and the number of players exploring new areas. Use Spark and Crash Utilities to locate tick-time or crash causes. Increase memory only when monitoring shows memory pressure; otherwise address the actual CPU, storage, or mod workload.
An update resets settings or damages the world
Stop immediately and restore the last known-good world and configuration backup. Re-read the update instructions and remove only the folders they identify. Never include the world save or server.properties in a blanket deletion step.
Which option should you choose?
- Choose a home PC or VPS when you want maximum control, can maintain Java and Forge, and are comfortable with networking and backups.
- Choose managed hosting when reliable uptime and a control panel matter more than operating-system access, and the provider confirms support for Craft to Exile 2 2.1.4.
- Choose Essential Host World when the group is small, sessions are scheduled, and nobody needs an always-on world.
- Choose Docker Compose when you already use containers and value repeatable configuration enough to accept the additional YAML, API-key, storage, and security work.
Whichever path you take, the non-negotiable setup is the same: use the dedicated 2.1.4 server archive, run a 64-bit Java 17 JDK, allocate 4–8 GB of RAM, keep clients on the matching pack release, and protect the world with tested backups.
