Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
For the original Cottage Witch pack and Cottage Witch: Recast, the dependable setup is Minecraft 1.19.2 running on Forge with Java 17. Choose a managed host for a one-click installation, or install the matching Forge server and pack files yourself. Plan memory by player count, verify which Java executable the launch script uses, and make sure every player installs the same pack release.
What you need before hosting
Cottage Witch is not a vanilla server. The server, launcher profile and every connecting client must agree on the Minecraft version, Forge loader and modpack release. The original pack and the Recast variant both target Minecraft 1.19.2 and use Forge. No supplied listing identifies a NeoForge build for this pack, so selecting NeoForge is not a supported substitute.
- Game version: Minecraft 1.19.2.
- Loader: Forge for 1.19.2.
- Java: Java 17; verify the executable used by the server launch script rather than assuming the system default is correct.
- Server files: Use the server pack belonging to the exact Cottage Witch release your players install.
- Storage: Leave room for the server files, generated world, backups, logs and future updates. The Recast 1.5.4 server archive listed on CurseForge is 410.3 MB before world growth and backups.
- Networking: For internet play, the host machine needs an inbound connection allowed through its firewall and network gateway. A local-only game needs no public exposure.
Choose the correct Cottage Witch edition
There are two similarly named packs. Confirm the name shown in the launcher and on the files page before downloading anything.
| Edition | Minecraft and loader | Published memory guidance | Version note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Cottage Witch | Minecraft 1.19.2 with Forge | BisectHosting lists 6 GB; Apex Hosting gives 6–8 GB depending on player count | Use the exact Forge build and server files supplied for the selected pack release |
| Cottage Witch: Recast | Minecraft 1.19.2 with Forge | CurseForge lists 4 GB for five or fewer players and 8 GB for fewer than 10; StickyPiston recommends starting at 8 GB and 9 GB for a public server; the 1.5.4 file page states 6–8 GB | The 1.5.4 server pack listed on CurseForge was uploaded September 11, 2024; check the files tab for a newer release before installation |
The numbers are recommendations from different publishers, not a guaranteed minimum or a benchmark. World size, chunk loading, automation, exploration and the number of simultaneous players all change the real requirement. Start at the upper end of the applicable range if the server will be public or heavily automated, and monitor memory and tick performance after players begin exploring.

How much RAM should the server have?
Original Cottage Witch
Allocate 6 GB as the baseline published recommendation. Apex Hosting describes a 6–8 GB range that varies with player count. A small private group may work near the lower figure, while a busy world, many loaded chunks or several concurrent players justify the higher allocation.
Cottage Witch: Recast
The published guidance is broader. CurseForge’s Recast information gives 4 GB for five or fewer players and 8 GB for fewer than 10. StickyPiston suggests beginning with 8 GB and using 9 GB for a public server. The Recast 1.5.4 file page lists 6–8 GB. Treat 4 GB as a small-group starting point rather than a universal target; choose more headroom when the server is public or players are exploring in different directions.

Do not give all system memory to Java
On a self-hosted machine, the operating system, Java process, file cache and other services also need memory. Leave several gigabytes outside the server allocation so the host does not start swapping. On a managed plan, select the plan’s RAM amount and check whether the panel reserves memory for the operating system.
Watch behavior, not only the allocation
- Repeated out-of-memory errors or a process that is killed by the host indicate that the allocation is too low or that another process is consuming memory.
- Long pauses while new terrain generates can be caused by CPU or storage limits, not just RAM.
- Steady lag when several players travel in different directions usually means the machine is handling more chunk work than its CPU or storage can process.
Use Java 17 and verify the launch script
Forge 1.19.2 is generally run with Java 17. A Forge forum reply notes that a generated run.bat can pick up a newer installed Java, so installing Java 17 is not enough if the script still points elsewhere. A Minecraft wiki entry places the surrounding 1.18 generation on Java 17 as well; for this pack, use Java 17 as the practical compatibility target.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
- Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime or JDK on the server computer.
- Open a terminal or Command Prompt and run
java -version. Confirm that the reported major version is 17. - After Forge creates the launch scripts, open
run.baton Windows (or the corresponding shell script on Linux) and inspect the Java command. If it resolves to a newer Java installation, change the command to the full path of the Java 17 executable. - Run the script again and read the first lines of the console. They should show Java 17 and Forge starting for Minecraft 1.19.2.
Do not mix a client on one Java/Forge combination with a server built for a different loader. If the console reports an unsupported class version, a missing library or an immediate exit, check the executable path before changing mods.
Option 1: install with a managed Minecraft host
Managed hosting is the shortest route because the provider supplies the operating system, Java process, storage and network endpoint. CreeperHost, BisectHosting, Apex Hosting and Game Host Bros have listed Cottage Witch as a preinstalled option, although catalogues change. Confirm the pack name, Minecraft version and available Forge build in the panel at the time you order.

- Create or open the server in the provider’s control panel.
- Open the modpack, mod-loader or software installer section.
- Search for
Cottage Witch. If both editions appear, select the edition your players will use. - Select the desired release, not merely the newest similarly named entry. For Recast, compare the release number with the client profile.
- Apply the installation and restart the server when the panel requests it. Apex’s documented flow is to search for the pack, select it and restart.
- Set the server name, world options, access controls and player permissions in the panel or generated configuration files.
- Copy the address and port shown by the host, then test with one client before inviting the entire group.
What to check on a managed plan
- Memory ceiling: Make sure the selected plan covers the range for your edition and player count. A plan can show a nominal amount while reserving some memory for the platform.
- File access: You need a file manager or SFTP access to inspect logs, upload a server pack and retrieve backups.
- Version control: The panel should let you pin a specific pack release. Automatic updates can break a world if clients update at different times.
- Backups: Confirm frequency, retention and whether restoring a backup includes the world, configuration and mod files.
- Java selection: If the panel exposes a Java version selector, choose Java 17. If it does not, inspect the startup log for the runtime version.
A managed installation avoids port-forwarding and most operating-system maintenance, but it does not remove the need to match client and server files. A player who installs a different release can still receive missing-mod, registry or protocol errors.

Option 2: self-host the server
Self-hosting gives you control over files, backups and configuration. It also makes you responsible for Java, Forge, firewall rules, uptime and recovery. Use a separate server directory rather than installing into a player’s regular Minecraft folder.
Step 1: obtain the exact pack files
Open the Cottage Witch or Cottage Witch: Recast files page and identify the release your group will use. Download its server pack when one is provided, and note the Minecraft version and loader displayed on that page. The exact Forge build number for the pack is not established in the available listings, so do not guess it: use the build named by the release’s files and instructions.
For Recast, the 1.5.4 listing includes a 1.19.2 Forge server pack measuring 410.3 MB. That figure describes the archive, not the final disk space after extraction and world generation.

Step 2: prepare Java and a clean folder
- Create a directory dedicated to the server, such as a folder named for the chosen release.
- Install Java 17 and verify it with
java -version. - Keep the downloaded server-pack archive, Forge installer and any checksum or release notes in a temporary location until the server starts successfully.
Step 3: install Forge 1.19.2 as a server
- Run the Forge installer that belongs to the pack’s 1.19.2 release.
- Choose Install server and select the dedicated server directory.
- Let the installer download or create the libraries and launch scripts. Do not replace the generated Forge files with a NeoForge installation.
- Compare the generated Forge version with the version named on the pack’s files page. If they differ, stop and obtain the matching installer.
Step 4: add the modpack server files
Extract the pack’s server archive into the Forge server directory, preserving its folder structure. If the archive contains a mods directory, configuration directory or scripts, merge them into the corresponding server directories rather than nesting the entire archive inside a second folder. Keep an untouched copy of the original archive so you can restore files after an unsuccessful edit.
Step 5: perform the first launch
- Run the generated Forge start script once. The first run may create configuration files and stop while the server records its licensing requirement.
- Read the console output and follow the on-screen instruction to accept the Minecraft EULA in the generated file, if prompted.
- Start the script again and wait for the message indicating that the server is ready for connections.
- Stop the server from the console with its normal stop command before editing files. Never close the window forcefully during world saves.
Step 6: bind the correct Java executable
Recheck the generated script after the first launch. If the operating system selected a different Java installation, edit the script so its command begins with the full path to Java 17. Preserve the Forge arguments generated by the installer; changing only the executable path avoids accidentally dropping required libraries or memory flags.
Step 7: configure the server
With the server stopped, edit the generated server configuration for the name, difficulty, game mode, access list and operator permissions you want. Change one setting at a time, save a backup of the file, then restart and verify the result in-game. Keep configuration changes in a dated notes file so a future pack update does not overwrite settings you need.

Step 8: make it reachable
- For a same-network test, connect using the host computer’s local address.
- For internet play, allow the server process through the host firewall and configure the network gateway to forward the server’s listening port to the host computer.
- If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound connections, ordinary port forwarding may not work; use a managed host or another access method rather than exposing random ports.
- Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot. A local connection can succeed even when outside players cannot reach the server.
Step 9: test with one client
- Install the same Cottage Witch edition and release on the test computer.
- Launch Minecraft 1.19.2 with Forge, not a vanilla or NeoForge profile.
- Connect using the address shown by your host or the public address configured for self-hosting.
- Join, move through several areas, open inventories and use representative modded blocks. Watch the server console for missing-resource, registry or ticking errors.
- Only after the test succeeds should you give the address to the rest of the group.
Keep clients and server on one release
Modded clients are not interchangeable just because they share a Minecraft version. The loader, mod list, configuration and often the pack’s dependency versions must match. Distribute the same launcher profile or installation instructions to every player. When you change the server pack, schedule a short maintenance window, back up the world, update the server and have every player update before reconnecting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf a player sees a missing-mod or mismatched-channel message, compare the profile’s pack name and release number first. If the server log reports a registry mismatch after an update, restore the previous server files and world backup rather than deleting random mods.
Backups and updates
Back up before every change
- Stop the server cleanly so pending chunks are written.
- Copy the world directory, server configuration, mod list and scripts to storage outside the live server folder.
- Keep at least one backup from before the update and one from after a known-good startup.
- Periodically test restoring a copy to a separate directory; a backup that has never been restored is unverified.
Check for newer releases
The Recast 1.5.4 file identified here was uploaded on September 11, 2024. That is not a statement that it remains current on October 14, 2026. Before installing, open the current files tab, select the intended release and verify that its Minecraft version, loader and server-pack availability still match. The same check applies to the original pack.
Do not update only the server or only the clients. Pin the release, record the date, take a backup and update both sides as one change. If the pack author changes loader or Minecraft version in a future branch, treat it as a migration rather than an in-place patch.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The server exits immediately with a Java or class-version error | The script is using a Java version other than 17 | Run java -version, inspect run.bat or its equivalent, and point it explicitly to Java 17 |
| Forge starts but the pack behaves like vanilla | The server pack was not extracted into the Forge directory, or the wrong loader was installed | Stop the server, verify the expected mods and configuration directories are in the active folder, and reinstall the matching Forge server if necessary |
| Players receive missing-mod or registry errors | Client and server releases, loaders or dependency files differ | Compare the exact pack release on both machines; restore the previous backup if the mismatch followed an update |
| The process is killed or reports out-of-memory errors | Insufficient allocation for the edition, player count or loaded world | Move toward the upper end of the published range, leave memory for the operating system, and reduce simultaneous exploration while testing |
| The server is reachable locally but not from the internet | Firewall, gateway forwarding, public-address or carrier-NAT problem | Allow the process through the firewall, verify forwarding to the correct host, test from another network, and check whether the provider permits inbound connections |
| Players can connect but the world stutters during exploration | Chunk generation, storage or CPU load is exceeding the machine’s capacity | Check server logs and system utilization, reduce simultaneous long-distance travel during testing, and move to a stronger host if the bottleneck persists |
| The server starts after an update but an existing world will not load | Pack or mod changes are incompatible with that world | Stop immediately, restore the pre-update world and server files, and consult the release notes before attempting a migration |
Managed hosting or self-hosting?
| Choose managed hosting when… | Choose self-hosting when… |
|---|---|
| You want a panel-based installation and do not want to manage Java or port forwarding. | You already have a suitable always-on machine and are comfortable maintaining Java, Forge, firewall rules and backups. |
| Your group needs a public address quickly and you value provider support. | You need direct control over files, scripts, configurations and update timing. |
| You prefer provider-managed storage and scheduled backups. | You can provide redundant backups and accept responsibility for uptime and recovery. |
Neither route bypasses version discipline. A one-click panel can install the wrong similarly named pack, and a carefully configured home server can still fail if a launch script selects the wrong Java. Verify the edition, release, Forge build and client profile before opening the server to players.
Final pre-launch checklist
- Edition selected: original Cottage Witch or Cottage Witch: Recast.
- Minecraft version confirmed as 1.19.2.
- Forge selected; NeoForge not used for this pack.
- Java 17 installed and shown by the actual launch script.
- RAM chosen from the applicable player-count guidance, with headroom for the operating system.
- Exact server pack downloaded from the same release as the clients.
- First launch completed without missing libraries or mod errors.
- Firewall and gateway rules tested from outside the local network, if internet play is required.
- World, configuration and mod files backed up before inviting players.
- Every player has the same pack edition and release.
Once those checks pass, start with a small test group, watch the console and system utilization, and expand the player count gradually. This approach exposes Java, networking and memory problems before they can damage a long-running world.
