Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
To host Better MC [BMC6] successfully, install the exact BMC6 server pack that matches your clients, run it with enough memory, and expose the Minecraft port only after the server starts cleanly. The current CurseForge listing is for Minecraft 26.1.2 with NeoForge; its latest listed server pack is BMC6_ServerPack_v7, released October 14, 2026, and sized at 81.5 MB. Treat that revision as changeable: every player and the server must use the same Minecraft version, NeoForge build, and BMC6 pack revision.
Allocate at least 6 GB of server memory. For five or more players, the Better MC multiplayer guidance cites 8–10 GB. A practical machine profile is 16 GB of total system RAM, a four-core-class CPU or better, and at least 15 GB of SSD space, with additional room for world backups and logs.
What you need before installing BMC6
BMC6 is a modpack, not a single server plugin. The server loads NeoForge, the pack’s mods, configuration files, libraries and world data together. A client can connect only when those components are compatible. Having the right amount of RAM does not fix a wrong loader build or an incomplete server download.
Version and pack requirements
| Component | Current or recommended value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft | 26.1.2 on the current listing | The client and server must use the same game version. |
| Mod loader | NeoForge matching the selected BMC6 release | A different NeoForge build can prevent startup or joining. |
| BMC6 server files | BMC6_ServerPack_v7, 81.5 MB, listed October 14, 2026 | The revision determines the mods and configuration that must match on clients. |
| Java | 64-bit Java 17 in the general Better MC guidance | The included launch script is the final authority if this Minecraft release requires another runtime. |
| Server memory | 6 GB minimum; 8–10 GB for five or more players | Modded worlds need headroom for generation, entities and several connected players. |
| Total system memory | 16 GB recommended | The operating system and other services need memory outside the Java heap. |
| Storage | At least 15 GB on an SSD | World growth, logs, libraries and backups consume more than the initial archive. |
| Processor | Four-core-class CPU or better | World ticks and mod logic benefit from strong single-thread performance as well as additional cores. |
The BMC6 revision can change after this article’s current listing. Before every installation or upgrade, open the pack’s files page, record the selected Minecraft version, NeoForge version and BMC6 revision, and give that same record to every player.

Choose self-hosting or a managed Minecraft host
Both approaches can run Better MC when the environment supports NeoForge and supplies the required memory. Self-hosting gives you direct access to files and network settings. A managed host removes much of the operating-system and router work, but you must confirm that it accepts a custom NeoForge server pack rather than only offering a limited one-click catalog.
| Decision area | Self-hosted machine | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Install Java, extract the pack, configure the service, firewall and router. | Upload or select the server pack and use the host’s panel, subject to its NeoForge support. |
| Recurring cost | Uses an existing computer, electricity and an internet connection. | Monthly service fee; price and renewal terms vary by provider and plan. |
| File and configuration control | Full access to mods, configs, scripts, worlds and logs. | Usually available through a file manager or SFTP, but panel restrictions may apply. |
| Backups | You must schedule and verify your own copies. | Some plans provide automatic backups; check retention, restore controls and whether backups count against storage. |
| Port management | Open the host firewall and normally forward port 25565 on the router. | The provider generally supplies an address and port, so home-router forwarding is not required. |
| NeoForge support | You control the runtime and can follow the pack’s launch script. | Confirm NeoForge, custom server-pack uploads and the required Java version before paying. |
| Uptime | Depends on your power, network and maintenance schedule. | Datacenter power and networking are handled by the provider, within its service terms. |
| Upgrades | Stop the server, back up the world, replace files carefully and test. | The panel may simplify uploads, but you still need a matching client revision and a rollback copy. |
Self-host when control is the priority
Self-hosting suits an operator who can leave a machine online, troubleshoot Java and networking, and maintain backups. It is also the easiest route when you need to inspect logs, edit configuration files or install an exact pack revision that a panel does not list.

A managed service is useful when router access, public addressing, power continuity or routine maintenance is difficult. Ask support these questions before ordering:
- Does the service run NeoForge for Minecraft 26.1.2?
- Can you upload the complete BMC6 server pack rather than only a client manifest?
- Can the plan allocate at least 6 GB, and 8–10 GB for a five-player group?
- Is SSD storage at least 15 GB after the operating system and panel overhead?
- Are automatic backups available, how long are they retained, and can you download one?
- Can you change Java versions or use the runtime required by the pack’s startup script?
Match the versions before downloading
- Open the BMC6 files page in CurseForge.
- Choose the release your group intends to use, rather than automatically selecting the newest file on separate computers.
- Record its Minecraft version, NeoForge version and BMC6 revision. For the current listing, those are Minecraft 26.1.2, NeoForge and server pack v7.
- Send the record to players and tell them not to update their client independently.
- Recheck the record whenever someone reports a join error or whenever you change the server files.
Do not mix a newer client with an older server pack, or a pack built for another loader. If you deliberately remain on an older revision, every client must remain on that same revision until you schedule an upgrade.
Download the actual BMC6 server pack
Manual hosting requires the server-pack download under the BMC6 file’s Additional Files area. The normal main download is a launcher manifest intended for client installation; it is not the complete set of files required by a manually operated server.
- On the selected BMC6 file, open the additional-file or server-pack download.
- Confirm that the filename and revision correspond to the version record you made.
- Download the complete server archive. The current v7 listing is 81.5 MB.
- Create a dedicated directory such as
BMC6-Serveron the SSD. - Extract the archive directly into that directory. Avoid nesting the real files several folders deep, because launch scripts may expect to run from the pack’s root.
A client manifest in the server directory is a common cause of misleading errors: the process may start without the expected mods, or a client may fail the mod-list handshake. If the archive does not contain the startup files, libraries and server configuration expected by the pack, download the server pack again rather than trying to convert the client manifest.

Install Java and launch the server
Verify a 64-bit Java runtime
The general Better MC multiplayer and requirements guidance specifies 64-bit Java 17. Install the 64-bit build appropriate for your operating system, then open a terminal or command prompt and run:
java -version
Confirm that the command reports a 64-bit Java 17 runtime, unless the BMC6 v7 launch script explicitly requires another version for Minecraft 26.1.2. Do not assume that the Java version used by your launcher is automatically available to a standalone server process; the server command uses the runtime found on the host’s path or named in its script.
Run the included startup script
- Open the extracted
BMC6-Serverdirectory. - Run the startup script supplied in the archive using the operating system’s normal method.
- Read the console output. On the first run, the server normally creates files and stops or pauses for the Minecraft EULA.
- Open the generated
eula.txt, change only the EULA setting required by Mojang’s terms to accept it, save the file, and close it. - Start the script again and wait for the console to report that the server is ready for connections. The first launch can take longer while libraries and world files are created.
- Stop the process through the server console’s normal stop command. Do not close the window or kill the process while the world is being saved.
- Start it once more and check that the same world and configuration load without errors.
The included script should be treated as the authority for the Java executable, memory flags and any generated setup steps. If it names a different runtime than Java 17, follow that requirement for this pack revision and install the matching 64-bit runtime.
Set the Java heap without starving the machine
Use 6 GB as the allocation floor. For five or more simultaneous players, use the cited 8–10 GB range when the machine has enough total memory. Many launch scripts express heap settings with -Xms and -Xmx; edit the values in the supplied script only after making a backup, and preserve its other arguments.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assign all physical RAM to Java. With the recommended 16 GB system profile, allocating 6–8 GB to Minecraft leaves memory for the operating system, file cache, Java overhead, backups and monitoring. If the host starts swapping, becomes unresponsive or terminates Java for lack of memory, reduce competing services or move the server to a larger machine rather than simply increasing the heap.
Prepare storage, backups and maintenance
The stated 15 GB SSD requirement covers a starting installation, not an unlimited world. Exploration creates region files; mods add logs and configuration; crash reports and backups accumulate. Keep the server, world and backups on SSD storage with free space available.

- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
A practical directory plan
- Keep the live server in its own directory so pack files are not mixed with unrelated worlds.
- Store backups outside the live world directory. A backup inside the same directory can be lost with the original disk.
- Retain at least one recent backup before every modpack or loader update.
- Copy important backups to another physical disk or a separate machine.
- Monitor free space, especially after a group explores new dimensions or generates large areas.
If you are buying storage specifically for this use, a 500 GB SSD leaves substantially more room for multiple world snapshots, logs and future pack revisions than the 15 GB minimum. Check that the drive’s NVMe or SATA interface is compatible with the host; the cited Better MC guidance does not prescribe either interface or a particular model.
Upgrade without corrupting the world
- Announce a maintenance window and stop players from logging in.
- Stop the server cleanly and make a dated copy of the world, configuration and current server directory.
- Download the new server pack and note its Minecraft, NeoForge and BMC6 versions.
- Use a new staging directory when possible. Do not overwrite a known-good installation until the new one starts.
- Apply only the configuration changes you understand; do not blindly carry old files into a new pack.
- Start the staged server, inspect the console and test with a client on the identical revision.
- Keep the old directory until the group has played successfully and the new backup has been verified.
Configure network access
Test locally first
Before changing the router, join from the same machine or local network using the server’s local address. This separates mod, Java and world problems from internet routing problems. The server must be running and fully ready before a client attempts to connect.
Open the host firewall
Allow the Java server process or its configured Minecraft port through the operating system firewall. NeoForged documentation identifies 25565 as Minecraft’s default port; the pack or your server properties may use another value, so verify the actual setting before creating a rule.
Forward the router port for internet players
- Give the server computer a stable local address, using a DHCP reservation or an equivalent method.
- In the router’s port-forwarding page, forward the configured Minecraft TCP port, normally 25565, to that local address.
- Apply the rule and confirm that the host firewall allows the same port.
- Give friends your public address and port, not the private 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x address used inside your home.
- Test from a network outside your home, such as a mobile connection. Testing from inside can be misleading when the router lacks NAT loopback.
Port forwarding exposes the game service, not your administration tools. Do not forward remote-desktop, file-sharing or panel ports merely to make Minecraft work. Keep the server software updated, use a separate operating-system account where practical, and review firewall rules when you retire the server.
When port forwarding does not work
- Friends see a timeout: confirm the server is running, the configured port, host firewall rule, router destination and your public address.
- Local players connect but internet players cannot: the modpack is probably working; investigate router forwarding, carrier-grade NAT, double NAT or an ISP block.
- The public address changes: update the address you give players or use a dynamic-DNS service that you control.
- The host is behind two routers: forward through both devices or place the downstream router in the correct bridge or DMZ arrangement according to its documentation.
Help players install a matching client
- Tell every player the exact Minecraft, NeoForge and BMC6 revision from the server’s version record.
- Have them install that BMC6 client release through their launcher.
- Ask them to avoid adding, removing or updating individual mods unless the server operator has approved the change.
- Give them the server address only after the server has completed startup.
- When the pack is upgraded, have everyone close the game, update to the same release and rejoin only after the server upgrade is verified.
A client that launches successfully can still fail to join if its mod list, loader build or configuration differs. The launcher’s ability to start the game is not proof that it matches the server.
Troubleshoot BMC6 connection and startup failures in order
Change one variable at a time and keep the console log from the first failure. Work through this order; it prevents a network symptom from distracting you from a version mismatch.

1. Check Minecraft versions
Compare the client’s displayed Minecraft version with the server pack’s version record. The current BMC6 listing is 26.1.2. A client on another game version must be changed before any further network diagnosis.
2. Check NeoForge builds
Confirm that both sides use the NeoForge version required by the selected BMC6 release. Similar-looking loader versions are not interchangeable. Reinstall the exact client profile or restore the matching server directory if the loader was changed manually.
3. Check the BMC6 revision
Ensure that every player selected the same BMC6 release as the server. Do not pair the current v7 server pack with an older client profile, or a newer client with v7, unless the pack publisher explicitly states compatibility.
4. Check Java
Run java -version in the same environment used by the startup script. A 32-bit runtime, missing executable or unsupported Java version can stop the server before a port is ever opened. Follow the runtime named in the script when it differs from the general Java 17 guidance.

5. Check server-pack completeness
If expected libraries, scripts or configuration files are missing, compare the directory with a fresh extraction of the server-pack download. Replace the incomplete copy; do not substitute the normal client manifest.
6. Check memory and storage
Look for out-of-memory messages, operating-system swapping, abrupt Java termination and a nearly full SSD. Restore at least 6 GB of heap, move toward 8–10 GB for five or more players when total RAM allows, and keep free SSD capacity for world growth.
7. Check firewall and reachability
Only after the server starts cleanly should you test the configured port locally, then from outside the home network. Verify the actual port in server properties rather than assuming 25565 if it has been changed.
Operating checklist for a stable server
- Keep a written version record for Minecraft, NeoForge and BMC6.
- Start the server before players connect and wait for the ready message.
- Stop it cleanly before maintenance, backups or operating-system restarts.
- Take a dated world backup before every upgrade.
- Watch Java memory, CPU load, SSD free space and log growth.
- Test a backup restore occasionally instead of assuming that a copied file is usable.
- Tell players about maintenance windows and do not let them update the pack independently.
- Review firewall and router rules when the server address, port or machine changes.
Bottom line
Download the BMC6 server pack, not the client manifest; match Minecraft 26.1.2, NeoForge and the exact BMC6 revision on every device; allocate at least 6 GB of server memory; and use 8–10 GB for a group of five or more when your total system RAM permits it. Give the installation at least 15 GB of SSD space, leave memory for the operating system, and open or forward the configured Minecraft port only after the server runs locally. Those checks address the most common causes of failed BMC6 installations and join attempts.
