Use YouTube’s own feedback and history controls first: select Not interested for individual spoiler videos, choose Don’t recommend channel for repeat sources, and delete or pause watch and search history that is training your feed. If seeing spoiler imagery is the main risk, a browser extension can hide or blur thumbnails, remove recommendation areas, or filter specified spoiler words and channels. Those extensions are optional third-party tools, and their store descriptions are not guarantees that every spoiler will be detected.
What you can hide—and what you cannot
YouTube does not offer one universal “spoiler mode” switch. Recommendations appear in several places, including Home, Up next, Shorts, end screens, and some channel or destination pages. Each surface can use different signals, so removing one recommendation does not automatically remove every related thumbnail or suggested video. YouTube describes recommendation controls and surfaces here: YouTube recommendations.
There are three practical layers of protection:
- Feedback controls: tell YouTube that a particular recommendation, or an entire channel, is unwanted.
- History controls: remove or stop the watch and search signals that shape future recommendations.
- Browser filtering: use a desktop browser extension to conceal thumbnails, remove recommendation areas, or match spoiler keywords and channels.
The first two layers are available through YouTube itself and work on supported devices. Browser extensions affect only the browser where they are installed; they do not automatically change YouTube’s mobile, television, streaming-device, or console apps.
Start with YouTube’s built-in feedback
Mark one video Not interested
When a spoiler video appears on Home or another supported recommendation surface, open the item’s More menu (the three-dot menu) and select Not interested. YouTube records that choice as feedback for future recommendations. The control is designed to tune suggestions, not to guarantee a topic-wide block, so a different channel or differently worded title can still appear. Use this option for isolated videos: a review that reveals a boss, a thumbnail showing a late-game character, or a reaction video you do not want in the feed. Apply it as soon as the item appears, before opening the video, so the watch itself does not become another recommendation signal.
Block a repeat source with Don’t recommend channel
If several spoiler posts come from the same channel, open the item’s More menu and choose Don’t recommend channel when that option is shown. This is channel-level feedback on supported surfaces. It is not a complete account-wide block: the channel could still be found through direct search, subscriptions, links, comments, or surfaces where the control is unavailable.
Use channel feedback narrowly. Blocking a news or guide channel can also remove its spoiler-free uploads, and YouTube may still suggest similar videos from other channels. If you later want that source back in recommendations, review your feedback settings in the Google Account or YouTube controls described in the linked help page.

Clean the history that is feeding spoiler recommendations
Delete game-related watch history
Watching several videos about a game can teach Home and Up next that you want more of that game—even when you were researching one narrow question and wanted to avoid story details. YouTube says deleted watch-history entries are not used for future recommendations. In YouTube, open your profile picture, choose Settings, then Manage all history (the exact label can vary by device), locate the game-related videos, and delete them. The current history guidance is at YouTube watch-history controls.
Deleting history also removes your record of those views. If you need a clean feed but want to retain a record for personal reference, note the titles elsewhere before deleting them; YouTube’s control does not provide a separate “do not use for recommendations but keep visible” setting for an individual watch entry.

Delete searches that reveal the game
Searches are another recommendation signal. YouTube states that deleted searches stop influencing recommendations. In Manage all history, remove searches for the game, character, mission, or ending you were investigating. The search-history help page is YouTube search-history controls.
For a one-time lookup, use YouTube’s Incognito mode where available. Searches made in YouTube Incognito are not saved to search history. Incognito does not make a video itself spoiler-free: titles and thumbnails can still contain reveals, so combine it with a thumbnail-hiding method if you must browse safely.
Pause history during spoiler-sensitive research
Pause watch history before viewing walkthroughs, explanations, or search results that could contaminate your normal feed. YouTube says videos watched while history is paused will not appear in watch history. Return to the same control and resume history when the temporary session ends if you want ordinary history-based personalization again. Pausing history reduces the signals used for recommendations, but it also means those videos will not be available in your normal watch-history list.
History settings are account controls, so changing them can affect every device signed in to that Google Account. They also do not promise to remove every suggestion: YouTube may use other Google Account activity, current searches, subscriptions, and contextual signals for recommendations, search results, notifications, and suggested videos.
Choose a browser extension for thumbnail or title masking
Extensions are useful when the image itself is the problem. The following options are store-listed tools; feature descriptions, permissions, compatibility, versions, and availability can change. Review the current listing and requested permissions before installing, and do not treat a listing as independent testing.

1. Pick the amount of YouTube you want to keep
- Choose thumbnail hiding if you still want to browse channels and recommendations but do not want images visible.
- Choose broad recommendation removal if Home, the sidebar, Shorts, and end screens are the main exposure points.
- Choose keyword or channel filtering if you need a targeted block for one game and still want unrelated recommendations.
2. Verify the current store listing
Open the official Chrome Web Store or Mozilla Add-ons page linked above, check that the publisher, supported browser, update date, permissions, and privacy information match your expectations, and read the current feature description. Store pages are volatile: an extension can change hands, lose compatibility, or alter its permission set after this article is published.
3. Configure conservative rules first
For a keyword filter, begin with the exact game title and the names of major characters, bosses, locations, and endings that you already know. Add alternate spellings and common abbreviations only when needed. Overly broad words such as “final” or “secret” can hide harmless videos from other games. For channel rules, add channels that repeatedly publish reveals rather than blocking every guide channel at once.
4. Test without opening a video
Open YouTube in a new tab and inspect Home, search results, a channel page, Up next, Shorts, and an end-screen area. Confirm that cards are masked or removed before clicking. If a title or image still appears, add the missing keyword, disable that surface in the extension if available, or use YouTube’s Not interested control as an additional signal.
5. Keep a recovery path
Record which extension and rules you enabled. If YouTube navigation becomes unusable, disable the extension from the browser’s extensions manager, narrow the rule list, or turn off only the surface you need. Removing an extension does not restore deleted YouTube history, so make history changes deliberately.

Device-by-device limits
Desktop browsers
Chrome and Firefox can run the store-listed extensions above. Their filtering applies to pages rendered in that browser profile. A second browser, a private window without extension access, or a different computer may show ordinary thumbnails unless the extension is installed and enabled there too.
Android and iPhone/iPad apps
YouTube’s mobile apps support feedback and history controls described in YouTube Help, but desktop browser extensions do not automatically run inside the apps. Use Not interested, Don’t recommend channel, deletion, or pausing from the account controls. If you need image masking on a phone, check whether your browser and the current extension support mobile installation; do not assume a desktop listing works in a mobile app.
Smart TVs, streaming devices, and consoles
These apps generally provide YouTube’s own recommendation and history actions where the interface exposes them, but they cannot use a Chrome or Firefox extension. Apply account-level feedback and history changes on a phone or computer signed in to the same account, then avoid opening unfiltered search results on the TV or console. YouTube’s help pages include device-specific instructions for supported controls: YouTube feedback options.
Use a decision framework instead of one oversized block

Why a spoiler can still appear
The card is not a recommendation surface
Not interested and Don’t recommend channel are recommendation feedback controls. A direct search result, a subscribed-channel upload, a shared link, a comment link, or a page reached from outside YouTube may not be governed by that feedback. Treat those entry points as unfiltered unless your browser masking or keyword rules cover them.
The title avoided your blocked term
Keyword rules depend on the words the extension can read. Creators can use abbreviations, symbols, deliberate misspellings, or a thumbnail that reveals the event without naming it. Add known variants, but recognize that text matching cannot reliably interpret every image or euphemism.

You changed history but not the current page
Deleting a watch or search entry changes future recommendation signals; it does not guarantee that an already loaded page instantly redraws every card. Refresh YouTube after changing history and apply Not interested to any remaining unwanted card.
You are using another device or account
An extension is browser-local, while feedback and history are account-based. Confirm that the browser profile and YouTube account are the ones you normally use. A television profile, signed-out session, or family member’s account can have a different feed and different controls.
A YouTube layout change broke the extension
Extensions rely on the page structure supplied by YouTube. If masking stops after an interface update, check the store listing for a recent update, review its settings, and temporarily rely on YouTube feedback and history controls. Do not install an unverified copy simply because it promises a faster fix.

- Install only from the official Chrome Web Store or Mozilla Add-ons URL, not from a download mirror.
- Read the permissions. A thumbnail filter may need access to YouTube pages; broad access to unrelated sites deserves extra scrutiny.
- Check the publisher name, update history, privacy policy, and user reports at installation time.
- Disable or remove the extension if it injects unexpected ads, redirects searches, requests unrelated permissions, or stops receiving updates.
- Keep a separate browser profile for spoiler-sensitive browsing if you do not want the extension affecting work or other accounts.
A repeatable spoiler-safe workflow
- Before starting a new game, add its title and known character or boss names to your keyword filter, or enable thumbnail masking.
- On Home, Up next, Shorts, or a channel page, use More → Not interested for every unwanted recommendation and More → Don’t recommend channel for repeat sources.
- When researching the game, pause watch and search history or use YouTube Incognito for searches that should not shape your normal feed.
- After the session, resume history if you want personalization, then delete any game-related entries that were saved before the pause.
- On a TV or console, avoid opening direct search results until the account-level cleanup is complete; those apps cannot run desktop extensions.
- If a reveal slips through, note the exact title, channel, and surface, update your keyword or channel rule, and refresh the page rather than opening the video to investigate.
Bottom line
The most reliable starting point is YouTube’s own controls: reject individual cards, suppress repeat channels, and remove or pause the watch and search history that is driving unwanted personalization. Add a browser extension only for the specific gap you still have—visual thumbnail masking, broad removal of recommendation areas, or matching spoiler words and channels. Because recommendations use multiple surfaces and extensions are third-party, combine layers, verify each device you use, and assume that a direct link or an unrecognized spoiler can still bypass a filter.
