The safest way to hide cables behind a wall-mounted TV is to use a purpose-built in-wall TV power kit on a suitable wall, or a surface raceway when you do not want to cut the wall. Never push the TV’s ordinary power cord or an extension cord through drywall. If you can place the television near an existing receptacle, you may also hide the cord behind the screen or furniture without routing it inside the wall.

Choose the cable-hiding method before drilling

Wall-mounted televisions usually have several connections: power, HDMI, antenna or coaxial cable, Ethernet, optical audio, USB, and sometimes speaker or control wiring. The best method depends on the wall, the cables, and how permanent you want the installation to be.

Method Best fit What you must accept
Purpose-built in-wall power relocation kit A suitable framed wall where you want both power and low-voltage cables concealed You must make wall openings, follow the kit’s instructions, verify wall compatibility and cable capacity, and satisfy local electrical requirements
Surface raceway or cord cover You want to avoid cutting drywall, or the wall is unsuitable for an in-wall route A channel remains visible, although a paintable model can blend with the wall; confirm whether the product supports power as well as low-voltage cables
Existing outlet and furniture layout The TV can be positioned close to a receptacle or a console can conceal the connection TV placement may be limited, and this does not make a cord routed through the wall acceptable
New or relocated receptacle You want a permanent outlet directly behind or beside the TV This is electrical installation work subject to local rules; use a qualified electrician when required

Do not choose an in-wall route merely because it looks cleaner. First identify the wall construction, the location of studs and services, the number and length of cables, and the installation method permitted by the product listing and local authority.

Why an ordinary TV power cord must not go inside the wall

A television’s detachable power lead is a flexible cord, not automatically an in-wall wiring method. NFPA-hosted material reproducing NEC 400.12 lists prohibited uses for flexible cords and power-supply cords, including:

“Where run through holes in walls, structural ceilings, suspended ceilings, dropped ceilings, or floors”

The same provision also addresses cords concealed by walls. That means an extension cord or the power cord supplied with the TV is not a substitute for an in-wall power kit.

The quoted wording appears in NFPA 70-2023 committee material. The NFPA code-development page identifies the 2026 edition as the current NFPA 70 edition as accessed on October 13, 2026. Local jurisdictions adopt electrical-code editions independently and may amend them, so do not assume that one edition or one interpretation applies everywhere. Check the rules in your location before opening a wall or adding an outlet.

The safe practical wording is simple: do not run the TV’s ordinary power cord or an extension cord through the wall. Use a purpose-built in-wall power kit installed according to its instructions, or keep the cord outside the wall in a surface raceway.

Inspect the wall and plan the route

Identify the wall construction

  • Framed drywall: Often the easiest type for a listed in-wall kit, provided the cavity is clear and the kit is approved for that construction.
  • Brick, concrete, or block: Cutting a concealed vertical channel may require specialized tools and can affect the structure or finishes. A surface raceway is usually less disruptive.
  • Plaster or lath: Openings can chip or crack, so a raceway may be preferable unless you have the appropriate repair skills.
  • Exterior or insulated walls: Insulation, vapor-control layers, and structural members can limit the available cavity and require additional precautions.

Locate studs, pipes, ducts, electrical cables, insulation, and fire-stopping before cutting. A stud finder can help, but it cannot guarantee that a cavity is clear. Never drill where you cannot establish a safe route. If the wall’s construction or contents are uncertain, stop and obtain an on-site assessment.

Mark the TV and equipment positions

  1. Mount or temporarily hold the bracket at the desired viewing height, following the bracket maker’s spacing and load instructions.
  2. Mark the TV’s cable-entry area and the lower point where cables will emerge near an outlet, receiver, game console, or streaming device.
  3. Account for the bracket’s tilt and extension. A cable that is just long enough with the TV flat against the wall may become tight when the screen is pulled forward.
  4. Leave a service loop at each end so a connector can be unplugged without removing the television.

Keep signal cables away from sharp edges and avoid tight bends, especially at HDMI and optical connectors. Measure the actual route rather than relying on the vertical distance between the two openings; a path around a stud or through a side channel may require additional length.

Use a purpose-built in-wall TV power kit

An in-wall power relocation kit is designed as a system for a wall-mounted television. Depending on the model, it may provide a recessed power connection, a connection to an existing receptacle, and a route for low-voltage cables such as HDMI or coaxial cable. The kit—not the TV’s ordinary cord—is the component intended for the concealed power path.

SANUS describes its VuePoint FPACM1 as an in-wall cable kit for wall-mounted TVs that routes AV and power and provides an installation manual. Legrand describes its Wiremold CMK70 as a pre-wired TV power and cable kit. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent validation of every wall, jurisdiction, or installation.

Verify the kit before opening the wall

  • Confirm that the kit is listed or certified for the intended use and wall construction.
  • Read the complete installation manual, including the permitted opening size, spacing, orientation, and connection method.
  • Check exactly which cables can pass through the low-voltage section and how many will fit.
  • Verify the harness length and the length of any included power lead against your planned route.
  • Confirm whether the kit requires an existing receptacle, a dedicated circuit, or work at the electrical panel.
  • Check whether local rules require a permit, inspection, or licensed electrical work.

Typical installation sequence

  1. De-energize the work area. Turn off the relevant circuit at the breaker before opening any wall. Verify that the receptacle and surrounding wiring are de-energized with an appropriate tester.
  2. Transfer the template. Use the kit’s supplied template or dimensions to mark the upper and lower openings. Do not substitute a hole size from another product.
  3. Check the cavity again. Make a small inspection opening if the instructions permit, and look for studs, cables, pipes, insulation, or fire blocking before cutting the final openings.
  4. Cut only the specified openings. Use the recommended tool and keep the edges clean so the plates seat properly. Do not enlarge an opening casually to make a connector fit.
  5. Install the power components. Follow the kit’s wiring diagram exactly. If the instructions require connections to building wiring or a new receptacle and you are not qualified to perform that work, stop and call an electrician.
  6. Route low-voltage cables. Feed HDMI, coaxial, Ethernet, or other permitted cables through the designated passage. Protect them from fasteners and avoid crushing them behind the bracket.
  7. Secure and test. Install the plates, connect the TV and equipment, restore power, and test every input before tightening the television fully against the mount.

Do not mix components from unrelated kits or bypass a kit’s strain relief, connector, or cover. If the kit does not accommodate a particular cable, keep that cable outside the wall in its own raceway.

Install a surface raceway when you want to avoid wall cuts

A surface raceway keeps the route on top of the wall. It is useful for renters, finished masonry, walls containing unknown obstructions, and anyone who wants a reversible installation. The channel is visible, but a low-profile, paintable cover can be much less noticeable than loose cables.

Legrand identifies its Wiremold CMK70 as an on-wall product and describes a pre-wired kit with low-voltage routing that can include HDMI, a 54-inch harness, a 6-foot power cord, a hole saw, and fish tape. Because the product is described as on-wall, do not classify it as a purely concealed in-wall system. Confirm the exact package contents and permitted configuration before purchase.

Raceway installation steps

  1. Lay out the route. Plan the shortest practical path from the TV to the outlet or equipment. Avoid door hinges, heat sources, and locations where furniture will repeatedly press on the channel.
  2. Choose the channel size. Count the cables and check the manufacturer’s fill guidance. A channel that barely closes can pinch connectors and make future changes difficult.
  3. Clean and prepare the surface. Dust and grease reduce adhesive performance. For painted walls, test the adhesive or mounting method in an inconspicuous area.
  4. Mount the base. Use the supplied adhesive, screws, or both as directed. On masonry or textured surfaces, mechanical fasteners may be more reliable than adhesive alone.
  5. Separate power and signal paths as required. Follow the raceway’s instructions for power and low-voltage conductors. Never assume that any hollow plastic cover is approved for a power cord.
  6. Install the cover and finish it. Snap or screw the cover in place without forcing it over connectors. If the model is paintable, use the preparation and paint recommended by its instructions.
  7. Leave service access. Do not permanently seal a connection that may need to be replaced. Test the TV and each source before concealing the final section.

Hide cables without routing them through the wall

Place the TV near an existing receptacle

If the outlet is directly behind the screen, the TV may conceal most of its cord without any wall modification. A low-profile plug can help when the receptacle is close to the bracket, but verify that the plug and cord are not crushed by the mount. Keep the connection accessible enough to disconnect safely.

Use furniture to manage the lower section

A console, cabinet, or equipment shelf can hide the point where cables descend from the television. Bundle only compatible low-voltage cables together, leave bend room at connectors, and provide ventilation for receivers, game consoles, and power adapters. Furniture should disguise the route, not trap heat or bear the weight of a hanging cable.

Route along trim or a corner

A raceway following the baseboard, door trim, or inside corner is often less conspicuous than a vertical line in the middle of the wall. Do not staple or nail through a power cord. Use a listed cover or clips that cannot damage the insulation.

Plan cable types and lengths

Cable Planning concern Good practice
HDMI Connector size and bend radius can make a short route unusable once the TV is tilted Measure with the bracket extended and leave a service loop; choose a cable rated for the signal format you intend to use
Coaxial antenna or cable Sharp bends and crushed sections can degrade the signal Use gradual bends and avoid compressing the cable behind the mount
Ethernet Future equipment may need a different location or length Leave spare length at the equipment end and label both ends before concealment
Optical audio The connector and fiber can be damaged by tight bends Follow the cable maker’s minimum bend guidance and avoid pinching the jacket
TV power Ordinary flexible cords are not for concealed in-wall routing Keep it outside the wall in a suitable raceway or use a purpose-built in-wall power kit

Label cables before closing a raceway or fastening the TV. A simple label such as “receiver HDMI,” “console,” or “antenna” prevents unnecessary removal later. If you expect to add devices, install an accessible pull point or choose a larger raceway rather than forcing extra cables into a finished route.

When a new or relocated outlet is the right answer

A receptacle placed behind the television can eliminate a visible power lead, but moving or adding one is separate electrical work. It may involve circuit loading, box placement, grounding, cable protection, fire stopping, permits, and inspection requirements that vary by jurisdiction.

Use a qualified electrician when the work involves building wiring, a new box, an unfamiliar circuit, or any uncertainty about code compliance. Do not splice wires inside an inaccessible wall cavity, extend a circuit by improvisation, or bury a power strip. The available product descriptions do not establish permit rules for your location, so ask the local authority having jurisdiction or the electrician performing the work.

Final safety and quality checklist

  • The TV is supported by a mount rated for its size and weight, installed into the appropriate structure.
  • The ordinary TV power cord and extension cords remain outside the wall.
  • Any concealed power route uses a purpose-built kit installed exactly as instructed.
  • The wall cavity was checked for studs, pipes, ducts, wiring, insulation, and fire-stopping before cutting.
  • Low-voltage cables are permitted by the kit or raceway and are not crushed, sharply bent, or pulled tight.
  • Connections remain accessible enough for service, and cables are labeled.
  • Power is off while electrical work is performed, and damaged wiring is not re-energized.
  • Local electrical requirements have been checked, with a qualified electrician used for work beyond your competence.
  • Every TV input, audio connection, network link, and power function was tested before the final cover or bracket adjustment.

Which method should you use?

Choose an in-wall power relocation kit when the wall is suitable, you accept cutting openings, and you want the cleanest concealed route. Choose a surface raceway when avoiding drywall damage, working on masonry or an uncertain wall, or preserving easy access matters more than making the cables completely invisible. If an existing outlet or furniture can hide the cord, that is the least invasive option. If you need a new receptacle, treat it as electrical installation work rather than a cable-management project.
