Google Photos offers three different controls: Show less or Blocked hides a person from featured Memories, Remove results takes selected items out of a face group without deleting the originals, and switching off Face Groups deletes all face groups, face models and created labels for the account. Choose the narrowest option that matches your goal.
Choose the control that matches what you want
“Hide a face” and “remove a face group” are not the same operation. Google separates control of the Memories carousel from correction of a particular group and from deletion of all face-group data. The right choice depends on whether you want to change what appears in Memories, correct Google’s classification, or stop the face-group feature from maintaining data at all.
| Goal | Google Photos control | Scope | What happens to original photos and videos | Can you undo it? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stop a person appearing in featured Memories | Hide faces: Show less | Memories about that person | They remain in your Google Photos library | Yes, remove the person from Show less |
| Exclude a person completely from featured Memories | Hide faces: Blocked | The person, including group-photo Memories | They remain in your Google Photos library | Yes, remove the person from Blocked |
| Correct one face group | More > Remove results | Only the photos or videos you select in that group | The selected items stay in your library | The documented workflow does not describe restoring removed results automatically |
| Erase every face group and its associated data | Turn Face Groups off | All face groups, face models and created face labels for the account | Your media library is not described as being deleted by this setting | Google does not say that turning the feature back on restores previously deleted face-group data |
In practical terms, hiding is a presentation control, removing results is a classification correction, and turning off Face Groups is an account-wide data deletion choice. None of those should be confused with deleting a photo from the main library.
Hide someone from the featured Memories carousel
Use Hide faces when the problem is that a person keeps appearing in Google Photos Memories. This setting is specifically for the featured Memories carousel; it is not a command to erase the person’s photos from your library. The images remain searchable and viewable in the normal library unless you separately delete them.

On a computer
- Open Google Photos in a browser.
- Open Settings.
- Scroll to the Memories section.
- Select Hide faces.
- Choose the person under either Show less or Blocked.
- Save the selection when prompted.
The setting is located in Google Photos settings rather than in the face-group page. If you are already looking at a person’s group, go back to settings to control Memories appearances.
On Android
- Open the Google Photos app.
- Open Photos settings.
- Tap Preferences, then Memories.
- Tap Hide faces.
- Select the faces you want to control and tap Done.
Google’s Android instructions use the Preferences and Memories labels. App versions and account configurations can display slightly different wording, so look for the Memories section if a menu is not in exactly the same position.
Decide between Show less and Blocked
Show less suppresses Memories about that person, but the person can still appear in a Memory that contains a group photo. It is the less aggressive choice when you want fewer reminders without excluding every appearance. For example, a solo Memory centered on that person may be suppressed while a group Memory containing several people can still include their face.

Blocked excludes the person from Memories, including group photos with other people. Google says a blocked face is removed from People & pets while blocked; unhiding restores it there. Choose Blocked when the requirement is that the person not be surfaced in any featured Memory, rather than merely reducing the number of dedicated Memories.
Face hiding may not work perfectly in every photo, so an occasional appearance does not necessarily mean the setting failed. Google’s wording describes the intended Memories behavior, not a guarantee that every image will be recognized identically.
Undo a hidden face
Return to Hide faces, find the person in Show less or Blocked, and choose Remove beside the face. That reverses the hide choice. It does not delete any image or video, and unhiding a blocked face restores it to People & pets according to Google’s instructions.
Remove selected photos or videos from one face group
If Google has placed the wrong items in a person’s group, remove those results instead of hiding the person from Memories. This changes group membership only. Google’s documented wording is explicit: “If you remove an item from a group, it won’t delete the photo or video from your Google Photos library.”

Desktop procedure
- Open
photos.google.com/people. - Choose the face group that contains the incorrect items.
- Open More and select Remove results.
- Select the photos or videos that should no longer belong to that group.
- Click Remove and confirm.
The selected files remain available in the main Google Photos library. You are correcting the group’s results, not deleting the underlying media. Removing a result also does not mean that every other copy, similar image or future grouping decision will be changed; the documented action applies to the items you select in that group.

Correct a person label from a photo’s Info panel
Google also documents a separate correction route for a mislabeled image: open the photo, view its Info panel, and change the person labels shown there. This is different from both Hide faces and turning off Face Groups. Use it when the image itself has the wrong person label rather than when you want to suppress a person in Memories.
Think of the Info-panel action as an image-level correction, while Remove results is a group-results correction. Neither action is the same as deleting the complete face-group system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDelete all face groups and face-group data
Switching off Face Groups is the broadest action. Google says it deletes the account’s face groups, the face models used to create them and the face labels you created. It is not a single-person hide control. If several people are organized in People & pets, the setting applies to the complete collection.
On a computer
- Open
photos.google.com/settings. - Expand Group similar faces.
- Turn Face Groups off.
- Confirm the change if Google Photos asks you to do so.
On Android
Google’s help documentation lists more than one Android route, because the labels can vary by version and account. Look in Google Photos settings > Privacy. Google also lists Preferences > Group similar faces as a route to the same setting. Open the matching section, turn Face Groups off and confirm.
If neither path appears, check that you are changing settings in the intended Google account and that the app is showing its current settings categories. Google warns that Face Groups is not available in some geographic regions, domains or account types, so a missing control is not always caused by a navigation mistake.
Understand the consequence before switching it off
- All face groups are deleted, not just one person’s group.
- The numerical face models used to estimate similarity are deleted.
- Created face labels are deleted.
- The setting is broader than hiding a face from Memories or removing a few group results.
- Google does not describe turning Face Groups on again as restoring the data that was deleted.
Your ordinary photo and video library is not described as being deleted by this setting. Nevertheless, the face-group collection itself is removed, so names, group organization and the models used for similarity are no longer retained under the feature. If you later enable Face Groups, Google does not promise that the former groups, labels or models will reappear.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If your only objective is to stop one person appearing in Memories, use Hide faces instead. Turning off Face Groups for that situation discards considerably more data than necessary.
What Face Groups stores and how Google describes it
When Face Groups is enabled, Google says it detects faces in your photos, creates numerical face models to estimate similarity and groups faces that are likely to match. Google’s help text says that enabling the feature means you allow models of faces appearing in your photos to be made. The models are used to estimate similarity between detected faces; they are not the same thing as the original photographs.
Google says these models may be considered biometric data in some jurisdictions. That is a disclosure about possible legal classification, not a determination of how a particular country, state or territory classifies an individual user’s data. The statement also does not supply a universal legal conclusion for every account.

Retention and deletion events
Google’s retention information describes three relevant events:
- Turning off Face Groups deletes the groups, models and labels associated with the feature.
- Deleting an individual photo or video deletes face models derived specifically from that item.
- More than two years of inactivity in Google Photos results in deletion of Face Groups content.
The second point matters if you are trying to remove face-derived data from only one file: deleting that photo or video is described as deleting models derived specifically from that item, but it also removes the media itself. If you want to preserve the media, use Remove results or an Info-panel label correction instead.
The two-year period is a stated product-retention rule, not a statistic about how often people use face recognition. Google’s documentation does not provide a granular processing timeline for each deletion, so it should not be read as a promise that every related change appears instantly.
Why the menus may not match exactly
Google warns that Face Groups is unavailable in some geographic regions, domains or account types. The desktop and Android instructions also use different menu names, and labels can vary between app versions. Do not assume that every account will show an identical path or the same controls.
If Hide faces or Group similar faces is missing, the absence may reflect account or regional availability rather than a mistake in your taps. Google does not publish a complete eligibility list in the instructions covered here. The documented routes should therefore be treated as platform-specific guidance, not a guarantee that every user sees every menu.
Bulk deletion: what is and is not documented
A Google Photos Help Community answer dated July 5, 2026 says there is no bulk action to delete an entire face group or all photos associated with one person in one operation. Community posts are not guaranteed to be verified or current, so treat that statement as qualified context rather than a permanent product promise.
The official instructions document removing selected results from a group and disabling Face Groups altogether. They do not establish a complete list of every control that may exist in every account. If you need to preserve the media while correcting classification, remove selected results rather than attempting a library-wide deletion. If you need to remove all face-group data, use the documented Face Groups switch and understand that it applies to every face group, not just one.
Use this decision path when you are unsure
The person appears in Memories and you want fewer appearances
Open Hide faces and choose Show less. This targets featured Memories while leaving the person’s photos in your library. It is appropriate when you want to reduce reminders but can accept that a group Memory may still contain the person.
The person must not appear in any Memory, even in group photos
Choose Blocked in Hide faces. Google specifically says blocking covers group-photo Memories as well. Remember that a blocked face is removed from People & pets until you remove the block.

A few images are assigned to the wrong person
Open the face group, use More > Remove results, and select the incorrect items. If the problem is a label on one image, correct the person label in that photo’s Info panel. Both options preserve the underlying media.
You do not want Google Photos to maintain face groups at all
Turn off Face Groups in settings. This deletes all groups, models and created labels for the account, so it is not equivalent to hiding one person. Use it only when the account-wide consequence is acceptable.
You want the face-derived data for one photo gone
Google’s retention information says deleting an individual photo or video deletes face models derived specifically from that item. This route also deletes the photo or video itself, so it is not a substitute for Remove results when you need to keep the file.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing hiding with deletion: Hide faces changes Memories behavior; it does not remove library media.
- Expecting Show less to eliminate every appearance: Group photos can still include the person in Memories when Show less is selected.
- Using Blocked when you only meant to reduce reminders: Blocking also removes the face from People & pets until you unhide it.
- Assuming Remove results deletes the file: It changes face-group membership and leaves the photo or video in the library.
- Turning off Face Groups to solve a single-person problem: The setting deletes every face group, model and created label for the account.
- Assuming re-enabling restores deleted groups: Google does not say that previously deleted face-group data is restored when the feature is turned on again.
- Expecting identical desktop and Android menus: Google lists different paths and warns that labels vary by platform, version and account.
- Treating a community answer as an official guarantee: The July 5, 2026 Help Community statement about bulk deletion is qualified because community content may not be verified or current.
What each option changes
| Option | Primary purpose | Data scope | Library media | Reversibility described by Google |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Show less | Reduce Memories about a person | Featured Memories | Unchanged | Remove the face from Show less |
| Blocked | Exclude a person from Memories | Memories, including group photos | Unchanged | Remove the face from Blocked; People & pets is restored |
| Remove results | Correct selected group membership | Chosen items in one face group | Items remain in the library | No automatic restoration is described |
| Info-panel label change | Correct a label on a specific image | That photo’s person labels | Photo remains unless separately deleted | The documented instructions do not describe a separate recovery process |
| Face Groups off | Delete face-group data account-wide | All groups, models and created labels | Not described as deleted | Google does not promise restoration after re-enabling |
The practical distinction is scope. Hide faces changes what appears in featured Memories; Remove results changes selected membership in one group; turning off Face Groups removes the account-wide face-group collection and its associated models and labels. In the first two workflows, the documented action leaves the original photos and videos in the library.

Frequently asked questions
Can I hide someone without deleting their photos?
Yes. Use Hide faces and choose Show less or Blocked. Both controls affect featured Memories and leave the photos and videos in your Google Photos library.
What is the difference between Show less and Blocked?
Show less suppresses Memories about the person but can still allow the person to appear in group-photo Memories. Blocked excludes the person from Memories, including group photos, and removes the face from People & pets until unhidden.
Does Remove results delete a photo?
No. Google explicitly says removing an item from a face group does not delete the photo or video from the Google Photos library. It changes only that group’s results.
Can I delete just one person’s entire face group?
The official instructions document removing selected results from a group, not a guaranteed one-click deletion of one complete group. A July 5, 2026 community answer says there is no bulk action, but community content may not be verified or current. Turning off Face Groups is broader and deletes all groups, models and created labels for the account.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will turning Face Groups off delete my photos?
Google describes the setting as deleting face groups, face models and created labels. It does not describe the ordinary photo and video library as being deleted by that switch. Individual media deletion is a separate action.

Will my old groups come back if I turn Face Groups on again?
Google does not say that previously deleted face-group data is restored when the feature is enabled again. Do not treat turning the setting back on as a backup or recovery method.
What happens to face models when I delete one photo?
Google’s retention information says deleting an individual photo or video deletes face models derived specifically from that item. The media itself is also deleted, so use this only when deleting the file is acceptable.
Why can’t I find Hide faces or Group similar faces?
Google warns that Face Groups is unavailable in some geographic regions, domains or account types. Desktop and Android menus also differ, and labels can vary by app version. A missing menu may therefore reflect availability or interface differences rather than an incorrect step.
Does Google consider face models biometric data?
Google says face models may be considered biometric data in some jurisdictions. That is a product disclosure about possible legal classification, not a universal legal determination for every user or location.
How long does Google keep Face Groups data?
Google says turning off Face Groups deletes its groups, models and labels, and that more than two years of Google Photos inactivity results in deletion of Face Groups content. The documentation does not provide a detailed processing timeline for each deletion.
