To hide YouTube comments while watching on a desktop, use Full screen and scroll back up. YouTube’s documented desktop controls also include Theater mode, browser-window resizing and Miniplayer, but none provides a documented way to drag the comments panel to an arbitrary place. These controls change the player or hide surrounding page content; they do not freely reposition comments.
The right choice depends on whether you want a larger player, a video-only view, or a smaller floating player. The steps below separate viewer layout controls from creator settings that affect everyone who watches a video.
What YouTube lets you change on desktop
YouTube’s computer interface gives you control over the amount of page visible around the video, not an independent comments window. The player can occupy more or less of the browser window, and full-screen viewing can conceal the page until you scroll down. The comments column remains part of the video page rather than a panel that viewers can place anywhere.
This distinction matters because “move comments” can mean two different things:

- Change your viewing layout: enlarge the player, make the video fill the screen, or reduce it to a Miniplayer.
- Change commenting for a video you own: use YouTube Studio’s comment settings. That changes what other viewers can do; it is not a personal layout preference.
The official help pages reviewed do not document a viewer command for dragging comments from the right side, placing them below the player, or opening them as a free-floating panel. YouTube can change labels and page layout over time, so a control may look slightly different in your browser.
In practical terms, the controls work on the relationship between the video and the rest of the watch page. Full screen minimizes that relationship, Theater mode gives the player extra room while retaining the page, resizing changes the available viewport, and Miniplayer reduces the video so you can browse. None of these choices creates a second comments window or changes where YouTube stores the discussion.
Quickest way to hide comments: Full screen
Full screen is the most focused option when you want the video to occupy the display and the rest of the page out of sight. YouTube specifically documents that comments and recommendations can be revealed by scrolling down and hidden again by scrolling up.

- Open the video on YouTube in your desktop browser.
- Select the Full screen control at the bottom-right of the player.
- Watch in the expanded player. Page elements such as the comments area are no longer visible in the initial video view.
- When you need comments or the next-video list, scroll down. YouTube’s help says this exposes those sections while you remain in full-screen mode.
- Scroll back up to hide the page content and return to the video-only view.
YouTube’s exact wording is: “When in full-screen mode, you can scroll down to read comments and check which videos are up next. Scroll back up to hide everything except the video.” See YouTube Help’s full-screen instructions.
This makes Full screen useful for a temporary clean view rather than a permanent comment preference. You can still reveal the discussion when you choose, but it is not pinned beside the player. If you scroll down accidentally, scroll upward again to restore the video-only presentation.
What Full screen does not do
Full screen does not relocate comments to another part of the desktop. It temporarily changes how much of the page is visible. Scrolling down brings the page content into view; scrolling up removes it again. If you need the comments visible beside the video at all times, use the normal page or Theater mode instead.
Theater mode: enlarge the player without hiding the page
Theater mode is the middle ground between the standard watch page and Full screen. It gives the player more horizontal space while keeping the surrounding YouTube page available. This can make comments easier to reach than in Full screen, while reducing the visual prominence of the page around the video.

- Open the video on YouTube.
- Move the pointer over the player to reveal its controls.
- Select Theater mode in the player controls.
- Use the watch page normally; select the same control again when you want to return to the standard layout.
Theater mode is useful when you want a larger picture but still expect to read comments, inspect the title, or access other page controls without repeatedly leaving Full screen. It is not a comments-only setting, and it does not provide a handle for moving the comments column.
Think of Theater mode as a proportion change, not a separate comments view. The player receives more of the available page width, while the watch page remains the place where comments and other information live. If the comments column becomes harder to see at a particular window width, switching back to the normal layout or resizing the browser may provide a better balance.

Resize the browser window to change the layout
YouTube says the video player automatically adapts to the available space in your browser window. Resizing the window therefore changes the space available to the player and the rest of the page. This is a layout adjustment rather than a comment-specific command.
- Keep the video open in its normal YouTube tab.
- Resize the browser window by dragging one of its edges or corners.
- Watch how the player and page reflow as the available width changes.
- Stop when the balance between player size and surrounding content suits you.
A narrower window may give the player less room and cause page elements to stack differently; a wider window generally gives the player more room. Because this method changes the entire browser viewport, it can affect other tabs and applications if you work with a manually sized window. It is best when you want to keep the page available but need a different proportion between the player and comments.
Resizing is also the option to try when a particular screen arrangement makes the page feel crowded. It may cause YouTube to reflow the player and surrounding elements, but the result is automatic. You are influencing the available space, not selecting a destination for comments. A change in width can therefore alter the appearance without guaranteeing that comments will remain on a chosen side or at a chosen height.
Miniplayer: keep watching in a smaller player
Miniplayer displays the video in a smaller player while you browse YouTube. It is a viewing-size choice, not a way to move or hide the comments panel. Choose it when the video should continue playing while you look at other YouTube content.
- Start the video and reveal the player controls.
- Select Miniplayer.
- Continue browsing with the video in the smaller player.
- Return to the regular watch page when you need the full player and its comments area.
Miniplayer is the least suitable option if your goal is an unobstructed, large video. Its value is multitasking within YouTube, not comment management.
It also should not be confused with a detached comments panel. The smaller player lets you navigate elsewhere on YouTube while retaining the video; it does not carry the original comments column with it or provide controls for docking that column beside the mini player.
Which option should you use?

The comparison comes down to two questions: how large should the video be, and how much of the watch page must remain available? Full screen gives the strongest separation from comments. Theater mode preserves access while giving the player more room. Resizing lets the browser’s responsive layout find a different balance, and Miniplayer intentionally makes the video secondary to browsing.
Can you move YouTube comments to another position?
For a viewer on desktop, YouTube’s documented help does not include a control for dragging the comments panel, docking it on the opposite side, or placing it in a separate floating window. The available controls change player size or page visibility. A responsive layout may rearrange content when the browser window changes, but that is different from choosing a precise comments position.

If your aim is to keep comments out of sight, Full screen followed by scrolling up is the supported approach. If you want comments available while giving the video more room, Theater mode or a resized browser window changes the balance without promising a custom panel location. If you want a smaller always-available video while navigating YouTube, use Miniplayer.

Viewer layout versus a creator’s comment settings
Comments can be unavailable even when your layout is working normally. YouTube’s computer comment guidance explains that commenting depends on the video owner enabling comments and that channel- or video-level restrictions can apply. A viewer cannot override those restrictions with Theater mode, Full screen, window resizing or Miniplayer.
If you are watching someone else’s video
- Use the layout controls only to decide how much of the page you see.
- If no comments are present, check whether the video owner has disabled them or whether the channel or video has a restriction.
- Do not treat an absent comments section as evidence that a display control failed.
If you own the video
- Open YouTube Studio.
- Select the video whose discussion settings you want to change.
- Open that video’s comment settings.
- Adjust the available comment-availability or ordering options, then save if YouTube presents a save command.
Creator settings affect the video for viewers and can determine whether comments are available or how they are ordered. They do not create a personal, movable comments panel for the owner. The exact labels can vary as YouTube Studio changes, so follow the controls shown for the selected video.
Changing the order of comments is also different from hiding them. Ordering affects which comments appear first when comments are available; it does not change the size of the player or the amount of page shown around it. Likewise, disabling comments is a video-level decision, not a way for one viewer to clean up their own screen.
How to return to a normal watch page
When Full screen is no longer useful, use the player’s Full screen control again to leave it and return to the watch page. Theater mode can likewise be toggled from its player control. If you resized the browser, restore the window to the dimensions you normally use. To leave Miniplayer, select the control that returns to the regular video page.
Returning to the standard page does not change comment availability or ordering. It only restores the ordinary viewing layout. If comments were missing before you changed modes, they will remain subject to the same owner, channel or video restrictions afterward.
Troubleshooting when comments still appear
Full screen still shows page content
Scroll upward inside the YouTube page. YouTube’s documented behavior is that scrolling down reveals comments and upcoming videos, while scrolling back up hides everything except the video. If the page has moved, place the pointer over the page and scroll up again.
The player is not large enough in Theater mode
Theater mode enlarges the player without making it full screen. If you need the most focused view, select Full screen instead. If the available width is the issue, resize the browser window and allow the responsive layout to adapt.

You cannot find a comments section
Layout controls cannot restore comments that the owner has disabled or that are restricted for the channel or video. Check another video to determine whether the issue is specific to that video. A missing section can be a setting or eligibility issue rather than a browser-layout problem.
You expected comments to stay visible while the video filled the screen
Full screen prioritizes the video. Scrolling down temporarily brings comments into view, and scrolling back up hides page content again. There is no documented viewer control that pins comments beside a full-screen player.
The controls look different
YouTube’s interface can change. Look in the player controls for the functions named Theater mode, Full screen and Miniplayer, and use the current on-screen labels. The underlying choices described by YouTube Help remain layout choices rather than a custom comments-placement system.
Resizing seems to have no useful effect
Window resizing changes the space available to the responsive page, but it does not guarantee a particular arrangement. Try a clearly wider or narrower window and watch how the player and surrounding content reflow. If the goal is simply to remove page distractions, Full screen is more direct than repeatedly adjusting the window.

You want comments hidden but still need other page controls
The documented controls do not offer a comments-only switch. Theater mode keeps the page available while enlarging the player, and browser resizing changes the overall proportions. If you need the video isolated temporarily, use Full screen and scroll back up; when you need page controls again, return to the watch page.

Choose Full screen when distraction is the problem
Use Full screen if the comments column, recommendations and other page elements are pulling your attention away. Scroll down only when you deliberately want to read comments or see what is next, then scroll back up for the video-only view.
Choose Theater mode when you need both video and page access
Theater mode suits viewers who want a larger player but still need the watch page. It avoids the repeated reveal-and-hide cycle required by Full screen when comments or other page controls are part of the session.
Choose browser resizing when proportions are the problem
Resize the browser when the player-to-page balance feels wrong at the current window width. This method changes the space available to the whole YouTube page, so it is more flexible than a single player toggle but less focused than Full screen.
Choose Miniplayer when multitasking is the priority
Miniplayer is appropriate when the video should remain available as you browse. It intentionally reduces the viewing area and should not be selected as a method for hiding or relocating comments.

You can hide surrounding YouTube page content while watching on desktop by entering Full screen and scrolling back up. Theater mode and browser resizing alter the player’s available space, while Miniplayer creates a smaller viewing area. YouTube’s documented desktop controls do not let viewers freely move the comments panel; creator-side comment settings are a separate function that affects the video’s audience.
