To hide crash, construction, road-closure, and other incident symbols on Google Maps, turn off the Traffic map detail. On a phone or tablet, tap Layers, then tap Traffic to clear the selection. On a computer, open Layers in the lower-left corner, choose More, and switch off Traffic.
This removes the entire traffic display, not just incident icons. If what you want to stop is spoken or on-screen navigation warnings rather than symbols on the map, use Android’s separate alert setting under Profile picture or initial > Settings > Navigation > Alert options.
What to turn off for visible incident icons
Google Maps places accident, construction, road-closure, and similar incident symbols inside its Traffic display. Google’s documented control is the complete Traffic layer or map detail. There is no documented switch that hides only incident symbols while leaving the other traffic information visible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThat means the choice is straightforward:
- Want a cleaner map? Turn off Traffic in Layers.
- Want fewer driving warnings? Change Android’s navigation alert option.
- Want both? Change both controls; they affect different parts of Maps.
Traffic information is not available in every location, and Google can move labels or controls as the Maps interface changes. The names below match Google’s current Help instructions, but the exact placement can vary by app or browser update.

Traffic layer versus navigation alerts
These settings are easy to confuse because both involve incidents. They do different jobs.
| Control | Where to find it | What changes | What remains unchanged |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traffic map detail/layer | Mobile: Layers in the upper-right corner. Computer: Layers in the lower-left corner, then More. | Hides the traffic display, including the incident symbols shown in that display. | It does not selectively preserve traffic colors or other traffic details; the whole traffic detail is hidden. |
| Get alerts for reported incidents and other conditions that may impact your drive | Android: Profile picture or initial > Settings > Navigation > Alert options. | Controls incident-related navigation alerts while using Android navigation. | Google does not document this option as a control for map-icon visibility. |
Use the first control when the problem is visual clutter on the map. Use the second when the problem is alert noise during a trip. Turning off alerts should not be treated as a substitute for hiding the Traffic detail, and hiding the Traffic detail should not be treated as confirmation that spoken alerts are disabled.
Android phone or tablet: hide incident symbols
Turn off the Traffic map detail
- Open the Google Maps app.
- Tap Layers in the upper-right corner.
- Under map details, tap Traffic.
- If Traffic was selected, tapping it again clears that map detail and removes the traffic display, including its incident symbols.
Google’s mobile instructions use a tap-again behavior: selecting a map detail displays it, and tapping the selected detail again hides it. If the map still looks busy, close the Layers panel and inspect the map itself; you may be seeing another map feature rather than a Traffic incident symbol.

- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Navigation.
- Find Alert options.
- Turn off Get alerts for reported incidents and other conditions that may impact your drive.
This changes the alert behavior documented for Android navigation. It is not documented as a way to remove symbols from the map, so use the Layers control as well if you need a less cluttered map.
iPhone or iPad: remove traffic incidents from the map
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap Layers in the upper-right corner.
- Under map details, tap Traffic.
- If Traffic is already selected, tap it again to hide the detail.
The iPhone and iPad instructions cover the map display. The documented Android alert path is separate; do not assume that the mobile Traffic toggle controls every navigation notification on iOS or iPadOS.
Computer: turn off the Traffic layer
- Open Google Maps in your desktop browser.
- Click Layers at the bottom left.
- Point to Layers in the panel.
- Click More.
- Turn off Traffic.
Desktop Maps places Traffic among the additional layers rather than using the same compact mobile presentation. The outcome is the same: the traffic display and its incident symbols are hidden together.
What disappears when Traffic is disabled
Google’s traffic legend includes more than one kind of event. Crash reports, construction, road closures, and other reported conditions are represented within the traffic display. Because the documented switch controls that display as a whole, turning it off removes those incident markers along with the traffic information shown in that layer.

This is a clutter-versus-information trade-off:
- Cleaner overview: fewer colored traffic elements and event symbols compete with roads, labels, businesses, and routes.
- Less live context: traffic details that were available through the Traffic display are no longer visible while the layer is off.
- No incident-only mode: Google’s checked Help instructions do not provide a filter that keeps traffic details while suppressing only crashes, construction, or closures.
If you need traffic context for a particular journey, you can re-open Layers and enable Traffic again. The documented instructions do not promise a separate per-incident-category switch.
Why turning off alerts does not necessarily clean up the map
Navigation alerts and map details are separate controls. The Android alert option is designed for reports and conditions that may affect a drive while navigation is running. The Traffic layer controls what is drawn in the map view. Google documents the alert option as an alert preference, not as an icon-visibility preference.
For example, if you disable the Android alert option but leave Traffic enabled, incident symbols can still appear on the map. Conversely, if you disable Traffic but leave the alert option enabled, navigation can still provide the alert behavior associated with that option. Match the setting to the symptom you are trying to fix.

You are driving and do not want incident warnings
On Android, open Settings > Navigation > Alert options and turn off the reported-incidents option. This addresses the alert channel rather than the map drawing.
You want a clean map but still want to decide case by case
Leave Traffic off while browsing or planning, then enable it from Layers when checking current traffic conditions before a trip. There is no documented incident-only filter, so the choice is between the complete Traffic display and no Traffic display.
You cannot find the Traffic option
On mobile, look inside the Layers panel under map details. On desktop, open Layers, point to Layers, and choose More; Traffic is listed with the additional layers there. If the option is absent or arranged differently, the app or browser may have a newer interface, or traffic information may not be available for the area being viewed.

Troubleshooting when symbols remain
Confirm that Traffic is actually cleared
Open Layers again and check whether Traffic is still selected. On mobile, tapping a selected detail again hides it. On a computer, return to the Layers and More menus and verify that Traffic is switched off.

Distinguish traffic incidents from other map content
Not every marker is a traffic incident. Business pins, saved places, route instructions, and other map details can remain after Traffic is disabled. If only those items remain, the Traffic control has done its job; they belong to different map content.
Check whether you changed alerts instead of the map layer
If you followed the Android Navigation alert path, you changed notifications, not the map display. Return to the Layers panel and clear Traffic to remove the incident symbols.
Account for interface changes
Google notes that interface labels and placement can change as Maps is updated. Look for the named functions—Layers, Traffic, More, Navigation, and Alert options—even if their exact location differs from these steps. The checked Help instructions do not specify release-version numbers for these controls.

Google says traffic information is not available everywhere. In an area without traffic coverage, the Traffic detail may provide little or no information, and the map may not match examples from another region. Availability does not create an incident-only control; it simply limits whether traffic data appears.
Limitations of Google’s documented controls
The important limitation is granularity. Google documents a complete Traffic toggle, not separate switches for crashes, construction, closures, or other event categories. If your goal is to keep traffic speed or congestion information while hiding only accident icons, Maps does not document a supported setting for that combination.
Likewise, the Android alert option is not documented as a universal notification master switch or as a way to edit individual incident categories. It specifically addresses alerts for reported incidents and other conditions that may impact a drive. Keep the distinction in mind when evaluating what changed after you toggle it.
A quick decision checklist
- Visible symbols are the problem: open Layers and turn off Traffic.
- Spoken or navigation warnings are the problem: on Android, turn off the reported-incidents option under Navigation and Alert options.
- You need both changes: adjust both controls because they operate independently.
- You still need traffic context: understand that hiding Traffic removes the complete traffic display, not just incident markers.
- You cannot see the control: check the mobile map-details list or the desktop Layers > More menu, and allow for interface variation and regional availability.
Bottom line
For map clutter, disable Traffic in Google Maps’ Layers menu. That is the documented way to hide incident reports, but it also hides the rest of the Traffic display because Google does not document an incident-only filter. For unwanted Android navigation warnings, separately disable Get alerts for reported incidents and other conditions that may impact your drive under Settings > Navigation > Alert options.
