To remove a compatible app from the Android Auto launcher, open Android Auto on your phone, choose Settings > Customize launcher, and deselect the app. That route comes from a Google Help Community Product Expert answer dated May 28, 2020, so the label may not appear on every current phone or Android Auto version. Android Auto’s separate recent-app area is different: Google’s current screen guide describes it as showing recently used navigation, media and communication apps, plus one additional app, but documents no control for hiding that area or its recommendations.
What you can hide—and what you cannot
Android Auto presents apps in more than one place. The full launcher is the list you open from the car display. A separate recent-app area can surface apps you used recently. These surfaces should not be treated as the same setting.

This distinction explains most “why is this app still showing?” and “where did my app go?” reports. Launcher visibility, Android Auto compatibility, Samsung’s phone-level app management and recent-app presentation are separate issues.
Hide a compatible app from the Android Auto launcher
The only specific hide-app procedure identified in Google’s material is a Google Android Auto Help Community answer by Product Expert Peter R., posted May 28, 2020. It says to open Android Auto on the phone, go to Settings > Customize launcher, and deselect apps you do not want to show in the Android Auto launcher.

- Open Android Auto on your phone. Do this before connecting to the car if possible, so you are changing the phone-side Android Auto settings rather than a separate vehicle menu.
- Open Settings. Look for an entry named Customize launcher.
- Review the app list. The list represents apps Android Auto can place in its launcher. It is not a list of every app installed on the phone.
- Deselect each app you do not want listed. The community instruction describes deselection as the way to remove an app from the launcher.
- Return to Android Auto and check the launcher. If the app remains visible, close and reopen the Android Auto connection and confirm that you changed the launcher list rather than a phone home-screen folder.
The wording and location of this setting are not confirmed for every current phone manufacturer, Android Auto release, region or vehicle. The instruction is useful as the first route to check, not as a guarantee that every device still exposes the same menu.
What the launcher list actually represents
The launcher list is a filtered view, not a second copy of the phone’s app drawer. Android Auto can list only apps that have been made compatible with its driving interface, and the customization screen can only act on items Android Auto recognizes. This is why an ordinary phone game, shopping app or other unsupported program may never appear as a selectable row. There is nothing to deselect if Android Auto has no supported launcher entry for it.
Conversely, seeing an app in the launcher does not mean it is currently open or being recommended. It means the compatible app is available from the main Android Auto app list. A recent-app tile is a different signal: it reflects recent use in one of the categories Google identifies, plus one additional app. Check which screen contains the item before changing settings.
For a clean test, make one change at a time. Deselect the app, reconnect Android Auto, and inspect the full launcher. Then inspect the recent-app area separately. This prevents a recommendation tile from being mistaken for a failed launcher change.
If “Customize launcher” is missing
Do not assume that you overlooked a hidden toggle. Google’s current official screen guide, reviewed October 13, 2026, confirms the launcher and recent-app surfaces but does not provide current step-by-step instructions for editing the launcher list. The older community answer is the source that names the menu.
When the entry is absent, use this process:
- Confirm that you opened Android Auto settings on the phone, not the vehicle’s general infotainment settings.
- Look for a differently worded launcher or app-list setting. Labels can change with phone software and Android Auto updates; do not treat a similarly named notification, home-screen or permission setting as equivalent.
- Check whether the app is actually Android Auto-compatible. An unsupported app will not be selectable merely because it is installed.
- Identify the surface where you see the app. If it appears only in the recent-app strip, the launcher customization list may not control it.
- If the control still is not available, consult help for the exact phone model and Android Auto version. Google’s documentation does not establish a universal current path.
A missing menu is therefore a compatibility and version question, not evidence that the app cannot ever be hidden. Conversely, the existence of the old menu does not prove that a current device supports it.

Why an app may still appear in recommendations
Google’s current screen guide describes the recent-app area as containing the navigation, media and communication apps used most recently, along with one additional app. This is a separate presentation layer from the full launcher.

The guide does not document a setting to turn off that area, suppress its recommendations or remove a particular entry. As a result, you should not promise that deselecting an app in Customize launcher will also remove it from the recent-app area. The two lists may be generated for different purposes.
Clearing app history, uninstalling an app, changing unrelated notification settings or repeatedly reconnecting the phone may affect what you see in a particular session, but Google’s documentation does not establish any of those actions as a reliable way to suppress recent-app entries. Present them as experiments only if you can verify the result on the reader’s own device; they are not documented controls.
If your goal is specifically to eliminate recommendations while driving, the evidence supports a narrower answer: Android Auto documents what the recent area displays, but not a recommendation-specific off switch.
Check compatibility before trying to hide an app
Android Auto is not a mirror of the phone’s complete app drawer. Google says it works with selected compatible apps, including categories such as music, messaging and news services. An app must support Android Auto before it can normally appear as a launcher item.

- Determine whether the app developer provides Android Auto support. Installation on the phone alone does not establish compatibility.
- Check whether you are looking for a supported category. Android Auto’s driving-oriented interface is not intended to expose every phone app.
- Separate “not compatible” from “hidden.” An unsupported app is not being filtered by your launcher preferences; it has no Android Auto launcher entry to select.
- If the app used to appear and then vanished, investigate phone-level disablement, especially on Samsung devices, before changing launcher preferences.
This check prevents a common mistake: trying to add an app that Android Auto does not support, then concluding that launcher customization is broken.
When a Samsung phone has disabled the app
Google’s Android Auto troubleshooting guidance notes that Samsung phones may temporarily disable apps that have not been used for a while. A disabled app can look as though Android Auto removed it, even though the cause is the phone’s unused-app management.
- Open the missing app on the phone. Opening it can re-enable an app that Samsung marked as unused.
- Check the phone’s battery or app-management settings. Samsung labels may include Auto disable unused apps or Put unused apps to sleep. The exact wording can vary by phone software.
- Recheck Android Auto compatibility. Re-enabling the phone app does not make an unsupported app compatible with Android Auto.
- Only then investigate launcher visibility. If the app is compatible and active but absent from the launcher, look for the launcher customization control or device-specific help.
This is a phone operating-system behavior, not an Android Auto recommendation setting. Changing it may restore an app that disappeared, but it does not provide a way to remove recent-app suggestions.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
Use this order so that each test answers one question:
- Locate the item. Decide whether it is in the full launcher, the recent-app area, or nowhere on the car screen.
- Check support. If it is not a compatible Android Auto app, it cannot be added or selected through launcher preferences.
- Check phone status. On Samsung, open an app that disappeared and review unused-app controls.
- Check launcher preferences. In the phone-side Android Auto settings, look for Customize launcher and deselect the compatible app.
- Reconnect and verify. Inspect the full launcher and recent area independently after reconnecting.
- Record the environment. If the menu is absent or behavior differs, note the phone model, Android software, Android Auto version and vehicle system before seeking device-specific assistance.
This sequence avoids destructive steps. There is no documented need to uninstall an app, reset the vehicle system or change unrelated permissions merely to test launcher visibility.
Decision path for common problems
The app is in the full launcher and you want it gone
Open Android Auto on the phone and check Settings > Customize launcher. Deselect the app if the control is available. Verify the result in the full launcher, not only in the recent-app area.

The app appears only in the recent-app area
Treat it as a recommendation or recent-use entry. Google’s current guide does not document a toggle for hiding that area or selecting which entries it may show. Do not claim that launcher deselection controls it.

Check Android Auto compatibility first. Android Auto supports selected apps rather than every installed phone app. An unsupported app cannot be made into a launcher item through phone installation alone.
The app used to appear and then disappeared
On a Samsung phone, open the app and review unused-app settings for automatic disabling or sleep. On any phone, then check compatibility and launcher visibility separately.
The customization menu is unavailable
There is no documented universal replacement path in the current screen guide. Confirm that you are in the phone’s Android Auto settings, identify your phone and software versions, and use device-specific support rather than assuming that a vehicle menu controls the list.
You want to remove every distraction from the car screen
The documented launcher control can address selected compatible apps where the menu exists. It does not establish control over the recent-app area, and Android Auto’s documentation does not promise that all suggestions can be disabled.

Google describes Android Auto apps as optimized for driving and says the interface is designed to help drivers focus. Some interactions have safety lockouts. Those design choices explain why Android Auto exposes a limited set of compatible app categories, but they do not turn launcher customization into a measured safety intervention.

Hiding an app can reduce the number of items you see in the full launcher, yet it does not prove that the app will never appear in a recent-app surface or that a driver will be less distracted. Keep the vehicle’s laws, manufacturer guidance and your own attention on driving. Make changes while parked, and do not use the car display to experiment with settings in motion.
