The safest, most practical way to hide living-room cables is to match the method to the cable. Use a paintable surface raceway for a visible TV-to-console run, a low-voltage in-wall grommet for HDMI and other signal leads, and a purpose-built in-wall power kit—or a newly installed outlet—when power must move inside the wall. Gather controller charging cords with reusable ties or clips, keep them out of walkways, and never put a conventional extension cord inside a wall.

Start by identifying every cable, planning a route that remains accessible, and checking the instructions for the exact product and wall construction. The cleanest-looking solution is not automatically the safest: a low-voltage HDMI grommet cannot be used to conceal an ordinary TV power cord, and hiding an unsuitable cord does not make it suitable.

Choose the cable-hiding method before you start

There is no single universal cable-management product. A wall-mounted television, a TV on furniture, a game console, and wireless controller chargers create different routing problems. The table below separates the common options by the work they require and the cable types they are intended to handle.

Method Best use Wall visibility Work required Cable support Easy to change later?
Surface raceway or cord cover TV-to-console runs across a finished wall Low; the cover remains visible Measure, cut, and attach to the wall surface Power and signal leads only when the specific cover and routing instructions allow them Usually yes; the cover can be opened
Low-voltage in-wall grommet HDMI, coaxial, Ethernet, and similar signal cables behind a wall-mounted TV Very low; only the grommet plates show Cut openings and route cable inside the wall Signal cables; Legrand’s CMK60 is identified as low-voltage only Moderate; adding cables may require reopening an opening
In-wall TV power and cable kit Moving TV power and data cables behind a wall-mounted set Very low Install a listed kit according to its instructions and local rules Only the cable types the kit is designed and listed for Moderate to difficult
Small clips or reusable ties Short console leads and controller charging cords Low when placed under furniture Attach or bundle without pinching the cable Short, low-voltage accessory leads Yes
Additional wall outlet A permanent power location where the existing outlet is inconvenient None after installation Electrical installation appropriate to the home and jurisdiction Household power at a fixed outlet Yes, with normal outlet access

A surface cover is generally the best starting point for a renter or anyone who wants a reversible project. In-wall routing can look cleaner, but it introduces questions about wall cavities, fire blocking, insulation, electrical separation, product listings, and local requirements. Treat each kit as a specific system rather than assuming that products with similar-looking plates are interchangeable.

Inventory the cables and plan the route

Label every lead

Pull the TV, console, sound system, network equipment, and chargers forward far enough to identify each cable. Label both ends of HDMI, Ethernet, coaxial, USB, and power leads with a small tag or removable tape. This prevents you from pulling the wrong cable when a device is moved and shows whether you need one large route or several smaller ones.

Decide what must remain accessible

Leave a service loop behind the TV and console instead of stretching a cable tightly. The loop should be large enough to unplug equipment, clean behind it, or replace a component without dismantling the entire route. Keep connection points, surge protection, power bricks, and switch controls where you can reach them. A hidden cable that cannot be serviced is difficult to troubleshoot and easy to damage.

Map a safe path

For a surface route, follow a straight vertical or horizontal line along the wall and baseboard. Avoid doors, walkways, heater outlets, sharp furniture edges, and places where a chair or vacuum can catch the cover. For an in-wall route, first determine whether studs, blocking, insulation, plumbing, or existing electrical wiring occupy the intended cavity. The product instructions should explain the permitted openings and routing; do not assume a cavity is empty because it sounds hollow.

Install a surface raceway or TV cord cover

A surface raceway hides a bundle without opening the wall. Wiremold’s paintable cord-cover range is designed to conceal and organize TV wiring; selected covers can be cut to fit and painted to blend with the wall. A Wiremold C30 product sheet lists wall screws and anchors and states that the base and cover can be cut to fit. Choose a cover large enough for the complete bundle without forcing cables into a sharp bend.

Step 1: Dry-fit the route

  1. Measure from the TV or wall plate to the console, including vertical drops, corners, and the service loops at both ends.
  2. Mark the route with removable painter’s tape. Check that cabinet doors, drawers, and ventilation openings still operate.
  3. Count the cables and compare the bundle with the raceway’s usable interior. Include the size of power plugs and any bulky adapters; a cover that fits bare cable may not fit a molded connector.

Step 2: Cut and prepare the cover

  1. Transfer the measurements to the raceway base and cover. Cut squarely with the tool specified by the manufacturer.
  2. Test each cut section on the wall before fastening it. Smooth rough edges so they cannot abrade insulation.
  3. Plan joints and corners so the cover closes fully. Do not force a cable around a corner tighter than the cable manufacturer’s bend guidance.

Step 3: Attach the base

  1. Use the supplied screws and anchors, or the fastening method specified for your wall surface. Do not substitute nails or staples driven over the cables.
  2. Keep fasteners in the raceway’s mounting area, not through the cable channel. A misplaced fastener can pierce insulation.
  3. Place the cables loosely in the base, separating power and signal leads when the instructions call for it. Leave the planned service loops outside the cover.

Step 4: Close, finish, and test

  1. Snap or screw on the cover without pinching the bundle. Check that it can be reopened if you need to add a lead.
  2. If the product is identified as paintable, use a compatible paint after preparing the surface as directed. Test paint on a short offcut first; do not block a removable seam with heavy paint.
  3. Reconnect devices and test video, audio, network access, charging, and power before pushing furniture fully into place.

Surface covers are also useful when a TV is not wall-mounted. Route the short cable bundle behind the furniture, then use a small section of cover only where the bundle would otherwise show. Do not bury a conventional extension cord under a rug or through a doorway merely because a raceway is inconvenient.

Use a low-voltage in-wall grommet for signal cables

A low-voltage grommet creates an entry and exit point for signal cables inside the wall. Legrand identifies the CMK60 Wall Grommet Kit for low-voltage cables such as HDMI. It is not a method for routing an ordinary TV power cord. Use this approach only for the cable types named in the product instructions.

Step 1: Confirm the cable and wall conditions

  • Verify that every cable is low-voltage and supported by the kit. HDMI, coaxial, and Ethernet may be covered; household power cords are not automatically covered.
  • Locate studs and inspect for blocking, insulation, plumbing, and electrical wiring. The openings must be positioned so the cable can pass freely without being crushed.
  • Check the cable length before cutting. You need enough slack to connect the TV and the console, plus a service loop.

Step 2: Mark and cut the openings

  1. Use the template or dimensions supplied with the grommet. Mark the upper opening behind the TV and the lower opening near the console.
  2. Cut carefully and keep the opening within the permitted size. Stop if you encounter unexpected resistance; do not push a drill or saw into an unknown obstruction.
  3. Install the grommet plates and edge protection exactly as directed. The cable should pass through a protected opening, not rub against a raw drywall edge.

Step 3: Pull and test the signal cables

  1. Feed a pull string or the cable itself between the openings without bending it sharply.
  2. Pull one cable at a time, keeping connectors protected. Do not yank a connector through a hole that is too small.
  3. Connect the equipment and test the highest-resolution video, audio return, network link, and any control functions before closing the room back up.

Signal problems after an in-wall pull usually come from a damaged connector, an overly tight bend, a cable that is too long for the required signal, or a loose connection at one end. A surface raceway is easier to reopen when you expect frequent equipment changes.

Use an in-wall power and cable kit only for its intended purpose

An in-wall TV power and cable kit is a separate product category from a low-voltage grommet. Legrand’s On-Q CPT306WV1 is described as hiding power together with HDMI, coaxial, and Cat 5e cabling behind a TV. Its product page lists ETLus and UL standard information. Those details apply to the specific listed kit; they do not make an unrelated extension cord or grommet suitable for in-wall power.

Check the kit before opening the wall

  • Read the complete installation instructions and confirm that the kit is intended for your wall type and the cable combination you plan to use.
  • Check the product’s listing marks, required components, outlet configuration, and any limits on cable routing.
  • Review local electrical rules. The sources available for this guide do not establish one installation method for every jurisdiction or wall construction.

Plan the power path

A purpose-built kit normally uses approved components at both ends rather than passing a detachable extension cord through the cavity. Keep power and low-voltage conductors arranged as the instructions specify. If the existing outlet is poorly placed, the safer permanent answer may be an additional outlet installed in the desired location rather than a hidden cord.

Know when to stop and call qualified help

Stop when you find unknown wiring, plumbing, structural blocking, asbestos-containing material, or a route that cannot meet the kit’s requirements. Electrical work that changes household wiring should be handled by qualified local help when required by the home, lease, or jurisdiction. Energize and test the installation only after every cover, box, and strain-relief component is installed as directed.

Organize console and controller cables

Bundle short leads without crushing them

Reusable hook-and-loop ties or small cable clips can gather controller charging leads, USB cables, and short console connections. The available product information does not establish a particular clip or tie model, so choose accessories that fit the cable diameter and can be removed without cutting insulation. Bundle loosely enough that each cable can be replaced and avoid compressing a cable under a furniture leg.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Create a charging zone

Place charging leads at one side of the console or in a small tray so they do not cross the seating path. Leave the connector end reachable and add a little slack so a controller can be used while charging. If several controllers share one charger, label the leads or use different lengths to reduce tangles. Keep the power brick ventilated and off the floor where it can be kicked or exposed to spills.

Route behind furniture

  1. Group only the cables that travel to the same destination.
  2. Clip the bundle to the rear edge or underside of the console, never across a hinge, drawer slide, or ventilation opening.
  3. Use a surface cover for the section that remains visible between the furniture and wall.
  4. Leave enough slack to pull the console forward for cleaning without unplugging every device.

When an additional outlet is the better answer

Heavy dependence on extension cords often indicates that outlets are in the wrong places. ESFI recommends installing additional outlets where they are needed rather than treating extension cords as permanent wiring. A new outlet can eliminate a long exposed run and provide a stable location for the TV, console, and surge protection.

The installation method depends on the wall, circuit, load, grounding, and local requirements. Arrange qualified local electrical help for work that involves household wiring, permits, or uncertainty about the existing circuit. Do not hide a power strip or extension cord in the wall as a substitute for an installed outlet.

Safety rules that do not change when cables are hidden

  • ESFI describes extension cords as temporary solutions, not substitutes for permanent household wiring.
  • Do not run a conventional extension cord through a wall, doorway, ceiling, floor, or rug.
  • Do not nail or staple cords to walls or baseboards. Fasteners can damage insulation and create shock or fire hazards.
  • Do not pinch cords behind furniture or place them where people walk.
  • Keep unsuitable cords out of service. CPSC guidance identifies missing applicable safety features—including minimum wire size, strain relief, polarization, and continuity—as risks that can contribute to shock or fire. Additional observable features apply to some indoor and outdoor cord types.
  • Follow the exact instructions for the cable-management product. A cover rated for surface organization is not automatically rated for in-wall use.

Before energizing a reorganized setup, inspect the full run for cuts, flattened sections, hot plugs, loose receptacles, and overloaded adapters. If a cord becomes warm, smells unusual, sparks, or shows damaged insulation, unplug it when safe and replace it with an appropriate product or obtain qualified electrical help.

Troubleshoot common problems after hiding the cables

The TV loses picture or audio

Open the accessible ends first and reseat each HDMI connection. Confirm that the cable was not sharply bent or crushed behind the TV. Test the same devices with a short known-good cable outside the wall; if that works, replace or reroute the concealed cable rather than repeatedly changing settings.

The cover will not close

The bundle is too large, a connector is trapped, or a corner is too tight. Remove one cable at a time, measure the usable channel rather than the outside width, and choose a larger cover or a second route. Never press the cover until it deforms the cable.

A controller charger keeps disconnecting

Check the connector for wear and make sure the lead is not being pulled sideways by a clip or furniture edge. Move the charging point so the cable approaches the controller naturally, then replace a damaged lead. Bundling several failing leads together will not solve an unreliable connection.

You cannot pull a cable through the wall

Do not force it. An obstruction may be blocking the cavity, the opening may be too small, or the cable may be catching on framing. Withdraw the cable, inspect the route, and use the product’s permitted access points. If the wall contains unknown wiring or plumbing, stop and obtain qualified help.

Room layouts that work well

Wall-mounted TV over a low console

Use a low-voltage grommet for HDMI, Ethernet, and coaxial cables when the wall and kit permit it. Use a listed in-wall power kit for power, or have an outlet installed behind or beside the TV. Keep the console end accessible and use a short surface cover for any section that cannot enter the wall.

TV sitting on furniture

Keep the TV’s power lead behind the furniture, bundle signal cables along the rear edge, and use clips or reusable ties for controller chargers. A full in-wall project is usually unnecessary unless the furniture is far from the outlet or the visible run remains in a walkway.

Corner-mounted console

Run a surface raceway along the shortest wall-safe path rather than diagonally across the room. Use corner fittings or carefully planned cuts so the cover remains closed. Leave ventilation space around the console and its power adapter.

Maintain the installation and plan for future equipment

Keep a simple cable map in the console drawer or on your phone, noting which lead serves each device and where the service loops are. Recheck the route when replacing a TV, console, or receiver; a new connector may require a larger cover or a different path. Openable surface raceways make upgrades easier than sealed channels, while in-wall routes should be reopened only through the access points and procedures permitted by the product.

Dust the visible cover and inspect clips, grommets, plugs, and adapters during routine cleaning. Do not paint over heat-producing adapters, outlet faces, ventilation openings, or removable seams. If the room changes use—such as adding a soundbar, network switch, or another console—recalculate the bundle and electrical load instead of simply adding another extension cord.

A practical decision checklist

  • Choose a paintable surface raceway when you need a quick, reversible TV-to-console route.
  • Choose a low-voltage in-wall grommet only for signal cables named by that kit’s instructions.
  • Choose a purpose-built in-wall power and cable kit only when its listing, instructions, wall conditions, and local rules all fit the installation.
  • Choose an additional outlet when the room needs a permanent power location.
  • Use clips and reusable ties for short controller and console leads, keeping chargers reachable and ventilated.
  • Reject any plan that hides a conventional extension cord in a wall, doorway, ceiling, floor, or rug.

The Bottom Line

For most living rooms, begin with a paintable surface raceway and organized charging zone. Move signal cables into a low-voltage grommet only when the wall and kit support it, and handle in-wall power through a specifically designed kit or a permanent outlet installation—not a hidden extension cord.
