In the United States, Amazon’s currently documented option for keeping adults’ order histories separate is Amazon Family: each adult uses a separate sign-on, and Amazon says adult orders are automatically private from other people in the home. If the specific concern is an order name appearing or being spoken by an Echo device, turn off item-title shopping notifications in the Alexa app. These controls address different kinds of visibility; neither deletes Amazon’s transaction records.

This guide describes US account controls. Amazon’s UK guidance still describes archiving orders, but Amazon Staff said on May 2, 2025, that US customers can no longer archive them. Check the controls for your own marketplace rather than applying UK steps to a US account.

How do I hide an Amazon order from my family?

For US customers, the practical answer depends on whether household members use separate adult accounts or share one login. Amazon’s current consumer guidance points to Amazon Family and separate adult sign-ons for separate order histories. It does not document a way to make one order private from other people who can use the same Amazon login.

Amazon says that, once adults have their own access through Amazon Family, adult orders are automatically private from everyone else in the home. This is account separation, not a per-order hiding switch. If everyone continues to sign in to one shared account, someone with access to that account may be able to see its order history. Changing a notification on one phone or Echo device does not change who can open that shared account.

So first identify the kind of visibility you want to limit. If another adult can browse the same account’s orders, the issue is account access. If an Echo might speak an item name, that is an Alexa notification issue. If accounts are linked but devices or lists still expose household activity, those are separate shared features to review. There is no single switch in the guidance that makes every trace of a purchase private across the household.

Set up separate adult access

  1. Have each adult use their own Amazon sign-on. The goal is for each person to access their own account, rather than share one username and password. If two adults keep using the same sign-on, they are still looking at the same account’s order history; changing which device is used to shop does not create a separate history.
  2. Review Amazon Family eligibility and terms. Amazon’s US help guidance describes account linking and says adults agree to share payment methods for household verification. Requirements and benefit sharing can depend on the feature and eligibility, so read the terms shown during setup instead of assuming every Prime member, plan, or marketplace has identical rules. In particular, consider the payment-method sharing terms before linking accounts; this is not simply a setting to switch on without reviewing what Amazon asks adults to agree to.
  3. Link the adult accounts through Amazon Family if eligible. Follow the current on-screen setup flow. The exact prompts and available benefits can depend on the account and feature. Once the accounts are set up with separate adult access, Amazon says adult orders are private from other household members.
  4. Review what else is shared. Account separation protects the order-history access described by Amazon, but linked accounts can still share other information or send notifications to linked devices. Check those settings separately. Amazon says adults share Amazon Shopping Lists, and linked Alexa devices may receive notifications for other members.

Do not hand out the new separate sign-on as a household login if the purpose is to keep that account’s order history private. Account credentials determine who can sign in; Amazon Family does not turn an order inside a shared login into a private order. Likewise, account separation should not be read as a promise that all household activity is hidden: lists and linked-device notifications have their own sharing behavior.

There is no need to buy a special device or accessory to use the account-level approach described here. The relevant changes are adult account access through Amazon Family and, where needed, Alexa app notification preferences. Review any setup or benefit terms that appear in your own account rather than assuming there is one universal configuration or eligibility rule.

Can I hide an Amazon purchase from my spouse if we share a login?

Amazon’s US guidance does not provide a current order-by-order privacy setting for a shared login. If another person can sign in to the same account, notification changes on a device will not remove that person’s access to the account’s order history. The documented route for separate adult order histories is to move to separate adult sign-ons through Amazon Family, subject to the setup terms and eligibility.

That distinction matters when choosing a fix: account separation changes who can access an adult’s order history; Alexa notification settings reduce one way an order might be revealed through an Echo device. The Alexa setting is not a substitute for separate sign-ons. For example, turning off item-title announcements may stop an Echo from saying what was ordered, but it does not change what another person can see after signing in to the same Amazon account.

If changing the household’s account arrangement is not possible, be precise about what the Alexa controls can and cannot do. They address the notification surface, not the shared account itself. Amazon’s current US consumer guidance does not describe a way to hide just one purchase from another person who retains access to that login. Nor does it describe notification changes as a method for deleting an order.

How do I stop Alexa from announcing what I ordered?

To reduce the chance that an Echo device says or shows an item title in an Amazon Shopping notification, use the Alexa app setting in Amazon’s US guide:

  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Tap More.
  3. Open Settings.
  4. Tap Notifications.
  5. Choose Amazon Shopping.
  6. Turn off the option that allows Alexa to say or show item titles in shopping notifications.

App labels can change as the interface is updated. Look for the Amazon Shopping notification controls related to item titles if the wording on your screen differs. The important point is to adjust the item-title setting, rather than assume that all Amazon Shopping notifications or account access are being changed in the same way.

This changes Alexa shopping notifications; it does not delete the order or stop someone with access to the same Amazon account from viewing its order history. It is a device-notification measure. It may be useful when the specific concern is an Echo announcing or displaying a product name, but it is not the account-separation solution Amazon describes for separate adult order histories.

Check linked-account notification settings too

Amazon says Alexa devices linked through Amazon Family may receive notifications for more than one linked member. Its Alexa help guidance says the app’s notification preferences include controls for notifications received from linked accounts and notifications sent to linked accounts. Review those controls if the concern is a household member’s linked device revealing a purchase, rather than only an announcement on your own device.

Think of this as a second check after the item-title setting. The item-title control concerns what Alexa says or shows in shopping notifications; the linked-account controls concern notifications associated with linked accounts. A household may need to look at both if multiple adults’ accounts are connected to Alexa devices. Amazon’s guidance does not say that turning off an item title automatically disconnects linked accounts or changes the other member’s account access.

If the Alexa app’s current wording differs from the menu path above, use the Amazon Shopping notification area and inspect the linked-account notification preferences available there. Menu labels can change over time, so follow the current controls visible in your app. If a person can still see an order by opening a shared Amazon account, return to the account-access question: notification settings cannot resolve that exposure.

What can remain visible after separating accounts?

Separate adult order histories do not mean every household feature becomes private. Amazon says adults share Amazon Shopping Lists, and linked-family devices may receive other members’ notifications. Treat lists and Alexa notifications as separate shared surfaces: adjust the relevant list or notification settings rather than assuming account separation changes them automatically.

  • Order history: Amazon says adult orders are private from other household members when adults have separate access through Amazon Family.
  • Alexa shopping notifications: These have their own settings, including item-title and linked-account notification controls.
  • Shopping Lists: Amazon says adults share Amazon Shopping Lists. Separate order histories do not change that documented sharing behavior.
  • Amazon’s records: A change in household visibility does not erase Amazon’s own purchase records. Amazon’s privacy notice says purchase history remains accessible through Your Account.

Also consider what happens outside the account: an order may be noticed when a package arrives or is opened. The account and notification settings described here do not control what another person physically sees at home. Account privacy and delivery privacy are different questions. The settings covered here address order-history access and Alexa shopping notifications; they do not guarantee that a parcel or its contents will go unnoticed.

This is why it helps to identify the exposure before making changes. Someone who can sign in to a shared account presents a different problem from an Echo that announces item names. A linked device receiving notifications is another distinct issue, and a shared Shopping List remains a separate surface. Use the control that matches the specific concern, and do not assume one adjustment covers the others.

Can I delete an Amazon order from my history?

For US customers, do not follow older instructions that say to open Your Orders and select Archive order. In a May 2, 2025 response in Amazon.com’s Digital and Device Forum, Amazon Staff responder Diane B. wrote: “You can no longer archive orders.” That is the current US guidance from Amazon Staff cited here, so an older US walkthrough showing an archive button should not be treated as current.

Amazon’s UK guide still describes an archive procedure: on desktop, go to Your Orders, archive a previous order, and find it later under Archived Orders. That is UK-specific guidance and conflicts with the later US staff response. Do not treat those UK steps as a working option for a US account; readers elsewhere should check the controls for their own marketplace. Availability can vary by marketplace, and the difference between the US staff response and UK guide is a reason not to transfer instructions from one country’s help page to another without checking.

Archiving, where available, is not the same as deleting Amazon’s records. Amazon’s privacy notice says purchase history is among the information accessible through Your Account. The documented measures here reduce household visibility through separate adult access and notification settings; they do not establish a way to erase Amazon’s transaction records. In short, hiding an order from another household member and removing the transaction from Amazon’s systems are not the same action.

If your goal is to prevent another adult from browsing order history, use separate adult sign-ons through Amazon Family where eligible. If the goal is simply to stop an Echo from identifying an item, change Alexa’s shopping notification settings. If the goal is to remove Amazon’s record, the Amazon sources cited here do not provide a permanent deletion method. Do not assume that an archived view, where a marketplace still offers one, erases the underlying purchase record.

Which option should I use?

Option What it addresses Setup Important limit
Separate adult sign-ons through Amazon Family Access to adult order histories within the household Link adult accounts, subject to eligibility and on-screen terms Other shared features, including Shopping Lists and linked-device notifications, need separate attention
Alexa shopping notification controls Item names spoken or shown in shopping notifications on Alexa devices Change Amazon Shopping notification preferences in the Alexa app Does not separate order histories or remove access through a shared Amazon login

The choice comes down to the type of exposure and the effort involved. Separate adult sign-ons are the account-level choice for separating adult order histories, but require linking accounts and reviewing Amazon Family terms and eligibility. Alexa notification controls are a narrower app-setting change for item names spoken or shown by Alexa. They do not rearrange account access. These are complementary controls if both concerns apply, not interchangeable alternatives.

If both concerns apply, use separate adult sign-ons for account-level order-history privacy and configure Alexa notifications as a second, device-level measure. If the household uses one shared login, changing Alexa settings alone does not make its orders private from another person who can sign in. Also review the linked-account notification settings and shared Shopping Lists, because Amazon describes these as separate household features.

If the old archive option or privacy setting is missing

  • You are in the US and cannot find “Archive order”: Amazon Staff said on May 2, 2025, that US customers can no longer archive orders. Do not rely on older US walkthroughs showing that button.
  • You are outside the US: Amazon’s UK guidance still includes archiving, while US guidance differs. Marketplace controls can vary, so check the help and account settings for the country attached to your Amazon account.
  • You changed Alexa notifications but an adult can still see the order: The notification setting only addresses Alexa shopping notifications. Use separate adult access if the problem is shared order-history access.
  • A linked Echo device still receives household notifications: Review Alexa’s notification preferences for notifications received from and sent to linked accounts, as well as item-title announcements.
  • You want the purchase removed from Amazon’s records: The sources described here do not establish a permanent deletion method; Amazon says purchase history remains accessible through Your Account.

Where to check Alexa-purchased order details

Amazon’s Alexa FAQ identifies where to review order details for purchases made with Alexa. That is useful when you need to find an order associated with an Alexa purchase, but reviewing those details is distinct from hiding the order from another person with access to the account. Finding order details does not change household permissions, Alexa notifications, or the Amazon record of the purchase.

If an order was placed through Alexa, treat the question of locating its details separately from the question of limiting what other people can see. Amazon’s FAQ addresses the former; the account separation and notification controls above address the latter. Do not infer that changing an Alexa setting deletes the order or that locating order details provides a privacy control.

Questions readers ask

Can I hide just one order from another person on a shared Amazon account?

Amazon’s US guidance does not document a current per-order hiding switch for a shared login. Another person who can sign in to that account may be able to view its order history. Amazon points to separate adult sign-ons through Amazon Family for separate adult order histories.

Does turning off Alexa item announcements hide the order from my spouse?

No. It reduces the chance that Alexa says or shows an item title in shopping notifications. It does not remove another person’s access to an account that both people share, and it does not delete the purchase record.

Can Amazon Family keep every household activity private?

No. Amazon says adult orders are private from other household members when adults have separate access, but it also says adults share Amazon Shopping Lists and linked Alexa devices may receive notifications for other members. Review those settings and shared features separately.
