Use Excel’s regular Hide command for a support sheet users may need to restore. Use VBA’s xlSheetVeryHidden state only when you want the sheet omitted from the normal Unhide dialog and have a documented way for a maintainer to restore it. Neither option protects confidential data, and at least one worksheet must remain visible.
Choose the right visibility setting
A backend worksheet can hold lookup values, configuration, or other supporting data without taking up space in the workbook’s main workflow. Choose its visibility based on who should be able to restore it:

Both states control visibility, not access to the sheet’s contents. Microsoft notes that hidden data can still be referenced, so do not use either setting to protect secrets or confidential information.
Hide a worksheet from Excel’s interface
Use regular hiding when workbook users should be able to bring the sheet back without VBA. Microsoft’s instructions are in Hide or Unhide worksheets.

- Right-click the worksheet tab you want to hide.
- Select Hide. The worksheet disappears from the tabs, but remains in the workbook.
- To restore it, right-click a visible worksheet tab, choose Unhide, select the sheet, and confirm.
Make a worksheet VeryHidden with VBA
Use xlSheetVeryHidden if the sheet should not appear in Excel’s standard Unhide dialog. Microsoft documents the visibility states and their values as xlSheetVisible (-1), xlSheetHidden (0), and xlSheetVeryHidden (2).
- Open the Visual Basic Editor in Excel and locate the workbook project.
- In the Immediate window, run
ThisWorkbook.Worksheets("Backend").Visible = xlSheetVeryHidden, replacingBackendwith the exact worksheet name. - To restore the sheet, set its property to visible:
ThisWorkbook.Worksheets("Backend").Visible = xlSheetVisible. Microsoft’s visibility enumeration documentation defines these states; its VeryHidden macro guidance explains the approach.
VeryHidden depends on access to the VBA workflow. Check it in the Excel edition and deployment environment where the workbook will be maintained; the cited documentation does not establish compatibility for every platform, file format, macro policy, or third-party spreadsheet application.

Make the backend maintainable
- Give the sheet a functional name, such as
Backend,LookupData, orConfig. - Leave a maintainer note that says what the sheet contains and how to restore it, especially if it is VeryHidden.
- Keep at least one worksheet visible. Microsoft states that a workbook cannot have all its sheets hidden in its VeryHidden macro guidance.
- Do not put sensitive information on the sheet on the assumption that hiding it makes the information inaccessible.
