Keep people and pets away, watch from a safe distance, and leave an apparently healthy wombat alone. Do not chase it, enter its burrow, touch it, feed it, or try to catch it. If it appears injured, ill, orphaned, affected by mange, or a joey may be involved, contact a current local wildlife rescue or rehabilitation service and follow its instructions.
Wombats are wild animals. Tasmania’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment warns: “Wombats are wild animals and although they look cute and cuddly, they can bite and scratch severely, especially when injured, afraid or defending their territory.”
First, decide whether the wombat needs intervention
Most yard encounters are best handled by giving the animal space. Use this triage before doing anything else:

How do I help a wombat safely if I find one in my yard?
1. Create distance immediately
Move children indoors or behind a closed barrier. Bring dogs and other pets inside; if that is not possible, secure them where they cannot approach, bark at, or corner the wombat. Keep yourself several steps farther away than you think necessary and avoid surrounding the animal with people.
Do not approach for a photograph. A wombat that seems calm can defend itself if it feels blocked, frightened, or territorial. A frightened or injured animal is especially likely to bite or scratch. Stay where the animal can see a clear route away from you.
Ask visitors or neighbours not to gather around the fence. More people, noise, and movement can turn a quiet visit into a defensive encounter. If the wombat is near a gate or path, use another route rather than trying to make it move. Do not attempt to herd it toward a road, shed, or burrow.
2. Watch without pursuing
From a safe place, note whether the wombat is walking normally, alert, and able to move away. Do not follow it into vegetation or a burrow. Do not shine lights at it, prod it, make noises to drive it out, or attempt to steer it toward a preferred exit.
If it is resting or simply passing through, the safest assistance is quiet coexistence. Leave gates and paths open only when doing so does not create a new hazard, and keep people and pets away until the animal has moved on. An animal that disappears from view has not necessarily left; it may be under a deck, in dense vegetation, or underground, so do not begin repairs or clearing immediately.
Do not stand over a burrow entrance to watch. Give the wombat room to emerge or leave on its own. A clear observation from a window or distant boundary is more useful than a close view that causes the animal to retreat.
3. Never offer food or water
Do not place food or water beside the wombat. Feeding can draw it closer to houses and people, encourage pets to investigate, and complicate an assessment by a rescuer. Guidance for injured or orphaned wombats specifically advises against feeding; an untrained resident should not try to provide a diet or home care.

When a wombat is injured, sick, or orphaned
Recognise signs that justify a call
Contact a wildlife rescue or rehabilitation provider if you see bleeding, a visible wound, an animal that cannot stand or walk normally, severe weakness, entanglement, repeated collapse, or behaviour that strongly suggests illness. An orphaned-looking young wombat also needs expert assessment. You do not need to diagnose the cause before calling.
A wombat beside a road, fence, drain, building, or other hazard may need urgent advice even if you cannot see an injury. Report the location and the immediate danger rather than trying to move the animal yourself. If the animal is hidden, tell the service exactly where it was last seen and whether you can observe it without approaching.

Describe what you can see rather than attempting a closer inspection. Give the service the suburb or nearest landmark, whether the animal is in a yard, on a road, or near a structure, and whether people, dogs, traffic, or another immediate hazard are present.
What to do while waiting for advice
- Keep the area quiet and prevent children, pets, and onlookers from approaching.
- Maintain a clear escape route unless the animal is already trapped; do not corner it.
- Observe from a distance so you can update the rescuer if the animal moves.
- Follow the provider’s directions exactly, including whether they want you to stay nearby or leave the area.
- Keep gates, vehicles, tools, and machinery away from the animal’s path.
Do not apply antiseptic, pain medicine, parasite treatment, bandages, or other products. Do not place the wombat in a box, vehicle, shed, bathtub, or spare room. Capturing or transporting a strong wild animal can injure you and the animal and may interfere with professional assessment.
Do not ask an untrained friend to “hold it still” while you inspect a wound. A rescue provider may decide that a trained team, veterinary assistance, or a particular approach is needed. Your role is to keep the scene safe and provide accurate information.
Why professional direction matters
Tasmanian guidance directs members of the public to a rescue and rehabilitation provider and says not to attempt care themselves. The NSW “Code of practice for injured, sick and orphaned wombats,” fourth edition, dated June 25, 2026, is written for authorised rescuers and rehabilitators. It is not a homeowner’s handling manual. Professional rescuers have the training, permissions, equipment, and release-planning knowledge required for intervention.
The NSW code and its separate initial-treatment guidance describe professional work, not a checklist for residents. Do not infer that because a technique appears in a government document you are authorised or equipped to perform it. Wait for the local service to explain whether you should stay, monitor from a distance, or leave the site.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf mange or another skin disease is suspected
Sarcoptic mange can produce conspicuous skin changes, but a resident should not try to confirm the diagnosis by touching the animal. WomSAT advises that sarcoptic mange can affect people and says to contact local wildlife rescue for assistance or advice.
- Keep people and pets well away from the wombat and anything it may be rubbing against.
- Do not catch, restrain, wash, medicate, or apply a mange treatment.
- Call a current local wildlife rescue service and describe the visible skin changes, location, and the animal’s movement.
- Follow the rescuer’s hygiene and access instructions.
Do not leave medication, food, or improvised treatment outside. The appropriate treatment, if any, must be selected and delivered by people authorised to handle wildlife. Avoid touching objects merely because the wombat has been near them; ask the service what precautions are appropriate for your situation.
If a joey may be involved
A pouch or nearby young animal changes the situation, but it does not make hands-on help safer. A joey may be visible because a mother is moving, resting, injured, or being disturbed. WomSAT’s advice is explicit: do not remove a joey from a pouch before obtaining expert advice.
Stay back and call local wildlife rescue. Tell the provider whether the joey is in the pouch, on the ground, alone, or near an adult, and whether the adult appears injured. Do not pull at the pouch, pick up the joey, carry it indoors, or attempt to reunite animals without instructions. Keep dogs and children away while you wait.

Do not assume that a joey seen without an obvious adult has been abandoned. Note the time, exact place, and what the adult was doing if you saw one. A distant photo may be useful only when it can be taken without approaching, delaying the call, or attracting a crowd.

Burrows, fences, gardens, and building conflicts
Never pursue a wombat underground
Entering or reaching into a burrow can put you within striking distance and can trap the animal. Do not send a person, dog, tool, hose, smoke, or object into the entrance. Do not stand over the opening to take a photograph.
Keep children away from the opening and prevent pets from investigating. Do not pour water or any substance into a burrow. If a wombat retreats underground, report the location to the wildlife authority if there is a safety or construction concern, and wait for jurisdiction-specific advice.
Do not obstruct an active burrow
Do not fill, cover, collapse, fence off, poison, or otherwise destroy a burrow as an improvised solution. NSW guidance warns that destroying an active burrow can bury wombats alive. Before any work near a burrow, obtain advice from the relevant wildlife authority and a qualified local professional.
An apparently empty entrance is not proof that a burrow is inactive. NSW guidance describes ways authorised people can confirm inactivity before work; those checks are not a reason for a resident to dig, probe, or seal an entrance. Do not move soil, install barriers across the opening, or begin excavation while waiting for an answer.
Check the law where you live
Wildlife and burrow protections are jurisdiction-specific. NSW guidance states that trapping and relocating wombats are not permitted there. South Australia separately describes legal protection for wombat burrows and specified exceptions. These examples cannot be treated as one Australia-wide rule.
If a burrow affects a foundation, driveway, drainage line, fence, road, or planned construction, pause the work and contact your state or territory wildlife authority. Explain the exact location and proposed activity, and ask what assessment, permission, buffer, or specialist involvement is required. Do not rely on advice from a different state.
Protection can apply even when the burrow is on private land. The fact that a wombat is inconvenient, or that a repair is planned, does not by itself authorise trapping, relocation, filling, or destruction. Obtain current local advice before hiring contractors or moving equipment into the area.
A safe call to wildlife rescue
Prepare concise information so the provider can decide whether to attend and what precautions are needed:
- Location: street, suburb, nearest landmark, and whether access is through a gate or private property.
- Condition: normal movement, bleeding, wound, weakness, entanglement, skin changes, or suspected orphaning.
- Position: open yard, under a deck, beside a road, inside a fence line, or at a burrow entrance.
- Hazards: dogs, traffic, people, machinery, water, aggressive animals, or unstable ground.
- Joey details: whether one is visible, where it is, and whether an adult is present.
- Your distance: explain that you have not touched, fed, chased, or attempted to capture the wombat.
Also tell the provider whether the wombat can leave freely, whether it has entered a confined area, and whether its position has changed since you first noticed it. If you are calling from a shared property, identify who can provide access. These details help the service plan without requiring you to approach.
A photo or short video can help only if taken from a safe distance without delaying the call or attracting people. Never move closer to obtain a clearer image. Do not post the location publicly while the animal is present; a crowd can increase stress and create additional hazards.

Common well-intentioned actions that can make things worse
“It is in my yard, so I should relocate it.”
Presence alone is not evidence of an emergency. Chasing a healthy wombat can drive it into a dangerous corner or burrow. Leave it space and allow it to move on.
Recommended Free Tools
“I can pick it up quickly.”
Do not attempt it. Wombats can bite and scratch severely, particularly when injured, afraid, or defending territory. A capture attempt can also worsen an unseen injury.
“I should seal the hole so it cannot return.”
Do not block or destroy an active burrow. Legal requirements differ by jurisdiction, and an animal may be underground even when you cannot see it.
“A little food will keep it calm.”
Do not feed it. Food can encourage close contact and is not a substitute for professional care.
“I can treat mange with a product from home.”
Do not touch or medicate a suspected mange case. Call wildlife rescue and follow its advice.
“The joey is alone, so it must be abandoned.”
Do not remove a joey from a pouch or nearby area before receiving expert instructions. Report what you see and let a qualified rescuer decide the next step.
“A government rescue document tells me exactly how to do this.”
Professional codes are written for authorised rescuers and rehabilitators. They do not grant a householder permission, training, or equipment to capture, treat, transport, or raise a wombat.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. After the wombat leaves
Keep pets away from the route and burrow area until you are confident the animal has gone. Do not immediately repair, fill, or landscape around a suspected burrow. If the encounter involved injury, mange, a joey, or a conflict with infrastructure, tell the wildlife provider what happened and ask whether follow-up monitoring or a site visit is appropriate.
Check the yard for hazards only after the animal has left and without disturbing a burrow. Secure dogs, close unsafe gates, and postpone noisy work. If a fence, drain, road, or building remains a risk, document the issue from a distance and seek local authority advice rather than improvising a barrier.

What the official guidance establishes
Tasmania’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment guidance covers coexistence, the risk of severe bites and scratches, avoiding pursuit into burrows, and referral of injured or orphaned animals. NSW guidance covers living with wombats, burrow risks, state protections, and relocation restrictions. WomSAT’s frequently asked questions cover mange, injured wombats, and joey handling. The NSW fourth-edition code dated June 25, 2026 sets professional standards for authorised rescuers and rehabilitators. South Australia’s environment department explains that burrow protections and exceptions are state-specific. The Wombat Protection Society of Australia’s rescue-contact guidance also advises against feeding injured or orphaned wombats. Because these authorities address different jurisdictions and roles, always use the rule that applies where you are and follow the current local service’s instructions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I leave a healthy wombat alone in my yard?
Usually, yes. Keep children and pets away, observe from a safe distance, and allow the wombat to leave without chasing, feeding, touching, or photographing it up close.
Can I move a wombat away from my house or road?
Do not trap, capture, or relocate it yourself. Call the local wildlife authority or rescue provider for advice, because rules differ by jurisdiction and NSW guidance says trapping and relocation are not permitted there.
What should I do if a wombat looks injured?
Keep everyone back and call a current local wildlife rescue or rehabilitation provider. Describe the location, visible condition, and hazards. Do not treat, feed, box, transport, or handle the animal unless a professional directs you.
Is it safe to touch a wombat with mange?
No. WomSAT warns that sarcoptic mange can affect people. Do not touch, catch, wash, or medicate the wombat; contact local wildlife rescue for instructions.
What if I can see a wombat joey?
Do not remove a joey from a pouch or pick up a young animal before obtaining expert advice. Keep pets and children away and tell wildlife rescue whether the joey is in the pouch, on the ground, alone, or with an adult.
Can I fill in a wombat burrow on my property?
Do not fill, block, damage, or destroy it as a DIY solution. NSW guidance warns active-burrow destruction can bury wombats alive, and South Australian protections illustrate that laws vary. Check with your state or territory authority before any work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat information should I give the rescue service?
Provide the street or nearest landmark, the wombat’s condition and position, hazards such as dogs or traffic, whether a joey is present, and whether you have avoided touching, feeding, chasing, or capturing it.
Can I use a household mange treatment or antiseptic?
No. Do not apply medicines, parasite products, antiseptic, bandages, or food. Treatment and handling should be directed by authorised wildlife professionals.
The Bottom Line
Give a healthy wombat space and let it leave. Keep children and pets away, never chase it into a burrow, and do not feed, touch, capture, treat, or relocate it. For injury, illness, mange, a possible joey, or a burrow and infrastructure conflict, contact the current local wildlife authority or rescue service and follow its directions. State rules differ, so do not block or destroy a burrow without jurisdiction-specific advice.
