Teach students to treat an AI answer as a draft list of claims, not an authority. A fluent response can contain false facts, invented citations, one-sided framing, or important omissions. The dependable routine is to isolate each checkable claim, verify it with independent and authoritative evidence, inspect every citation, look for missing perspectives, and record what the evidence actually establishes.
This approach follows information-literacy principles from the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) and UNESCO guidance on generative AI. It does not assume that a confident tone, a polished paragraph, or a citation automatically makes an answer trustworthy.
What students should understand before checking an AI answer
Generative AI predicts and assembles language; it does not guarantee that each sentence is true. It may combine accurate details with a wrong date, confuse two people with similar names, invent a quotation, or describe a real source that does not support the claim. The error can sound especially convincing because the prose is coherent.
UNESCO’s guidance states: “Learners, teachers and researchers should never accept the information provided by the GenAI at face value and should always critically assess it.” Present that sentence as guidance, not as a promise that every answer is wrong. Students still need to decide which statements are supported, contradicted, incomplete, or not yet verified.

Make the distinction between a claim and an interpretation explicit:
- Factual claim: “The treaty was signed in 1919.” It can be checked against records.
- Numerical claim: “The program reduced costs by 20 percent.” It requires the original study, its population, method, and date.
- Causal claim: “The policy caused enrollment to fall.” Correlation, timing, and alternative explanations must be examined.
- Historical or biographical claim: “The inventor worked in that laboratory.” Students should identify the person, place, and period precisely.
- Interpretation or opinion: “The decision was unfair.” Evidence can inform the judgment, but it is not verified in the same way as a date.
- Recommendation: “Schools should adopt this tool.” Students must ask whose goals, risks, and constraints the recommendation assumes.
Students do not have to fact-check every connective phrase. They should prioritize statements that would change the answer’s conclusion, affect a person’s reputation or safety, contain a number, or could be used as evidence in an assignment.
A five-stage classroom routine
Use the same sequence whether the answer concerns science, literature, civics, health, or technology. Students can work individually, in pairs, or in a librarian-led source lab.

1. Mark the claims
Give students an AI response in its original form. Ask them to underline factual, numerical, causal, and historical assertions. In a second color, mark recommendations and interpretations. Split a long sentence into separate claims when it contains multiple assertions. For example, “The 2010 law created the agency, cut emissions, and was supported by most voters” contains at least three claims requiring different evidence.
Have students copy each claim into a verification table rather than trying to evaluate the whole paragraph by impression. This prevents a persuasive introduction from making unsupported details seem reliable.
2. Check one claim at a time
For each claim, search for the original record or an authoritative source that directly addresses it. Depending on the topic, that may be a government document, court decision, university publication, professional association, museum archive, dataset, or peer-reviewed article. A search-result snippet is a lead, not proof.
Students should compare at least two independent sources when the claim is consequential or disputed. Independence matters: two pages that repeat the same press release are not two separate confirmations. Ask:

- Does the source address the exact person, place, period, population, and definition in the AI wording?
- Is the source qualified to make this claim, and can its evidence or method be inspected?
- Is it current enough for the question? A historical fact may rely on an older document, while a medical or software claim may change quickly.
- Does the evidence support the strength of the wording, or only a narrower conclusion?
- Could the source have a financial, political, institutional, or personal interest that affects its presentation?
These checks reflect ACRL evaluation dimensions: accuracy, validity, relevance, authority, timeliness, point of view, and bias.
3. Audit every citation
When an AI answer includes a footnote, link, book, article, or quotation, treat the citation itself as another claim. Open it rather than assuming it exists. Record the title, author or issuing body, publication date, and stable location. Then find the passage, table, or data that supposedly supports the sentence.
A citation can fail in several ways:
- The item does not exist or the URL leads nowhere.
- The title exists, but the author, date, or publication details are wrong.
- The source discusses the subject but does not contain the quoted fact.
- The source supports a limited finding, while the AI presents it as universal or causal.
- The AI has combined details from several sources and attached one citation to all of them.
If a source cannot be located or does not support the wording, label the claim not yet verified. Do not repair the citation by guessing what the AI “must have meant.” Save the source and the relevant passage in the student’s notes so another reader can reproduce the check.
4. Run a perspective and omission check
Bias is not limited to insulting or openly prejudiced language. It can appear in the evidence selected, the roles assigned to groups, the default example, the way a dispute is framed, or the knowledge left out. AI systems can reproduce dominant patterns in their training material, producing stereotyped or homogenized descriptions and underrepresenting minority perspectives.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAsk students:
- Who is quoted, studied, described, or treated as the normal case?
- Whose experiences, language, evidence, or historical account are absent?
- Does the response describe one institution’s view as if it were neutral?
- Are affected people represented as decision-makers, experts, subjects, or problems?
- Did the prompt steer the answer toward a particular country, discipline, ideology, or demographic?
- Would an authoritative source from an underrepresented community change the context or conclusion?
Students should describe observable gaps, not claim that a quick prompt reveals the model’s internal training data or proves that an answer is neutral. Compare the answer with sources chosen for expertise and representation, then explain what remains unknown.
5. Write an evidence-based verdict
Require a short verdict for each claim. Use four practical labels:
| Label | When to use it | What the student must show |
|---|---|---|
| Supported | Reliable evidence matches the claim’s wording and scope. | The source, date, and relevant passage or data. |
| Contradicted | Authoritative evidence conflicts with the claim. | The conflicting evidence and an explanation of the difference. |
| Incomplete | The claim has a true element but omits a material qualification, group, date, or counter-evidence. | What is missing and why it changes interpretation. |
| Not yet verified | No suitable evidence has been found, a citation is unusable, or the question remains too vague. | The searches attempted and the uncertainty that remains. |
These labels are a classroom synthesis of ACRL and UNESCO evaluation principles, not a proprietary UNESCO or ACRL scoring system. A careful “not yet verified” is a stronger academic answer than an unsupported correction.

How to teach source quality without reducing it to a single ranking
Students often ask whether a source is “good” or “bad.” Replace that binary with a fit-for-purpose test. A national archive may be authoritative for a primary document but not for interpreting a medical trial. A recent news report may be useful for what happened yesterday but not for a definitive estimate of long-term effects.

| Evaluation axis | Questions to ask | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Authority and expertise | Who produced it? What qualifications, institution, or accountability does that author have? | Anonymous expertise claims, copied biographies, or an organization with no verifiable record. |
| Accuracy and validity | Can the evidence, method, data, or primary record be inspected? Do other independent sources agree? | Precise claims with no method, evidence, or way to reproduce them. |
| Relevance | Does it answer this exact question, population, location, and time period? | A source about a different country, age group, product version, or historical event. |
| Currency | When was it published or updated, and does the topic change rapidly? | Old guidance presented as current, or a current page that silently preserves obsolete data. |
| Point of view and bias | What purpose, audience, funding, or institutional position shapes the selection and language? | Only one side is represented, affected people are absent, or uncertainty is hidden. |
| Transparency | Are definitions, sources, limitations, and corrections visible? | Uncheckable references, screenshots without context, or claims that cannot be traced. |
Teach students to combine the axes. A source can be authoritative but irrelevant to the precise claim, current but methodologically weak, or highly relevant yet openly partisan. The decision is whether it is suitable evidence for this statement and whether another source is needed.
A worked example students can annotate
Suppose an AI answer says: “A 2022 city policy cut traffic injuries by 30 percent, was praised by residents, and was based on a university study.” Ask students to separate it into four claims:
- The policy was adopted by the city in 2022.
- Traffic injuries fell by 30 percent.
- Residents praised the policy.
- A university study provided its basis.
The first may be checked in a city ordinance or council record. The second requires the definition of “injuries,” the baseline period, the affected roads, and the method used to calculate 30 percent. Students should look for seasonality, enforcement changes, and whether the figure is a before-and-after association rather than a demonstrated causal effect. The third requires a representative survey or documented public comments, not a handful of quotations. The fourth requires the study’s title, authors, date, and a comparison between its recommendation and the policy actually enacted.
If the ordinance confirms the date, a transportation dataset reports a smaller reduction, and no survey supports the praise claim, the table might read: first claim supported; second contradicted or incomplete depending on definitions; third not yet verified; fourth supported only if the study is real and its findings match the wording. The student should preserve those distinctions instead of assigning one verdict to the entire paragraph.

Age-appropriate ways to build the routine
Primary and lower-secondary students
Use short answers with visible, checkable statements. Ask students to circle words such as “all,” “never,” “causes,” and exact numbers. Provide a small set of teacher-selected sources and let students match claims to evidence. Focus on noticing that a source must exist and actually say what the answer claims.
Older secondary students
Introduce independent corroboration, primary versus secondary sources, date and context checks, and the difference between correlation and causation. Have students locate a source themselves, annotate the supporting passage, and identify one limitation or omitted perspective.

College and adult learners
Require method and scope analysis. Students can compare a scholarly article, an institutional report, a news account, and a community or lived-experience source. Ask them to explain how authority, relevance, transparency, and point of view interact rather than ranking sources by prestige alone.
UNESCO’s 2024 AI competency framework describes 12 competencies across four dimensions and three progression levels—understand, apply, and create. Use that progression as a planning aid: first teach what AI output and evidence are; then require students to apply verification; finally ask them to create a sourced response that discloses uncertainty and perspective. Adjust examples, reading load, account requirements, and discussion expectations to students’ ages and abilities.
Student worksheet and teacher prompts
A one-page worksheet makes the process visible and reduces the temptation to accept a paragraph as a single unit of truth. Include these fields:
- AI claim: Copy the exact sentence and split it if necessary.
- Claim type: Fact, number, cause, interpretation, recommendation, or quotation.
- Search plan: List the key names, dates, terms, and the kind of primary or authoritative source sought.
- Source record: Author or issuing body, title, date, publication, and link or catalog information.
- Evidence: Quote or describe the exact passage, table, or data that bears on the claim.
- Quality notes: Authority, relevance, currency, method, transparency, and point of view.
- Missing perspective: Whose experience or evidence is not represented?
- Verdict and confidence: Supported, contradicted, incomplete, or not yet verified, with a reason.
Useful teacher prompts include: “What would have to be true for this sentence to be correct?” “Which word makes the claim broader than the source?” “Can you find the original document?” “Is your second source genuinely independent?” “Who is affected but not quoted?” and “What would you need to know before making a stronger conclusion?”

Trusting fluency
Problem: Students equate clear prose with accuracy. Correction: Give them a polished answer containing one subtle error and ask them to identify which sentence requires evidence first. Discuss why confidence is a presentation feature, not a verification result.
Checking only the first search result
Problem: A prominent page is treated as independent confirmation. Correction: Require the source’s author, purpose, date, and evidence, then compare it with a separately produced source.

Counting repeated pages as corroboration
Problem: Several sites repeat the same press release or AI-generated text. Correction: Trace the claim back to its earliest accessible record and identify whether later pages add independent reporting or merely repetition.
Calling an answer biased without showing how
Problem: “Biased” becomes an unsupported label. Correction: Name the framing, omitted group, selective evidence, stereotype, or default assumption, and provide a source or perspective that exposes the gap.
Overcorrecting an uncertainty
Problem: Students replace an unverified claim with a different guess. Correction: Preserve uncertainty and state what evidence would resolve it. Verification is not a contest to produce a definite sentence at any cost.
Privacy, safety, and responsible classroom use
Do not require students to paste personal records, identifiable information, unpublished work, health details, or sensitive disclosures into a generative-AI system merely to practice checking answers. Follow school or library policy and the tool’s current terms. Explain whether an account is required, what data may be retained, and which alternatives—such as a teacher-provided transcript—are available.
For health, legal, financial, safeguarding, or crisis topics, verification is not a substitute for qualified professional help. Students should learn to identify high-stakes claims and escalate them to an appropriate adult or authoritative service rather than relying on an AI answer or an improvised classroom verdict.
What this routine can—and cannot—establish
The routine teaches a transferable habit: inspect claims, evidence, sources, perspective, and uncertainty. UNESCO and ACRL materials support these goals and principles. They do not establish that one exact worksheet, prompt, lesson length, or group format produces the largest measured learning gain. Avoid promising a particular score improvement or treating the routine as a validated intervention.
A successful student response is therefore not one that “catches” a fixed number of errors. It is one that makes a reproducible judgment: the claim, the evidence consulted, the source’s limits, the perspectives included or missing, and the uncertainty that remains. That is the standard to apply when students use AI for brainstorming, tutoring, research planning, or drafting.
