You can help protect orangutans in Borneo by directing money, time, and attention to habitat protection, forest restoration, patrols, fire prevention, community partnerships, and conflict mitigation. Donate or fundraise for clearly identified field work, volunteer only with responsible programs, share verified conservation information, and assess an organization’s geography, project evidence, community role, and financial reporting before you commit. No single shopping choice replaces sustained, locally led habitat work.
Why protecting Borneo’s forest is the central task
Orangutans depend on large, connected areas of tropical forest for food, nesting sites, and movement. The Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Foundation identifies habitat loss, degradation, and fragmentation as leading causes of population decline. A forest can remain on a map yet become unusable when roads, plantations, fires, drainage, or isolated clearings divide it into small pieces.
Effective conservation therefore combines more than rescuing individual animals. It can include securing forest, restoring damaged peatland and lowland areas, preventing and suppressing fires, patrolling boundaries, researching populations, working with villages, and reducing dangerous encounters between people and orangutans. The right contribution depends on which of these activities you want to support and where the work occurs.

Borneo includes Indonesian, Malaysian, and Bruneian territories. The BOS Foundation describes its own operations with local communities and the Indonesian government in Central and East Kalimantan, in Indonesian Borneo. That geographic description should not be silently expanded to all of Borneo or to Malaysian Borneo.

Island-wide conservation programs may work across several countries. For example, the Orangutan SAFE 2023–2025 plan named partners in Borneo and Sumatra, so its list is not a current map of every Bornean project. Always check a project’s present location, permit arrangements, and reporting period before donating or travelling.
Choose the contribution that fits your situation
There is no published, comparable cost-effectiveness ranking for the options below. Treat them as different ways to provide useful support rather than as a contest with one universal winner.
| Contribution | What it can support | Questions to answer first |
|---|---|---|
| Direct donation | Habitat protection, restoration, patrols, fire management, rescue, rehabilitation, research, or community programs | Is the project and its geography clearly described? Can you see recent financial and activity reports? |
| Fundraising | A larger one-time gift assembled through a school, workplace, club, or community | Will the campaign name a recipient, explain its use of funds, and report the final amount? |
| Volunteering | Specialist skills, administrative help, education, or approved field assistance | What qualifications, supervision, safeguarding, costs, and animal-contact rules apply? |
| School engagement | Student learning, a local fundraiser, and longer-term public support | Does the activity teach habitat and community issues rather than reducing conservation to animal encounters? |
| Awareness and advocacy | Accurate sharing of alerts, policy discussions, and public support for conservation | Is the information from a verifiable organization or agency, and is the requested action specific? |
| Consumer or corporate engagement | Better land-management practices and pressure for companies to reduce ecological harm | What measurable policy, site, timeline, and reporting does the company provide? |
Donate to identifiable habitat and community work
Do a short due-diligence check
- Locate the work. Look for a named reserve, landscape, district, or island region. “Protect orangutans” without a place or activity is too vague for an informed decision.
- Identify the intervention. Check whether the appeal funds patrols, restoration, fire response, forest acquisition or protection, research, conflict mitigation, rescue, rehabilitation, education, or another defined activity.
- Read the reporting trail. Prefer organizations that publish current project updates, financial statements, and explanations of results and setbacks. A polished story is not a substitute for documentation.
- Understand restrictions. Confirm whether your gift is unrestricted or reserved for a particular project, and whether the organization can redirect it if conditions change.
- Check payment and tax details. Use the organization’s official donation page, verify the legal recipient and currency, and save the receipt. Tax deductibility varies by your country and the receiving entity.
What the BOS Foundation publicly describes
The BOS Foundation’s work FAQ describes collaboration with local populations and the Indonesian government in Central and East Kalimantan. It lists donations, volunteering, fundraising, school engagement, and sharing updates as ways to help. Its ecosystem work includes forest protection and restoration, fire management, patrols, community involvement, and efforts to mitigate human–orangutan conflict.
The foundation reports that it has improved the lives of more than 1,000 orangutans through rescue, rehabilitation, release, translocation, and long-term care; 497 releases since 2012; 27 recorded wild-born babies among those released; and protection or rehabilitation of more than 450,000 hectares of rainforest. These are figures reported by the organization on a page without a visible publication year, not independently audited outcome estimates. Recheck the page for updates and read the accompanying methods before treating them as current performance measures.
The same FAQ says the foundation’s financial reports are externally audited and that current and past reports are available through its resources menu. “Audited” describes the financial review; it does not by itself prove that every ecological outcome was independently verified.

Other examples to investigate
The Orangutan Conservancy homepage describes support for wild research, capacity building, education, conservation science, and on-the-ground efforts in Borneo and Sumatra. The Orangutan Project’s habitat program describes support for patrol teams, guard posts, and restoration. These are examples for comparison, not a ranking or endorsement. Confirm each group’s current projects, legal recipient, geographic scope, reporting, and donation terms directly.
Fundraise through a school, workplace, or community
Fundraising can turn a small personal contribution into a documented grant while giving other people a concrete way to learn about Borneo. Keep the campaign specific and accountable.
- Choose one recipient and one purpose. State the organization, the landscape or program if named, and whether the gift is unrestricted.
- Set a realistic target and deadline. Explain how the target was chosen; do not imply that reaching it will solve a population-wide problem.
- Use verified educational material. Link to the recipient’s official habitat, community, or financial information rather than copying unsourced animal statistics.
- Make collection transparent. Use the recipient’s own fundraising tools when possible. If collecting locally, record gross receipts, fees, expenses, and the amount transferred.
- Report the outcome. Tell supporters the final amount, transfer date, recipient, and any restrictions. Keep donor data private and obtain permission before publishing names or photographs.
A school can combine a lesson on forest fragmentation with a student-designed campaign, a talk from a qualified conservation educator, or a letter-writing project. Avoid activities that promise that a symbolic “adoption” or a single purchase directly represents a specific animal unless the organization explains exactly what the payment funds.
Volunteer without creating extra pressure on animals or communities
Volunteering is appropriate only when the host organization has a defined role, supervision, safeguarding procedures, and a reason that a volunteer is preferable to a trained local hire. Field conservation may require specialist skills in ecology, veterinary care, GIS, communications, construction, fundraising, or translation; other programs may need remote administrative help.
Questions to ask before accepting a placement
- What tasks will you perform, and what training or credentials are required?
- Who supervises the work, and how are safety, insurance, accommodation, transport, and emergency care handled?
- What are the full fees, what do they cover, and which costs go to the conservation organization?
- What rules prevent disease transmission, stress, habituation, or unsafe contact with orangutans?
- How are local staff, village leaders, and Indonesian or Malaysian authorities involved?
- What report will volunteers receive about results, problems, and the use of their payment?
Be cautious of programs centered on selfies, unrestricted touching, feeding, or guaranteed close encounters. A responsible placement should be able to explain why your presence helps the stated work and how animal welfare takes precedence over a visitor’s experience. If those answers are unclear, a donation or locally organized fundraiser may be the more responsible choice.

Share accurate information and take part in advocacy
Sharing a verified project update can bring supporters to a legitimate program, but viral claims can also misdirect money. Before reposting, check the publisher, date, location, and requested action. Distinguish a rescue story from a habitat-protection result, and do not present an organization’s estimate as a government census or independent study.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUseful advocacy is concrete: ask a company to publish the locations and safeguards for its land holdings; ask a school or employer to fund a named project; or contact elected officials about enforcement, protected areas, fire prevention, and community rights in the relevant jurisdiction. Keep Indonesian Borneo and Malaysian Borneo distinct when an action concerns a particular law or agency.
When you share a donation appeal, include the official link, the appeal’s date, and what the funds are intended to do. Remove expired appeals and correct errors publicly rather than allowing an outdated target or partnership to circulate.
Make consumer and corporate choices with realistic expectations
A blanket instruction to “avoid palm oil” does not describe the whole conservation problem. The BOS Foundation says it works with companies in oil palm, timber, and other sectors on land-management practices intended to protect biodiversity and mitigate conflict. That approach recognizes that outcomes depend on where production occurs, how land is managed, whether forests and peatlands are protected, and whether rules are enforced.
For an individual purchase, you usually cannot prove that one product guarantees habitat protection. Instead, look for a company’s public commitments, mapped supply chain or operating sites, no-clearing and fire policies, grievance process, community engagement, and time-bound progress reports. Treat those claims as corporate evidence to examine, not as a replacement for direct conservation support.

If you work in procurement or sustainability, ask suppliers for site-level information and independent assurance where available. Compare the answer with the conservation goals of the landscape concerned. A company program can complement donations to field organizations, but it should not be counted as the same type of intervention.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What effective habitat work looks like on the ground
The BOS Foundation’s ecosystem conservation description illustrates the range of activities that may sit under “habitat protection.” Use these categories when reading a project budget or annual report.
Protection and patrols
Patrol teams can detect illegal clearing, fires, encroachment, or signs of wildlife crime. Look for the area covered, patrol frequency, staffing, partnerships with authorities, incidents recorded, and how threats were addressed—not just the number of patrols.
Restoration and rewetting
Restoration can include native-tree planting, assisted natural regeneration, invasive-species control, and blocking drainage canals in damaged peatland. A credible report should state the area, survival or maintenance plan, fire risk, and how local people participate. Planting a headline number of seedlings is not the same as restoring a functioning forest.

Fire management
Prevention, early detection, equipment, trained response teams, and landscape-level coordination can reduce catastrophic fires. Ask whether a program works before, during, and after the fire season and how it addresses the causes of repeated burning.

Community partnerships and conflict mitigation
People living near forests need safe, workable options when orangutans enter farms or settlements. Projects may support local monitoring, rapid response, livelihood planning, education, and agreements over land use. Reports should identify who makes decisions, how consent is obtained, and what happens when an intervention fails.
Rescue, rehabilitation, and release
Rescue and rehabilitation are vital when individual orangutans are injured, orphaned, or displaced, but they do not replace protection of the forest to which released animals may return. Evaluate animal-care standards alongside release-site security, post-release monitoring, and measures that reduce the chance of repeated conflict.
The BOS Foundation estimates that about 70% of wild orangutans in Borneo live outside protected areas. That is an organization’s estimate, not a dated island-wide census in the material available here; use it as a reason to examine community and working-landscape programs, not as a precise current population statistic.

Understand the named SAFE partners and the date limit
The Orangutan SAFE 2023–2025 plan (PDF) named six in-situ field partners: BOS Foundation, Ape Malaysia, HUTAN, Borneo Nature Foundation, Gunung Palung Orangutan Conservation Program, and Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme. The plan period ended in 2025. It is evidence of historical priorities and partnerships, not confirmation that every organization remains a partner or that every listed project is currently funded.
If you use the plan to identify a project, open the organization’s current website, look for a post-2025 update, and confirm the donation recipient and location. Do not combine the plan’s time-bounded funding information with undated organizational totals to create a current island-wide conclusion.
Build a practical 30-day action plan
- Day 1–3: Choose your focus. Decide whether you want to support habitat, community work, animal care, research, education, or a combination. Set a monthly or one-time amount you can sustain.
- Day 4–7: Shortlist two or three organizations. Record each group’s geography, project type, latest report date, financial information, and donation restrictions.
- Week 2: Verify before paying. Use official domains, confirm the legal recipient and currency, and ask unanswered questions by the contact method listed on the site.
- Week 3: Add one non-financial action. Organize a school or workplace fundraiser, volunteer remotely if a defined role exists, or share a dated action alert with its original source.
- Week 4: Review and document. Save receipts, note the project period, and schedule a check of the organization’s next report. If you raised money, publish the amount transferred and any fees.
Repeating a modest, well-documented action is generally more useful than making a one-time promise you cannot maintain. Reassess the project when its location, leadership, funding, or reporting changes.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming one product solves deforestation: examine land-management evidence and support direct field work separately.
- Treating an old partnership as current: check dates, especially for programs whose published period ended in 2025.
- Confusing rescue with habitat security: ask how animal care connects to protected release landscapes and conflict prevention.
- Ignoring geography: match the organization’s operating area to the Bornean country or province you intend to support.
- Sharing undated statistics: label organization-reported figures and avoid presenting them as independent population estimates.
- Choosing a volunteer trip for the experience alone: require a defined conservation role, welfare safeguards, and transparent costs.
- Sending money through an unverified intermediary: use the recipient’s official payment route and retain documentation.
- Measuring success only by activity counts: look for area condition, threat reduction, community outcomes, animal welfare, and lessons from failure.
Bottom line
The most dependable way to help Bornean orangutans is to support credible, locally engaged work that keeps forests connected and functioning: protection and patrols, restoration and fire management, community partnerships, conflict mitigation, and carefully governed animal care. Choose a contribution you can sustain, verify the project’s current geography and evidence, and keep consumer or corporate choices in perspective. Your action matters most when it strengthens long-term habitat security rather than promising a simple fix.
