Start with a calm, private conversation. Ask what your teenager saw, how it made them feel, and whether it is likely to appear again. Listen without blame, make clear they can come to you even when embarrassed, then work together to report or block harmful material and adjust the app’s settings. Keep checking in rather than treating one conversation or one setting as a complete solution.
If distress continues or begins to affect sleep, school, friendships, activities, or other daily responsibilities, involve a pediatrician or qualified mental-health professional. In the United States, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline provides free, confidential call, text, and chat support 24/7/365 for people experiencing emotional distress.
Begin with curiosity, not punishment
A teenager may hide upsetting content because they expect a parent to confiscate the phone, criticize their choices, or demand to see everything immediately. A defensive opening can end the conversation before you learn what happened. Use a steady tone and make the first goal understanding, not discipline.
Useful opening questions
- “What did you see?”
- “How did it make you feel?”
- “Would you like to tell me more about it?”
- “Do you think it might show up again?”
- “Is anyone sending this to you, tagging you, or asking you to respond?”
Give the teenager control over how much detail to describe. They do not have to show you graphic material for you to take their concern seriously. Ask whether they want help deciding what to do next, and pause long enough for a real answer.

Listen to the teenager’s interpretation
The same video, image, message, or comment can affect two teenagers differently. The American Psychological Association (APA) notes that age, temperament, neurodiversity, previous stress or trauma, and mental health can influence susceptibility. Do not assume that a strong reaction proves lasting psychological harm, or that a quiet reaction means the experience had no effect.
Reflect what you hear without endorsing harmful claims: “That sounds frightening,” “I can see why that stayed with you,” or “You are not in trouble for telling me.” Avoid minimizing the experience with statements such as “It was only a video” or “Just ignore it.” The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises that teens should know they can bring online experiences to a caregiver even when they feel embarrassed or worried.
Ask about immediate feelings and pressure
Find out whether the material caused fear, disgust, sadness, anger, confusion, or an urge to keep watching. Ask whether another person is pressuring them to view, share, recreate, or respond to it. If the content involves self-harm, suicide, violence, eating-disorder behavior, hate, or cyberbullying, say plainly that they can tell you more and that your priority is their safety, not punishment.
If a teenager says they may hurt themselves or someone else, or cannot stay safe, treat that as an urgent mental-health concern. In the United States, call or text 988 for a counselor; the service also offers online chat and states that it is free, confidential, and available 24/7/365. Outside the United States, use the appropriate crisis service for your country.
Identify what kind of exposure is happening
“Upsetting content” can mean a disturbing one-time recommendation, a stream of repeatedly suggested videos, direct messages from another person, or deliberate harassment. Clarifying the pattern determines the next step.
Content that depicts or encourages harm
Potentially harmful material may include violence, self-harm or suicide, harm to other people, disordered eating, hate, or cyberbullying. The APA recommends minimizing exposure to material that depicts or encourages harmful behavior and reporting it when it violates a platform’s rules.

Repeated recommendations
Ask whether the material keeps returning in the feed, search results, autoplay queue, or recommendations. Repetition can make a teen feel trapped even when no individual post is directed at them. Note the account, post, hashtag, or recommendation category without asking the teen to replay graphic material.

Targeted messages or harassment
If someone is sending the content, tagging the teenager, threatening them, or encouraging them to participate, preserve enough information to report the account and then block or restrict it as appropriate. The teenager should not have to negotiate with the sender or prove their feelings to the sender.
A single disturbing encounter
One exposure does not establish that a teenager has been harmed, and the available guidance does not show that all teenagers react alike. Still, a one-time event deserves a check-in, especially if the teenager keeps thinking about it, avoids normal activities, or asks to stop using the app.
A practical response plan
Use the following sequence during the first conversation and over the next several days. Adapt it to the teenager’s age, maturity, privacy needs, and the seriousness of the content.
- Listen before changing the phone. Let the teenager describe what happened and what they need. Explain that you will work on a plan together.
- Clarify whether exposure is continuing. Ask if the material is being recommended repeatedly or sent by a particular account. Identify whether another person is targeting the teenager.
- Report rule-breaking material. Use the platform’s built-in reporting option for posts, accounts, messages, or comments that depict or encourage harm, harassment, hate, or other prohibited behavior. Report from the teenager’s account when possible so the platform has the relevant context.
- Block, unfollow, mute, or restrict the source. Choose the least disruptive control that stops unwanted contact. Blocking is appropriate when a person is harassing or repeatedly sending harmful material; unfollowing or muting may be enough for an unwanted recommendation source.
- Review settings with the teenager present. Examine content filters, sensitive-content controls, time limits, monitoring options, and privacy or security settings. Explain what each setting does and why you are considering it.
- Agree on a short experiment. The teenager might pause video recommendations, take a brief break from the app, or switch to a more limited feed. Set a time to discuss whether the change helped rather than announcing an indefinite punishment.
- Follow up after the immediate reaction. Ask what they are thinking now, whether the material has reappeared, and whether sleep, school, friendships, activities, or mood have changed.
APA’s 2025 parent guidance recommends experimenting with brief breaks and discussing the effect, alongside healthier content choices and offline activities. A break is an option to test, not a universal prescription.
Use platform and device controls as a shared plan
Controls can reduce exposure, but they cannot guarantee that upsetting material will never appear. They work best when the teenager understands the purpose and knows which protections are being used.

| Control | What it addresses | How to use it responsibly | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Content filters and blockers | Reduces recommendations or searches involving sensitive material | Turn them on with the teenager; explain which categories are affected and how to report anything that gets through | Filters can miss material, over-block ordinary content, or fail when a new account or platform is used |
| Time limits | Sets boundaries for an app or device | Choose a schedule that protects sleep, school, activity, and family commitments; review whether the limit is realistic | A time limit does not change what appears during the allowed time |
| Monitoring tools | Shows or manages aspects of use, depending on the device or app | Tell the teenager what is monitored, why, and when the arrangement will be revisited | Secret or excessive monitoring can damage trust and may not reveal private distress |
| Privacy and security controls | Limits who can contact, tag, mention, or view the teenager | Review account visibility, message requests, tagging, blocking, and authentication options together | Privacy settings reduce contact but cannot control every public post or recommendation |
AAP guidance supports discussing controls openly and involving older teens in decisions. APA recommends balancing monitoring for early adolescents with privacy and gradually increasing autonomy as responsibility develops. The right arrangement may change as the teenager demonstrates that they can recognize harmful material, use reporting tools, and ask for help.
Set boundaries around sleep and offline life
Do not reduce the issue to a single daily screen-time number. APA says there is no one-size-fits-all rule for how much time teenagers should spend online. The more useful question is whether use is displacing essential parts of life.
APA’s 2023 Health Advisory on Social Media Use in Adolescence recommends at least eight hours of sleep each night. Treat that as a health recommendation, not a diagnostic cutoff. Also protect time for physical activity, schoolwork, friendships, family responsibilities, and interests away from the feed.

Instead of imposing a broad ban, connect boundaries to the problem you identified. For example, disable autoplay if videos keep escalating, place the phone outside the bedroom if late-night viewing is disrupting sleep, or pause a particular recommendation stream while leaving messaging available for supportive friends. Revisit the arrangement after the teenager has had a chance to observe its effect.
Keep talking after the first conversation
Disturbing content can continue to affect a teenager after the screen is closed. APA recommends helping teens interpret negative content and consider coping strategies. A follow-up conversation can ask:
- “What part of it keeps coming back to you?”
- “What do you think the creator wanted viewers to believe or do?”
- “Did anything you saw seem misleading, staged, or designed to provoke a reaction?”
- “What would make your feed feel safer this week?”
- “Would a break from video content or a different activity help you reset?”
Do not silently watch the same negative material with the teenager and then move on. APA cautions that adult silence after viewing can be interpreted as approval. Briefly state your concern, explain why the material may be harmful, and invite the teenager’s perspective.

Watch for changes in everyday functioning
A reaction is more concerning when it persists or interferes with ordinary life. None of the signs below diagnoses a mental-health condition by itself; they indicate that another check-in or professional conversation may be warranted.

| Continuing to use the platform despite wanting to stop | Ask what keeps drawing them back, adjust recommendations and access together, and seek additional support if they cannot manage it |
APA’s advisory specifically identifies interference with sleep, physical activity, school, relationships, or other daily roles as a warning sign. AAP guidance likewise encourages families to discuss concerns about social-media use or mental health with a pediatrician.

Pediatrician
A pediatrician can help assess sleep, mood, anxiety, stress, and other health concerns in the teenager’s wider context. Contact one when distress persists, functioning changes, or you are unsure whether what you are seeing requires a higher level of care.
Mental-health professional
APA advises considering a qualified mental-health professional when a caregiver suspects psychological harm or cannot manage the situation. Bring concrete observations: what type of content appeared, how often it returned, what settings were changed, how the teenager reacted, and which daily activities changed.

“They will not tell me what they saw.”
Do not turn disclosure into an interrogation. Say that they can share only the part they are comfortable describing and that you can still help with blocking, reporting, or a break. Offer another trusted adult, such as a school counselor, pediatrician, relative, or therapist, if speaking with you feels too difficult.

“The content keeps coming back after we blocked one account.”
Record the pattern without collecting graphic copies, report each relevant account or post, review recommendation and sensitive-content settings, and check whether the same material is entering through another platform or account. Ask the teenager whether a short break from that format would help.
“My teenager says monitoring is an invasion of privacy.”
Acknowledge the concern and distinguish between safety controls and reading every private conversation. State exactly what you will monitor, why it is necessary, who can see it, and when you will reassess. Increasing independence as the teenager demonstrates safe judgment is consistent with AAP and APA guidance.
“I am tempted to ban every app.”
A blanket ban may remove a source of harm, but it can also cut off supportive friends and make future disclosure less likely. Start with the specific exposure, the account or feature involved, and the effect on daily life. Use a broader restriction when narrower measures do not stop the harm or the teenager cannot safely manage access.
Avoid overclaiming what the evidence shows
APA’s 2023 advisory emphasizes that findings do not apply equally to all young people, causal findings are rare, and long-term outcomes are often unknown. A single exposure does not inevitably cause harm, and parental monitoring alone cannot prevent every upsetting post. The practical goal is informed support: listen, reduce repeat exposure, protect sleep and offline life, and obtain help when distress or impairment continues.
In a March 4, 2025 announcement of its parent guide, APA CEO Arthur C. Evans Jr., PhD, described adolescence as a stage in which teenagers may be especially sensitive to content involving violence, self-harming behaviors, or unrealistic body standards, with possible effects on mental health, relationships, and identity. He also said parents can help teenagers make thoughtful video choices while balancing online time with sleep and in-person connection. Those statements support a measured approach rather than assuming that every teenager will respond identically.
