Buy a Bitcoin put if you want a defined loss on the hedge itself. A long put gives you the right to sell the contract’s underlying at a chosen strike. If Bitcoin (or the referenced futures price) finishes below that strike at expiry, the put gains value; if it finishes above the strike, the option can expire worthless. Your maximum loss on the long option is the premium paid, plus fees and any financing or currency effects.
That cap applies only to the option position—not to your Bitcoin. You can still lose substantially on the coins you own, and a put may not match your holding if its contract size, underlying, settlement currency or expiry differs. A put spread lowers the upfront debit by selling a second, lower-strike put, but it also gives up protection below that lower strike.
What a premium-limited Bitcoin hedge does—and does not do
A long put caps the option buyer’s loss
Let K be the put strike, ST the relevant underlying price at expiry, and Q the number of underlying units represented by the contract. The put’s expiry payoff before costs is:

If the underlying finishes at or above the strike, the payoff is zero. The buyer loses the premium paid. If it finishes below the strike, the payoff grows as the underlying falls. The option’s net result is the payoff minus the premium, trading fees and any other carrying or currency costs. Educational material from Deribit describes the out-of-the-money put buyer’s loss as the premium.

The cap does not protect the entire Bitcoin position
Suppose you own one BTC and buy a put that covers exactly one BTC. The BTC remains exposed to every move in the spot market. The put offsets part of a decline only when its terms line up with that exposure. If the put expires out of the money, you lose its entire premium while still holding the coin. If it references a futures contract rather than spot BTC, the futures price can diverge from your spot holding, creating basis risk.
The correct statement is therefore: the long put’s loss is limited to its premium; the total portfolio’s loss is not.
How a protective Bitcoin put works
Illustrative example
The following numbers are hypothetical and are not a market quote. Assume a holder owns 1 BTC purchased when BTC was worth $60,000. The holder buys a put covering 1 BTC with a $55,000 strike and pays a $2,000 premium. Ignore fees, taxes, funding and currency conversion.
| BTC at expiry | Put payoff | Put net result after $2,000 premium | Value change on 1 BTC from $60,000 entry | Combined change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $70,000 | $0 | −$2,000 | +$10,000 | +$8,000 |
| $55,000 | $0 | −$2,000 | −$5,000 | −$7,000 |
| $40,000 | $15,000 | +$13,000 | −$20,000 | −$7,000 |
| $20,000 | $35,000 | +$33,000 | −$40,000 | −$7,000 |
The put begins producing intrinsic value below $55,000, but the $2,000 premium means the hedge does not break even by itself until the payoff exceeds that debit. In this simplified example, the combined position still loses $7,000 at $40,000 and at $20,000. The hedge reduces the decline; it does not make the portfolio loss equal to the premium.
Strike selection changes when protection begins
A strike below the current market price is commonly cheaper than a closer-to-the-money or above-market strike, all else equal, but it starts offsetting losses only below that lower level. A strike closer to the market generally responds sooner and usually costs more. No strike is universally appropriate: choose the level at which a decline becomes unacceptable, then check whether the premium fits your budget.

Expiry defines how long the hedge exists
Protection ends at expiry. If your holding period is longer, you must decide whether to sell the option, exercise or settle it according to its terms, and buy a later-dated option. Rolling creates a new premium, spread and execution decision; it is not an automatic continuation of the original hedge.
Put versus put spread
What changes when you sell the lower-strike put
A put spread combines two puts with the same expiry: buy the higher-strike put at K1 and sell the lower-strike put at K2, where K1 > K2. The premium received for the short leg reduces the net debit in suitable market conditions. In exchange, protection is capped below K2.

At expiry, the spread payoff per underlying unit is:
max(K1 − ST, 0) − max(K2 − ST, 0)
Its maximum payoff is K1 − K2 per unit. The spread’s net result is that payoff minus the net debit and costs. The short put is not a free discount: it is the leg that removes protection in the deepest declines.
Illustrative spread
Assume the same 1-BTC exposure. Buy a $55,000 put and sell a $45,000 put with the same expiry for a hypothetical net debit of $1,200.

| BTC at expiry | Spread payoff | Spread result after $1,200 debit | What the short leg does |
|---|---|---|---|
| $60,000 | $0 | −$1,200 | Both puts expire out of the money |
| $50,000 | $5,000 | +$3,800 | Only the $55,000 long put has intrinsic value |
| $40,000 | $10,000 | +$8,800 | Payoff has reached the $55,000−$45,000 width |
| $20,000 | $10,000 | +$8,800 | The short $45,000 put offsets further long-put gains |
A spread can be sensible when you want protection over a defined price band and accept that a collapse below the lower strike will not receive additional offset. Compare the full premium, width, maximum payoff and execution costs—not just the smaller upfront debit.

Calculate contract quantity
Start with the BTC amount you want to hedge and divide it by the contract’s BTC-equivalent unit. Round only after checking the venue’s rules and your tolerance for over- or under-hedging. If one contract represents five BTC, one option is not a hedge for one BTC. CME’s Bitcoin futures option FAQ describes a contract unit tied to one Bitcoin futures contract representing five bitcoin; other listed contracts use different multipliers.
For a partial hedge, calculate the intended coverage explicitly:
hedged units = number of contracts × contract multiplier
Then compare those units with your spot balance. A mismatch leaves residual Bitcoin risk or creates a short exposure larger than the coins you own.

Check the underlying reference
An option may reference spot BTC, an index or a Bitcoin futures contract. A futures-referenced option can move differently from your spot position, especially near expiry and settlement. CME states in its cryptocurrency-futures FAQ: “Neither Cryptocurrency options nor futures will deliver underlying cryptocurrencies, although the value of these contracts are closely tied to the movement of the associated coin.” That means buying such an option does not itself arrange delivery of spot bitcoin.
Check settlement currency
Settlement determines what you receive or pay when the option is exercised or settled. A BTC-settled payoff changes your BTC balance; its value in dollars or another fiat currency will still fluctuate with BTC. A cash-settled contract pays in its specified cash currency and does not add BTC to your wallet. Read the contract specification rather than inferring settlement from the word “Bitcoin.”
Important differences between common contract types
| Feature | Options on Bitcoin futures (CME example) | Inverse Bitcoin options (Deribit support description) |
|---|---|---|
| Reference | Bitcoin futures, not a direct spot coin position | Inverse option structure described by the venue; verify the exact contract specification |
| Spot delivery | Neither the option nor futures delivers spot cryptocurrency; the referenced futures process is financially settled | Settlement is in the base asset according to the support description |
| Contract unit | CME’s FAQ describes one Bitcoin futures contract as representing five bitcoin | Not stated in the cited support material; confirm the multiplier before trading |
| Exercise style | Depends on the listed contract; read the product terms | European-style: exercised at expiry, while a position can be closed earlier by trading it |
| Wallet requirement | CME says a buyer uses a registered futures broker and does not need a wallet for the financially settled futures process described in its FAQ | Premium is paid from the cash balance and settlement changes the base-asset balance |
| Access | Registered futures broker, jurisdiction and account eligibility apply | Jurisdiction, account eligibility, collateral and venue terms apply |
These are structural examples, not a recommendation of either venue. Product specifications, margin rules and eligibility can change, so confirm the current contract before placing an order.
Step-by-step: design and place a premium-limited hedge
- Define the exposure. Record the BTC amount, whether it is held spot or through another instrument, the currency in which you measure loss and the date through which protection is needed.
- Set a loss threshold. Decide the price or portfolio decline at which you want an offset. This determines whether a lower-strike disaster hedge or a nearer-to-the-money hedge is more appropriate.
- Choose the structure. Use a long put when you want uncapped downside protection below the strike (subject to the option’s terms). Use a put spread only if you accept a maximum payoff below the short strike in return for a potentially lower debit.
- Verify the contract. Read the underlying reference, multiplier, quote currency, settlement method, exercise style, expiry time and final settlement index. Do not assume one contract equals one BTC.
- Calculate coverage. Multiply the number of contracts by the contract unit and compare it with your Bitcoin balance. Document any deliberate under- or over-hedge.
- Price the whole position. Include the premium or net debit, exchange and broker fees, bid-ask spread, collateral requirements, financing and the cost of a later roll. There is no universal premium or liquidity figure; it depends on venue, strike, expiry and market conditions.
- Check the order mechanics. For a spread, confirm that both legs are linked as one strategy order when the venue supports it, or understand the risk of one leg filling before the other. A single-leg fill can temporarily create unintended exposure.
- Confirm settlement and custody. Know whether a payout arrives in cash or BTC, where collateral is held, how early closing works and what happens if the account cannot meet a requirement.
- Monitor until expiry or close. Track the option, the spot or futures basis and the remaining time. If the hedge is no longer needed, close it according to the contract rules. If it must continue, price a new expiry rather than assuming an automatic roll.
What can go wrong
The put expires worthless
If the underlying remains above the strike at expiry, the option can expire with no payoff. The premium is then a known cost of insurance, but it is still a complete loss on the option itself. Repeatedly buying short-dated puts can create substantial cumulative premium drag even when BTC does not fall.
Basis mismatch leaves an uncovered loss
A futures option may protect the futures price while your spot BTC moves differently. Differences in index construction, futures basis, settlement timing and market liquidity can leave the hedge weaker or stronger than expected. Compare the exact reference price with the asset you own.

Contract size is wrong
An option covering five BTC against a one-BTC holding can create an over-hedge; an option covering a fraction of a BTC can leave most of the holding exposed. Recheck the multiplier in the contract specification and the order ticket before submitting.
Expiry arrives before the risk period ends
Protection that ends on Friday does not protect a position held through the following week. Rolling or replacing the option requires another premium and can be expensive when volatility or spreads are high.
Liquidity makes the theoretical price unattainable
Displayed prices are not guaranteed execution prices. Wide spreads, thin order books and volatile markets can increase the cost of entering or closing a hedge. Deribit’s risk disclosure identifies complexity, price movement and liquidity as material risks for derivative products.
A spread removes tail protection
Below the short put’s strike, additional BTC losses are no longer offset by additional spread payoff. Treat the short leg as a firm protection boundary. If you need protection through a deeper decline, a long put or a wider spread may be required, at a different cost.
BTC settlement changes the portfolio’s currency mix
A BTC-settled payoff can increase your BTC balance during a decline. The number of coins received and their fiat value are separate questions. If your objective is a fiat-value floor, a cash-settled instrument may align more directly—but only after checking its reference and settlement terms.
Venue and counterparty exposure remains
The hedge depends on the venue, broker, clearing arrangement, collateral rules and your ability to access the account. Jurisdiction and eligibility vary. A profitable theoretical payoff is not the same as accessible funds if withdrawals, trading or settlement are restricted.
How to compare a long put with a put spread
| Decision point | Long put | Put spread |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Full premium paid | Net debit may be lower after premium from the short put |
| Maximum option loss | Premium, plus fees and other stated costs | Net debit, plus fees and other stated costs |
| Downside protection | Continues below the strike according to the contract payoff | Limited to the strike width below the long strike |
| Deep-crash payoff | Grows as the underlying falls | Capped once the underlying is below the short strike |
| Execution | One option leg | Two legs, with additional fill and management risk |
| Best fit | A holder prioritizing broad or uncapped downside offset | A holder willing to define a protection band to reduce the debit |
A practical decision framework
- Choose a long put when preserving protection in a severe decline matters more than minimizing the premium.
- Choose a put spread when you can state the lowest price at which further insurance is unnecessary and accept the resulting payoff cap.
- Reduce the hedge size when the premium budget is fixed but you do not want to sell the lower-strike leg and lose tail protection.
- Use a farther expiry when the risk horizon is longer, while recognizing that more time can increase the premium and that the hedge still ends on a specified date.
- Do not choose by strike alone. Compare strike, expiry, implied volatility, contract multiplier, settlement, liquidity, fees and basis together.
Questions to answer before trading
- What exactly is the underlying: spot BTC, an index or a futures contract?
- How many BTC does one contract represent?
- Is the option American or European style, and when can it be exercised?
- Is settlement in BTC, another cryptocurrency or cash?
- What is the final settlement time and reference price?
- What premium, spread and transaction fees apply at the time of the order?
- What happens if one leg of a spread fills before the other?
- Can the position be closed before expiry, and how liquid is the market?
- Which broker, clearing member or venue holds collateral, and are you eligible in your jurisdiction?
- What will you do when the option expires: accept the result, close early or buy a new expiry?
Bottom line
A long Bitcoin put is the clearest way to limit the loss on an options hedge to the premium: its expiry payoff is tied to the amount below the strike, while the buyer cannot lose more than the premium on that option before fees and related costs. It is not a guarantee that your Bitcoin portfolio cannot lose more than that amount. Match the contract to your exposure, verify the multiplier and settlement currency, and treat a put spread as a deliberate exchange of lower upfront cost for capped protection—not as free insurance.
