A hedge is appropriate only when it reduces a clearly defined loss without pushing the combined position beyond your predetermined risk budget. Write down the original contract’s payout, maximum loss, entry cost, fees, settlement rule and realistic exit price; then model the proposed hedge in every possible outcome. If the combined worst-case loss or cash committed is too high, reduce the hedge or do not add it. Use only risk capital—money left after living expenses and savings needs—not a universal percentage of your bankroll.
Event contracts commonly settle on a yes/no outcome for a fixed amount (usually $1), although some markets have multiple choices or partial payouts. Their prices represent the market’s perceived probability, while fees, taxes, liquidity and contract wording determine your actual result. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) explains these mechanics and the need to understand each contract on its prediction-markets guidance page.
What risk are you trying to hedge?
Start with the original position, not with a hedge product. State the event, side, number of contracts, entry price, expiration, settlement source and the most you can lose. A position that appears to be “worth” a displayed last price can still be difficult to sell at that price, especially in a thin market.

For a fully collateralized yes/no contract, buying YES at $0.62 costs $0.62 per contract. If YES resolves, the contract pays $1 and the pre-fee gain is $0.38; if NO resolves, the $0.62 stake is lost. Buying NO works the other way. This is a payoff description, not a promise that a venue uses exactly these prices or that fees are absent.

The CFTC says event contracts generally have a defined expiration and fixed payout, but some structures allow multiple outcomes or partial payouts. Read the contract’s own rules rather than inferring them from a similar market. Settlement may depend on a named government release, a weather station, a league statistic, a court action or another specified source. A different source or time window creates a different risk.
Define the loss you actually want to reduce
“I want less downside” is incomplete. Specify whether you want to:
- cap the loss if the original prediction is wrong;
- reduce the amount of cash tied up until settlement;
- lock in part of an existing gain;
- remove exposure to a particular date or settlement source; or
- avoid a leveraged liquidation risk.
Those objectives can lead to different actions. Selling part of the original position may fit better than buying an opposite contract. A hedge that reduces one scenario can increase another, and every additional contract brings its own fees, spread and settlement conditions.
Set a risk budget before placing another order
Only commit risk capital after rent, food, debt obligations, emergency reserves and other savings needs are covered. The CFTC’s consumer instruction is explicit: “Only trade with risk capital, or money you can afford to risk after living expenses and other savings needs have been met.” See the agency’s consumer guidance for that wording and related warnings.
Your budget should have two limits:
- Maximum possible loss: the largest negative result across all settlement outcomes after entry costs and fees.
- Maximum capital committed: cash posted or spent while the position is open, including both legs and any margin requirement.
These are not the same. A fully collateralized contract may require the full stake up front, while a margined or leveraged product can expose you to losses larger than the initial amount and to forced liquidation. A hedge is not permission to exceed either limit.

Why there is no universal hedge percentage
The source material does not establish a safe retail bankroll percentage or a standard hedge ratio. Contract size, price, correlation, liquidity, fees, settlement and your own loss tolerance vary. A ratio that offsets one market exactly in units may be too large in dollars, and a dollar-matched hedge may leave substantial event mismatch. Treat any percentage as a personal decision constrained by your written budget, not as a regulatory formula or general rule.
Build a scenario worksheet
Calculate the combined result for each relevant outcome before submitting the hedge. Use the actual contract terms and include all known costs.
- Record the original position’s cash cost, contingent payout and maximum loss.
- List the outcomes that can change the result, including partial or indeterminate settlements if the rules allow them.
- For the proposed hedge, record its price, quantity, payout, expiration, settlement source and fees.
- For each outcome, add the original payout and hedge payout, then subtract both entry costs, trading fees and any other applicable charges.
- Identify the worst combined result and compare it with your pre-set loss budget and cash limit.
- Repeat the calculation using a conservative execution price rather than the displayed last trade if the order book is thin.
Illustrative calculation (before fees)
The following numbers are hypothetical to show the method, not a recommendation or a quote from a particular venue.
| Position | Quantity and entry | Cash paid | Payoff if YES | Payoff if NO |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original YES | 100 contracts at $0.62 | $62 | $100 | $0 |
| Proposed NO hedge | 40 contracts at $0.40 | $16 | $0 | $40 |
| Combined result | 140 contracts total | $78 | $22 net ($100 − $78) | −$38 net ($40 − $78) |
The 40-contract hedge reduces the original $62 loss in the NO outcome to a $38 loss, but it also spends another $16 and lowers the gain in the YES outcome. Actual fees, spreads and settlement adjustments would make both results different. If the $38 worst-case loss or the $78 cash commitment exceeds your budget, the correct response is a smaller hedge or no hedge.
How much should you hedge?
Size from the loss you can accept, not from the amount you initially wagered and not from the desire to “get even.” Let the worksheet show the original loss in the adverse outcome. Then increase the hedge quantity in small increments and recalculate the worst combined result, total cash committed and residual exposure.

Full, partial and zero hedges
- Partial hedge: offsets only part of the adverse outcome and preserves more upside, but leaves residual loss.
- Near-full offset: may reduce one outcome substantially, yet the hedge cost, fees and imperfect price relationship can still produce a loss.
- No additional position: closing part or all of the original trade can be simpler and may avoid a second set of fees and settlement risks.
Do not add funds because the original position moved against you. A hedge should be justified by a risk objective and fit the budget before the order is placed. If the combined worst case breaches the limit at every practical size, exiting or accepting the original position’s known risk is safer than forcing an offset.

Two markets with similar headlines are not necessarily offsets. Compare six dimensions before treating one as a hedge:
| Dimension | Questions to answer | Mismatch consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Event definition | Are both contracts about the same measurable event, threshold and wording? | A different threshold can make both legs lose or win together. |
| Time window | Do they expire at the same moment and cover the same period? | One contract can settle while the underlying risk continues. |
| Settlement source | Do both use the same named authority, data series or official publication? | Different sources can publish conflicting values. |
| Units and payout | Are contract quantities, payout caps and partial-settlement rules comparable? | Equal contract counts may represent unequal dollar exposure. |
| Execution liquidity | Can you enter and exit both legs near the quoted price? | Slippage can erase the intended protection. |
| Operational terms | Are trading hours, fees, jurisdiction and dispute procedures acceptable? | A leg may be unavailable or settled differently when needed. |
This is basis risk: the hedge moves differently from the original exposure. The CFTC glossary defines a hedger as someone taking an opposite derivatives position to minimize loss risk from an adverse price change; its event-market example is a citrus farmer buying a weather contract to offset potential freeze damage. The example illustrates offset logic, not a retail hedge ratio. Read the CFTC glossary and the agency’s event-contract explanation.
Compare a hedge with simply reducing or closing the position
A second contract is only one possible response. Evaluate each choice against your objective and budget.
| Choice | Maximum-loss effect | Cost and execution | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sell part of the original position | Directly reduces exposure and future loss. | One market’s spread and fee; no new settlement rule. | You give up the same fraction of potential upside. |
| Close the entire position | Stops further event exposure at the executable price. | Immediate spread and fee; result is realized before settlement. | The market may later move in the direction you expected. |
| Buy an opposite contract on the same event | Can offset the adverse outcome if definitions and quantities match. | Second entry cost, fee and possible exit spread. | Prices may not sum neatly to the payout because of fees, spread or market structure. |
| Use a related but different event | May reduce a broad theme but rarely removes the exact exposure. | Two markets and two sets of terms. | Basis risk can leave both legs losing. |
| Do nothing | Leaves the original maximum loss unchanged. | No new transaction cost. | Requires accepting the original risk through settlement. |
A no-trade or partial-exit decision is valid. Comparing the alternatives on worst-case loss, residual exposure, total cost, match quality, liquidity and leverage prevents the word “hedge” from disguising a larger position.

Step-by-step process for placing a controlled hedge
- Open the contract rules. Confirm the exact event wording, payout, expiration, settlement source, cancellation provisions and whether partial outcomes are possible.
- Snapshot the original trade. Record side, quantity, average entry price, fees paid, current executable bid or ask and the maximum loss if held to settlement.
- Write the risk budget. State the dollar loss and total cash commitment you will not exceed. Exclude money needed for living expenses and savings.
- Define the target scenario. Identify the adverse outcome or exposure you want to reduce. Do not rely on a general feeling that the position is uncomfortable.
- Screen candidate actions. Price a partial sale, full exit and any opposite contract. Reject candidates whose event definition, timing or settlement source does not match closely enough.
- Model every outcome. Add payouts and subtract both legs’ costs and fees. Include a conservative slippage assumption when the order book is thin.
- Check liquidity before sizing. Review displayed depth and recent trading activity. A last-trade price is not a guaranteed fill; a market order can execute across several prices.
- Enter the smallest size that meets the objective. Use a limit order when appropriate, understand whether it can remain open or expire, and verify the fill rather than assuming the order executed.
- Recalculate after execution. Update average prices, fees, remaining quantities and the new worst-case result. If the hedge is only partially filled, treat the unfilled amount as still exposed.
- Monitor rules and settlement. Keep both contract pages available, watch for source-data changes and know the venue’s deadline for closing or disputing a settlement.
Can you close a prediction-market position before settlement?
Where the market supports secondary trading, you can generally trade out before expiration at the then-current market price. The CFTC states: “Rather than being locked in their position, customers can trade in and out of their position prior to settlement at the current market price to lock in gains or limit losses.” The practical qualification is important: the executable price and ability to fill depend on current liquidity and the venue’s rules. See the CFTC guidance.
Early-exit checks
- Confirm the market is open and your order type is accepted.
- Look at the bid and ask, not only the last trade.
- Estimate the result after the exit fee and spread.
- Check whether a halt, settlement window or data release can prevent trading.
- Verify the fill quantity and cancel any unwanted remainder.
Closing early converts an uncertain settlement result into the price available now. It does not guarantee a favorable price, and a thin order book can make the realized result materially worse than the screen quote.

Include every charge the venue discloses: entry and exit fees, market-maker or transaction charges, withdrawal costs and any conversion cost. Taxes depend on your jurisdiction and how the activity is classified; keep records and obtain professional advice rather than assuming a displayed payout is your after-tax return.
Read how the venue handles canceled events, postponed releases, source revisions, ties, missing data and disputed outcomes. A hedge that settles from a different source or on a different date may not pay when the original position loses. Contract rules, fee schedules, liquidity and regulatory status can change, so recheck them immediately before trading.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep leveraged perpetuals separate from ordinary event contracts
Some venues offer perpetual futures or other margined products alongside event contracts. Those products are not interchangeable with a fully collateralized yes/no contract. The risk disclosure at Kalshi’s perpetuals education page warns that leverage amplifies gains and losses, liquidation is not a guaranteed stop-loss, and severe moves or illiquidity can produce worse execution. Apply that warning to perpetuals, not automatically to every event contract.

If either leg uses leverage or margin, model maintenance requirements, liquidation thresholds, funding or financing charges and the possibility that an automatic close occurs before your intended hedge. A nominally small hedge can create a much larger obligation than its entry cost.
A futures example that explains matching units—but not a retail recommendation
The CFTC’s economic-purpose article describes a Kansas wheat farmer expecting 50,000 bushels who sells ten futures contracts, each representing 5,000 bushels, and later buys back ten contracts to close the hedge. That example demonstrates matching the amount and timing of the exposure. It does not establish a prediction-market contract size, bankroll allocation or recommended hedge ratio. Read the example at the CFTC’s futures article.
Troubleshoot common hedge failures
The hedge costs more than expected
Recalculate using the actual ask price, spread and fees. Reduce quantity, use a patient limit order if the market permits, or choose a partial exit. Never add cash solely to preserve a target ratio.
Recommended Free Tools
Both positions can lose
Compare event definitions, thresholds, time windows and settlement sources line by line. Similar wording is not proof of correlation. If the mismatch cannot be quantified, treat the second position as a separate speculation and size it accordingly—or do not place it.
The order will not fill
Check market hours, minimum tick, price limits and available depth. A non-fill means the intended protection does not exist; update the worksheet using the quantity actually filled.
The original contract moved against you before the hedge
Pause and return to the written budget. Recalculate the current loss and the combined worst case at today’s prices. Avoid “doubling down” or adding a hedge that makes the total commitment exceed the limit.
The market is halted or settlement is disputed
Read the venue’s halt and dispute procedures, preserve order and account records, and do not assume another contract will settle at the same time. Operational risk is part of the hedge analysis.

A concise pre-trade checklist
- Have living expenses and savings needs been protected?
- What is the original position’s maximum loss at settlement?
- What exact scenario should the hedge reduce?
- Do event definition, timing, units and settlement source match?
- What are both legs’ entry costs, fees, taxes and exit costs?
- What is the combined result in every outcome?
- Does the worst case stay within the loss and cash limits?
- Can both legs be executed and closed at realistic prices?
- Is either leg leveraged, margined or subject to liquidation?
- What will you do if the hedge is only partly filled or the market halts?
If any answer is unknown, the position is not ready to hedge. Prediction-market contracts can be useful for expressing a view or offsetting a defined exposure, but a hedge has a price, can be imperfect and never guarantees a profit or eliminates risk.
