For a wired headset, the simplest way to hear Xbox One game audio is to plug a compatible 3.5 mm headset into the headset jack on an Xbox Wireless Controller that has one. If your controller lacks that jack, a compatible Xbox One Stereo Headset Adapter can connect certain 3.5 mm headsets. Wireless headsets use model-specific connection methods, so check the headset’s Xbox One instructions before buying or pairing.
Choose a connection that matches your controller and headset
| Setup | What you need | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Direct wired | A compatible 3.5 mm headset and a controller with a 3.5 mm headset jack. | Confirm the headset supports the audio and microphone functions you want. Microsoft lists its Xbox Stereo Headset as Xbox One compatible and describes connecting it through the controller’s 3.5 mm jack (Microsoft Xbox Stereo Headset). |
| Wired through an adapter | A compatible Xbox One Stereo Headset Adapter and a CTIA-standard 3.5 mm stereo headset. | Microsoft’s adapter guidance is from 2014; it does not verify current retail availability or compatibility with every controller and headset combination (Xbox Wire, February 11, 2014). |
| Wireless | The particular headset’s supported Xbox One connection method, which may involve model-specific pairing or a transmitter. | There is no universal wireless setup established by the cited Microsoft pages. Follow the instructions for the exact headset model. |
Connect a wired headset directly to the controller
- Check the controller for a 3.5 mm headset jack.
- Plug in a compatible 3.5 mm headset. Microsoft identifies its Xbox Stereo Headset as compatible with Xbox One and designed for direct controller connection.
- Check the headset’s inline or on-ear controls, including volume and microphone mute, if your model has them.
- Open the console’s audio settings if you want to adjust headset output or select a spatial-audio format. Menu labels can vary from older instructions.
If the game plays through the TV rather than the headset, check that the plug is fully seated and review the console’s audio output settings. For microphone or chat problems, check the headset’s mute control and the console’s chat and game audio controls.
Use an adapter if the controller has no headset jack
Microsoft’s February 2014 announcement describes the Xbox One Stereo Headset Adapter as a way to connect compatible CTIA-standard 3.5 mm stereo headsets to controllers without a built-in 3.5 mm jack. The adapter’s documented controls include game/chat balance, master volume, and microphone mute (Xbox Wire’s adapter announcement).

Set up headphone spatial audio
Microsoft’s Xbox One instructions published November 13, 2017 give this path: Settings > All settings > Display & sound > Audio output > Headset format. The article names Windows Sonic for Headphones and Dolby Atmos for Headphones as options (Xbox Wire, November 13, 2017). Current menu names or availability may differ.
In that 2017 guidance, Windows Sonic was described as available out of the box, while Dolby Atmos for Headphones required installing Dolby Access and offered a purchase or 30-day trial at that time. Those terms are dated and should not be treated as current pricing or availability. Microsoft’s current Xbox Stereo Headset page lists Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos, and DTS Headphone:X support, and notes that Dolby Atmos and DTS:X may require additional purchases, apps, and supported hardware (Xbox Stereo Headset specifications).

What to verify before buying
- Controller jack: Determine whether your controller has a 3.5 mm headset jack; that determines whether direct wired connection is an option.
- Connection type: For a wired headset, verify its connector and compatibility. For a wireless headset, check the exact Xbox One pairing or transmitter requirements.
- Microphone and chat: Confirm the headset includes a microphone if you need voice chat, and identify how it handles mute and game/chat balance.
- Audio format: If you want spatial audio, check the relevant app, purchase, and hardware requirements instead of assuming every headset or game supports every format.
