If your Razer keyboard is behaving unexpectedly, a hard reset may restore its settings to factory defaults. It does not reinstall or update the keyboard’s firmware: that is a separate, model-specific process. Before trying the reset key combination, check that your exact keyboard model is included in Razer’s hard-reset instructions.

Reset or update: which do you need?

Choose the action based on the problem you are trying to solve. Razer describes a hard reset as restoring the keyboard to its factory-default state. A firmware update installs software for the keyboard itself; it uses an updater made for a particular model.

Action What it does When it may fit
Hard reset Returns supported keyboard settings to factory defaults and clears onboard settings such as saved profiles and lighting configurations. Unexpected settings, lighting or key behavior, or a device that is not responding as expected.
Firmware update Installs a firmware release intended for a specific keyboard model. You need a firmware fix or Razer’s model support page provides an update relevant to the issue.

Neither procedure should be assumed to apply to every Razer keyboard. Use the instructions and downloads for your exact model.

Check your model and save your settings first

Razer’s hard-reset procedure applies to the Huntsman and BlackWidow models listed on its support page, not automatically to every keyboard it makes. Match the full model name before using the key combination. If your model is not listed, check its support page or contact Razer Support rather than trying the sequence by guesswork.

A reset clears onboard settings, including saved profiles and lighting configurations. Export or otherwise save custom settings before proceeding. Razer’s Synapse 4 factory-reset guidance also recommends exporting the device profile first; see Razer’s Synapse 4 reset instructions.

How to hard-reset a listed Razer keyboard

  1. Close Razer Synapse and other software that manages peripherals.
  2. Disconnect the keyboard’s USB cable. If it is wireless, turn it fully off and disconnect it from paired devices.
  3. With the keyboard disconnected, press and hold Left Ctrl + Esc.
  4. While continuing to hold both keys, reconnect the USB cable.
  5. Keep holding the keys for about five seconds after reconnecting, then release them.
  6. Wait for the keyboard to restart. Its lighting may turn off and back on during the reset; Razer says the reset is complete when the default lighting effect returns.
  7. Open Synapse and restore your preferred lighting, key bindings and profiles. If your keyboard supports onboard profile storage, save the settings back to its memory.

Razer states: “Performing a hard reset restores your Razer keyboard to its factory default state.” Use this procedure only for models covered by the linked instructions.

How to update firmware instead

Find the firmware page for your exact keyboard model on Razer Support and follow the instructions on that page. Do not install an updater for a different model just because its name or appearance is similar.

  1. Save your files and close other programs.
  2. Download the updater listed for your keyboard’s exact model.
  3. Run the updater and connect the keyboard as directed.
  4. Start the update and wait for it to finish. Do not disconnect the keyboard or interrupt the updater while it is running.

Razer Support lists, for example, updater v1.2.1_r1 for model RZ03-0500, dated January 8, 2026. Its notes mention sleep-mode behavior when Synapse for Mac runs and intermittent lighting flashes affecting Windows Dynamic Lighting. For model RZ03-0553, Razer lists updater v1.3.0_r2, dated August 18, 2026, with notes about Dual-Key Priority and Snap Flex. These are release entries for those specific models, not universal firmware versions or evidence that either is the latest update for another keyboard. Check the current page for your model.

If the keyboard still has problems

For keys that are stuck, loose, unresponsive or sending repeated inputs, or for lighting or detection problems that remain after a reset, work through basic troubleshooting before repeating the reset:

  • Install available updates for the keyboard firmware, Synapse and your operating system, following the instructions for the relevant model and software.
  • Clean the keyboard with a microfiber cloth and compressed air.
  • Connect it directly to the computer, bypassing any USB hub, extender or KVM switch. Try another USB port.
  • Test the keyboard with Synapse disabled to see whether the behavior changes.
  • Try the keyboard on another computer.

Razer notes that a persistent key problem may involve a switch. Replacing a switch is relevant only for a model with hot-swappable switches; it is not a general fix for all Razer keyboards. If the problem continues, use the model’s support page or contact Razer Support.
