Do not touch, move, collect, bag, test, or transport a glassy fragment that might be radioactive. Move away, keep other people and animals away, and contact local emergency responders or the radiation-control authority for instructions. Treat an isolated find as unidentified material until trained officials assess it.
Appearance cannot establish whether a fragment is radioactive, whether it came from a nuclear test, or whether it is safe. The same precaution applies to green glass, fused sand, metal pieces, or other debris associated with a suspected radiological incident.
What to do immediately
- Stop and move away. Do not pick up the object, kick it, turn it over, or lean over it. Increase your distance and avoid spending additional time nearby.
- Keep people and animals away. Warn anyone approaching without returning to the object yourself. Do not ask another untrained person to inspect it.
- Do not carry or package it. Do not put it in a bag, jar, vehicle, pocket, or building. Moving it can spread material and makes the scene harder for officials to assess.
- Call the appropriate authority. For immediate danger, an active incident, injury, fire, explosion, or suspected contamination, call the local emergency number. Otherwise contact the local or state radiation-control authority and follow its instructions. The correct agency and reporting channel depend on your location.
- Wait for instructions at a safe distance. Do not approach again to mark the item, take a sample, or make your own boundary. Boundary-setting and debris handling are responder tasks.
These steps apply even when the fragment looks harmless. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises people to stay as far away as possible from radioactive material involved in a transportation accident and not touch the cargo. That guidance is not a debris-specific public procedure, but it reflects the same precaution: distance and non-interference are safer than curiosity or improvised testing.
Why a glassy fragment cannot be identified by sight
Trinitite is a historical example of glass formed when sand fused with material from the 1945 Trinity nuclear test. An older U.S. Department of Energy technical report describes green glass at Trinity Site and discusses residual gamma activity there. That description is site-specific historical context, not a field-identification test.

Color, bubbles, texture, magnetism, a desert location, or a story about a nearby test cannot prove that an unknown fragment is trinitite. Nor can those features establish the fragment’s activity, contamination potential, or safe handling method. A piece that resembles trinitite may be ordinary industrial glass, naturally fused material, or something else entirely; a dangerous item need not look unusual.
Only a qualified radiological assessment can determine whether a piece contains or carries radioactive material and what controls are needed. The public guidance reviewed for this situation does not provide a do-it-yourself sampling, packaging, detector, cleaning, or identification procedure.
Exposure is not the same as contamination
Radiation exposure means energy from a source passes through or reaches your body. A person can be exposed without radioactive material remaining on the body.
Radioactive contamination means radioactive material is on the skin, clothing, or another surface, or has entered the body. Contamination can spread to people and surfaces. An object can therefore be an external radiation source, a source of removable material, or both; only an assessment can distinguish those conditions.
Do not assume that feeling well proves there was no risk, and do not assume that touching an object guarantees contamination. The appropriate response depends on what happened, how long contact lasted, whether dust or fragments were generated, and whether material could have entered a wound, mouth, nose, or lungs.

If you touched or disturbed the material
Leave the area without spreading it
Step away and avoid touching your face, other people, phones, door handles, vehicle interiors, or other surfaces until officials provide instructions. Do not return to retrieve belongings. Tell responders what you touched, whether the object broke, and whether you saw dust or liquid.
If you are with someone who may have touched the item, tell that person to stop handling other objects and move away as well. Do not try to examine hands, shoes, tools, or clothing for a visible sign of radiation; radiation and contamination cannot be judged reliably by sight or sensation.

If material may be on your clothing, remove the potentially affected outer layer carefully and avoid shaking it. Keep it away from other people and surfaces while waiting for instructions. CDC guidance explains that removing outer clothing can remove a substantial amount of radioactive material from the body, but the next step depends on the incident and should be directed by professionals.
Wash exposed skin gently
If practical, wash exposed skin with soap and water. Use gentle washing rather than vigorous scrubbing, which can irritate skin. Do not use bleach, solvents, abrasive cleaners, or other improvised chemicals. Do not delay emergency medical care to perform a lengthy wash.
Report possible internal contamination
Tell responders or a clinician if you inhaled dust, swallowed material, had a cut or puncture, or believe material entered your eyes, nose, or mouth. Internal contamination requires professional evaluation; home testing cannot determine whether radioactive material entered the body.

What to remember while waiting for officials
Keep a simple account of events from a safe location: when you found the item, how close you were, whether you touched or moved it, whether it broke, and who else was nearby. Do not return to check details or retrieve a phone, bag, tool, or photograph. Tell officials if people or animals may have walked through the area after the discovery.

Time, distance, and shielding: what the principle means here
The CDC’s ALARA explanation describes radiation protection in terms of minimizing unnecessary time near a source, increasing distance, and using appropriate shielding. For an unknown fragment, distance and avoiding unnecessary time are the practical actions available to the public.
Shielding is not a reason to approach the object or improvise a container. The right material and thickness depend on the type and energy of radiation, the source configuration, and the scene. A wall, vehicle, or piece of equipment that seems protective may not be adequate, and moving the object to obtain shielding can increase risk. Leave shielding decisions to trained responders.
What responders do—and what the public should not copy
Department of Homeland Security radiological-dispersal-device planning guidance addresses scenes containing radioactive ballistic fragments. It instructs trained first responders to avoid moving or relocating pieces and to establish boundaries around debris. That is an incident-response procedure, not a public invitation to approach a suspected fragment, place markers, or create a perimeter.

A consumer detector, disposable gloves, sample container, or online identification chart cannot substitute for that process and may encourage handling that officials are trying to prevent.
How to report a suspected find
When you call, remain at a safe distance and give the dispatcher or radiation-control official information you can provide without returning to the object:
- Your exact location, using a landmark, address, map pin, or safe description.
- Whether there is an active emergency such as fire, explosion, crash, injury, trespassing, or a security threat.
- What the item looks like from a distance and whether it is intact, broken, dusty, wet, or part of a larger debris field.
- Whether anyone touched, moved, opened, crushed, cut, inhaled, swallowed, or was wounded by material.
- When the contact or discovery occurred and whether people or animals may have walked through the area.
- Your callback information and a safe location where responders can meet you.
Do not cross into the area to improve a photograph or obtain coordinates. If you already have a photograph taken from a safe distance, tell officials; do not return for one.
Why jurisdiction matters
The agency responsible for a suspected find depends on where the object is located and what is happening around it. An active fire, crash, explosion, injury, or security concern requires emergency dispatch; an isolated object may instead be handled by a local or state radiation-control authority. If you are reporting from another city or state, give the location of the debris and ask for the authority that has jurisdiction over that scene.
There is no single reporting channel that applies everywhere. Do not delay a call while searching for a national directory, and do not assume that a nearby laboratory, museum, or private testing service can accept the item. Officials can direct the report to the appropriate radiological, public-safety, environmental, or law-enforcement contact.

Common mistakes and why they increase risk
“It is only a small piece.”
Size alone does not establish the radiation level or whether loose contamination is present. A small item can still require controlled assessment.
“It looks like famous trinitite.”
Historical trinitite descriptions do not authenticate an unknown fragment. Treating resemblance as proof can lead to unnecessary handling or transport.
“I will put it in a jar until someone can test it.”
Picking up and moving the object may spread contamination, expose anyone who handles the container, and alter the scene. Ask officials what they want done instead.

“I can buy a detector and settle the question.”
A reading from an unverified consumer instrument may be affected by calibration, geometry, background radiation, shielding, and the type of radiation present. It cannot by itself identify the material or authorize transport, sale, disposal, or collection.
“Gloves will make handling safe.”
Gloves can create false confidence and do not prevent radiation from reaching the body. They also become contaminated if they contact the material. Do not put on protective equipment to approach the object; wait for trained responders.
“I feel fine, so there is no problem.”
Symptoms are not a reliable field test. Some exposures produce no immediate symptoms, while a person can be contaminated without feeling ill. Report the circumstances and follow professional advice.
What happens after you report it
The responding authority decides whether the scene needs a radiological survey, access control, medical evaluation, evidence handling, or another agency. You may be asked to describe your movements, identify people who were nearby, remain available for questions, or avoid a location until it is assessed.

Do not assume that an official response will follow a particular timetable or that every jurisdiction uses the same agency. Radiation-control responsibilities vary by location. If you are outside the area where the find occurred, report the location to the authority that has jurisdiction over the scene, not only to an agency near you.
Special considerations for children, pets, and property
Children and animals may approach unusual objects before adults notice them. Keep them away without returning close to the debris. Tell officials if a child or pet touched, carried, licked, or played near it.
Do not enter a vehicle, home, shed, or other space solely to store the object or retrieve it. If you believe contamination may have been carried indoors or onto property, tell responders exactly where contact may have occurred and wait for their directions about access and cleaning.

Why there is no safe public “cleanup” method
Cleaning can turn a fixed source into airborne dust or spread removable contamination across a larger area. Vacuuming, sweeping, hosing, brushing, or pressure-washing may distribute material rather than remove it safely. The correct method depends on the radionuclide, surface, contamination level, and waste controls, none of which can be established from appearance.

For the same reason, do not sell, mail, donate, discard, bury, or transport suspected debris. Disposal and shipment are regulated activities that require an authorized determination and chain of custody where applicable.

Trinitite formed at the Trinity Site when intense heat fused sand with products of the nuclear test, including fission and activation products. The historical Department of Energy report discusses residual gamma activity at that location. Those facts explain why genuine material is a radiological subject, but they do not establish that every green glass fragment is trinitite or that a historical specimen found elsewhere has the same activity.
Location, date, provenance, and appearance can help trained investigators frame an assessment, but none replaces measurement and controlled handling. Do not collect fragments from a former test area or any other site unless the responsible authority has explicitly authorized that activity.
