Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
A single VPS can serve only a finite number of requests, connections, bytes and database operations. The safest response to a sudden surge is to keep cacheable traffic at the edge, limit expensive requests before they consume origin resources, and scale beyond one server when demand remains high. During the event, watch both user-facing symptoms and infrastructure saturation, then follow a runbook that preserves evidence.
Do not begin by blindly rebooting or resizing the VPS. First establish whether users are failing, identify which request types are consuming capacity, and determine whether the pattern looks like a legitimate flash crowd or an attack.

Every VPS has a hard capacity ceiling. CPU, memory, network throughput, disk I/O, worker processes, file descriptors, database connections and queue capacity can each become the limiting resource. A server may show moderate CPU while the database connection pool, network link or application queue is already exhausted.
Once a bottleneck is saturated, extra requests do not simply wait harmlessly. They occupy workers, increase queue time, trigger retries, consume more database connections and can create a feedback loop in which latency causes clients to send even more requests. The result is often a cascade from slow responses to 5xx errors and complete unavailability.

The practical objective is therefore not to accept every request. It is to keep high-value requests within a measured safe operating envelope and reject or defer work that would push the system beyond it.
Establish your safe operating envelope before an incident
Generic claims such as “a VPS handles 1,000 requests per second” are not reliable. Capacity depends on request size, endpoint mix, authentication, personalization, database queries, cacheability, connection reuse and the application runtime. Measure your own service with production-like traffic.
Record a baseline
Collect at least the following during normal and busy periods:
- Requests per second and concurrent connections.
- Latency percentiles, especially p50, p95, p99 and maximum response time.
- 4xx and 5xx rates, timeout counts and availability-probe results.
- CPU utilization, load average, memory pressure, swap activity and process counts.
- Disk I/O latency and throughput, including log and database writes.
- Network throughput, packets per second and connection counts.
- Database connections, query latency, lock waits and cache-hit rate.
- Queue depth, worker utilization and the age of the oldest queued job.
- Bandwidth consumption and any provider quotas or transfer limits.
Set alert thresholds from observed headroom rather than arbitrary percentages. For example, an alert should fire when latency or error rate becomes unacceptable to users, even if CPU is below a conventional threshold. Record the values that preceded failure so responders can recognize danger early.
Load-test the real request mix
Use a staging environment or infrastructure you own and replay representative URL paths, payload sizes, authentication states and database behavior. Test sustained load, short bursts and recovery after the burst ends. Increase concurrency until latency, errors or a resource limit crosses your service objective. Document the highest rate that remains stable and the point at which throttling must begin.

Put an edge layer in front of the VPS
A CDN or reverse proxy is usually the fastest way to reduce origin load. It can serve static responses from locations near users, collapse simultaneous requests for the same object and filter unwanted traffic before it reaches the VPS. AWS guidance describes cache hierarchies, request collapsing and Origin Shield as ways to prevent many requests from reaching an origin; it also emphasizes maximizing cache-hit ratio for both performance and DDoS resilience.
Cache static and safely cacheable content
- Give fingerprinted JavaScript, CSS, images and downloads long cache lifetimes. Version the filename or query key when content changes so clients can retain objects without receiving stale releases.
- For non-personalized HTML, consider short microcaching. A brief shared cache can absorb a burst while limiting staleness.
- Use stale-while-revalidate where the application permits it. The edge can serve an older response while it fetches a fresh copy, avoiding a synchronized cache miss.
- Exclude personalized pages, authenticated responses and side-effecting requests unless the cache key and privacy behavior are fully understood.
- Collapse concurrent misses for the same key so one request fetches from the origin while the others wait for that response.
Check cache status, hit ratio, object size and revalidation behavior during a test. A CDN that forwards every request, or repeatedly revalidates a hot object, may add complexity without relieving the bottleneck.
Keep the origin private
When an edge provider fronts the service, restrict the VPS firewall to the provider’s published egress ranges and administrative access paths. Remove direct public application access where possible. Otherwise an attacker or a misconfigured client can bypass the cache and WAF entirely by connecting to the origin address. Cloudflare’s DDoS guidance similarly recommends origin restriction and as much caching as practical.
Understand what the edge cannot solve
Cache misses, personalized pages, file uploads, API mutations and expensive database queries still reach the VPS. Edge caching also does not fix a slow origin, an exhausted database or an application that performs unbounded work per request. Treat the edge as an offload and filtering layer, not a substitute for capacity testing.

Rate-limit by endpoint cost and identity
One global requests-per-second limit is rarely appropriate. A static asset, a product search and a password-reset endpoint consume very different resources. Define limits per route or operation and choose an identity key such as authenticated account, API token, source IP, or a combination. Shared corporate NAT addresses make a strict per-IP limit unfair; unauthenticated login and search endpoints may still need an IP component.
Derive limits from load tests
Start with the measured safe rate for each expensive path, reserve headroom for normal traffic, and set a burst allowance only when tests show the queue can absorb it. AWS recommends establishing throttling values through load testing. Requests above capacity should receive an explicit throttling response rather than being allowed to consume all workers.
Return HTTP 429 for deliberate rate limiting and include a Retry-After value when clients can retry safely. Use 503 when the service is temporarily unable to accept work for reasons other than a client’s quota, and provide retry guidance to well-behaved clients. Avoid random connection resets: explicit responses stop aggressive retries and make the event visible in logs.
Implement limits at the edge and origin
Apply coarse protection at the WAF or reverse proxy, then retain a second guard in the application for authenticated identities and business rules. NGINX implements request limiting with a leaky-bucket algorithm and supports per-IP or per-server connection limits. Connection limits are useful when slow clients or long-lived requests consume workers even though request rate appears low.

Choose between a CDN, a larger VPS and multiple origins
The right response depends on whether demand is cacheable, how quickly capacity is needed and whether the workload has shared state.
| Approach | Time to activate | Traffic absorbed before origin | Best workload | Limits and state | Observability and escalation | Geographic reach | Recurring cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CDN or WAF in front of the VPS | Usually fastest if DNS and origin access are prepared | High for cacheable HTTP; filtering also removes unwanted requests | Static assets, public pages and safely microcached responses | Fine-grained edge rules; personalized and write-heavy traffic still reaches the origin | Edge logs plus origin metrics; depends on provider controls and support | Distributed edge locations | Varies by traffic, features and provider; verify current terms |
| Larger single VPS | Fast vertical step if a larger size is available | Higher origin ceiling, but no offload | Workloads that are not easily cached and need more CPU, RAM or bandwidth | One server remains a single capacity and failure ceiling; state is simple | Simple to observe; provider limits still apply | Usually one region or data center | Higher instance cost; verify current plan and transfer charges |
| Multiple origins behind a load balancer | Slower to design and deploy | Capacity grows with healthy instances; edge caching can add further offload | Sustained demand and workloads that need horizontal capacity | Requires session strategy, shared files, database scaling and deployment coordination | Needs health checks, per-node metrics and a documented provider escalation path | Can span zones or regions if the application supports it | Load balancer, instances, storage, database and transfer costs |
Use a larger VPS as an immediate vertical step when the bottleneck is clear and resizing is safe. It is not a durable answer to growth that repeatedly exceeds one machine. When demand is sustained or failure of one host is unacceptable, deploy a second origin and put both behind a health-checking load balancer.
Prepare a horizontal scaling design
Make application state shareable
Multiple origins require sessions, uploaded files, caches and background jobs to work across nodes. Store sessions in a shared, highly available store or use signed stateless sessions. Put user uploads in shared object storage rather than a local disk. Ensure each node can receive any request after a health-check pass.
Protect the database
Adding web servers does not help if every request waits on one database. Set a connection ceiling, use a pool sized for the database rather than the number of web workers, cache read-heavy data and move reports or other slow work to a queue. Monitor lock waits, replication lag and query latency while adding origins.
Scale on useful signals
AWS describes scaling policies based on CPU, RAM, network I/O and custom metrics. For this application, a custom signal such as request latency, queue age or active requests may be more meaningful than CPU alone. Define scale-out and scale-in delays that prevent oscillation, and retain enough warm capacity for the burst you expect.

Runbook for an active spike
Write this procedure down, assign an incident lead and practice it before a high-profile launch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Confirm user impact. Check synthetic availability probes, p95 and p99 latency, timeout rate, 4xx/5xx rate and reports from affected regions. At the same time inspect CPU, memory, disk I/O, network throughput, database connections and queue depth. AWS recommends health checks and alarms across application and infrastructure metrics.
- Compare the request shape with baseline. Identify top URLs, methods, response sizes, referrers, geographies, user-agent mix, source networks and cache status. A legitimate flash crowd often concentrates on a recognizable announcement URL or referral source. A flood may spread across abnormal paths or methods and show an unusual source distribution.
- Protect expensive paths first. Tighten WAF rules and per-route limits, cap concurrent connections, disable nonessential features and serve cached or stale content. Return controlled 429 or 503 responses with retry guidance instead of allowing workers and databases to fail unpredictably.
- Offload before adding capacity. Purge only objects that are incorrect; do not flush a healthy cache during a surge. Increase cache lifetimes where safe, enable request collapsing and move slow work into a queue.
- Resize for an immediate vertical step. If a measured CPU, memory, disk or network limit is the bottleneck, move to a larger VPS after checking provider resize behavior and rollback. Keep watching latency during the operation.
- Scale horizontally for sustained demand. Add a tested origin, verify health checks and shared state, then shift traffic gradually through the load balancer. Do not introduce an untested node into the incident without a rollback path.
- Communicate and preserve evidence. Record the timeline, configuration changes, graphs, request samples and provider messages. Keep a static maintenance page available if the application cannot serve dynamic traffic.
Flash crowd or DDoS attack?
The first response is similar: protect the origin and preserve availability. Classification improves the next decision but is rarely certain from one graph.
Signals consistent with a flash crowd
- Requests concentrate on a known announcement, product or media URL.
- Referrers, geographies and user agents resemble your audience.
- Methods and paths match normal application behavior.
- Most requests are cacheable or complete successfully when the origin is protected.
Signals consistent with DDoS
- Unexpected request or bandwidth graphs, rapid slowness or outages, and abnormal origin logs.
- Large volumes of requests to random, nonexistent or unusually expensive paths.
- Unusual methods, protocols, source distribution, packet sizes or connection behavior.
- Traffic that continues despite strict application limits or has no plausible user journey.
Cloudflare lists slowness, outages, unexpected request and bandwidth graphs, and abnormal origin logs among common DDoS signs. These indicators are not proof; legitimate clients can also retry badly or arrive through shared networks.
Use edge mitigation for attacks
Enable managed DDoS protections, custom WAF rules, rate limits and caching at the edge. Keep the origin reachable only from the edge provider and approved administration paths. If a provider reports a mitigation limit or places traffic in a blackhole, contact support immediately with source geography, protocols, packet sizes, timestamps and affected services. DigitalOcean recommends supplying these details so firewall rules and architecture can be improved.
DigitalOcean reported in 2022 that 89% of its observed attacks lasted less than one hour. That is historical observation data, not a universal forecast; keep protections active until telemetry shows the event has ended and normal traffic is stable.
Monitoring, alerts and the incident runbook
Dashboards should show user impact and saturation together. A green CPU graph does not compensate for failed probes, rising p99 latency or a full database pool.
Alert on symptoms and causes
- Availability probe failures and regional success rate.
- Latency percentiles and timeout rate.
- 4xx, 5xx and 429 rates by endpoint.
- CPU steal time, memory pressure, swap and process exhaustion.
- Disk latency, network throughput and packet or connection rates.
- Database pool usage, lock waits, query latency and queue age.
- Cache-hit ratio, origin fetch rate and WAF challenge or block counts.
Every alert should link to an action: who is paged, which dashboard to open, which limit can be changed, when to enable maintenance mode and when to escalate to the provider. Include rollback instructions for WAF rules, DNS changes, instance resizing and feature flags.
Preserve logs and provider telemetry
Retain edge, load balancer, web server, application, database and firewall logs with synchronized timestamps. Capture sampled headers, status codes, request paths, source networks, bytes, connection counts and rule actions while respecting privacy requirements. Export provider graphs and incident messages before they expire. These records allow you to distinguish a cache miss storm from an attack and to justify new limits or architecture changes.
Quick Recap
After the spike
- Keep temporary limits and feature flags documented, then remove them one at a time after latency, errors and queue depth return to baseline.
- Compare the event’s peak request shape and resource use with the pre-event capacity test.
- Identify the first saturated resource and the earliest user-visible symptom.
- Update cache policies, route limits, database ceilings, dashboards and escalation contacts.
- Replay the incident in a controlled load test and rehearse the revised runbook.
- If one VPS was the limiting factor, schedule a second origin or autoscaling design rather than relying on another emergency resize.
Common mistakes that make spikes worse
- Rebooting first: a reboot clears symptoms briefly while discarding useful evidence and does not remove demand.
- Using one global limit: cheap static requests and costly database operations need different budgets.
- Allowing unlimited retries: clients can turn a transient slowdown into a retry storm. Send explicit 429 or 503 responses with guidance.
- Exposing the origin address: attackers and bypass traffic can ignore your CDN and WAF.
- Scaling web servers without the database: more origins can exhaust a shared connection pool faster.
- Purging all caches during an incident: this creates a synchronized origin fetch when the server is least able to handle it.
- Trusting provider marketing limits: product limits, pricing and mitigation policies change. Verify current terms and test your own application.
Practical decision sequence
- If users are unaffected and cache hit ratio is high, continue observing and avoid disruptive changes.
- If cacheable traffic is reaching the origin, fix cache headers, request collapsing and origin restrictions before resizing.
- If one expensive endpoint is consuming capacity, apply a route-specific limit, queue slow work and return controlled 429 responses.
- If a measured resource is saturated but traffic is legitimate, resize the VPS for immediate relief.
- If demand is sustained, one host remains near its ceiling, or availability requires redundancy, add origins behind a load balancer and address shared state and database capacity.
- If traffic has attack indicators, keep mitigation at the edge, restrict the origin and escalate with preserved telemetry.
