For most Windows 11 users, no. Microsoft documents GlobalDeviceId as an internal identifier in Windows reporting, but the available sources do not show a built-in consumer setting to switch it off. A third-party blocking script is a more invasive option, and one publication reported Microsoft account-service errors after testing it. If your goal is to reduce optional diagnostics, use Windows’ own diagnostic-data controls—but they do not disable GDID.

What GDID is—and what the documentation establishes

Microsoft’s Windows Update for Business reporting schema includes a GlobalDeviceId field in UCDOStatus, a per-device Delivery Optimization report. Microsoft describes it as a “Microsoft global device identifier” and says, “This identifier is used by Microsoft internally.” The schema covers Windows 10 and Windows 11: Microsoft Learn’s UCDOStatus data schema.

This establishes that Microsoft uses the identifier internally in the documented reporting context. It does not, by itself, establish every use of GDID across consumer Windows services, how the identifier is created or retained, or that it tracks all Windows activity. The term “tracker” is used in some coverage, but “identifier” is the more precise description supported by the schema.

What happens if you try to disable it?

Windows Latest reported on July 10, 2026, that Windows has no native GDID-specific consumer toggle. It also distinguishes optional diagnostic-data controls from GDID: changing the former does not switch off the identifier. Its reporting discusses account-related and cross-service behavior, but Microsoft’s public schema does not fully explain those details. See Windows Latest’s report on GDID in Windows 11.

A third-party option is Windscribe’s deGDID PowerShell script, which Tom’s Hardware described on August 6, 2026, as experimental and requiring administrator execution. In that publication’s Windows 11 test, Microsoft app and account-verification connections produced errors after the script was used. That is a reported test result, not proof the same effect will occur on every PC or Windows build. Tom’s Hardware also said the script cannot delete identifiers already stored on Microsoft’s servers. Read its account at Tom’s Hardware’s report on the deGDID script.

Choose the option that matches your privacy goal

Option What it changes Trade-off
Windows diagnostic-data controls Reduces optional diagnostic data according to the selected settings; it does not disable GDID. Lower-impact than a system-modifying script. Review the description of each setting available on your Windows 11 installation.
Third-party GDID blocker Attempts to block GDID through a system modification. More intrusive; a publication reported Microsoft app and account-verification connection errors in its test. Effects are not established for every build.

How to reduce optional diagnostic data

If your aim is to limit optional diagnostics rather than specifically disable GDID, use the built-in Windows controls. Menu labels and availability can change by Windows version, so check the descriptions shown on your device.

What you should not assume

  • Turning off optional diagnostic data makes the PC anonymous or disables GDID.
  • A third-party blocker erases identifiers Microsoft may already hold.
  • A VPN disables or removes a Windows identifier; the cited sources do not establish that.
  • The reported script test predicts what will happen on every Windows 11 build or device.
