If a Lightning payment appears stuck, check its status with the node or payment service that sent it before trying again. An app timeout, a long-running spinner, or an expired invoice does not by itself prove that an already-started payment failed. If the sending node reports that the payment is still in flight, keep tracking it: the payment may need to settle or fail before its outcome is final.
This guide explains what to do as a Lightning app user and how an app should handle payment status safely. The implementation details below reflect official LND and Core Lightning documentation reviewed on October 9, 2026; exact API fields and options can vary by installed version.
First, find out whether the payment is still in flight
A Lightning payment is not necessarily complete just because the app stopped waiting, and it is not necessarily failed because the app reported a timeout. The decisive check is the payment record held by the node or payment service that initiated the payment. The app’s local timer describes its own wait; it does not establish whether the payment’s HTLCs have settled.

| Node-reported state | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| In flight / pending | The payment is still being resolved. Under LND’s description, it may still be finding a route and path-locking HTLCs. | Keep tracking the original payment. Do not submit a duplicate payment for the same purchase. |
| Succeeded / complete | The payment completed successfully. | Show the payment as complete and reconcile it with the purchase. Do not send it again. |
| Failed | The implementation has recorded a final failure. | Check the failure reason, correct any fixable issue, and only then consider a retry. |
LND’s payment history can include incomplete payment records when requested. A lookup that returns only completed payments may therefore miss the very payment an app needs to investigate. Use the tracking or history method appropriate to the sending implementation and version; do not treat an absent result from a narrowly filtered query as proof of failure.
State should be read as a progression, not guessed from elapsed time. A payment can move from an unresolved state to a final outcome after the app’s original request has stopped producing updates. Reconnect to the same payment record and check again; do not create a second send simply to get a fresh response. A user-facing label such as “checking payment” can accurately convey uncertainty without implying either success or failure.
What to do as a Lightning app user
- Keep the payment reference. Record the transaction or payment reference shown by the app, along with the merchant, amount, and approximate time. The reference helps support staff or the node operator locate the original payment.
- Refresh or reopen the payment details. Look for a status update rather than relying on the initial timeout message. If the app offers a payment-history view, check the same payment there instead of starting a new payment flow.
- Do not pay again while the status is pending. Ask the app or merchant to check the original payment. A second attempt could create a duplicate charge if the first one later succeeds.
- If the app says the payment succeeded, verify the purchase state. Keep the confirmation and contact the merchant if the app and merchant disagree. Do not initiate another payment just to make the order screen update.
- If the app reports a final failure, follow the specific correction it gives. Depending on the reported reason, that may mean requesting a fresh invoice, checking the amount, or trying again after a routing problem has cleared.
- If there is no clear status, contact the app’s support team or node operator. Provide the payment reference and explain that the result is unresolved. There is no universal Lightning-wide duration after which every delayed payment should be declared failed.
Closing an app or losing a network connection may interrupt what you see, but the client-side interruption is not a reliable payment-state check. When you return, look up the original payment rather than assuming that the app’s screen reflects its current status.
When contacting support, include enough information to distinguish this attempt from another purchase: the payment reference, merchant or service, amount, approximate time, and the status displayed by the app. Do not send another payment merely because a support reply is taking time. If the app offers a way to copy a reference or view payment details, use that information to help support investigate the original attempt.
Why a timeout may not cancel a Lightning payment
Lightning payments use HTLCs, or hashed time-locked contracts, to route a payment through the network. LND’s sending guide distinguishes an early route failure, before the payment’s HTLCs are locked in, from a payment that is already path-locked. An early failure can be safe to retry. Once HTLCs are in flight, however, the payment has to resolve before it can be considered successful or failed. If a recipient or intermediary goes offline, resolution may take time, potentially until a timeout path resolves it.
LND’s SendPaymentV2 reference makes a particularly important distinction: its request timeout limits how long the process waits before attempting the first HTLC. It does not abort HTLCs that are already in flight. Those HTLCs continue until they settle or fail. Consequently, an app’s own request deadline, loading indicator, or cancellation action cannot be treated as a substitute for checking the payment’s node-side state.
LND describes the unresolved case as a “stuck payment”: it cannot be retried while unresolved, and the sender must wait for it to resolve as failed or successful. That does not mean every slow payment is stuck in the technical sense; it means that a timeout alone cannot tell the app whether it is safe to send again.

This distinction matters when interpreting the word “timeout.” It can describe the app waiting too long for an API response, an implementation’s send request reaching its wait limit, or an error indicating that no payment is currently in progress. Those situations are not interchangeable. Check whether the node reports an existing pending payment and read the accompanying reason before deciding what to do.
How app developers should track and present a delayed payment
1. Preserve the original payment identifier
When the send request times out or the client loses its connection, retain the identifier needed to look up that same payment. The app should resume tracking the original attempt, rather than create a new payment merely because the response was interrupted. The operational source of truth is the sending node’s payment record, not the browser or mobile client’s timer.
2. Query a status source that includes unresolved payments
For LND, the documentation describes TrackPaymentV2 for tracking a payment and provides a payment-history endpoint that can include incomplete records. Ensure the relevant query is configured to return pending or incomplete records where applicable. Core Lightning documents payment-status monitoring and its paystatus command. These are implementation-specific interfaces: confirm names, fields, and options against the exact version deployed rather than copying an option from a different release.
Also distinguish “not returned by this query” from “failed.” A history request can be filtered, and LND’s documentation notes that incomplete records may need to be included. Before displaying a final result, confirm that the lookup covers the relevant payment and the states the app is trying to detect. The choice of tracking interface should follow the implementation that actually sent the payment; a different node or service may not hold the sender’s record.
3. Keep monitoring while the node reports pending or in flight
Use the node’s tracking stream or repeat a status lookup according to the app’s operational design. Present a pending state to the user while it remains unresolved. A client cancellation can stop further attempts or stop the client from waiting, but it cannot undo HTLCs already sent. The app must not translate “I stopped waiting” into “the payment failed.”
Monitoring can continue after the user leaves the screen. On a later visit, retrieve the payment’s current status rather than relying on a value cached when the send request first timed out. If the app uses a stream, account for the possibility that the client disconnects before receiving a final update; if it uses repeated lookups, make sure those lookups continue to reference the same attempt. The point is not a particular polling interval, which the cited documentation does not prescribe, but accurate status recovery.
4. Treat a final state as the point for reconciliation
On success, record settlement and update the purchase so that the app does not send another payment for the same order. On final failure, preserve the reason and any route-failure details returned by the implementation, then decide whether a correction or guarded retry is appropriate. The exact fields and error representations are version-dependent.

Keep the payment outcome and the purchase outcome aligned. If a node reports success but an order screen has not updated, investigate that mismatch instead of asking the user to pay again. If a payment is finally failed, make sure the app’s retry path addresses the reason and clearly refers to a new attempt. This is especially important where the user may have closed the original screen or returned after an interruption.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Make the user message match the actual state
- Pending: Say that the payment is still being resolved and that its status is being checked. Do not say the funds have returned or ask the user to pay again.
- Succeeded: Show completion and prevent a duplicate payment flow for that purchase.
- Failed: State that the node reports a final failure and give the actionable reason when it is available.
- Unresolved beyond the app’s support threshold: Show the payment reference and direct the user to support or the node operator. Set this threshold as an app support policy; the official materials cited here do not prescribe one duration for all Lightning payments.
A useful pending message is specific about what the app knows: the original payment has not reached a final state, and the app is checking it. Avoid implying that the recipient definitely received nothing, that funds have definitely returned, or that the user should start over. Likewise, avoid displaying a confident “failed” label based only on a client-side error. Accuracy is more helpful than false reassurance when the node is still resolving HTLCs.
6. Keep retries separate from status checks
A status check should not itself create another payment attempt. Build the app’s recovery path so that looking up the original attempt and initiating a new send are distinct actions. Before offering a retry, verify the final failed state and present the relevant correction, such as getting a current invoice or reviewing a fee or delay constraint. If the node still reports pending, keep the retry path unavailable or clearly explain why the payment must first resolve.
Use the failure reason to choose the next step
A final failure is not a diagnosis by itself. LND and Core Lightning document several different causes, and the safe response depends on which one the sending implementation reports. The table gives general handling guidance; it does not replace the details of a particular node’s error response or an app’s fee and risk policy.
| Reported problem | What to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Invoice expired | Whether the invoice is still valid for payment. | Ask the recipient or service for a fresh invoice, then verify its details before paying. |
| Incorrect amount or payment details | The invoice and the amount entered or submitted. LND documents that an underpayment fails. | Correct the details or request a valid invoice. Do not repeatedly send the same incorrect amount. |
| No route | Whether the network can currently find a usable route to the recipient. | If the payment is definitively failed, a later retry may help. Do not retry an unresolved payment. |
| Fee or delay limit exceeded | Whether a route exists only at a fee or delay outside the permitted limits. | Retry only if changing the permitted limits is consistent with the app’s fee, timing, and risk policy. |
| Timeout, with no payment in progress | The implementation’s state and error details: this differs from a request timeout while HTLCs remain in flight. | Use the reported final state and failure information to decide whether a corrected attempt is appropriate. |
| Non-recoverable error | The node’s returned reason and any associated payment or route details. | Do not assume a generic retry will fix it. Escalate to the node operator or app support if the cause is unclear. |
Core Lightning’s error reference distinguishes no route, a route exceeding fee or delay limits, an expired invoice, and a timeout when no payment is in progress. LND’s references describe timeout, no route, non-recoverable error, and incorrect payment details. These categories are not a promise that every implementation exposes identical text or fields.
For a no-route result, waiting and trying later may help only after the original attempt is final. It is not a reason to keep launching retries while the first payment remains pending. For a fee- or delay-limit result, the app should explain the tradeoff before loosening a limit: a technically available route is not automatically acceptable under the product’s fee and risk policy. A change in limits should not be made silently on the user’s behalf.
An expired invoice and a route problem call for different remedies. A new invoice addresses validity and may also carry the recipient’s current payment information; it does not guarantee that a route will be available. Conversely, a route retry does not repair an expired invoice or an incorrect amount. Preserve the reported cause so that the app can guide the user toward the relevant correction rather than presenting every failure as a generic “try again.”

Check invoice validity and routing information
A Lightning invoice carries the payment information needed to send funds. Before a retry after a final failure, confirm that the invoice belongs to the intended recipient and purchase, that the amount is correct, and that the invoice has not expired. LND’s receiving-payment documentation says that underpayment fails and that invoices expire, so retrying the same stale or incorrect details is not a useful remedy.
Routing details can matter too. LND documents that private-channel routing hints are necessary when a recipient relies on private channels. If the recipient’s payment setup depends on those hints, an invoice that lacks the needed routing information may not be usable from the sender’s perspective. In that case, request a correctly generated invoice rather than repeatedly retrying the same one.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When checking an invoice, compare the recipient and amount against the intended purchase before submitting another send. If the amount is wrong or the invoice is no longer valid, obtain corrected payment details from the recipient or service. Do not assume that an invoice can be repaired by changing an unrelated routing limit, and do not assume that a fresh invoice has the right amount without checking it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to retry—and when not to
- Do not retry while the original is in flight or pending. Wait for its state to resolve; a request timeout or app cancellation does not change this rule.
- Do not retry after success. Mark the purchase paid and reconcile any conflicting app or merchant display.
- Retry only after a final failed state. First address the reason: obtain a fresh invoice if expired, correct details if they are wrong, or assess a route or limit issue.
- Apply fee and delay limits deliberately. A less restrictive limit may make a route available, but it also changes what the app is willing to accept. Any adjustment must follow the product’s stated fee and risk policy.
- Escalate ambiguous or non-recoverable cases. Retain the payment reference and node response for investigation rather than blindly repeating the send.
Core Lightning’s pay reference includes retry-period behavior alongside status monitoring and fee and delay limits. Treat any configured retry period as part of that implementation’s payment behavior, not as a universal guarantee about how long all Lightning payments take to resolve. A configured period or a send command returning control does not replace checking the payment’s reported state before another attempt.
Neither the LND nor Core Lightning material reviewed here establishes a typical resolution time or a universal payment-failure rate. An app should not promise that a pending payment will clear within a particular number of minutes unless it has a product-specific basis for that expectation. If an app’s support team sets an escalation threshold, describe it as the app’s own support policy, not as a network-wide deadline.
Implementation references and version caveats
The official LND Builder’s Guide section “Sending Payments” describes invoice payments, HTLC resolution, safe retry before lock-in, stuck payments, and tracking states. LND’s SendPaymentV2 API reference explains request timeout behavior; its ListPayments reference covers stored payment lookup and inclusion of incomplete records. The LND Builder’s Guide section “Receiving Payments” covers invoice information, underpayment, expiry, and private-channel routing hints. Core Lightning’s pay reference documents status monitoring, retry behavior, fee and delay limits, and error categories.
These references were reviewed on October 9, 2026. Because API fields, status behavior, and command options can change with implementation versions, consult the documentation matching the node actually deployed before integrating commands or interpreting a particular error. No official source cited here specifies a single escalation duration that applies to every delayed payment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does an app timeout mean my Lightning payment failed?
No. A timeout may mean only that the app stopped waiting for a response. Check the sending node or payment service: if it reports the payment as pending or in flight, keep tracking the original attempt.
Can I cancel a Lightning payment that is already in flight?
A client-side cancellation can stop the app from waiting or prevent additional attempts, but it does not undo HTLCs already in flight. The payment must resolve before it can be treated as succeeded or failed.
Should I pay again if the app still says pending?
No. Do not submit a second payment while the original is unresolved; it could later succeed and result in a duplicate payment. Contact the app or merchant with the payment reference if the status remains unclear.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What should I do if the payment finally failed?
Check the failure reason before retrying. Request a fresh invoice if the old one expired, verify the amount and details if they were incorrect, and consider a later attempt for a route issue only after the original payment is final.
How long should a delayed Lightning payment take to resolve?
The cited LND and Core Lightning documentation does not set one duration that applies to every payment. An app can define its own support-escalation threshold, but should not present it as a Lightning-wide deadline.
Why can a payment-history lookup fail to show my pending payment?
Some history queries can omit incomplete records unless configured to include them. Use the sending implementation’s tracking or history interface and check its version-specific options; an absent result from a narrowly filtered query is not proof of failure.
The Bottom Line
When a Lightning payment is delayed, check the sending node’s record, not just the app’s timer. Keep tracking an in-flight payment, reconcile a success without resending, and retry only after a final failure and a correction suited to its cause.
