Life insurance is worth considering when your death could leave another person without income, services, housing, debt payments, education funding or money for final expenses. It may be unnecessary when nobody depends on you financially and your savings or other arrangements already cover the obligations that would remain. The right response to an objection is therefore not a sales pitch: identify the financial exposure, decide how long it lasts, compare policies that solve that specific need, and commit only to a premium you can realistically maintain.
This guide addresses the questions consumers commonly raise in the United States. Rules, products and policy wording vary by state and insurer, so confirm details with your state insurance department, the insurer and the contract you are considering.
“Do I need life insurance?”
Start with the people and obligations that would be affected if you died. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) recommends considering dependents, income, debts, continuing bills, childcare, education, housing and final expenses. Its consumer guidance is available in Insurance Topics | Life Insurance and the Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide.
When coverage is more likely to be useful
- A spouse, child, parent or other person relies on your income.
- Your household would struggle to replace unpaid services such as childcare, housekeeping or caregiving.
- Someone else is responsible for a mortgage, rent, student loan, credit balance, business debt or other obligation tied to you.
- You want money available for funeral and other final expenses.
- You need to fund a child’s education or provide housing support after your death.
When the case may be limited
If nobody depends on your income or services, your debts are not transferred to someone else, and savings or other assets cover the remaining costs, you may have little need for individual coverage. That is an assessment, not a universal rule. Revisit it after marriage, a birth or adoption, a home purchase, a major loan, a divorce, a change in caregiving responsibilities or a substantial change in assets.

Estimate the financial gap
- List income and essential services that would disappear.
- Add debts and continuing bills that survivors would face.
- Estimate childcare, education, housing and final-expense needs.
- Subtract existing savings, investments, employer benefits and other resources that would actually be available.
- Decide how many years the gap could last. A need that ends when children become independent may call for a different duration from a need that lasts for life.
Do not assume a standard multiple of salary answers this calculation. The amount and duration should follow the people and obligations you are trying to protect.
“It costs too much.”
Cost is a valid objection, but compare the cost of policies that provide the same benefit, duration and underwriting basis. Premiums vary with age, health, location, coverage amount, term, policy design and the insurer’s underwriting. No single current premium applies to every applicant.
Reduce the mismatch before reducing protection
First decide whether the need is temporary or lifelong. NAIC explains that term insurance generally costs less than permanent insurance, especially in the early policy years. Term coverage pays a death benefit only when death occurs during the specified term and generally does not build cash value. If the need is income replacement while children are young or while a mortgage is being paid, a term quote may fit better than paying for features you do not need.
Ask several insurers for comparable quotes after choosing the coverage amount, term and policy type. “Cheaper” is meaningful only when the policies have similar guarantees, renewal provisions and underwriting requirements. Ask for:

- The initial premium and whether it is level, scheduled to increase or subject to change.
- The highest premium that could apply and when an increase could occur.
- Renewal prices, renewal age limits and whether renewal is guaranteed.
- Any conversion right, its deadline and the cost basis for the converted policy.
Choose a premium that remains realistic during a job change, illness or other budget stress. A policy that lapses because the payment is unsustainable does not protect anyone.
“I don’t understand the choices.”
Most decisions begin with the distinction between term and cash-value coverage. Whole life, universal life and variable life are permanent forms, but their guarantees, charges and policy-value mechanics differ. The NAIC buying tips and buyer guide explain why you should examine both guaranteed and nonguaranteed values rather than treating every illustration as a promise.
| Feature | Term life | Permanent or cash-value life |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage period | A specified term; the death benefit is payable if death occurs during that term, subject to the contract. | Designed to remain in force for life if required premiums and policy conditions are met. |
| Typical early premium | Generally lower than permanent coverage for comparable initial protection. | Generally higher because the policy includes lifetime coverage and policy-value features. |
| Cash value | Generally does not build cash value. | May accumulate a policy value, subject to charges, guarantees, interest or investment performance and the contract. |
| Future cost | May rise at renewal; renewal rates and age limits must be checked. | Premium schedules and the consequences of missed payments vary by policy. Ask which amounts are guaranteed. |
| Conversion | Some contracts permit conversion to permanent insurance under stated deadlines and conditions. | Already provides permanent coverage, but changes, loans, withdrawals and surrender can affect value and protection. |
Questions that make an illustration useful
- Which premium, death benefit and cash value figures are guaranteed?
- Which figures depend on dividends, interest crediting, investment performance or other assumptions?
- What fees, surrender charges, loan interest or withdrawal effects apply?
- What happens if you pay only the scheduled minimum, pay late or stop paying?
- What death benefit remains under each plausible premium scenario?
Cash value is not automatically a guaranteed investment return. Compare the policy’s actual guarantees and costs with the need you identified, rather than choosing a category because it sounds more sophisticated.

Application requirements depend on the policy and insurer. A simplified application may request less detailed health information, but the NAIC buyer guide warns that a policy requiring less health information will usually cost more and provide less coverage than one using fuller underwriting. “No exam” does not mean every applicant is approved, that no health questions are asked or that the contract has no exclusions or limits.

Protect yourself during underwriting
- Answer health and lifestyle questions completely and accurately.
- Ask what records, examinations or follow-up information may be required.
- Read the application and policy before signing, including contestability and misstatement provisions.
- Do not let an agent guess an answer for you; request clarification instead.
False or incomplete statements can lead to reduced or cancelled coverage, according to NAIC consumer guidance. If privacy is your concern, ask how information is collected, stored and shared, then weigh that concern against the cost and coverage trade-off of less detailed underwriting.
“Will life insurance provided at my workplace be enough?”
Employer coverage can be useful, but determine whether its amount and duration match your household’s exposure. Check the benefit amount, whether it is a flat sum or tied to salary, and what happens if you change jobs, retire or take leave. Also ask whether you can convert or continue the coverage individually and what premium would apply.
Compare the workplace benefit with the gap you calculated, including debts, housing, childcare, education and final expenses. If the benefit is insufficient or ends when employment ends, an individual policy may be needed; if it fully covers the need and remains dependable under the employer’s terms, additional coverage may not be necessary.
“Will I get a better deal on the internet?”
Online applications can make it easier to request multiple quotes, but the internet does not guarantee a lower premium or better contract. Compare like policies from authorized insurers and verify the details behind every quote. A prominent monthly price may omit a future rate increase, underwriting adjustment, lower benefit, shorter term or non-guaranteed assumption.

Before applying, confirm that the insurer is authorized in your state and review its financial-strength information through reputable rating companies. Use the policy documents, not only a web summary, to compare guarantees, renewal and conversion rights, exclusions, fees and surrender terms. If you need help, ask a licensed professional to explain differences without treating a recommendation as a substitute for reading the contract.
“I don’t trust insurers or salespeople.”
Use verifiable checks rather than relying on a presentation or a testimonial. NAIC’s 2023 consumer guidance recommends comparing policies, checking the insurer’s authorization with your state insurance department, reviewing policy illustrations and understanding guarantees and surrender penalties.
A practical trust checklist
- Confirm the company is authorized to sell insurance in your state.
- Review financial-strength ratings from established rating organizations, understanding that ratings are opinions and can change.
- Request the policy, illustration and any riders before committing.
- Ask the agent to identify every guaranteed and nonguaranteed item in writing.
- Check surrender charges, loan provisions, fees and what happens after a missed payment.
- Make premium checks payable to the insurance company, not to the agent personally, as NAIC advises.
- Keep copies of the application, correspondence, illustration and issued policy.
Take time to read the free-look or review period stated in your policy. If the delivered contract differs from what you understood, contact the insurer and your state regulator promptly.
“I might not keep paying” or “I can’t afford it later.”
Affordability must be tested against the policy’s future, not just its first payment. For term insurance, ask how renewal premiums change and the maximum age for renewal. A level initial premium may not remain level after the original term.

For permanent insurance, ask what happens when a scheduled payment is missed or reduced. Depending on the contract, cash value may support coverage temporarily, or a nonforfeiture option such as a reduced benefit or cash surrender may be available. These choices can reduce protection and may create tax or other consequences; the contract and insurer control the details.
If a policy lapses, reinstatement may require back premiums, interest and possibly new health information or an examination. The Insurance Information Institute describes these possibilities, but your policy governs. Contact the insurer before simply stopping payment and request the exact grace-period, lapse and reinstatement terms.

| Purpose and duration | Who needs the money, the amount of the gap and the date or event when the need ends. |
| Death benefit | Benefit amount, when it is payable and any exclusions or reductions. |
| Premiums | Initial payment, payment frequency, level or variable schedule and the highest possible payment disclosed. |
| Guarantees | Guaranteed premiums, death benefit, cash value and duration versus nonguaranteed illustrations. |

| Insurer oversight | State authorization, financial-strength information and contact details for complaints. |
Compare similar coverage amounts and durations. A low quote for a shorter term or smaller benefit is not a true price comparison.
What should I know about the process?
- Define the need. Write down dependents, income, services, debts, ongoing bills, housing, education and final expenses.
- Set the duration. Match the term to the years of financial dependence, or document why a lifelong need exists.
- Choose a policy type to investigate. Request term quotes for temporary needs and permanent illustrations only when lifetime coverage or policy-value features are relevant.
- Obtain comparable quotes. Give each insurer the same benefit amount, duration and truthful applicant information.
- Review the contract and illustration. Mark guarantees, future premiums, renewal and conversion terms, fees, surrender charges and missed-payment provisions.
- Verify the insurer. Check state authorization and financial-strength information independently.
- Apply accurately. Disclose health and lifestyle information and ask about any item you do not understand.
- Inspect the issued policy. Compare it with the application and illustration during the stated review period; ask the insurer to correct discrepancies.
- Set a maintenance plan. Store the policy, name beneficiaries carefully, calendar premium dates and review the need after major life changes.
Replacing an existing policy
Do not cancel an existing policy merely because a new application has been submitted. NAIC advises keeping the old policy until the replacement has been bought, delivered and reviewed. A change in health during the process can affect eligibility or price, and surrendering the old contract may give up valuable guarantees or create charges.
Ask for a written comparison of old and new premiums, benefits, guarantees, cash values, surrender charges, contestability provisions and conversion rights. Confirm the new policy is in force and that beneficiaries and payment instructions are correct before requesting cancellation of the old one. For replacement rules that apply in your state, contact the insurance department or the insurer’s compliance office.
A decision checklist for the final objection
- Would someone face a measurable financial loss if I died?
- Have I identified the amount and years of that loss?
- Does the policy type match a temporary or lifelong need?
- Can I afford the stated premium and plausible future increases?
- Do I know which benefits and values are guaranteed?
- Have I checked renewal, conversion, age limits and missed-payment consequences?
- Have I compared genuinely similar policies from authorized insurers?
- Have I answered the application accurately and read the issued contract?
- If replacing coverage, is the existing policy still in force until the new one is confirmed?
Use the answers to decide whether to buy, buy a different amount or type, postpone while you gather information, or conclude that coverage is not currently justified. That conclusion should follow your financial exposure and the contract terms—not pressure to purchase.
