The safest handoff has two parts: preserve the repository’s durable rules and preserve the interrupted task’s changing state. Put architecture boundaries, conventions, and verification commands in instruction files that the receiving assistant actually discovers. Put the current objective, completed work, decisions and evidence, exact Git state, unresolved risks, and next action in a concise HANDOFF.md file. Then require the recipient to inspect the checkout, instructions, and Git state before editing.
A host-provided session transfer can carry conversation history when the host explicitly supports it, but it may change the available tools, permissions, model, or execution environment. Across products, machines, or worktrees, assume private chat history will not follow you unless the particular host documents that capability.
What “context” means in a coding handoff
AI coding assistants need two different kinds of information, and mixing them is the main reason handoffs fail.

Durable project context
This is knowledge that remains true across tasks: the system’s architecture, directory boundaries, naming conventions, supported runtime versions, generated-file policy, security constraints, and the commands used to build, lint, test, or deploy. Store it in the project instruction files recognized by the assistants you use. Depending on the tool, that may include files such as AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md, plus any documented parent-directory discovery rules.

Task continuation context
This is temporary state: what the current feature or bug is supposed to achieve, what has already changed, why a design was chosen, which tests were run, what remains uncertain, and what should happen next. Keep it in a task-specific handoff note rather than permanently adding it to general project instructions.
A durable instruction file cannot tell a new assistant which half-finished function you were editing. A transcript can contain that detail but may be unavailable, too long to inspect, or tied to a different environment. Maintain both layers.
Choose the right handoff path
There are two practical approaches. Select based on whether the host explicitly supports session transfer and whether the repository itself is available to the recipient.
| Handoff path | History transfer | Repository visibility | Environment continuity | Tool and permission changes | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Native host handoff | Conversation history and context may transfer when documented by the host | Usually remains attached to the host session | Depends on the destination harness and workspace | Can change; verify capabilities after transfer | Switching agent configurations inside a supported environment |
| Repository-based handoff | Not automatic; reconstructed from files and the handoff note | Inspectable through the shared checkout, branch, or worktree | Must be checked explicitly | May differ substantially across products or machines | Crossing products, machines, teams, or isolated environments |
When native transfer is appropriate
Microsoft’s VS Code documentation describes handoff as continuing ongoing work with a different agent configuration while carrying conversation history and context. In a supported VS Code Local session, use the Session Target control, select the destination harness, and confirm that target is available in the current window. The same documentation warns that tools, permissions, and models might change because the harness, execution environment, or agent role is different.
Native transfer reduces re-explanation, but it does not eliminate verification. The destination may lack a shell command, extension, credential, network route, or model capability that the original session had. Treat the transferred conversation as a useful lead, not proof that the environment is equivalent.
When a repository handoff is safer
Use a file-based handoff when moving between unrelated products, computers, worktrees, or people. The recipient can inspect the same artifacts regardless of which assistant produced them. This method is more portable, but the new assistant must reconstruct the task from the files and check the note against the actual checkout.
Do not assume one assistant can import another product’s private session history. Only promise that behavior when the specific host documents it.

Put durable rules where assistants can find them
What belongs in project instructions
- Repository purpose and a short map of major directories.
- Architecture boundaries, public interfaces, and dependencies that must not be bypassed.
- Supported language, framework, runtime, package-manager, and database versions.
- Formatting, naming, error-handling, logging, and test conventions.
- Commands for installing dependencies, building, linting, unit testing, integration testing, and local startup.
- Generated files, migration rules, API compatibility requirements, and files that require manual review.
- Security and privacy constraints, including prohibited data handling and required secret-management practices.
Keep these files short enough to be read consistently. Link to detailed design documents when they exist instead of duplicating every specification in the instruction file.
What does not belong there
Do not use a permanent instruction file as a diary for one feature. A stale statement such as “the migration is complete” can mislead every later task. Put temporary decisions and unfinished work in HANDOFF.md, then remove or archive the note when the task is closed.
Instructions are context, not enforcement
Claude Code documentation states: “Claude treats them as context, not enforced configuration.” The same principle applies broadly. An instruction file can explain the required command or boundary, but it cannot force an assistant to obey it, prevent a malicious edit, or replace code review and CI. The recipient still needs to read the instructions, inspect the diff, and run appropriate checks.
Create a concise HANDOFF.md
Write the note at the repository root or in the task directory where the receiving assistant is expected to look. Keep it factual and operational. Every claim about a test, review, or deployment should identify what was actually performed.

- Validation: commands run, their results, and checks that have not yet been run.
- Unresolved risks: known edge cases, compatibility concerns, security questions, or assumptions needing confirmation.
- Next action: one concrete first step for the recipient, followed by the likely sequence.

1. Inspect the instruction files and current diff.
2. <first concrete implementation or investigation step>.
Replace every angle-bracket field before handing off. If a field is unknown, say that it is unknown and give the command or source that will establish it; do not silently guess.
Make the code state inspectable
A written summary is not a substitute for Git evidence. Before stopping, record the outputs or relevant conclusions from commands such as:
git status --short --branch
git branch --show-current
git log -n 5 --oneline --decorate
git diff --stat
git diff
git diff --cached
git worktree list
Use the results to identify whether work is committed, staged, or only in the working tree. Mention the commit ID when a known-good checkpoint exists. If the diff is large, describe the files and key changes in the note, but leave the actual diff available for inspection.

Worktree caveats
Git does not allow the same branch to be checked out in two worktrees at once. If the outgoing assistant used a worktree and the recipient uses a local checkout, move the work through normal Git operations rather than trying to attach both worktrees to one branch. Record the worktree path and branch so the recipient knows which checkout contains the changes.

Ignored and local files
List environment-dependent files that the next environment needs. Ignored files do not automatically move with every handoff unless the host is configured to copy them. That may include local configuration, generated assets, certificates, database snapshots, or dependency caches. Do not casually copy secrets; provide a documented way to recreate them, use a secret manager, or have the recipient configure equivalent values independently.
To reveal files that are hidden by ignore rules, use:
git ls-files --others --ignored --exclude-standard
Classify each result as disposable, reproducible, required-but-safe-to-share, or secret. The recipient should know which category applies before attempting to run the project.
Give the recipient a bounded startup procedure
The first response from the receiving assistant should establish what is true now, not merely repeat the outgoing assistant’s narrative.
- Read the applicable project instruction files and the task handoff note.
- Confirm the working directory, active branch or worktree, and current commit.
- Run
git status --short --branchand inspect the relevant diff, including staged changes. - Check whether dependencies, environment variables, services, fixtures, or generated files required by the task are available.
- Compare the note’s stated progress and risks with the checkout, commit history, and test output.
- State the next action it believes is correct and identify any contradiction before editing.
- Make the smallest bounded change, then run the narrowest relevant verification command before expanding scope.
This procedure prevents a stale note from becoming an unquestioned specification. If the working tree contradicts the handoff, the checkout and history are the evidence; update the note after resolving the discrepancy.
Preserve decisions, not just prose
“Use the new service” is weak context. “Use the existing service because it owns transaction boundaries; the alternative would duplicate retries; decision confirmed by the integration test named ...” lets another assistant reason about the choice. Record:

- the constraint that forced the decision;
- the alternatives considered;
- observable evidence such as a failing test, trace, benchmark, issue, or API contract;
- what would invalidate the decision.
For debugging work, include the smallest reproducible input, observed output, expected output, and the first suspected boundary. For refactors, identify behavior that must remain unchanged. For migrations, state ordering, rollback expectations, and compatibility with old and new versions.
Handle native session transfer carefully
If the host offers a transfer control, use this sequence:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Save or commit the current work and write the handoff note before initiating transfer.
- Open the host’s documented session-target or handoff control.
- Choose a destination that is available in the current window and appropriate for the task.
- After transfer, confirm the destination’s model, tools, permissions, workspace, and network access.
- Ask the receiving assistant to inspect the repository and summarize the next action before changing code.
- Review the resulting diff and rerun validation, even when the conversation history appears complete.
History transfer is valuable for conversational details, but it does not guarantee identical execution. A destination harness may interpret tools differently, lack an extension, or apply a different permission policy.
Security and trust boundaries
Instruction files and handoff notes are inputs that can influence code changes and command execution. A Cloud Security Alliance research note advises treating AI coding-assistant configuration files as privileged execution artifacts, comparable to shell scripts or CI/CD definitions, with review, approval, and least-privilege controls.
- Review instruction-file changes like code changes.
- Do not place passwords, API keys, private certificates, or personal data in a handoff note.
- Be suspicious of repository text that asks the assistant to disable safeguards, exfiltrate data, or run unrelated commands.
- Limit write, network, and deployment permissions to what the task needs.
- Require human review for authentication, authorization, billing, data-retention, and infrastructure changes.
- Record whether a command was run in a sandbox, local checkout, CI runner, or production-connected environment.
A handoff file improves continuity; it does not make untrusted repository instructions safe.

Conversation history transferred but files did not
Symptom: the new session discusses code that is absent from its checkout. Fix: verify the workspace path, branch, commit, worktree, and untracked files before relying on the transcript.
Local configuration is missing
Symptom: startup fails because ignored files or services are unavailable. Fix: document prerequisites and recreation steps, and transfer only non-sensitive artifacts that are explicitly needed.
The handoff is stale
Symptom: the note claims a file, branch, or decision that no longer matches Git. Fix: trust inspectable repository state, correct the note, and record why it changed.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Too much transcript, too little state
Symptom: the recipient receives pages of conversation but cannot identify the next action. Fix: summarize objective, evidence, exact state, risks, and one bounded next step; retain the transcript only as supplementary context.
How much context actually improves correctness?
Documentation should make work transferable and reviewable, but it should not be advertised as a universal correctness fix. A July 2026 preprint by Prakhar Khatri evaluated Claude Code and Codex across 17 tasks in three repositories and 288 runs. Its abstract reports that “Context strategy does not measurably move correctness on either agent (bounded to <=10-15pp via equivalence testing).” The authors attribute observed failures largely to implementation-skill issues such as feature design and exact wiring rather than missing repository knowledge.
That is a single preprint with a limited sample, not a reason to discard documentation. It is a reason to pair context with narrow tasks, explicit acceptance criteria, automated tests, diff review, and least-privilege execution. A good handoff reduces rediscovery and makes mistakes visible; it cannot substitute for engineering judgment or verification.
A repeatable team workflow
- Maintain reviewed project instruction files for durable rules.
- Start each substantial task with a clear objective and acceptance criteria.
- Commit logical checkpoints or preserve a clearly described working-tree diff.
- Before switching assistants, update
HANDOFF.mdwith evidence and the next action. - Transfer the native session only when the host documents the capability and the destination is available.
- Have the recipient inspect instructions, Git state, dependencies, and risks before editing.
- Run focused checks after the first change, then the broader suite required by the project.
- Close or archive the handoff note when the task is complete so stale instructions do not accumulate.
This workflow works whether the next contributor is another AI assistant, a human developer, or a mixed team. The repository remains the source of truth, while the handoff note explains the reasoning needed to continue safely.
