You can make a layered, multicolor paint mask of Grogu—often called Baby Yoda—without a vinyl-cutting machine. The method is to simplify the artwork into a few color layers, cut each layer by hand from adhesive stencil film, and apply the masks in sequence as the paint dries. Wesley Treat’s Make: project tutorial, originally published October 21, 2020, demonstrates the process on a birch-plywood cutout.
What you need to plan before cutting
Start with an image that can be separated into a handful of colors and distinct shapes. Think of the artwork as a paint-by-numbers plan: each color pass needs a mask that either protects painted shapes or leaves the next area exposed. Treat’s example uses image-editing and vector software to isolate and trace shapes, but you can also draw the artwork by hand. GIMP and Inkscape are free software alternatives named in the tutorial.
Print or draw the template at its final size on ordinary printer paper. In the example, Treat converted the color shapes to black outlines and printed the template at a local copy shop. Keep a color copy nearby while painting so you can identify each shape, and consider labeling the mask pieces. A positive mask is applied over a painted area to preserve that color while later colors are added. A negative mask covers the surrounding area, leaving the shape to be painted uncovered. Treat’s project uses positive masking, which can reduce how much vinyl is needed when spray painting because you do not have to cover the whole canvas repeatedly. With a brush, smaller negative masks may be practical because overspray is not a concern.

Hand cutting is the focus here; the tutorial does not provide a controlled comparison of speed, cost, or finish against machine cutting. Choose the approach based on the detail in your image and the tools you have, not on an assumed performance advantage.
Gather materials and prepare the surface
- Adhesive stencil film: Treat recommends Oramask 813 for most paint masking.
- A hobby knife with a sharp, new blade, plus a cutting mat.
- Clear, high-tack transfer tape for larger or multi-part masks; Treat names RTape Clear Choice AT65 as an example.
- A plastic application squeegee, credit card, or plastic scraper for pressing the mask and transfer tape.
- Optional tweezers or a dental pick for lifting small waste pieces while weeding.
- Primer, paint, and a flat substrate chosen for your project. The example uses birch plywood and rattle-can paint; Bulls Eye 1-2-3 is given as a primer example.
Prime porous surfaces, then lightly sand the primer with fine-grit sandpaper as Treat recommends. The tutorial allows a flat material as a canvas, but paint and primer compatibility depends on the specific substrate and products. Follow their manufacturers’ preparation and application directions.

Paint the first color and cut the mask
- Apply the first color. Treat says oil-based or latex paints can work, applied with a spray gun, brush, or roller, provided you follow the paint instructions. His example starts by spraying the board black to cover the character’s small black details.
- Let the paint set. Treat typically waits at least 24 hours before applying a mask. This is a practical recommendation, not a universal drying standard: paint that feels dry to the touch can still lift when the mask comes off. Follow the paint maker’s stated drying and recoat times, accounting for your conditions.
- Position the template. Place the paper template over the stencil film on a cutting mat and hold it with small weights so it does not shift.
- Cut through the paper and score the film. Use moderate pressure with the fresh knife blade. The goal is to cut the paper and score the vinyl without cutting through its backing. Practice on scrap film if you are unsure how much pressure your blade needs.
- Weed the mask. Lift an edge with the knife point and peel away the vinyl you do not need. Tweezers or a dental pick can help with small pieces. For large waste areas, score smaller sections so they are easier to remove. Keep the pieces that must remain to protect the already-painted color.
Transfer and align each mask
For a small, simple shape, peel the mask from its backing and place it directly. For multiple shapes or a larger mask that would be awkward to handle, use transfer tape: lay the weeded mask onto the tape and rub it with a squeegee, credit card, or plastic scraper. Peel the tape away from the paper backing with the vinyl attached.
Before placement, confirm the underlying paint has set. Lay the mask down starting at one edge, press it firmly with the squeegee, and peel the transfer tape back slowly, close to parallel with the surface. If the vinyl lifts, rub it down again and retry. For isolated shapes without an obvious alignment edge, use reference ticks from the paper template to position them. Dividing a large mask into smaller pieces can make both placement and material use easier.

Paint successive colors and reduce edge bleed
Work from isolated details toward broader shapes, keeping the finished color image in view. Treat’s example masks ears and highlights before moving to the dark-green shapes, then applies light green as the final broad area. Depending on the design, you can leave existing masks in place beneath a new mask or remove an earlier one when that makes alignment easier.
On a less-smooth surface, Treat suggests sealing mask edges with a light coat of the color already underneath before spraying the next color. If paint seeps under an edge during that pass, it matches the underlying layer. This is a practical tip, not a guarantee against bleed. Afterward, apply the next color according to its recoat directions, and let it set before masking over it.

Remove the mask and reveal the image
Once the final coat has dried according to the paint instructions, lift an edge of the vinyl with the knife point and peel the mask away. Removing the layers reveals the finished image. Work carefully so the blade does not gouge the painted surface.
