Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted 7 Days to Die servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
To increase a 7 Days to Die dedicated server’s capacity, edit ServerMaxPlayerCount in serverconfig.xml, restart the server, and increase the value in small steps while watching CPU, memory, network use, and horde-night performance. Eight slots is the commonly reported shipped value. Dedicated servers are often reported to handle 16 or more players with sufficiently fast hardware, but there is no official developer capacity table. If Xbox or PlayStation crossplay is required, plan around an eight-player ceiling and keep the server vanilla.
What actually controls your server’s player count
Several different limits are easy to confuse:
- Configured slots:
ServerMaxPlayerCountdetermines how many players the server advertises and accepts. - Hardware capacity: CPU time, RAM, storage latency and network capacity determine whether those slots remain playable under load.
- Platform rules: console crossplay has a reported eight-player limit even when the configuration accepts a higher number.
- Gameplay load: active chunks, view distance, traders, vehicles, bases and Blood Moon spawning can make a full server perform very differently from a quiet one.
Changing the XML value raises the configured limit; it does not add CPU, memory or bandwidth. Treat every increase as a capacity test rather than a guarantee.
The setting to change
Open the dedicated server’s serverconfig.xml and find the property named ServerMaxPlayerCount. Guides commonly report a shipped value of 8. Set the value to the number of simultaneous players you want, save the file, and restart the server so the process reads the new configuration.
<property name='ServerMaxPlayerCount' value='12'/>
The exact file location depends on your host or installation method. A host normally exposes the file through its file manager or configuration editor; a self-hosted installation keeps it with the server configuration files. Do not edit a generated copy while the server is running, because a control panel or shutdown routine may overwrite it.

Configured maximum versus practical maximum
Community and hosting guides report that a dedicated server can reach 16 or more players with adequate hardware. Those figures are empirical or vendor estimates, not an official statement from the game’s developer. A server that accepts 16 connections can still suffer severe simulation delay, rubber-banding or disconnects if its CPU is saturated during a horde night.
Crossplay changes the answer
If your group includes Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5 players, use eight as the planning limit. Multiple third-party guides report that console crossplay is capped at eight players. Raising ServerMaxPlayerCount above 8 is reported to make the server disappear from console listings without an explanatory error, even though PC players may still see it.

Safely raise the limit in stages
- Stop the server cleanly. Use the host’s Stop control or the normal server shutdown command. Never edit the active file while the process is writing a save.
- Back up the configuration and world. Copy
serverconfig.xmland make a separate backup of the save before changing capacity. Keep the previous XML so you can roll back immediately. - Record the baseline. Note the current player count, CPU utilization, RAM usage, network traffic and how the server behaves during a normal evening and a Blood Moon.
- Change only the player limit first. Set
ServerMaxPlayerCountto 10 or 12 rather than jumping directly to a very high number. A single-variable change makes failures easier to diagnose. - Check crossplay before choosing the number. If consoles are part of the group, leave the value at 8. For PC-only play, select the next test value your hardware can reasonably support.
- Save valid XML. Preserve the existing property format, quotation style and closing characters. A missing quote or angle bracket can cause the server to reject the file or silently use defaults.
- Start the server and verify the effective value. Confirm the startup log or control panel shows the intended setting, then connect with one or two clients before inviting the whole group.
- Test at peak load. Fill the new slots during active exploration and again during a horde night. Increase the value only after the current level remains stable.
- Keep a rollback point. If tick rate, latency, memory use or crash frequency worsens, stop the server, restore the previous XML, and restart before investigating other changes.
Hardware planning by target size
No official developer hardware requirement table is available. The figures below come from community or hosting guidance and should be treated as estimates. They describe a starting point, not a guaranteed maximum.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Target group | Reported starting hardware | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 4–8 players | 6-core CPU at 4 GHz or higher; 12–16 GB RAM | Community estimate; heavy bases, long view distances and horde nights can require more. |
| 8–16 players | 6–8 cores at 4.0 GHz or higher; 12–16 GB RAM | Hosting guidance; the recommendation is an opinion, not an official requirement. |
| 16–30 players | 32–48 GB RAM is reported, with a fast multi-core CPU | Community estimate with no official validation; test carefully before promising this capacity. |
One guide lists 8 GB as a vanilla minimum, but that figure is low-confidence and leaves little room for the operating system, file cache, monitoring tools or future world growth. For a public or long-running server, 12–16 GB is a more practical starting allocation for a small group.
CPU: prioritize sustained single-thread speed
World simulation and entity updates can make high clock speed more useful than simply adding many slow cores. Hosting guidance favors 6–8 cores running at 4.0 GHz or above for roughly 8–16 players and advises avoiding older Xeon or EPYC configurations unless their boost clocks exceed 4.5 GHz. That is vendor opinion, not a rule: a newer server processor with lower advertised frequency may still perform well, while background workloads, power limits and thermal throttling can reduce any CPU’s real capacity.

RAM: leave headroom, not just the per-player estimate
One vendor estimate assigns approximately 150–300 MB of RAM per player for view distance, inventory data and active chunks. The publisher and year for that estimate were not identified, so use it only as a rough planning aid. Multiply it by your intended concurrent players, then reserve additional memory for the operating system, the Java or server process overhead where applicable, save operations, monitoring and growth of the world.
For example, 16 players at the quoted estimate represent roughly 2.4–4.8 GB of player-related memory before the rest of the server is counted. That arithmetic does not turn 8 GB into a recommended 16-player machine; it illustrates why the estimate must not be treated as the complete requirement.

Storage and save latency
Fast storage helps with world loading and save operations, but it cannot compensate for an overloaded CPU. A hosting guide claims an NVMe Gen 4 drive can complete the same save operation in 100–200 milliseconds. That number is low-confidence and unverified, so regard NVMe as a sensible latency improvement rather than a measured promise. Keep adequate free space and maintain backups on a separate device or service.
Bandwidth and data-transfer planning
Two vendor estimates are commonly cited: approximately 50–100 KB/s of upload per connected player, and 3–5 TB of monthly transfer for a 16-player server. The sources, measurement conditions and dates for these figures were not identified, so actual usage can differ with activity, view distance, connection churn, updates and the host’s accounting method.

Check whether your host limits outbound transfer, charges by byte, or applies a port-speed ceiling. A server may have enough average monthly allowance but still suffer short bursts that create latency. Monitor upload while several players travel in different directions, enter dense bases and fight large groups of zombies; that is more informative than measuring an idle server.
Settings that reduce load before you add slots
Lower world view distance
ServerMaxWorldViewDistance is commonly reported as 10 by default. Guides recommend testing values of 6–8 to reduce CPU work per player. Lowering it reduces how far each client asks the server to maintain and update world state. Make this change before or alongside a capacity increase, and tell players that distant terrain and points of interest may load less aggressively.
Control the spawned-zombie budget
Sources disagree about the upper bound for MaxSpawnedZombies. One reports 60 as a hard cap, while another warns that values above roughly 80 can cause frame-rate loss and lag. Because the values are not confirmed by an official specification, do not raise the setting simply to make a larger server feel busier. Start conservatively, observe CPU time and simulation delay, and change one variable at a time.
Plan for Blood Moon scaling
Blood Moon spawning scales with the number of players. The default BloodMoonEnemyCount is reported as 8 enemies per player, so a full server can create a much larger combat workload than the same server during ordinary exploration. Test your intended player count on a horde night, not only during a calm day. If the server remains stable for normal play but struggles every Blood Moon, reduce view distance or other load first and reassess the slot count.

A practical capacity ladder
Use a staged ladder instead of advertising your hardware’s theoretical maximum:
- Eight slots: the safest universal target and the limit to use when console crossplay matters. Begin with 12–16 GB RAM and a fast 6-core CPU where possible.
- Ten to twelve slots: a reasonable PC-only test range for the same class of hardware if monitoring shows spare CPU and memory capacity.
- Sixteen slots: a serious target. Use a fast 6–8-core processor, at least the commonly recommended 12–16 GB starting allocation, and test a full Blood Moon before opening all slots.
- More than sixteen: treat as an experimental or high-resource deployment. Community figures reach 16–30 players with 32–48 GB RAM, but there is no official guarantee and gameplay settings become increasingly important.
Do not promise a slot count based only on an empty server’s average CPU percentage. A capacity claim is credible only when the server survives peak player movement, dense bases, combat and horde-night spawning without unacceptable simulation delay.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Console players cannot find the server after you raise the limit. | The configured value is above the reported eight-player crossplay cap. | Set ServerMaxPlayerCount to 8 or run a separate PC-only server. |
| The server is visible to PC players but not consoles. | Crossplay properties, anti-cheat settings or installed mods do not match the reported requirements. | Use ServerAllowCrossplay=true, EACEnabled=true, IgnoreEOSSanctions=false, and remove server mods for a vanilla test. |
| The new player count is ignored. | The wrong configuration file was edited, the process was not restarted, or the host regenerated the file. | Stop the server, edit the active file through the host’s configuration interface, save, restart, and verify the startup value. |
| Players experience rubber-banding or delayed actions. | CPU saturation, excessive view distance, too many active entities or insufficient upload capacity. | Reduce the group to the last stable value, test view distance 6–8, review zombie settings and check network utilization. |
| The server crashes or the operating system starts swapping. | Insufficient RAM or another process consuming the available memory. | Restore the previous slot count, close unrelated workloads, and add memory before trying again. |
| Performance collapses mainly during Blood Moon. | Per-player enemy spawning multiplies the combat workload. | Test with fewer simultaneous players, review BloodMoonEnemyCount, and avoid increasing zombie budgets while diagnosing the issue. |
| Players on older consoles cannot join. | PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are reported as unsupported for this dedicated-server crossplay setup. | Use supported PC, PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S clients, or choose a platform arrangement that supports the older hardware. |
Recommended rollout for a growing community
- Start with a documented baseline: record the XML values, hardware allocation, game version, installed mods and backup location.
- Choose the platform target: lock the server to eight slots if any console crossplay is required; otherwise select a PC-only test target.
- Reserve resources: provide 12–16 GB RAM for a small group, use a fast multi-core CPU, and avoid sharing the machine with unpredictable workloads.
- Reduce avoidable load: test view distance at 6–8, keep zombie limits conservative and use vanilla files while validating crossplay.
- Increase by two to four slots: allow several play sessions at each level, including a Blood Moon, before moving higher.
- Publish the stable number, not the configured number: advertise only the highest level that remains responsive under your group’s busiest conditions.
- Review after updates: game updates, world size, new mods and changed player habits can alter capacity even when the hardware is unchanged.
Decision guide: which target fits your group?
You need PC, Xbox and PlayStation players together
Set the server to eight slots, use the reported crossplay property values, and remove server mods. Do not raise the limit expecting console clients to use the extra slots; reports indicate that values above eight can hide the server from console players.
You have a PC-only group of ten to twelve
Begin at eight, then test 10 and 12 with 12–16 GB RAM and a CPU with at least six fast cores. Lower view distance if CPU use is tight, and validate the largest group during a Blood Moon.
You want sixteen regular players
Use a fast 6–8-core CPU, plan at least the commonly recommended 12–16 GB starting allocation, and monitor memory headroom rather than relying on the 8 GB minimum estimate. Keep backups and a rollback value in the XML.
You are planning more than sixteen
Expect diminishing returns and more tuning. Community estimates cite 32–48 GB RAM for 16–30 players, but no official capacity guarantee exists. Run a controlled test with the actual mods, world and player behavior you intend to support before opening the server publicly.
Final operating checklist
ServerMaxPlayerCountmatches the intended test group.- Crossplay servers remain at eight slots and use the required crossplay, anti-cheat and sanctions values.
- Console crossplay uses only supported current-generation platforms and a vanilla server.
- The active XML file was backed up before editing and verified after restart.
- CPU and RAM are monitored during exploration, dense bases and Blood Moon events.
- View distance and zombie settings are changed only when there is a measured performance reason.
- Upload limits, monthly transfer allowances and storage space have been checked with the host.
- A lower, known-good player count is ready for rollback.
The dependable way to grow is incremental: begin at eight, add slots only for PC-only play when appropriate, tune the workload, and keep the highest number that remains stable during the game’s busiest event rather than the number the XML happens to accept.
