To increase Instagram followers in 2026, make it immediately clear who your account is for, publish original content that gives those people a reason to watch or return, and use your account’s own results to decide what to make next. Reels can help you explore discovery, while Instagram’s professional dashboard offers guidance and personalized tips. There is no substantiated universal posting schedule or guaranteed ranking formula.
What actually helps an Instagram account grow?
Growth is a process of reaching people who are likely to value the account and giving them a reason to follow. A post can attract attention without attracting the right audience; evaluate whether the people reached are a good fit for what you plan to publish next.
- Define the audience: Decide whom you want to reach and what they can expect from the account.
- Make original contributions: Offer a useful point, perspective, demonstration, story, or entertainment value rather than relying on reposts of other people’s work.
- Test formats: Use the format that suits the message, including Reels when video is a good fit.
- Review your results: Repeat approaches that reach the intended audience and refine those that do not.
Meta says Instagram’s Best Practices hub includes material on creation, engagement, reach, monetization, and guidelines, along with personalized tips based on account performance. Meta also said its Reach material discusses algorithms and the relationship between Reels and follower growth. Open the Best Practices announcement for context; use the professional dashboard in your own app for account-specific guidance.

Give the account a clear promise
A person arriving from a single post should be able to understand what they will get by following. Choose a recognizable subject and a specific audience promise—for example, practical beginner cooking advice or short explanations of local history—instead of presenting unrelated topics with no connecting idea.
#1 Best Overall
Make each post worthwhile on its own
Give viewers a reason to watch, read, save, or share the content. A Reel might demonstrate one technique, tell a compact story, or explain a useful idea. A post can offer a perspective or answer a question. Originality does not require a novel subject; it means adding your own explanation, experience, presentation, or creative work rather than treating someone else’s viral post as a growth plan.
Should you use Reels to gain followers?
Reels are one format to explore for discovery, not a guaranteed shortcut. Meta’s Best Practices hub treats creation and reach as related topics, but the sources cited here do not establish that Reels outperform every other format for every account. Choose a format that fits both the message and the audience, then judge it by your own results.
Rank #2
Meta describes recommendation systems as learning from viewer feedback, including whether someone watches a video through or likes a post. That is a general explanation of how recommendations can be refined—not a complete disclosure of Instagram’s ranking system and not proof that any single action independently causes follower growth. Try Trial Reels as an experiment
Meta announced on June 12, 2025, that Trial Reels had been made available to everyone, allowing creators to share a Reel with non-followers first. This can be useful for testing a creative approach beyond your existing audience. Availability and behavior may change, so check your Instagram app to see whether the feature is currently available to your account. Meta’s announcement is Inspiring Creativity That Brings People Together.

When testing, compare concepts that are meaningfully different and inspect the results for your account. A single post or another creator’s anecdote is not a reliable basis for assuming the same approach will work for your audience.
How often should you post on Instagram?
No universal ideal posting frequency is established by the official sources cited here. Pick a cadence you can sustain while maintaining the quality and relevance of the content. Review account-specific performance over repeated attempts, then adjust the schedule if you can consistently make stronger work at a different pace. Avoid treating a fixed number of weekly posts as a promise of follower growth.

How can you use Instagram’s own guidance and results?
- Open your professional dashboard in Instagram and look for the Best Practices area. Meta announced the hub on October 1, 2024, with guidance spanning creation, engagement, reach, monetization, and guidelines.
- Review the advice and performance tips shown for your account. Meta described the hub as including personalized recommendations based on account performance; the guidance you see may depend on the account and the app’s current features.
- Choose one change to test. For example, try a different opening, a clearer demonstration, or a format better suited to the idea. Keep the audience and the account’s promise in mind.
- Check whether the result reached the people you want. Consider the quality of the audience reached and the account’s own performance rather than treating raw reach as the only goal.
- Use the result to shape the next attempt. Repeat useful approaches and revise those that do not connect. Do not infer a universal rule from a single post.
Meta’s October 1, 2024 announcement describes the hub and its personalized tips. Dashboard labels and feature access can change, so follow the current app rather than relying on an old menu path.
Quick Recap
What growth advice should you treat cautiously?
- Guaranteed follower totals: The official sources cited here do not establish expected follower gains for a tactic.
- A secret ranking factor: Meta’s general explanation of recommendation systems is not a complete Instagram ranking formula.
- One perfect hashtag count or posting schedule: The cited sources do not substantiate a universal number for either.
- Copying a viral post: Reposting another creator’s work is not established as a reliable way to build an audience that values your account.
- Buying gear as a growth tactic: A smartphone tripod or external microphone can be useful for recording, but the sources cited here do not show that equipment itself increases reach or followers.
