To grow a giant waterlily, start with hydrated Victoria amazonica seed, germinate it in warm water, then move the seedling into loamy soil in a large pot or planting bed submerged in a warm pond or greenhouse tank. The dependable method is controlled warmth: Kew keeps its growing pond at 28°C, while Missouri Botanical Garden starts seeds in water at 82°F and waits for outdoor pool water to reach 72°F before moving plants outside. Those are botanical-garden examples, not a guarantee that a small home pond can produce the same results.
Can you grow a giant waterlily in a pond?
Yes, if the pond can provide warm water for a sufficiently long growing season and has room for a very large floating plant. In a cool climate, a greenhouse pond or heated tank is the more dependable option because both germination and growth depend on warmth. A typical unheated garden pond should not be assumed suitable merely because it supports hardy waterlilies.
This guide focuses on Victoria amazonica, the giant waterlily most often meant by the common name. It is a tropical freshwater species native to Bolivia, northern and west-central Brazil, Colombia, Guyana and Peru, where it grows in lakes and backwaters of the Amazon basin, according to Kew’s Plants of the World Online. Kew reports leaves up to three metres across. That maximum describes the species’ potential, not a size a home grower can count on.

The essentials are viable seed that has not dried out, warm water, loamy growing medium, substantial water and surface area, and regular feeding. If you cannot keep water warm enough through the growing period, the main challenge is not a special planting trick: it is the climate and the capacity to heat or shelter the water.

Which giant waterlily should you grow?
Check the botanical name before buying or exchanging seed. Victoria amazonica, Victoria cruziana and Victoria boliviana are related, distinct species; they should not be treated as interchangeable cultivars with identical care. Kew identifies V. boliviana as a distinct species named in 2022. Uppsala Botanical Garden grows V. cruziana and reports that it performs better than V. amazonica under that garden’s greenhouse conditions. That observation is specific to its setting, not a universal ranking for every grower.
If you want V. amazonica, make sure that is what the seed is identified as. Kew says it grows its Victorias annually from seed, collected from its own pollinated plants or acquired from other botanic gardens. The International Waterlily and Water Gardening Society described a 2024 distribution of V. amazonica, V. cruziana and the ‘Longwood Hybrid’; that dated example does not establish that seed is available now. Confirm species identity and storage condition with any supplier or seed-exchange contact. No current commercial source or listing is established here.
What conditions do giant waterlilies need?
| Growing factor | Published garden example | What it means at home |
|---|---|---|
| Germination water | Kew germinates hydrated seed at 28–30°C. Missouri Botanical Garden uses 82°F water in a heated greenhouse tank. | Plan a warm, controlled seed-starting setup. These are institutional methods, not one universal schedule or a guarantee of germination speed. |
| Growing water | Kew maintains its growing pond at 28°C. Missouri Botanical Garden grows plants in two to three feet of water. | Provide warm water and substantial depth; do not infer that a small or shallow pond is adequate. |
| Outdoor transfer | Missouri Botanical Garden waits until pool water reaches 72°F before moving plants outside. | Use the water temperature, not a calendar date alone, to decide when an outdoor move is feasible. |
| Growing medium and feeding | Kew plants in loamy soil in a large pot and uses weekly loam and organic-fertilizer inserts. | Use a substantial aquatic planting container or bed and expect regular feeding during active growth. |
| Space | Kew reports leaves up to three metres across; a leaf may grow to about two metres in seven days at peak. | Allow generous open water surface and clearance. Do not size the setup like one for a standard garden waterlily. |
The figures above come from Kew and Missouri Botanical Garden’s published cultivation accounts, accessed in 2026. They are useful reference points, not the results of a controlled comparison of home ponds. The available guidance does not establish a universally sufficient domestic pond size, a home-grower success rate or the energy cost of heating.
Warmth is the key decision
Kew describes greenhouse hot-water pipes maintaining its growing pond at 28°C. Missouri Botanical Garden uses an 82°F heated tank for germination and transfers plants to outdoor pools only once pool water reaches 72°F. These examples show why warmth affects both the start of the growing cycle and the decision to move a plant outdoors.

A heated greenhouse tank or sheltered pond is the more controllable choice where outdoor water warms slowly or cools early. An outdoor pond is a reasonable possibility in a warm climate with a long period of reliably warm water. That is an inference from the gardens’ practices, not a universal temperature threshold for every climate or species. A heater must be chosen for the actual volume and conditions; the cited institutional setup does not establish that a small aquarium heater can heat a garden pond.
Water, soil and room to grow
Kew describes transplanting seedlings into loamy soil in a large pot placed in the pond. Missouri Botanical Garden reports growing its plants in two to three feet of water. Together, these examples support planning for both a substantial planting volume and considerable water depth. They do not specify one container dimension or pond footprint that suits every home installation.
The Royal Horticultural Society’s general waterlily guide discusses loamy soil or peat-free aquatic compost and aquatic baskets, but its ordinary garden-waterlily size categories are not proof that standard basket sizing will support a giant Victoria. Choose a container and growing area for the scale of this plant, rather than adapting a generic hardy-waterlily setup without allowing for the difference.

- Confirm identity and hydration. Obtain seed labelled Victoria amazonica and ask how it has been stored. Uppsala Botanical Garden says the seeds die if allowed to dry, so seed condition matters before you begin. Keep viable seed hydrated rather than treating it like dry seed for ordinary garden flowers.
- Prepare warm water. Kew’s published method uses water at 28–30°C under grow lamps. Missouri Botanical Garden describes sowing in pots of soil submerged in heated water at 82°F. Select a controlled setup that can maintain its intended temperature; do not assume that room-temperature water is equivalent to either garden’s method.
- Sow and keep conditions stable. Follow the chosen seed-starting method and keep the seed hydrated. Missouri Botanical Garden’s account describes sowing in pots of soil submerged in the heated water. Kew describes starting hydrated, pea-sized seeds under grow lamps. These are compatible examples of warm, wet propagation, but they are not identical step-by-step recipes.
- Allow several weeks, not a fixed deadline. Missouri Botanical Garden reports germination in one to four weeks; Kew says seedlings develop over several weeks. Treat those as garden-reported ranges and observations, not a promise for every seed batch. The available accounts do not supply a home-grower germination rate.
- Pot the established seedling into a larger growing space. Kew transplants seedlings into loamy soil in a large pot set in its pond. Move the seedling into an appropriately substantial aquatic container or planting bed as it develops, keeping the root area submerged in warm water.
Do not discard seed simply because it has not sprouted immediately within a few days: the institutional examples allow weeks. Conversely, the documented need to keep seed hydrated means drying is not a harmless pause in the process. If seed identity or storage history is uncertain, establish that before attributing failure to the water temperature or planting method.

How to grow the plant on in a pond or greenhouse
Choose the setup before the seedling outgrows it
Decide early whether the plant will stay in a greenhouse tank, grow in a heated pond, or spend part of the season outdoors. A greenhouse gives more control over warmth and season length, but requires a heating and water system; outdoor cultivation depends on suitable local conditions and timing. Either way, reserve enough open surface for very large leaves and enough depth for the planting arrangement. There is no evidence-based single domestic pond dimension to promise as sufficient.
Use a large pot or planting bed with loamy soil
Kew’s method places the plant in loamy soil in a large pot. This is a better starting point for planning than borrowing the dimensions of a basket intended for a smaller waterlily. Keep the growing container submerged in the warm pond or tank. General waterlily planting advice can inform the choice of aquatic medium, but it does not replace the space and warmth requirements of Victoria.
Feed consistently during active growth
These plants grow rapidly under favourable conditions and require regular feeding. Kew horticulturist Scott Taylor describes them as “hungry plants” and says Kew fertilises weekly using inserts made from loam and organic fertilisers. This is a report of Kew’s practice, not a universal home dosage: the account does not establish a precise recipe or amount suitable for every pond volume. Use aquatic-plant fertiliser appropriate to the system and follow its directions rather than improvising a concentrated dose.
Track temperature and growth, not just the calendar
Warmth governs whether an outdoor move is sensible. Missouri Botanical Garden waits for pool water to reach 72°F before transferring plants outdoors; Kew keeps its growing pond at 28°C. For a home pond, measure the water and plan around the local warm-water window instead of assuming that a particular month will be warm enough. A greenhouse can extend control over the season, although it does not remove the need for sufficient light, space, feeding and system maintenance.

What to expect during the growing season
Kew describes an annual cultivation cycle in which leaf size peaks around June. At peak growth, an individual leaf can reach about two metres across in seven days and last roughly three weeks. Kew’s Plants of the World Online reports that leaves can reach three metres across. The figures refer to different descriptions of potential size and growth; neither should be read as a typical guaranteed home result.
Kew reports flower buds from July, while Missouri Botanical Garden says its blooms run from July through October depending on St. Louis weather. These dates are local garden observations, not a universal flowering calendar. Light, water temperature, the length of the season and greenhouse management can shift timing. Expect large leaves and rapid turnover in a successful warm setup, not a static display of one long-lived leaf.
Flowers open at night. Growing foliage is a different goal from producing seed: Kew hand-pollinates open flowers in cultivation to achieve seed production. If you want to collect seed, pollination is a separate task and should not be assumed to happen automatically just because a plant flowers.
Outdoor pond or greenhouse: which is the better fit?
| Decision | Outdoor pond | Greenhouse or heated tank |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature control | Depends on seasonal weather and the pond’s actual water temperature. Missouri Botanical Garden’s outdoor-transfer example uses 72°F water. | More controllable; Kew describes a heated growing pond kept at 28°C, and Missouri Botanical Garden uses an 82°F germination tank. |
| Season length | Limited by the period when outdoor water is warm enough; the local window varies. | Can be managed more deliberately, as botanical gardens do when starting seed and growing an annual display. |
| Space and depth | Needs substantial depth and open surface; Missouri Botanical Garden reports two to three feet of water for its plants. | Still needs a large tank or pond, a large planting pot or bed, and enough room for expansive leaves. |
| Work and equipment | May need less heating where conditions are naturally suitable, but temperature still determines timing. | Requires heating, monitoring and water-system care, along with light, feeding and adequate space. |
| Best fit | A warm climate with a long, reliably warm-water season. | A cool climate, or a grower who needs more control over propagation and growing conditions. |
Choose based on the water you can actually keep warm and the space you can provide, not on the word “pond” alone. Heating costs cannot be estimated from the institutional examples: they do not provide energy-use figures or a domestic equipment specification. Before committing, determine the volume to heat and seek equipment guidance appropriate to that installation.

Common problems and how to respond
The seed dries out
Uppsala Botanical Garden warns that Victoria seeds die if allowed to dry. Ask about storage before obtaining seed and maintain hydration throughout propagation. If a batch has dried, the published advice does not support assuming that later soaking will restore viability.
Water is too cool or outdoor conditions are unreliable
The gardens’ growing practices use heated water: Kew maintains 28°C and Missouri Botanical Garden uses 82°F for germination. Missouri waits until 72°F pool water for outdoor transfer. If outdoor water does not reach or sustain suitable warmth, keep the plant in a controlled heated environment rather than moving it out based only on the date. These values are institutional reference points; the sources do not provide one universal minimum for every stage or climate.
The setup is sized for an ordinary waterlily
A standard aquatic basket or a compact pond can constrain a plant whose leaves can grow exceptionally large. Kew’s reported maximum is three metres across, and Missouri Botanical Garden’s plants grow in two to three feet of water. Reassess surface area, depth and planting volume before transplanting; ordinary hardy-waterlily guidance does not establish that the setup is large enough for a giant Victoria.
Recommended Free Tools
Growth is less vigorous than expected
First check the conditions that the published methods make explicit: warm water, adequate growing volume, loamy medium and regular feeding. Kew reports weekly feeding and rapid peak growth in its own pond, but that institutional result does not establish a home performance benchmark. The available accounts do not diagnose every cause of poor growth, so avoid assuming that one change—especially a higher fertiliser dose—will solve it.
Flowers appear, but no seed follows
Flowering alone does not establish that seed will be produced. Kew hand-pollinates open flowers for seed production in cultivation. If seed is your goal, account for pollination as a separate part of the project.
Practical checklist before you start
- Confirm that the plant is the species you intend to grow, preferably Victoria amazonica if that is your target.
- Verify that seed has been kept hydrated; drying is reported to kill it.
- Set up warm-water propagation and decide where the plant will grow after the seedling stage.
- Make sure the pond or tank can support the depth, planting volume and open surface this large plant needs.
- Plan how you will measure and maintain water warmth. Do not assume a small aquarium heater is adequate for a pond.
- Have loamy growing medium and a large aquatic pot or planting bed ready for transplanting.
- Plan regular feeding during active growth and allow for fast-growing, short-lived leaves.
- If moving the plant outdoors, use measured water conditions and local climate rather than a fixed calendar date.
Is a giant waterlily a realistic home-growing project?
It is realistic when the grower can provide controlled warmth, substantial water and planting space, hydrated seed, and ongoing care. A greenhouse or heated tank is the more dependable route for cool climates; an outdoor pond is most plausible where water stays warm for a long enough season. Botanical gardens demonstrate that Victoria can be raised from seed and maintained as a seasonal display, but their equipment and growing conditions are not a guarantee of a comparable result in a small domestic pond.
