To estimate a Pokémon card’s condition, inspect its centering, corners, edges, and surface under good light. A home check can reveal flaws, but only the grading company can assign an official grade. PSA, CGC, and Beckett use company-specific labels and criteria, so the same number does not automatically mean the same condition.
How to inspect a Pokémon card at home
Use clean hands, a clear work surface, and handle the card by its edges. Under bright, diffuse light, check the front and back straight-on, then tilt the card to catch surface marks. A 10x loupe can help reveal tiny flaws, but it cannot certify a grade.
- Check centering. Compare the borders around the artwork on the front and back. Uneven borders may affect a grade, but centering alone cannot predict the result.
- Inspect all four corners. Look for whitening, softening, bends, or small chips.
- Follow every edge. Check for rough cuts, whitening, chipping, and fraying.
- Tilt the card to inspect its surface. Look for scratches, dents, impressions, print spots, stains, fading, loss of gloss, creases, and handling marks.
- Look for signs of alteration. Trimming, recoloring, restoration, cleaning, or other tampering can affect whether a card receives a grade. PSA lists alteration and authenticity concerns among reasons a card may not receive a grade. PSA’s grading standards describe its criteria and no-grade categories.
Describe what you can see rather than treating a home estimate as a guaranteed grade. A grader weighs the card as a whole, including its visual appeal and the combination of any defects.
What PSA, CGC, and Beckett grades mean
Each company defines its own scale. Compare the company, grade name, and criteria—not just the number on the label.

PSA
PSA calls its grade 10 Gem Mint and describes it as a virtually perfect card. Its published criteria include four sharp corners, sharp focus, full original gloss, and no staining; a slight printing imperfection may be acceptable if it does not affect overall appeal. PSA’s approximate centering tolerances for a 10 are no worse than 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the reverse. The company says graders may use judgment in borderline cases, including around eye appeal. See PSA’s grading standards.
PSA says it will not grade cards showing trimming, recoloring, restoration, other tampering, or questionable authenticity. Its standards also identify cleaning and altered stock as no-grade concerns; avoid attempting to alter a card before submission.

CGC
CGC distinguishes Pristine 10 from Gem Mint 10. Pristine 10 calls for 50/50 centering and a virtually flawless appearance to the naked eye. Gem Mint 10 is an overall 10 when one criterion falls short of Pristine; CGC gives approximate tolerances of up to 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the reverse. CGC says Gem Mint 10 corners should look perfect to the naked eye and Mint+ under 10x magnification. The full criteria appear on CGC’s card grading scale.

CGC’s scale also maps former CGC Trading Cards Gem Mint 9.5 and CSG Gem Mint 9.5 labels to current CGC Gem Mint 10. This is a CGC-specific update to legacy labels, not a conversion to PSA or Beckett grades.

Beckett
Beckett evaluates centering, corners, edges, and surface as four subgrade areas. Its overview lists half-point grades from 1 to 10, including Pristine 10 and Gem Mint 9.5. For Pristine 10, Beckett specifies 50/50 centering on the front and 55/45 or better on the back; it describes the corners, edges, and surface as virtually flawless under intense scrutiny. How to compare PSA, CGC, and Beckett scores
There is no direct conversion chart established by these companies’ published criteria. In particular, PSA Gem Mint 10, CGC Gem Mint 10, CGC Pristine 10, Beckett Pristine 10, and Beckett Gem Mint 9.5 are distinct grades and labels—not interchangeable scores.

For an already graded card, read the label and apply the standards of the company that graded it. For a raw card, first decide whether professional authentication and grading suit your needs. Then consider the company’s published criteria, the grade labels it uses, and whether its submission service is available. The grading scales do not establish a universal best choice or prove what a particular card will sell for.
Before you submit a card
Check the grading company’s official service page immediately before submitting. At the time Beckett’s page was accessed on October 11, 2026, it said Express submissions remained open while Base and Standard were temporarily paused; availability can change with demand and processing capacity.
