Grade a PS2 game by documenting each part separately—disc, case, cover artwork, manual, inserts, and seal—then preserve those parts with careful handling, gentle cleaning, and stable storage. A visual grade records what you can see; it does not prove that a disc plays, authenticate a seal, or restore originality after a replacement or repair.
The workflow below gives you a repeatable condition record, explains what a commercial grade means, and shows how to reduce avoidable wear without treating cleaning, replacement cases, or encapsulation as a cure for aging.
What a useful PS2 condition record contains
Start with identity before judging condition. Write down the title, PlayStation 2 platform, region, edition or known variant, and every component present. Note whether the disc, case, artwork, manual, and inserts appear to belong to the same release. A label such as “complete in box” is too vague unless you define what “complete” means for that specific edition.
Condition and completeness are different. A game can have every expected component but heavy wear, or look nearly new while missing a manual or containing a replacement case. Record both facts. Also distinguish observation from testing: a bright-light inspection can reveal scratches and cracks, but it cannot establish that the game boots or plays through every level.

Use a component-by-component checklist

Take photographs in consistent, diffuse light: front and back of the disc, the case exterior and interior, artwork, every manual or insert, and any defect close-up. Keep the photographs with the written record and give the file a date. This makes later changes easier to identify without pretending that a photograph is a professional authentication.
How do I grade a PS2 game?
1. Establish the release and completeness
- Read the title and region information on the disc, case spine, cover, and manual.
- Identify the edition or variant, including special editions and region-specific packaging.
- List every item physically present. Do not count a component merely because the release normally included one.
- Compare the components with a reliable reference for that release. Mismatched artwork, an incorrect manual, or a disc from another region should be recorded even if the package looks tidy.
Commercial graders use their own component references and eligibility rules. Correct identification matters because an improper or missing component can change whether an item is eligible for certification and what appears on its label.
2. Inspect under bright, diffuse light
Use a clean surface and handle the optical disc only by its outer edge and center hole. Release the case hub before lifting the disc so you do not flex it. Turn the disc slowly under angled light, looking for scratches, residue, cracks, chips, clouding, or damage on the printed label side. Record the location and character of defects instead of collapsing them into one adjective such as “mint.”

For a case, check hinges, the central hub, tray fingers, spine, and the clear outer sleeve that holds artwork. For artwork, look for fading, moisture marks, trimming, writing, and edge tears. For a manual, count pages, check that staples or folds are intact, and note detached pages, stains, or writing. A tight booklet should not be forced out if removal could tear it.
4. State what you did not test
A transparent note might read: “Disc inspected under angled light; light surface scuffs visible; no crack observed; playability not tested.” If you did test the game, state the equipment and result separately from the visual description. Do not convert an untested visual impression into a claim that the disc is functional.

What does a graded game score mean?
There is no universal number that every collector or company applies identically. CGC Video Games publishes one commercial system: it grades game boxes, discs, manuals, and game-specific inserts on a 10-point scale, including intermediate grades, with 10 as the highest grade and no evidence of manufacturing or handling defects. It uses a separate letter scale for the quality of an original seal. Those definitions belong to CGC; an owner-assigned number or another provider’s number should not be presented as equivalent.

CGC’s published eligibility guidance says an optical disc submitted without its corresponding box or case can be returned ungraded, and missing or improper components can affect certification labels. Requirements, accepted configurations, fees, and handling policies can change, so check the provider’s current pages immediately before paying for a submission.

Clean only when dust, fingerprints, or a deposit needs removal. Every extra handling cycle creates an opportunity for a drop, flex, or new scratch.
- Open the case carefully. Release the hub and lift the disc by its edge and center hole. Never touch the reading surface with your fingers.
- Remove loose dust first. Use a gentle air puffer. Do not blast the disc with compressed air held close enough to force debris across the surface.
- Wipe deposits in a straight path. Use a soft, lint-free cloth and move from the center toward the outer edge. Repeat with a clean section of cloth as needed.
- Use minimal moisture only if necessary. For a persistent fingerprint or deposit, lightly dampen the cloth with deionized or distilled water. Do not pour liquid onto the disc.
- Dry completely. Let the disc air-dry fully before returning it to its case or putting it in the console.
Do not wipe in circles. The National Archives and Records Administration warns that circular scratches can be more damaging than scratches that run from the center toward the edge. Its guidance also notes that “Small, occasional scratches are unlikely to affect readability,” while deeper scratches that affect readability are not corrected by routine holdings maintenance.
Avoid abrasive household cleaners, polishing compounds, aggressive buffing, and routine use of resurfacing machines. These methods can remove material or alter the disc surface, and the archival guidance does not present them as preservation steps. If a scratch is deep enough to affect reading, cleaning will not repair it; record the condition and consider professional advice rather than escalating home treatment.

How should I store PS2 games?
For optical-media longevity, keep each disc upright and individually supported in a plastic case, away from sunlight and other ultraviolet sources. NARA prefers polypropylene cases for optical discs. Avoid bending the disc when removing or replacing it, and keep storage dry, clean, and at a stable household temperature rather than in an attic, shed, or damp basement.

ISO 18925:2013 covers storage practices for optical-disc media, including computer-use discs, while ISO 18938:2014 addresses care and handling for extended storage. Their catalogue entries establish the standards’ scope; they are not a substitute for reading the full standards or for a PS2-specific grading rubric.
How do I preserve PS2 manuals, artwork, and cases?
Cases
Keep cases clean and dry, and support them vertically so hinges and trays are not loaded by a leaning stack. Remove sticker residue only if the method will not damage the plastic or artwork; do not use solvent on a cover insert. A cracked case can be replaced for safe storage, but the replacement is not original packaging and should be noted in your condition record.
Artwork, manuals, and inserts
Handle paper with clean, dry hands. Keep it flat or properly supported, away from direct sunlight, moisture, food, and rubber or adhesive materials that can stain it. Do not apply water, cleaning fluid, tape, glue, or household solvent to a manual or cover. If a booklet is brittle, mold-affected, or water-damaged, stop handling it and consult a paper conservator; attempted repair can permanently reduce both information and value.
The Library of Congress describes careful handling and clean, suitable storage as basic collection-care measures and distinguishes stabilization and treatment by trained conservators from routine owner care. Detailed PS2-specific instructions for deacidification, washing, or custom enclosures are not established here, so avoid prescribing a particular sleeve or chemical without verified conservation evidence.

Should I buy a replacement PS2 case?
A replacement case is reasonable when the original is cracked, missing, or no longer protects the disc. Before buying, verify the case dimensions, spine width, hub fit, hinge design, and whether a replacement includes artwork. A generic case can preserve the disc while making the package less original; record the change and keep the old case if it contains original parts.
If you separate a disc from its manual and artwork for archival storage, use a clear cross-reference so the components can be reunited. Keeping everything together may better preserve the release as a collectible display, while separate media housing can reduce paper contact over long periods. Neither choice restores a damaged component or guarantees survival.

Paid certification is most useful when an accurate, provider-recognized condition assessment or sealed-item evaluation matters more to you than easy access to the original package. It is less useful when your goal is simply to play the game or maintain a private inventory.
- Consider submission when the release is valuable to you, the components are correctly matched, the provider accepts that exact configuration, and you understand the current fee and return policy.
- Prefer an owner record when you need a reversible, low-cost way to track a large collection or when the game is incomplete, heavily worn, or in a replacement case.
- Check seal rules carefully for a purportedly sealed item. Describe visible seams and openings, but do not claim authenticity from appearance alone.
- Understand the preservation trade-off. Encapsulation can protect against handling, but it is a commercial assessment and housing choice, not a conservation treatment and not a restoration of originality.
Before sending anything, photograph every component, document existing defects, confirm the provider’s current eligibility page, and ask how an ineligible or improperly configured submission is handled. Keep your own record even after certification.

Common problems and the safest response
The disc has fingerprints or dust
Use the air-puffer and center-to-edge cloth procedure. Dry the disc fully. Do not reach for polish or an abrasive cleaner simply because the first wipe did not remove a mark.

The disc has circular scratches
Record their location and severity. Circular marks can be more harmful than radial marks, and routine maintenance cannot correct a scratch deep enough to affect readability. Avoid repeated buffing.
The case hub is too tight or broken
Release the hub before lifting the disc. If the hub no longer supports the disc safely, move the disc to a properly fitting replacement case and note that the housing changed.
The manual smells musty or shows mold
Isolate it from clean items, avoid brushing spores through the collection, and seek a paper-conservation professional. Do not wet-clean or apply household disinfectant.

Keep the item in the package if that is your preference, but record the mismatch plainly. Do not describe it as complete for the original edition, and verify eligibility before submitting it to a commercial grader.
A practical record you can reuse
Use one entry per game with these fields: title; platform; region; edition or variant; date inspected; disc observations; case observations; artwork observations; manual and insert list; seal observations if applicable; playability test and equipment, if performed; photographs taken; and any replacement or separation made. Finish with a short, factual condition statement rather than a forced number.
For example: “European release identified by matching disc, spine, and manual. Disc has light radial scuffs under angled light, no visible crack, and was not play-tested. Case has a broken hinge and appears replaced. Manual present with one corner fold; no writing observed. Originality of seal not applicable.” This kind of note remains useful even if a grading company uses a different scale or the item changes hands.
The preservation-first standard
A strong PS2 record is specific, component-based, dated, and honest about uncertainty. Handle discs by the edge and center hole, clean only when needed with straight center-to-edge strokes, store them upright in suitable cases away from UV, and keep paper clean, dry, supported, and unaltered. Treat commercial numbers as provider-specific assessments—not universal truth—and treat replacement cases or encapsulation as choices that protect handling, not repairs that recreate originality.
