Manage product-photo background removal with a small library of destination-specific, versioned presets—not one universal setting. Each preset should identify the marketplace, image role and applicable category, specify the intended background and export settings, and define when a person must inspect the result. Automation is a repeatable first pass, not proof that an image meets marketplace rules or faithfully represents the product.
What each background-removal preset should define
A preset is a workflow default for a particular destination and image role. Keep listing main-image settings separate from ad-creative settings, and create separate presets where category rules differ.
- Destination and role: Name the marketplace, listing or ad placement, and whether the image is a main image or another creative.
- Category and policy: Record any category-specific guidance, the source of the rule, and the date it was last reviewed.
- Background and export: Specify the target background and the required export settings for that destination.
- Review triggers: State which defects require manual cleanup or approval before upload.
- Version and files: Keep the original capture and editable mask. Name output files so the destination and preset version are identifiable.
This governance approach is a practical way to make the workflow reproducible and reviewable; it is not a marketplace-prescribed preset format.
Amazon.com main images: use white as the default, then check the category
Amazon’s U.S. product-image guidance specifies a pure white background—RGB 255, 255, 255—for main images. It also directs sellers to category-specific guidance and says a limited number of product types may use a lifestyle main image. For an Amazon.com main-image preset, set the background target to RGB 255, 255, 255, but treat that as one part of the check. Confirm the product remains completely visible and the edit has not changed its color, shape, details, or included components. Amazon says images that fail technical requirements cannot be uploaded; images that fail product-image requirements may be removed. If a listing has no compliant main image, it may be temporarily removed from search until one is supplied. Build a pre-upload hold or review into the workflow rather than relying on post-upload correction.
Keep listing presets separate from ad presets
An image prepared for a product listing is not automatically suitable for an advertisement. Amazon Ads publishes separate specifications for ecommerce display creatives, with requirements that vary by creative context and placement. When to stop automation and route an image for review
Use these as internal quality-control triggers, not as a quoted marketplace checklist:

- The cutout removes, invents, or materially changes a product detail, color, shape, or included component.
- Edges around transparent or reflective material, fur, mesh, or shadows look uncertain.
- An unwanted object cannot be cropped out without clipping the product. Amazon’s seller photography guide recommends masking and selection tools when cropping cannot remove an unwanted element; ambiguous results still need human inspection. Amazon’s product photography guide
- The destination, image role, or category is unknown, or category rules may allow a different presentation.
- The image is for an ad placement rather than a listing main image, so the relevant ad specification has not yet been checked.
For difficult boundaries, preserve the original capture and use an editable mask or selection for cleanup. Adobe describes Photoshop’s Remove Background feature as a way to isolate products and create white or transparent backgrounds; that is a description of product functionality, not evidence that it produces accurate edges for every material or shape. Make the workflow repeatable from capture to upload
- Identify the destination, role, and category. Do this before choosing a preset. If any is uncertain, hold the image for clarification.
- Verify the applicable rules. Review the current destination and category guidance, and record its source and review date with the preset.
- Apply the matching preset. For an Amazon.com main image, the cited U.S. guidance sets the white-background target at RGB 255, 255, 255. Use the appropriate separate preset for other roles or destinations.
- Inspect the product and boundary. Check visibility, color, shape, included components, and edge quality. Do not accept a technically clean-looking background if the cutout misrepresents the item.
- Clean up or escalate exceptions. Use masking or selection when cropping would clip the product. Route uncertain or material-changing results to manual review.
- Hold before upload until requirements are checked. Save the original, editable cleanup, and version-identifiable output so another reviewer can trace how the image was prepared.
What a preset can—and cannot—guarantee
A named, versioned preset makes a routine edit easier to reproduce and audit. It cannot establish that the correct category rule was chosen, that every edge is accurate, or that the final image complies with a marketplace’s current requirements. No universal preset, complete category-exception list, or comparative software-accuracy result is established by the cited guidance. Recheck the applicable marketplace rules when creating or reviewing a preset, and make the final image—not the automation setting—the object of approval.
