Register an MCP screenshot server, tell Claude or Codex exactly what page and state to inspect, and request a screenshot after each important action. The server supplies the actual browser or desktop-capture tool; MCP is the connection layer. Use Playwright MCP for an isolated browser, screenshot-mcp for native desktop windows, Chrome DevTools MCP for a live Chromium-based browser, or a hosted renderer when you need public-page capture without running Chromium locally.
This guide shows the setup commands, evidence workflow, authentication and localhost decisions, platform permissions, troubleshooting, and a hosted alternative when you do not want to maintain a browser.
What an MCP screenshot server gives an AI agent
Model Context Protocol (MCP) connects an agent to tools. An MCP screenshot server exposes a browser or desktop-capture implementation; Claude or Codex then calls that tool and receives an image it can interpret. Without a screenshot-capable server, the model can reason about text, files and tool results but cannot verify the pixels of a page or application state.
A useful request has four parts:
- Target: a URL, local address, existing browser session, application window or screen region.
- Actions: navigation, clicks, form entries, scrolling or other state changes.
- Capture point: after the action that matters, not before it.
- Evidence metadata: viewport or display, URL, timestamp, and the filename or issue in which the image will be stored.
Tell the agent to confirm that the returned image is the intended page. A screenshot of a sign-in wall, an error document, a consent overlay or the wrong viewport is not evidence of the state you meant to test.

Choose the server by the evidence you need

For most Claude Code and Codex web work, start with Playwright MCP. Choose screenshot-mcp when the evidence is a native app rather than a web page. Choose Chrome DevTools MCP when the question concerns the exact state of a running Chromium, Edge or WebView2 session. A hosted service is useful when local browser installation, CPU usage or network location is the problem.

Codex project setup
From the project directory, register the server with the Codex MCP command:
codex mcp add playwright -- npx -y @playwright/mcp@latestThe command stores a server named playwright. Restart or reload the Codex session if the new tools do not appear immediately. The exact tool names shown by the client can differ, so inspect the available MCP tools before writing a prompt.

For a project-scoped Claude Code configuration, run:
claude mcp add --transport stdio --scope project playwright -- npx -y @playwright/mcp@latestProject scope keeps the integration with the repository that needs it. A user-wide registration is appropriate only when you intentionally want every project to see the browser tools.
Ask for a first, harmless capture
Use a public page for the first check:
Use Playwright to open https://example.com, take a screenshot, and save it as evidence/example.png in this folder. Report the final URL, viewport, and whether the image shows the expected page rather than a login wall or error page.The agent should navigate, call the screenshot tool, save the file and describe what it received. If the file is missing, ask it to list the directory and repeat the capture before changing the server configuration.
Capture a website step by step
- Define the claim. State what the image must prove: for example, “the checkout button is disabled when the address is incomplete,” not merely “take a screenshot.”
- Specify the target and viewport. Include the full URL, whether the page is local, and a viewport such as 1440×900 or a mobile size. For responsive work, request separate captures rather than inferring mobile behavior from a desktop image.
- Navigate through the MCP browser. Ask the agent to open the URL and wait for the page to become usable. If content is lazy-loaded, scroll to the relevant section before capturing.
- Perform one meaningful action batch. Click, fill or select through the MCP tools. Avoid mixing unrelated actions; a smaller batch makes a later screenshot easier to interpret.
- Capture immediately after the state change. Anthropic’s computer-use contract requires an image for screenshot and zoom results and recommends ending action batches with a screenshot so the model can observe the outcome.
- Inspect the returned image. Check the URL, account state, viewport, loaded content and absence of consent dialogs, chat bubbles, error overlays or unexpected redirects.
- Preserve provenance. Store the image beside the commit, test run or issue and record the URL, UTC timestamp, viewport and action that produced it.
A reliable prompt pattern
Open http://localhost:3000/settings in the Playwright browser at a 1440x900 viewport. Sign in only if the test credentials already provided in this session are required. Turn on the “Compact navigation” setting, wait until the setting is visibly enabled, then take a screenshot and save it as evidence/compact-navigation.png. Report the final URL and any error or login page instead of treating it as a successful capture.Do not paste production passwords or API keys into a prompt. Supply test credentials through the project’s approved secret mechanism, and use a browser profile that contains only the account and data needed for the test.

Playwright MCP can open a local development server when the agent process can reach it. Start the application first, note its exact port, and ask the agent to navigate to that address. A complete request should include the route, any required seed data, the intended viewport and the output filename.

Start by checking that http://127.0.0.1:3000 responds. Open http://127.0.0.1:3000/orders/42, wait for the order summary to render, capture the page at 1280x800, and save evidence/order-42.png. If the response is a connection error, report that instead of retrying indefinitely.Use 127.0.0.1 or localhost consistently with the server’s binding. A development server bound only to one interface may not be reachable through the other. If the application runs in a container, virtual machine or remote development environment, expose the port to the environment where the MCP process runs; the agent cannot capture a URL that is reachable only from your physical browser.
For pages that need a build step, wait for the dev server’s ready message before invoking Playwright. Keep deterministic fixtures and disable unrelated background jobs so the screenshot represents the intended test state rather than a race between requests.
When you need an authenticated page
Playwright’s isolated profile does not contain the cookies and sessions from your everyday browser. That isolation is useful for repeatable tests, but it explains why a capture can show a login page when the same URL is open in your normal browser.
Use a test login in the isolated browser
Provide a test account through your project’s normal secret store, then instruct the agent to sign in through the page. Capture the post-login URL and the visible account indicator so you can distinguish a successful session from a redirect loop.
Use an explicitly authorized live connection
If the evidence must come from the exact browser session already open, use Chrome DevTools MCP and configure an authorized connection to Chromium, Edge or WebView2. Close unrelated tabs, avoid personal profiles, and confirm which tab the agent can inspect before granting actions. A live connection is more representative of a user’s current state but less isolated and more capable of exposing private data.
Diagnose a login-page screenshot
- Confirm the URL after navigation; an authentication redirect may have changed the host or path.
- Check whether the session cookie exists in the MCP browser profile rather than your normal browser.
- Verify that the test account has access to the requested tenant, project or route.
- Capture the sign-in page as a failure artifact, then authenticate and repeat the requested capture.
Capture a native desktop window with screenshot-mcp
Use screenshot-mcp when the evidence is outside a browser: a desktop editor, terminal, design tool or another native application. Register it for Claude Code with:

}Ask the agent to list windows or displays first, then identify the exact target by title. Capture a window when unrelated content must remain private; use a region when only one control matters; use the full screen only when the surrounding desktop is part of the evidence.
Platform prerequisites
- macOS: grant the terminal or host process Screen Recording permission in System Settings when macOS prompts for it. Without that permission, the tool may return a blank image or fail to enumerate windows.
- Linux X11: install the utilities documented by the server, commonly
xdotoolandscrot. Confirm that the session is X11 if a capture command works there but not under Wayland. - Wayland: support is partial. A compositor or desktop portal may restrict window enumeration or screen pixels; use a supported capture path or switch to a browser-specific server for web evidence.
Native capture records what is visible. Move notifications, password managers and unrelated windows out of the target area before asking for evidence.

Inspect a live Chromium, Edge or WebView2 session
Chrome DevTools MCP is the right choice when you need browser internals or the exact state of an existing Chromium-based session. It can launch a browser or auto-connect to one already running, and it is designed for controlling and inspecting Chromium, Microsoft Edge and WebView2.
Use it for cases such as checking a console error alongside a screenshot, verifying a network-loaded component, or reproducing a bug that occurs only in a configured browser profile. Describe which tab and frame are in scope. If multiple windows are open, have the agent enumerate them and confirm the selected target before it clicks or types.
Do not treat auto-connection as a shortcut around authorization. A connected session can expose cookies, internal URLs and personal data. Use a disposable profile, close unrelated tabs and disconnect the server when the investigation ends.
Use a hosted renderer for public pages
Site-Shot MCP is a hosted public-page option. Its repository describes real Chromium rendering, full-page capture, country proxies, and ad or cookie-banner removal. It requires a paid Site-Shot API plan and the SITESHOT_API_KEY environment variable.

Design evidence that an agent can trust
Capture after state changes
An image taken before a click cannot prove what happened after it. End each meaningful action batch with a screenshot, and name files after the state they document, such as checkout-address-invalid.png rather than screen1.png.

Control timing
Modern pages render in stages. Wait for a meaningful selector, a known delay or network idle, then capture. Network idle alone can be misleading on applications with analytics or long-lived connections; a visible selector is often a stronger readiness condition. For lazy images, scroll the relevant area into view or use a capture mode that loads lazy content.

Record viewport width, height, device scale and orientation. A responsive defect may disappear at a different width, while a full-page capture can include content below the fold that was never visible to a user. Use separate desktop and mobile evidence when both matter.
Keep provenance with the artifact
Store the URL, timestamp, viewport, browser or service, action, commit and account context beside the image. This lets a reviewer reproduce the state and identify whether a visual difference came from the application or from a changed browser environment.

- Local Playwright: keeps rendering and credentials close to the project and is usually the simplest repeatable path, but you maintain the browser runtime and must account for CPU and memory use.
- Native desktop capture: has little page-rendering overhead because it captures existing pixels, but permissions, display state and platform utilities determine reliability.
- DevTools attachment: avoids rebuilding a session and can reveal browser diagnostics, but it carries the highest privacy risk because it may expose an existing profile.
- Hosted rendering: removes local browser maintenance and can provide country-specific rendering, but requires a service plan, network access and careful secret handling.

For CI, make screenshots deterministic: pin the viewport, seed data, disable animations where appropriate, wait on stable selectors, and retain failed captures for diagnosis. For large batches, use a bounded queue rather than launching an unlimited number of browsers or requests at once.
Troubleshoot common failures
The MCP tools do not appear
Check that the command is installed in the environment where the client runs, that npx can download the package, and that the server name is registered in the intended project or user scope. Restart the client and inspect its MCP log for a startup or JSON-transport error.

The image is blank
For desktop capture, verify macOS Screen Recording permission or Linux display prerequisites. For a web page, check whether navigation failed, the page is still loading, the viewport is outside the visible content, or a consent or bot screen covered the page. Ask the agent to report the final URL and page title before repeating the capture.
The result is a login page
The isolated Playwright profile does not share your normal cookies. Sign in with an approved test account inside that profile, or use an explicitly authorized DevTools connection to the intended browser session. Confirm tenant and role access after authentication.
Localhost cannot be reached
Confirm that the development server is running and listening on the address used in the prompt. Check container or remote-environment port exposure, and try the server’s bound address consistently. A browser running in another environment cannot reach a host-only address from your laptop.

Dynamic content is missing
Wait for a stable selector, scroll to trigger lazy loading, or use a full-page mode that loads lazy images. If a page never becomes idle because of persistent connections, prefer a selector-based wait and a bounded delay.
Wayland window capture fails
screenshot-mcp has partial Wayland support. Use a supported desktop portal or X11 session where permitted, or capture the web content with Playwright MCP instead of attempting a native window grab.
A hosted request fails or consumes an unexpected allowance

Security checklist
- Use disposable or test accounts and least-privilege credentials.
- Keep API keys in environment variables or a secret manager, never in prompts, screenshots or source control.
- Limit DevTools attachment to an explicitly authorized browser profile.
- Close unrelated tabs and hide notifications before native desktop capture.
- Review every returned image for personal data, tokens, internal URLs and customer information before sharing it.
- Record enough provenance to reproduce the evidence without recording secrets.
