You can give a compatible old Windows PC a Chromebook-like experience with FydeOS, but it is not Google ChromeOS and it does not convert Windows in place. You first boot FydeOS from a USB drive to check whether the hardware works; installing it can replace Windows and erase data. FydeOS for PC is available without a time-limited licence, though major-version updates may cost extra, according to the FydeOS edition guide.
What FydeOS changes—and what it does not
FydeOS is based on ChromiumOS and is designed to provide a Chromebook-like environment on compatible conventional PCs. It is a separate operating system, not a Windows setting or an official Google ChromeOS installation. Installing it means replacing the existing operating system rather than turning Windows into ChromeOS.
The “free” part needs qualification: FydeOS for PC can be used without a time-limited licence, but the edition guide says major-version updates may have a fee. Check the current FydeOS edition and licensing information before downloading, since terms can change.

Possibly, but age alone does not establish compatibility. FydeOS for PC has different images for different CPU and graphics configurations, and support can change between releases. Start by identifying the exact processor and graphics hardware; on Windows, FydeOS suggests tools such as CPU-Z, Speccy, or HWiNFO. Then use the current edition selector and download page to choose an image. The selector currently marks Intel Legacy as discontinued, so do not assume it is the right choice just because the PC is old.

Hardware limits to check first
- NVIDIA graphics: FydeOS for PC does not support NVIDIA graphics cards. If the PC also has Intel integrated graphics, the compatibility guidance suggests disabling NVIDIA in BIOS, if that option is available, and booting with Intel graphics.
- Android and Linux environments: FydeOS says these subsystems require a CPU with SSE4.2 support. A machine might boot the operating system but lack these features.
- Everyday components: Wi-Fi, audio, graphics acceleration, touchpad, touchscreen, and sleep behavior must be checked on the actual PC. A successful USB boot does not prove every component works.
See the current FydeOS compatibility guidance and variant descriptions before committing. They do not guarantee that an unspecified PC will work.
What you need to try FydeOS from USB
- A separate working Windows, macOS, or Linux computer to create the installer if the target PC cannot do it.
- An 8 GB or larger USB 3.0 flash drive. Creating the installer erases the drive, so copy anything important off it first.
- Access to the target computer’s boot menu or firmware settings so it can start from USB.
- A current FydeOS for PC image selected for the target CPU and graphics hardware.
The official installation guide recommends balenaEtcher and also permits Rufus on Windows. Follow the guide’s current steps for the image you selected; do not use the USB drive that contains your only copy of important files.

How to install FydeOS from a USB drive
- Identify the target PC. In Windows, note the exact CPU model and graphics hardware. Check whether the processor supports SSE4.2 if Android or Linux environments matter to you.
- Select the correct image. Use FydeOS’s current edition selector and download page to match the PC’s hardware. Do not treat one variant as a universal image for all old computers.
- Create the installer. Download the image and write it to an 8 GB or larger USB 3.0 drive using balenaEtcher or Rufus on Windows, following the current guide. This process erases the USB drive.
- Boot the target PC from USB. Insert the drive, open the computer’s boot menu or firmware settings, and select USB boot. The exact key and menu labels vary by manufacturer.
- Try FydeOS before installing. Use the USB session to test the hardware you depend on: connect to Wi-Fi, play audio, check display behavior and graphics, test the touchpad or touchscreen, and try sleep and wake. Do not install if a critical component fails or if the test leaves you uncertain.
- Back up before installation. Copy important Windows files to separate storage and verify that the backup opens. Review the FydeOS installer’s current prompts carefully: installing an operating system may overwrite Windows and data on the target PC.
- Install only when you are ready to replace the existing system. Proceed using the installer’s on-screen instructions. Keep the USB installer available until you have confirmed the new system boots and the hardware you need works.
FydeOS or ChromeOS Flex?
ChromeOS Flex is another way to give a compatible PC a ChromeOS-like setup, but its requirements and feature limits are specific to Flex—not FydeOS.

Check Google’s ChromeOS Flex preparation guide for its requirements and certified-device advice. Google’s ChromeOS Flex FAQ explains the USB trial and confirms that installation can erase data. Do not transfer Flex’s published minimums or installation behavior to FydeOS; use FydeOS’s own current guide.

When to stop before replacing Windows
- The current FydeOS download page does not offer a suitable image for the PC’s CPU and graphics.
- The PC relies on NVIDIA graphics and you cannot switch to supported Intel integrated graphics.
- Wi-Fi, sound, display, input, or sleep fails during the USB trial.
- You need Android or Linux environments but cannot confirm SSE4.2 support.
- You have not backed up important files or do not want to replace Windows.
In these cases, keep Windows in place rather than treating a bootable USB session as proof that a permanent installation is safe or useful.
