An AI shopping assistant gives better recommendations when you describe the buying decision, not just the product category. State what the item must do, who will use it, your budget, measurable requirements, deal-breakers, and which preferences you are willing to trade away. Ask for a comparison against those criteria, correct any mismatch, and verify live price, stock, shipping, returns, and warranty details on the retailer’s page before paying.
What information makes an AI shopping recommendation useful?
A request such as “Find me a laptop” leaves the assistant to guess the factors that determine a good choice. A useful request supplies the decision context:
- Job to be done: what you will use the item for and where it will be used.
- User: who will use it, including relevant size, comfort, skill, or accessibility needs.
- Budget: a ceiling or range, and whether it includes tax, accessories, or delivery.
- Must-haves: requirements that eliminate a product if it fails them.
- Deal-breakers: features, materials, dimensions, sellers, or policies you will not accept.
- Ranked preferences: qualities you want, in order of importance.
- Acceptable trade-offs: what may give way when two requirements conflict.
- Evidence request: the specifications, reviews, or retailer information the assistant should use to explain its reasoning.
OpenAI’s shopping guidance describes a process in which the assistant can ask follow-up questions, compare attributes, change constraints, exclude products, and suggest alternatives. Google’s examples similarly specify a budget or comparison dimensions such as weight, material, and price. These capabilities are documented workflows, not proof that one wording produces universally more accurate recommendations.

A reusable prompt pattern
Use this structure as a starting point, then replace the bracketed text with facts about your purchase:
#1 Best Overall
- Alexa can show you more - Echo Show 5 includes a 5.5” display so you can see news and weather at a glance, make video calls, view compatible cameras, stream music and shows, and more.
- Small size, bigger sound – Stream your favorite music, shows, podcasts, and more from providers like Amazon Music, Spotify, and Prime Video—now with deeper bass and clearer vocals. Includes a 5.5" display so you can view shows, song titles, and more at a glance.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart devices like lights and thermostats, even while you're away.
- See more with the built-in camera – Check in on your family, pets, and more using the built-in camera. Drop in on your home when you're out or view the front door from your Echo Show 5 with compatible video doorbells.
- See your photos on display – When not in use, set the background to a rotating slideshow of your favorite photos. Invite family and friends to share photos to your Echo Show. Prime members also get unlimited cloud photo storage.
I’m shopping for [item] for [use case/person].
My budget is [amount or range].
I need [must-haves/specifications] and will not consider [deal-breakers].
I prefer [ranked preferences], but I can trade [lower-priority preference]
for [higher-priority one].
Compare a few suitable options, explain how each matches my criteria and
where it falls short, and ask me a follow-up question if a missing detail
would change the recommendation.
The pattern is an editorial synthesis of the documented comparison and refinement features from OpenAI and Google. It is not a provider-mandated formula or a validated scoring method. The value comes from the decision-relevant details you put into it.
How to write constraints the assistant can apply
1. Describe the real job, not only the product name
Start with the situation in which the product must work. “A carry-on for frequent overhead-bin travel” tells the assistant more than “a suitcase.” “Noise-cancelling headphones for a daily train commute” points toward isolation, battery life, comfort, microphone performance, and folding or carrying needs. A college laptop request might need to distinguish note-taking and web work from video editing or engineering software.
Include environmental details that change the decision: indoor or outdoor use, frequency of travel, available power, climate, storage space, or whether the item must be shared. If another person will use it, describe that person’s needs instead of assuming they match yours.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Separate hard limits from preferences
Label a requirement as a limit when a product that fails it is unusable. Examples include “must fit a 22-inch overhead-bin limit,” “must work with USB-C charging,” “exclude fragrances,” or “do not exceed $800 before tax.” Use phrases such as must, cannot, and exclude for those conditions.
Use prefer, would like, or a numbered ranking for qualities that improve the experience but are negotiable. Without this distinction, an assistant may treat every adjective as equally important and return no options or compromise on the wrong requirement.
3. Give measurable ranges
Concrete thresholds are easier to check than broad descriptions. Provide a maximum price, weight, external dimensions, screen size, battery-runtime target, capacity, compatibility standard, or delivery date when you know it. Google’s own shopping examples ask for a laptop under $800 and compare carry-on bags by weight, material, and price.
Define what a number means. “Under $800” could mean the listed price before tax, the total at checkout, or a recurring subscription cost. Say which interpretation you want. For dimensions, specify whether the limit includes wheels, handles, a case, or attachments. For battery life, state whether you mean the manufacturer’s claim or a practical minimum for your use.

Tell the assistant which dimensions matter most. A short ranking is often enough:
Rank #2
- MEET ECHO SHOW 15 - A stunning 15.6" Full-HD (1080p) smart display that's perfect for your kitchen and ready to show you more. Use customizable widgets to keep your day on track, watch your favorite shows with Fire TV and powerful vibrant sound, and enjoy natural video calling, with 3.3x zoom and wide field of view.
- FAMILY ORGANIZATION HUB - See your top widgets at a glance, like your family’s calendars and to-do lists, local weather, smart home, and more.
- ALL YOUR FAVORITES, ALL RIGHT HERE - Built-in Fire TV unlocks endless entertainment, so you can enjoy your favorite content from thousands of apps like Prime Video, Netflix, YouTube, Apple TV, and more (subscription may be required). Fire TV remote included. Plus, now you can quickly add a device to play music with Active Media - start playing a song in the kitchen, then add the living room and bedroom on the fly.
- SMART HOME CENTRAL - Control smart devices with your voice or a few taps using the smart home dashboard. Easily turn on all your living room lights at once or check live camera feeds to see what's happening around your home.
- YOUR FAVORITE MEMORIES ON DISPLAY - Brighten your space (and your day) by turning your home screen into a photo slideshow that displays your favorite memories. Auto curate your images and show off your favorite family memories.
- Comfort for two-hour daily use.
- Reliable compatibility with an Android phone and Windows laptop.
- Battery life of at least 30 hours.
- Lowest reasonable price.
Ranking prevents a low price or attractive finish from displacing a requirement that matters more to you. If your priorities are tied, say so and ask the assistant to show how the tie affects the shortlist.
5. State an acceptable trade-off
Real purchases involve conflicts. Tell the assistant what can give way: “Choose lower weight over extra capacity,” “I will accept a plastic shell for a lower price,” or “Prioritize repairability over the thinnest design.” You can also set a boundary: “A shorter battery is acceptable only if the model supports fast charging.”
OpenAI describes shopping research as suitable for decisions involving multiple constraints and trade-offs, while Google lets users ask for comparisons along selected aspects. Asking the assistant to explain the compromise makes the recommendation auditable instead of leaving the choice hidden in a single score.

Request two to five candidates and a concise explanation for each. Ask for:
- Which must-haves it satisfies.
- Which requirements or preferences it misses.
- The strongest drawback or uncertainty.
- The evidence behind important specifications.
- The situation in which another candidate would be better.
Google’s examples include comparing car specifications and prices, and asking which backpack can hold a large water bottle. The exact comparison columns should follow the use case rather than a generic product template.
7. Invite a clarifying question
End the first prompt with a request for a follow-up question if a missing fact could change the result. Useful questions might concern size, operating system, material, price versus performance, comfort versus style, or whether a feature is mandatory. Answering one targeted question is usually more effective than adding a long list of speculative details.
Comparison dimensions that actually help
Ask the assistant to compare only dimensions that affect your job to be done. The following table shows common axes and the question each one answers.
Recommended Free Tools
| Dimension | What to specify | When it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Maximum total, acceptable range, and whether tax, delivery, accessories, or subscriptions count | Every purchase; especially when a low listed price hides recurring costs |
| Size and weight | Maximum dimensions, packed size, and carrying limit | Travel, desks, storage, wearables, and products used by children or older adults |
| Features | Required functions and useful extras | When similar products differ in capability rather than appearance |
| Compatibility | Devices, operating systems, connectors, standards, or services that must work together | Electronics, accessories, software-linked products, and replacement parts |
| Material and durability | Preferred materials, expected use, weather exposure, repairability, and warranty needs | Travel gear, tools, furniture, outdoor products, and frequent-use items |
| Comfort and fit | Body measurements, wear time, adjustment range, or ergonomic constraints | Headphones, shoes, chairs, backpacks, and anything worn or carried |
| Reviews and evidence | What kind of review signal you want and which claims need confirmation | When marketing specifications do not reveal reliability or real-world usability |
Add warranty, return policy, availability, delivery date, or seller reputation when those factors affect the purchase. Ask the assistant to mark a value as unknown rather than filling a gap with an assumption.

Worked prompts for common shopping decisions
Laptop for college
Find a new laptop for college under $800 before tax. It will be used for
web research, documents, video calls, and light photo editing. It must have
at least 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB of storage, a comfortable keyboard, and a
battery that can cover a typical class day. Exclude models that require a
special charger or have poor webcam quality. I prefer a lighter device over
a larger screen, but I will trade some weight for noticeably better battery
life. Compare three options, list the weight and ports, and flag any
specification you cannot verify.
Google gives “Find me a new laptop for college under $800” as an example of a budget-and-use request. Adding memory, storage, ports, webcam quality, and a stated trade-off turns it into a decision the assistant can evaluate.
Carry-on suitcase
I need a carry-on suitcase for frequent overhead-bin travel. The packed
case must stay within [airline or route] limits, including wheels and handles,
and weigh no more than [weight]. Prioritize low weight, then wheel durability,
then capacity. I prefer a hard shell but will accept a soft shell if it is
lighter and has a useful external pocket. Exclude bags without a repair or
return policy. Compare dimensions, weight, material, warranty, and current
price, and tell me which requirement each option risks missing.
Use the airline or route rather than a generic “airline compliant” label. Policies differ, and the assistant may not know which carrier you will use.
Headphones for commuting
I’m buying over-ear headphones for a two-hour daily train commute. My budget
is $250 total. Noise reduction and comfort are more important than maximum
bass. They must connect to an Android phone and Windows laptop, support wired
listening, and last at least 30 hours between charges. Exclude models with a
clamping fit that is uncomfortable for long sessions. Compare comfort,
noise-control limitations, battery claims, microphone performance, codec or
connection compatibility, and return terms. Ask me one question if a missing
comfort or fit detail would change the shortlist.
Backpack with a large bottle compartment
Find a daily backpack for a 16-inch laptop and a large water bottle. It must
have a padded laptop compartment, a bottle pocket that fits a [bottle
diameter] container, and a sternum strap. My budget is $120. I prefer a
structured bag that stands upright, but I will trade that for lower weight.
Compare capacity, external dimensions, empty weight, materials, bottle-pocket
size, laptop fit, and return policy. Do not claim that the bottle fits unless
the measurement is stated or clearly supported.
Google’s shopping examples include asking which backpack has room for a large water bottle. Supplying the bottle’s diameter avoids relying on vague phrases such as “oversized pocket.”
Refine the shortlist instead of starting over
The first answer is a draft. Read every candidate against your hard limits and identify the exact failure. Then issue a narrow correction:
- Point to the violation: “Option two exceeds my 1.5 kg limit.”
- Restate the priority: “Weight is a hard limit; capacity is flexible.”
- Request a replacement: “Remove it and find two alternatives under 1.5 kg.”
- Ask for the changed comparison: “Keep the same columns and explain what capacity or durability I give up.”
You can also exclude a category (“No refurbished products”), change a threshold (“Raise the ceiling to $300 only if the warranty is materially better”), or ask for a different use case (“Show the best option for occasional travel rather than daily commuting”). OpenAI documents changing constraints, excluding items, and requesting alternatives; Amazon says customers can update details used for personalization and provide feedback.
When the assistant repeats a rejected item, quote the requirement again and ask it to explain why it believes the item qualifies. If it cannot provide evidence, treat the qualification as unverified rather than silently relaxing the rule.
Verify details before you buy
An assistant’s shortlist is a research aid, not a purchase guarantee. OpenAI warns that prices, stock status, and discounts can change or be incorrect. Open the retailer’s page for the exact model, size, color, storage configuration, bundle, and seller before placing an order.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Identity: Confirm the model number and variant; similarly named products may have different specifications.
- Total cost: Check the final price, taxes, delivery fees, membership requirements, accessories, and recurring charges.
- Availability: Verify that the exact variant is in stock and can arrive when you need it.
- Policies: Read the current return window, restocking fee, warranty coverage, and who pays return shipping.
- Fit and compatibility: Recheck dimensions, connector standards, operating-system support, and included parts.
- Seller: Confirm whether the listing is sold by the retailer or a marketplace seller and whether that changes support or returns.
Ask the assistant to identify which facts came from a retailer listing, which came from a manufacturer specification, and which are uncertain. A confident tone is not evidence that a price, stock message, review summary, or compatibility claim is current.

Personalization, memory, and privacy
Persistent context can save time, but it also changes what the service knows about you. Share only details that improve the decision. Avoid entering sensitive information that you do not want stored or used under the service’s privacy terms.
ChatGPT shopping research
OpenAI says Shopping Research can use ChatGPT memory. You can turn memory off or clear it; the feature still works without memory, but with fewer personalized touches. Its shopping guidance says chats are not shared with retailers and recommends checking retailer pages for current purchase details. See OpenAI’s Shopping Research help page for current controls and availability.
Gemini shopping
Google’s current Gemini shopping help says the feature requires a personal Google Account, an age of 18 or over, and Keep Activity enabled. Work, school, and supervised accounts are excluded. Requirements and availability can change, so check Google’s Gemini shopping help before relying on the feature.
Amazon personalization and Alexa for Shopping
Amazon says About You lets customers view, update, or remove details that shape recommendations. Its personalization may draw on shopping conversations, reviews, purchase history, Lists, and searches. The About You explanation describes how to review those preferences, while Amazon’s Alexa for Shopping help covers shopping questions, comparisons, and personal context.
Amazon says Alexa for Shopping is available through its app and website without an Echo device or Prime membership. Echo Show adds a voice-or-touch shopping surface, but the hardware is optional. In a May 13, 2026 announcement, Amazon reported that Rufus helped more than 300 million customers in 2025 research, compare, and buy products; that is an Amazon-reported activity figure, not an independently audited measure of recommendation quality. Amazon executive Rajiv Mehta described Alexa for Shopping as an expert personal shopper that remembers preferences, past purchases, and conversations across devices. That is a company description of the intended experience, not a guarantee for every recommendation.

Common failure modes and fixes
The assistant returns attractive but unusable products
Cause: The prompt describes a category but not the job, hard limits, or exclusions.
Fix: Add the use case, measurable thresholds, and an explicit “must” or “exclude” list. Ask the assistant to mark every candidate that fails a hard limit.
Every option is over budget
Cause: The assistant interpreted your budget as a preference or included accessories and subscriptions inconsistently.
Fix: State whether the ceiling includes tax, delivery, and required extras. Say “do not show products above this total” and ask for lower-cost alternatives if no exact match exists.

The assistant treats a preference as mandatory
Cause: Several adjectives were listed without priority.
Fix: Label must-haves separately and rank preferences. Name the trade-off explicitly, such as accepting a heavier case for greater capacity.
Specifications conflict across listings
Cause: Different variants, measurement methods, or seller pages were mixed together.
Fix: Ask for the exact model number, source for each figure, and a note where sources disagree. Recheck the manufacturer or retailer page for the selected variant.
The answer sounds certain but lacks evidence
Cause: The assistant filled an information gap or summarized reviews without showing the basis.
Fix: Request links or source descriptions for important claims, ask it to label unknown values, and do not treat an unverified claim as satisfying a hard requirement.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
A rejected product keeps returning
Cause: The exclusion was phrased as a casual preference or was lost in a long conversation.
Fix: State the exclusion in one sentence, explain that it is a hard rule, and request replacements while preserving the other comparison columns.
The recommendation is personalized in an uncomfortable way
Cause: The service used saved activity, purchase history, reviews, or conversations that you did not realize were part of personalization.
Fix: Review the service’s memory, activity, and preference controls; remove details you do not want used; and provide only the context needed for this purchase.
A practical decision workflow
For a high-consideration purchase, use this sequence:
- Prepare: Write the job, user, budget, must-haves, deal-breakers, ranked preferences, and acceptable trade-off.
- Discover: Ask for a small shortlist and a clarifying question rather than an unbounded catalog.
- Compare: Require a table or clearly separated bullets showing the same criteria for every candidate.
- Challenge: Ask for the strongest drawback, uncertain specification, and situation in which another option wins.
- Refine: Correct violations, exclude unsuitable products, or change one threshold at a time.
- Verify: Open the exact retailer listings and check current price, stock, shipping, seller, returns, warranty, and compatibility.
- Decide: Choose the option that best satisfies your hard limits and highest-ranked preferences, not necessarily the one the assistant labels “best.”
Copy-and-paste checklist
- What exact job must the product perform?
- Who will use it, and what fit, comfort, accessibility, or skill details matter?
- What is the total budget and what costs does it include?
- Which specifications, dimensions, standards, or functions are mandatory?
- What products, materials, sellers, or policies are deal-breakers?
- Which preferences are ranked first, second, and third?
- What trade-off am I willing to accept?
- Which comparison columns will reveal the real difference?
- What should the assistant ask me before recommending?
- Which retailer details must I verify at checkout?
- What memory or personalization settings should I review before sharing context?
The most reliable habit is simple: give the assistant the constraints that determine whether a product works, make your priorities explicit, and treat the resulting shortlist as a starting point for verification rather than as a final purchase decision.
