A context window is the information a model can use for its current request; it is not a durable memory store. To give an agent continuity, persist selected state outside the active context and retrieve the relevant information when needed. The right design depends on whether information belongs to one conversation or should carry across conversations, and on how durable the storage needs to be.
What a context window does—and what it does not
The context window contains the material available to the model while it handles a request. That can include instructions, conversation history, and retrieved information. When a conversation grows beyond what the model can take in, earlier content may no longer fit. Keeping every past message in the active input can also make requests slower, more expensive, or less focused, as LangChain notes in its short-term memory documentation.
Persistence solves a different problem: it keeps information outside the current request so the application can use it later. The model does not automatically recall everything that has ever been said. An application must decide what to save, where to save it, and what to put back into the active context for a later request.
Choose memory by its scope
Conversation or thread state
For continuity within a conversation, persist that conversation’s state under a thread or session identifier. LangGraph calls this short-term memory: a checkpointer records graph state associated with a thread so the application can continue or resume it. This is useful for conversational context and workflow progress that belong to that thread.

Information shared across conversations
For information meant to remain available across separate threads—such as application-defined user preferences—use a separate store with an appropriate scope. LangGraph distinguishes stores from checkpointers: a store holds application-defined data outside an individual thread’s graph state. Its documentation describes these as complementary persistence systems that can be used together: LangGraph persistence and LangGraph memory.
Scope is a security and correctness decision, not just a storage detail. A conversation record should not become globally available merely because it was persisted. Define which user, application, or thread owns each item, and retrieve it only within that boundary.

Choose how information survives and returns
Persist state with a framework checkpointer
A framework checkpointer can save thread state and restore it for later work. A simple in-process implementation may demonstrate the flow, but it is not equivalent to durable storage across process restarts. LangChain’s guide recommends specifying a database-backed checkpointer for production short-term memory. The particular backend is an implementation choice; the documentation does not require every application to use one database product.
Store files and retrieve them on demand
Anthropic documents a different pattern: its memory tool lets Claude create, read, update, and delete files in a memory directory across sessions. The tool is client-side, so the application controls the storage through its own infrastructure. The agent can read relevant information when needed rather than loading the entire stored history into every request. See the Anthropic memory tool documentation.

These patterns are not competing definitions of memory. A framework-managed checkpointer is suited to saving thread state; a file-based tool gives the application control over persistent files and their operations. The choice depends on the data and the application’s requirements.
A practical design for agent memory
- Decide what merits persistence. Save information that will help a future interaction, rather than treating every message as equally valuable.
- Assign each item a scope. Separate thread-specific state from information intended to be shared across a user’s conversations or across an application.
- Select a persistence mechanism. Use a thread checkpointer for resumable conversation state, a store for cross-thread application data, or controlled files when the application should own file operations.
- Plan updates and deletion. Specify how stored information changes when it is corrected or no longer relevant, and how it can be removed.
- Retrieve selectively. Bring only the information relevant to the current request into the active context. Persistence alone does not make stored information available to the model.
- Match durability to deployment. If memory must survive process restarts, choose a persistent backend rather than relying on in-process state.
What can be established about “how we fixed it”
The cited framework documentation establishes several ways to add persistence, but it does not identify the implementation behind the title’s “we fixed it.” Without details about the application or its code, it would be misleading to attribute the fix to a particular database, vector store, summary strategy, or framework. The reliable general answer is architectural: store the right information at the right scope, make its persistence durable enough for the use case, and retrieve it into the active context when the agent needs it.
