Give an AI agent only the tools, files, records, operations, and network destinations required for its current task—and enforce those limits outside the model. A policy engine, tool gateway, operating system, identity provider, or sandbox must validate every request against the agent identity, initiating user, session, resource, operation, and arguments. Prompts and model-based safety checks can support that control, but they cannot authorize an action.

What least privilege means for an AI agent

Least privilege is an enforced boundary around what an agent may read, change, execute, and send. The boundary should be narrow enough that a mistaken instruction, malicious document, compromised connector, or prompt-injection attack cannot turn one task into unrestricted access.

For an agent, “access” has several dimensions:

  • Resource: specific files, folders, database rows, projects, mailboxes, or application objects.
  • Operation: read, create, edit, delete, publish, send, administer, or execute.
  • Identity and context: the service identity, initiating human, tenant, device, session, and task.
  • Time and audience: how long a grant lasts and which service may use the credential.
  • Execution and egress: which processes, mounts, APIs, and network destinations are reachable.

OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet and AI Agent and MCP Security guidance both place authorization, scoped tools, identity, monitoring, and isolation in trusted control layers rather than in the model’s instructions.

Put authorization outside the model

Every tool call should pass through trusted enforcement code before it reaches a file system, application, connector, shell, or remote service. The enforcement point should verify:

  1. Who is calling: the dedicated agent identity and, where applicable, the human who initiated the task.
  2. Which session and tenant are involved.
  3. Which resource is being addressed.
  4. Which operation is requested.
  5. Whether the exact arguments satisfy policy.
  6. Whether the request is still within the task’s time and approval limits.

A system prompt such as “never read secrets” is useful guidance but not a security boundary. A model can misunderstand it, follow hostile text instead, or generate a tool call that bypasses an assumed restriction. The OWASP Prompt Injection Prevention Cheat Sheet recommends treating authorization as an external control and validating downstream actions.

Design the tool gateway so that a denied call cannot be retried with a different spelling, path format, connector, or shell command to obtain the same privilege. Normalize paths and resource identifiers before policy evaluation, and apply the same policy to direct tools, MCP servers, scripts, and API connectors.

Start with a task boundary

Write a short authorization statement for each job before exposing any tools. It should name the outcome, approved resources, permitted operations, data fields, duration, and prohibited actions. Remove capabilities that are merely convenient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example task statement

Task: prepare a weekly sales summary for the finance team
Allowed resources: /reports/weekly-sales/ and the read-only sales-report API
Allowed operations: read CSV files; aggregate totals; create one draft in the finance workspace
Denied operations: delete, send, publish, change permissions, access customer notes or credentials
Duration: one task session
Network: sales API and finance workspace only

Classify actions separately instead of granting a broad “editor” role:

Action class Typical examples Default treatment
Read Open an approved report or retrieve a specific record Allow narrowly by resource and field
Write Create or modify a draft in an approved location Allow only the required path or object type
Delete Remove a file, record, or deployment Deny by default; require explicit approval
Publish or send Email an external recipient, merge code, publish a page Separate from drafting; show exact destination and content
Administer Change permissions, install software, create identities Keep outside the normal agent role

Use different tool sets for different trust levels. An agent that summarizes documents should not receive the same tools as an agent that deploys code, even if both use the same model.

Create a dedicated, attributable identity

Run the agent under a service identity, bot account, or workload identity—not a developer’s personal account and not a general administrator account. The identity should be independently revocable and easy to associate with every action.

  • Keep the identity out of administrator and owner roles.
  • Give it only the application roles required for the task.
  • Record the initiating human, tenant, session, and task identifier with each request.
  • When acting on a user’s behalf, pass a subset of the user’s grant; never let delegation widen it.
  • Provide separate identities for read-only and write-capable workflows.

Delegation and identity design are covered in OWASP’s AI Exchange General Controls and the NIST discussion of agent identity and credentials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restrict files and tools from a deny-by-default baseline

Begin with no file or tool access, then add explicit allow rules. File permissions should identify approved paths and operations rather than exposing an entire home directory or workspace.

File-system controls

  • Expose only the directories required for the task.
  • Use read-only mounts for source material whenever writes are unnecessary.
  • Exclude environment files, private keys, credential stores, browser profiles, shell history, and unrelated home-directory content.
  • Resolve and normalize paths before checking them, including symbolic links, relative paths, archive extraction paths, and alternate separators.
  • Limit file size, count, and recursion depth to reduce bulk-read and denial-of-service risks.
  • Use a separate output directory and validate filenames before writing.

Tool controls

  • Expose only named functions needed for the task.
  • Use narrow schemas with typed, bounded arguments; reject unknown parameters.
  • Prefer allowlisted commands with fixed subcommands and flags over unrestricted shell access.
  • Separate read, write, delete, publish, and administrative tools.
  • Apply the same authorization checks to MCP servers and remote connectors as to local tools.

Sandbox coverage can vary. Verify whether the runtime boundary actually governs shell execution, file tools, MCP servers, plugins, and network connectors; a sandbox that protects one route does not automatically protect another.

Scope application access and credentials

Choose the narrowest application scope and resource-level permission available. If an agent only needs to read a project’s invoices, do not grant access to the whole accounting system. If it drafts messages, do not grant the ability to send them.

Use short-lived, audience-restricted credentials

Prefer credentials issued for the current task, with a short lifetime and an audience restricted to the intended connector. Revoke the grant when the session ends or the task is cancelled. NIST states that “the ability to implement essential pre-requisites – such as dynamic, tightly scoped, audience-restricted tokens and credentials – exists today” in Back to the Future: Why Agentic AI Needs a Strong Identity Foundation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep standing secrets away from the model

  • Do not put production passwords, API keys, private keys, or refresh tokens in prompts, conversation history, configuration files, process environments, or shell history.
  • Prefer a trusted token broker or secrets manager that authenticates the connector and supplies the secret without exposing its value to the model.
  • Prevent secrets from appearing in tool results, exception messages, traces, and logs.
  • Use separate credentials for development, testing, and production.
  • Rotate and revoke credentials independently of the model and application deployment.

A broker does not make access safe by itself. Its scopes, caller binding, audience, expiration, and network path must still be enforced and logged.

Credential pattern Exposure and control Use
Persistent broad token in agent configuration High blast radius; difficult to attribute or revoke selectively Avoid
Dedicated service identity with static narrow role Better attribution, but remains a standing grant Fallback when dynamic issuance is unavailable
Short-lived task token Reduced lifetime and easier revocation Preferred for bounded jobs
Short-lived token restricted to an audience and delegated subset Limits both destination and inherited authority Preferred for multi-service workflows

Isolate execution and network egress

If the agent executes code or commands, use a disposable container, virtual machine, or equivalent sandbox. Run as a low-privilege user and remove host mounts, sensitive environment variables, inherited processes, and unused device access.

Sandbox checklist

  • Start from an image or environment with only required packages.
  • Mount approved input read-only and write results to a disposable location.
  • Disable privileged system calls and host escape paths where the platform supports it.
  • Disable network access by default; allowlist only the destinations and ports required.
  • Set CPU, memory, process, file-size, and execution-time limits.
  • Destroy the environment after the task and retain only approved outputs.

Network controls must cover every route: shell tools, language runtimes, package managers, browser automation, MCP servers, and connectors. Review MCP servers as code or remote services with the permissions granted to them; pin versions and restrict their file-system and network reach. OWASP’s Agentic AI AAI8: Insufficient Sandboxing describes the threat of tool execution without adequate isolation.

Make approvals meaningful

Require action-specific human approval at consequential boundaries, including deleting data, sending an external message, deploying code, changing permissions, or spending money. The approval screen should show the exact operation, resource, arguments, destination, and material content—not a vague statement that the agent wants to “continue.”

Do not ask for a click on every harmless read or formatting action. Repeated prompts create approval fatigue and can train users to approve automatically. Instead, safely pre-authorize low-risk operations with enforced allowlists and isolation, and reserve approval for decisions that are difficult to reverse or materially affect other people.

An approval prompt is not a substitute for policy. If the user approves a manipulated request, the gateway and sandbox should still prevent access outside the task boundary.

Log, alert, and test the boundary

Send audit records to a system the agent cannot modify. Capture:

  • Agent identity, initiating user, tenant, session, and task identifier.
  • Tool or connector name and exact normalized parameters.
  • Resource, operation, decision, approval record, and outcome.
  • Files created or changed, network destinations, and resulting application changes.
  • Credential issuance, refresh, revocation, and policy changes.

Redact secret values and avoid logging complete tokens, passwords, private documents, or unnecessary personal data. Protect retention and access to the logs separately from the agent.

Alert on boundary violations

  • Attempts to read credential files or private keys.
  • Bulk reads, unusual recursion, or access to a new tenant or project.
  • Connections to unfamiliar domains or newly observed IP ranges.
  • Installation or invocation of an unapproved MCP server.
  • Changes to agent policy, tool schemas, identity roles, or network allowlists.
  • Repeated denied calls that vary path encoding, tool names, or arguments.

Test both allowed and denied behavior

Use harmless test data and instrumented tools to verify that expected work succeeds and prohibited work fails. Include direct prompt-injection attempts and indirect attempts embedded in webpages, emails, documents, tool results, and tool descriptions. Test alternate paths to the same resource, such as a shell command versus a file API, and confirm that the sandbox covers each route. OWASP’s prompt-injection guidance provides a basis for these tests.

Compare implementation choices before deployment

Decision area Questions to ask Safer characteristic
Scope granularity Can policy distinguish resource, operation, user, session, tenant, and task? Resource- and operation-level rules instead of a broad role
Credential lifetime and delegation Are tokens short-lived, audience-restricted, attenuated, and independently revocable? Task-specific credentials carrying no broader grant than the initiator
Boundary coverage Does isolation cover shell, file tools, MCP servers, connectors, and egress? One consistently enforced boundary across every execution path
Approval quality Does the approver see exact arguments and destinations without being prompted for routine work? Approval at irreversible boundaries, allowlists for low-risk actions
Auditability Are events attributable, centrally retained, tamper-resistant, and redacted? Independent logs containing normalized parameters and outcomes

Common failure modes and fixes

The agent uses a human administrator account

Why it fails: Every tool inherits excessive privileges, and actions are difficult to attribute. Fix: create a dedicated low-privilege identity and record the initiating user and session.

A system prompt says “do not access secrets”

Why it fails: Instructions can be misunderstood or overridden by hostile content. Fix: remove secret paths and credentials from the reachable environment, then enforce denial in the gateway and operating system.

The agent receives an unrestricted shell

Why it fails: A shell can discover files, invoke new interpreters, install software, and open network connections outside the intended tool policy. Fix: replace it with allowlisted commands in a disposable sandbox, or constrain shell capabilities with an independent policy layer.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only the main process is sandboxed

Why it fails: An MCP server, browser, plugin, or connector may still have host or network access. Fix: inventory every route to files and services and verify enforcement for each one.

Every action requires approval

Why it fails: Users stop reading prompts. Fix: pre-authorize bounded low-risk actions and require detailed approval only for destructive, external, financial, permission-changing, or deployment operations.

Logs contain credentials

Why it fails: Debug output becomes a second secret store. Fix: redact values before emission, restrict log access, and send records to infrastructure outside the agent’s control.

A deployment checklist

  • Document the task outcome, approved resources, operations, duration, and prohibited actions.
  • Create a dedicated, revocable, non-administrator identity.
  • Bind each request to the initiating user, tenant, session, and task.
  • Start from deny and explicitly allow tools, paths, fields, commands, and destinations.
  • Separate read-only, write, delete, publish, and administrative capabilities.
  • Exclude credential files, private keys, environment files, shell history, and unrelated home directories.
  • Use short-lived, audience-restricted credentials supplied through a trusted broker when possible.
  • Run code in a disposable low-privilege sandbox with no unnecessary mounts or network access.
  • Review and pin MCP servers and apply the same restrictions to their tools.
  • Require exact, action-specific approval for irreversible or externally visible operations.
  • Centralize redacted logs and alert on unusual reads, destinations, policy changes, and repeated denials.
  • Test allowed, denied, alternate-path, direct-injection, and indirect-injection cases before production and after policy changes.

This design limits blast radius even when the model makes a mistake or untrusted content attempts to steer it: the model can propose an action, but only the enforced identity, policy, sandbox, and approval layers can authorize and execute it.
