Give the agent the smallest possible workspace, identity, data set and action set, then put a human and deterministic controls between it and consequential operations. For computer-use workflows, run the agent in a virtual machine that contains no sensitive data or critical resources, or use an isolated agent account and workspace where its folder requests can be reviewed. Allow only task-specific applications and files, keep credentials out of reach, require approval before external or destructive actions, treat everything displayed in an app as untrusted input, and log enough detail to revoke access quickly.

No sandbox is automatically safe. The boundary may be a process, workspace, account or virtual machine, and each has different escape paths. The following design lets you match the boundary to the sensitivity of the work instead of assuming that a product label such as “sandbox” means complete isolation.

Why desktop access can expose more than you intended

A desktop agent does not see only the button or document you meant it to use. It may encounter email, web pages, files, notifications, saved sessions and dialog boxes containing instructions. Those instructions can be malicious. Microsoft describes this threat as cross-prompt injection (XPIA): content shown through a user interface attempts to override the agent’s original instructions and cause unintended actions, such as sending data elsewhere or installing malware. Read the warning in Microsoft’s guidance on reducing risk in autonomous agentic AI systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That means confidentiality is not solved by telling the model “do not leak data.” A hostile document can ask it to upload a file, a web page can direct it to enter credentials, and a convincing approval dialog can encourage an operator to accept an unsafe action. Your design must limit what the agent can reach even when its instructions are manipulated.

Four boundaries to define before deployment

  • Data boundary: the exact files, records and secrets the task needs.
  • Application boundary: the programs and integrations the agent may open.
  • Action boundary: operations it may perform, such as reading, editing, sending, deleting or purchasing.
  • Network and identity boundary: destinations, accounts and credentials available to the process.

Write these boundaries down. If you cannot name an item, it should not be available by default.

Use least privilege and isolation together

Isolation reduces the blast radius if the agent is tricked or compromised; least privilege reduces what it can do inside that boundary. Microsoft’s agent guidance says to grant only the tools, data and operations necessary for the task, with other access denied by default. It also says an agent must not receive permissions exceeding those of the initiating user, including administrative rights; authorized privileges should be granular, specific and time bound. See Least privilege for AI agents with Microsoft Entra Agent ID.

Use both controls because either one can fail independently. A tightly scoped agent account is still risky if it runs in a desktop containing a browser signed in to a financial service. A clean virtual machine is still risky if you give the agent a reusable administrator token and unrestricted network egress.

Choose an execution boundary

Select the strongest practical boundary for the data involved. These options are not interchangeable guarantees; compare what is isolated, which files remain reachable, how network access is constrained, how writes are approved, and how access is revoked.

Option What it provides Checks and limitations Appropriate use
Virtual machine for computer use Microsoft’s documented recommendation for computer-use tooling: run the tool in a VM with no access to sensitive data or critical resources. Configure the VM so sensitive files, credentials and unrestricted connections are not passed into it. A VM configuration is not automatically safe. Computer-use tasks that need a desktop but can work with synthetic, copied or otherwise non-sensitive data.
Separate Windows agent account and workspace The experimental Windows feature creates a separate agent account and desktop with scoped authorization. It is a preview feature. Agent apps may request access to Documents, Downloads, Desktop, Music, Pictures and Videos. Preview builds 26100.7344 and later add per-agent management for those folders; verify the controls in your installed build. Personal workflows where a separate profile is useful and the requested folders can be reviewed individually.
VS Code agent sandbox OS-level limits on shell execution and child processes, with separate controls for tool permissions and file scope. The documentation says it is not a virtual machine, not a user-account boundary, not a standalone security boundary and not a replacement for endpoint security. Injected credentials, allowed paths, local network access and unsandboxed fallback change the effective boundary. Development tasks where the main risk is shell and child-process execution, provided endpoint controls remain active.
Enterprise identity and governance controls Dedicated identity, effective-permission review, action logging, ownership and tested revocation. These controls require operational ownership and review; they do not by themselves isolate a desktop or prevent a malicious file from influencing the agent. Organizations that need attribution, policy enforcement and an auditable stop path across many agents.

Microsoft’s computer-use documentation states: “Use the computer use tool on virtual machines with no access to sensitive data or critical resources.” Read the full recommendation in the computer use tool documentation. Treat its safety checks, such as warnings about malicious instructions or sensitive domains, as safeguards rather than guarantees; the same documentation places responsibility for security and privacy on the user.

Step-by-step: build a restricted desktop workflow

1. Write the task contract

Describe the job in operational terms before creating an account or connecting an app. Record the purpose, approved data, tools, operating environment, owner and expiration date. For example, “open the test invoicing application, read three synthetic invoices and export a summary to the local review folder” is enforceable; “manage invoices” is not.

  • List every application the agent may launch.
  • Name the folders, records or APIs it may read and write.
  • Separate read-only work from editing, sending, deleting or publishing.
  • Identify destinations the agent must never contact, such as personal mail, production administration panels or payment sites.
  • State whether data may leave the environment and the exact approved destinations.

Use this contract as the reference for permissions, tests and later reviews. If the workflow changes, update the contract before expanding access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Put the agent in an appropriate environment

For computer-use workflows, start with a virtual machine containing no sensitive data or critical resources. Do not mount a host home directory, synchronize a personal cloud drive, or copy browser profiles into the VM unless the task explicitly requires a specific, sanitized item. Keep production credentials and recovery codes outside the image.

If you use Windows’ experimental agent workspace, treat it as a separate account and desktop, not as a promise that every personal folder is hidden. The feature can request access to six common profile folders—Documents, Downloads, Desktop, Music, Pictures and Videos. Review each consent request and use the per-agent controls available in preview build 26100.7344 or later. Details and availability are documented on Microsoft Support’s Experimental Agentic Features page.

3. Create a dedicated identity

Give the agent its own account or service identity with a named human owner. Avoid sharing a personal login: shared credentials make it difficult to determine which actions were automated and make revocation disruptive. Grant only the roles required by the task, prefer read-only permissions where possible, and avoid local or cloud administrator rights.

Use temporary elevation for exceptional operations. A permission that expires at the end of a run is safer than a standing role that remains usable after the project changes. Keep secrets in a controlled secret store or injected, short-lived token mechanism rather than in files the agent can browse.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Approve tools and paths explicitly

Maintain an allowlist of applications, integrations, commands and file paths. Deny unlisted tools by default. A file permission alone is not enough if a different tool can copy the same data to a network location; review the combined effect of filesystem, process and network permissions.

For development sandboxes, inspect the configured allowed paths, local network access, injected credentials and what happens when a tool cannot run inside the sandbox. The VS Code agent security documentation explains that non-process tools have separate permissions and that an unsandboxed fallback can materially weaken the boundary.

5. Keep high-impact decisions outside the model

Require an explicit human decision before an action can send information externally, make a purchase, delete or publish content, change security settings, alter production data, or disclose a secret. The approval should show the exact destination, data, account and operation, not merely a generic “Allow” button.

Enforce the rule in the application or tool layer with deterministic validation. A prompt that says “ask for approval” and a model-generated explanation are not enforcement boundaries. Check the request against an allowlist, require the approved identity, and make the approval expire if the operation is not executed promptly.

6. Treat everything the agent sees as untrusted data

Classify web pages, email, documents, images, chat messages and application dialogs as data, never as authority. Filter or flag suspicious instructions, especially requests to reveal system prompts, upload files, disable security controls or visit an unrelated domain. Limit the agent’s tools so a malicious instruction cannot directly perform the requested side effect.

Test indirect prompt-injection scenarios deliberately: place a fake instruction in a document, load a page containing an exfiltration request, and present a dialog that asks for a credential. The expected result is that the agent stops, reports the conflict and requests a human decision rather than following the embedded text.

7. Log the complete action chain

Keep records that connect the agent identity to its authorization, tool calls, accessed resources and downstream decisions. At minimum, capture:

  • agent and human owner identities;
  • authorization scope and expiration;
  • session start and stop times;
  • application launches and tool calls;
  • files, records, URLs and destinations accessed;
  • approval requests, approver identity and decision;
  • outputs, transfers, errors and fallback to unsandboxed execution.

Protect logs from modification and restrict who can read them because they may contain sensitive paths or metadata. Logging without an owner who reviews it is not effective governance.

8. Rehearse the stop path

Before production use, practice disabling the agent, invalidating its tokens, removing folder and application permissions, and stopping active sessions. Record how long each action takes and who is authorized to perform it. Include a test for stale permissions after a workflow or team member changes.

9. Review whenever the workflow changes

Reassess the task contract after adding an app, changing a data source, enabling a new integration, moving from test to production, or changing the execution environment. For enterprise deployments, classify the data and apply your organization’s governance, retention and incident-response policies. Microsoft’s guidance on securing autonomous agentic AI systems emphasizes ongoing controls rather than a one-time configuration.

Design the approval gate around consequences

Operation Default agent permission Required control
Read an approved local file Allow when the path and file type are in scope. Path allowlist and logging.
Edit a working copy Allow only in a task workspace. Versioning or rollback and a path restriction.
Send data to an external service Deny unless the destination and fields are pre-approved. Human approval showing the exact payload and destination.
Delete, publish or change security settings Deny by default. Human approval plus deterministic policy validation and an audit record.
Use a credential or elevate privileges Deny standing access. Short-lived, task-scoped elevation with automatic expiry.

This split keeps routine, reversible work fast while reserving irreversible or externally visible actions for a person. The human should approve a concrete operation after the system has validated scope; the model should not decide that an approval is unnecessary.

Environment-specific cautions

Virtual machines

Use a minimal image, separate account and synthetic or sanitized data. Disable shared clipboard, drag-and-drop, host folder mounts and shared browser profiles unless each is required and monitored. Restrict outbound connections to approved destinations where the task permits. Snapshot the image before a run so you can discard changes and investigate unexpected files. These measures implement the documented VM recommendation; they do not turn every VM network or integration setting into a guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows experimental agent workspace

Keep the preview status in mind: behavior and controls may change. Review every request for Documents, Downloads, Desktop, Music, Pictures and Videos. Remove consent after the task, and do not assume that a separate desktop prevents access through a connected account or network share. Recheck settings after Windows or the agent feature updates.

VS Code agent sandbox

Use the sandbox for the execution path it actually protects, chiefly shell commands and child processes. Review file-scope and tool permissions separately. Confirm whether local network access is enabled, which credentials are injected, which paths are allowed, and whether a failed sandbox operation can fall back to unsandboxed execution. Keep endpoint protection and normal account controls enabled because the documentation explicitly says the sandbox is not a VM, account boundary or standalone security boundary.

Enterprise identity and governance

Assign an owner for each agent, review effective permissions rather than requested permissions, and make revocation part of offboarding and incident response. Correlate agent activity with the human or service identity that authorized it. Governance provides attribution and a repeatable control process, while isolation protects the desktop; use both.

Test before allowing real data

  1. Boundary test: attempt to open an unapproved folder, launch an unapproved application and reach an unapproved network destination. Each attempt should be blocked and logged.
  2. Injection test: place instructions in a document, page and dialog that conflict with the task. The agent should treat them as untrusted and stop or request approval.
  3. Credential test: verify that no browser profile, environment variable, token cache or shared secret is visible unless explicitly required.
  4. Approval test: submit a send, delete, purchase or security-change operation. Confirm that deterministic validation and a human approval are both required.
  5. Recovery test: revoke the identity during a session, invalidate tokens and remove folder consent. Confirm that new actions fail and that the event is recorded.
  6. Logging test: trace one session from agent identity through tool call, resource access, approval and output.

Run these tests again after major updates or scope changes. A passing test describes the tested configuration, not every future configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
The agent can browse personal files. A home directory, cloud drive or broad folder consent is available. Remove the mount or consent, create a task workspace, and re-test each path.
A document causes an unexpected tool call. Application content was treated as an instruction. Mark UI content as untrusted, add injection tests and require approval for the resulting side effect.
A sandboxed command reaches the network. Local network access or an unsandboxed fallback is enabled. Review sandbox configuration, disable unnecessary egress and block fallback for sensitive tasks.
The same agent identity remains active after a project ends. Permissions were never given an owner or expiration. Assign ownership, set time limits, revoke tokens and remove stale roles.
Logs show a tool call but not the person who approved it. Approval and execution systems are not correlated. Record approver identity, authorization ID, payload, destination and execution ID together.
Users approve risky dialogs reflexively. The prompt is generic and hides the consequence. Show the exact data, account, destination and irreversible effect; require a deliberate confirmation.

Deployment checklist

  • Task purpose, owner, data, applications and allowed actions are documented.
  • The agent runs in a VM, separate account or other boundary appropriate to the data sensitivity.
  • Sensitive files, production credentials and critical resources are outside the environment unless required.
  • Applications, tools, paths and destinations are allowlisted; everything else is denied.
  • Administrative rights and standing credentials are absent; temporary elevation expires.
  • External sends, purchases, deletion, publication and security changes require human approval and deterministic validation.
  • Web pages, files, email and dialogs are handled as untrusted content.
  • Logs connect identity, scope, tools, resources, approvals and outputs.
  • Revocation, token invalidation and permission removal have been tested.
  • The configuration will be reviewed after product, workflow, data or environment changes.

The safest practical pattern is therefore layered: isolate the desktop, minimize the identity and data, constrain tools and network paths, gate consequential actions, distrust displayed content, and maintain a tested audit and revocation process. That combination limits both accidental exposure and deliberate manipulation without pretending that any single sandbox is a complete security boundary.
