Give every AI-agent workload a distinct, cryptographically verifiable identity, then authorize that identity with short-lived credentials limited to a specific audience, resource and action. Keep credentials out of prompts and agent memory. When an agent is stopped, revoke or expire its credentials and remove the grants, OAuth consents and brokered secrets that could still authorize it.
Authentication answers “which workload is calling?” Authorization answers “what may it do?” A safe design records both the agent that acted and the user or parent agent whose authority was delegated. No single protocol currently supplies every part of that design: workload-identity systems, OAuth/OIDC, lifecycle provisioning, policy engines and audit controls fit together as complementary components.
What an agent identity actually is
An agent identity is a machine-verifiable principal representing a running workload, not a name placed in a system prompt. It should be bound to an execution context that your platform can attest, such as a particular container, VM, cluster workload or tightly bounded deployment. The identity lets a resource server distinguish Agent A from Agent B even when both were launched by the same user.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Authorization is a separate decision. A user may delegate a narrow task to an agent, but the agent should not inherit every permission in the user’s account. A useful authorization record includes the agent identity, the user or parent agent, the purpose or task, the target resource, the allowed action, the audience, an expiry time and any delegation-depth limit.

The Cloud Native Computing Foundation’s March 23, 2026 guidance summarizes the goal: “By clearly distinguishing between user and agent identities and enforcing authentication, authorization, and trust boundaries, systems can minimize the risk of overprivileged agents, prevent lateral movement, and better support auditing and policy enforcement.” That article is industry guidance, not a normative protocol; your controls still need to be implemented and tested in the systems that enforce them.
Use a distinct identity boundary
Prefer one identity per agent instance
Issue a unique workload identity for each agent instance whenever practical. This prevents one compromised run from being indistinguishable from every other run and makes logs useful during incident response. The CNCF guidance specifically warns against shared identities and broad, static service accounts.
For high-risk, short-lived work, make the boundary even narrower: create an identity for each delegated task and retire it when the task ends. A per-deployment identity can be acceptable for a homogeneous, low-risk service, but document why instances may safely share it and ensure the platform prevents arbitrary impersonation.
Do not confuse a user identity with an agent identity
Preserve the user’s identity as the delegator while issuing a separate agent principal. The resource server should be able to answer both “which agent made this request?” and “whose authority allowed it?” Passing only a user token hides the workload that actually acted; passing only an agent token loses accountability for the delegation.
A reference architecture
- Register the workload. Define the agent’s identity boundary, intended tools, owners and maximum lifetime.
- Attest the runtime. A workload-identity provider verifies the running environment and issues cryptographic identity material.
- Mint delegated access. An authorization service exchanges the workload identity and an approved delegation for a short-lived token restricted by audience, scope, resource and duration.
- Broker external credentials. If a tool accepts only an API key or client secret, keep that secret in a vault or credential manager and release it through a controlled broker for the specific call.
- Authorize at the resource. The API checks the token, identity, delegation chain and policy at request time. Sensitive operations perform a fresh authorization check rather than trusting an old session.
- Log the decision. Record agent, delegator, task, resource, action, policy decision, result and correlation identifiers.
- Revoke completely. Disable further issuance, revoke or expire credentials, remove policy grants and OAuth consents, rotate exposed secrets and verify that downstream services reject the agent.
Implementation steps
1. Define the identity and delegation model
Write down which entities can delegate to which agents, how many parent-child hops are allowed and which actions always require user confirmation. Constrain the token audience so a credential minted for one API cannot be replayed at another. Limit scopes to the exact operations required and attach a resource identifier where the authorization system supports it.
For multi-agent systems, do not allow Agent A to present Agent B’s identity merely because A can call B. A parent agent should receive an explicitly delegated credential for a child task, with the parent and original user retained in the audit record.

2. Establish workload identity with attestation
SPIFFE is a common building block for this layer. Its standard defines X.509-SVID and JWT-SVID profiles for workload identity; these are mandatory profiles for SPIFFE implementations, although an operator may administratively disable a profile. The SPIFFE Workload API supplies identity material to an authorized workload without placing a private key in a prompt or source repository. See the SPIFFE standard overview and the SPIFFE Workload API specification.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Workload API supports streaming updates. A workload can receive a replacement identity, a revocation and newly introduced CA certificates without waiting for a process restart. That capability helps rotation, but it does not decide whether an agent may delete a database row or send an email; policy and authorization services still make those decisions.
Use an attestation rule that binds the issued identity to the intended runtime attributes. Review what happens when a container image, namespace, node or deployment label changes. If the provider cannot reliably distinguish two workloads, do not give both the same powerful identity.
3. Issue short-lived, automatically rotated credentials
Prefer certificates or JWT/OIDC access tokens that expire on the timescale of the task, with automatic rotation tied to the agent’s lifetime. Short lifetimes reduce the value of a stolen token and force stale sessions to stop working. Rotation must occur before expiry and must handle clock skew, retries and temporary issuer outages.
Use separate credentials for separate audiences. A token for a ticketing API should not also authorize a shell service. If a tool supports only a long-lived API key, do not copy it into the agent’s context; have a broker retrieve it just in time, restrict which agent and endpoint may request it, and rotate the key on a defined schedule.
4. Add user-delegated OAuth or OIDC access
OAuth 2.0/2.1 and OpenID Connect can carry delegated access, subject to the capabilities of the authorization server. Constrain the audience, scopes, resource, duration and delegation depth. Keep refresh tokens in a protected service rather than in agent memory, and require a new consent or step-up authentication for unusually sensitive actions.

The February 2026 NIST concept paper notes that MCP uses OAuth/OIDC and describes OAuth as a mechanism for generating, protecting and delivering authorization tokens. This describes a protocol role, not a guarantee that every MCP server enforces least privilege. Inspect each server’s scopes, audience validation and revocation behavior.
5. Broker credentials for legacy tools
Many SaaS and infrastructure tools still require an API key or client secret. Store those values in a secrets manager and expose a narrow broker operation such as “create an issue in project X” instead of returning the raw secret to the model. The broker can enforce agent identity, user delegation, destination, rate limits and logging, then call the upstream service itself.
A broker does not magically reduce an upstream account’s privileges. Create a separate upstream account or token with the smallest practical permissions, and make the broker deny operations outside the approved policy. Rotate the upstream secret after suspected exposure and when the associated agent is decommissioned.
6. Re-authorize sensitive actions
Check authorization at the boundary where an irreversible or high-impact action occurs: deleting data, changing access controls, transferring money, publishing content or sending a message to an external party. A login performed at the beginning of a long-running session is not sufficient evidence that the final action remains allowed.
Require a fresh token, policy decision or human confirmation when risk changes. Include the current resource and action in the decision input so a token issued for one object cannot be replayed against another.
7. Make logs attributable and useful
At minimum, log:
- the agent identity and runtime or deployment identifier;
- the user, service or parent agent that delegated authority;
- task or purpose, target resource, action and token audience;
- policy version, decision, timestamp and outcome;
- credential issuance, rotation, denial and revocation events; and
- the correlation ID linking model output, tool call and downstream request.
Protect logs from alteration and restrict who can read sensitive token metadata. Record enough context to investigate an incident without storing raw API keys, refresh tokens or unnecessary personal data.

How the main standards fit together
No universal “AI-agent identity standard” has been finalized. NIST’s Accelerating the Adoption of Software and AI Agent Identity and Authorization: Concept Paper, published in February 2026, describes a planned enterprise project rather than a final standard. Its areas of interest include identity, policy-based access control, delegation, linking user identities to agents for accountability, and logging and transparency. The initial scope covers enterprise use cases and excludes external agents from untrusted sources.
| Building block | What it contributes | What it does not provide by itself |
|---|---|---|
| SPIFFE/SPIRE | Attested workload identity and X.509-SVID or JWT-SVID credentials; the Workload API can stream updates. | It does not define every application permission or business-policy decision. |
| OAuth 2.0/2.1 and OIDC | Delegated authorization tokens, client and resource-server flows, and user identity claims. | It does not ensure least-privilege scopes, correct audience checks or complete revocation in a particular deployment. |
| SCIM | A potential way to create, update and revoke agent identities across systems. | NIST notes that SCIM does not itself provide authentication or authorization. |
| NGAC and policy engines | Fine-grained, policy-based access decisions and relationships between subjects, resources and actions. | They need a trustworthy subject identity and operational credential lifecycle. |
| MCP authorization profiles | A protocol context in which OAuth/OIDC can be used for server access. | MCP does not eliminate the need for workload identity, delegation limits or resource-side policy. |
NIST lists these approaches as relevant practices to evaluate, not as a single mandated stack. Select components that interoperate with your identity provider, policy stores and resource servers, and document where a control is advisory rather than enforced.
Comparing implementation patterns
| Pattern | Identity boundary | Credential lifecycle | Strengths | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SPIFFE/SPIRE workload identity plus a policy engine | Usually per workload instance or deployment; can be narrowed to a task. | Certificate or JWT material is issued and rotated by the workload API; streaming updates can carry revocations. | Strong service-to-service attribution and portability across clusters when federation is configured. | Authorization rules, user delegation and cleanup of external grants remain separate work. |
| OAuth/OIDC delegation | Agent client plus a user or parent-agent delegation record. | Short-lived access tokens, with refresh and consent handled by the authorization server. | Well-understood audience and scope model for APIs. | Implementations differ in refresh-token storage, revocation latency and scope quality; a user token alone hides the workload. |
| Credential broker for API-key tools | Broker authenticates the agent and maps it to an approved upstream credential. | Raw key stays in a vault; broker retrieves it for controlled calls and rotates it separately. | Works with legacy APIs and can centralize policy and audit logging. | The upstream key may still be broad; the broker becomes a critical enforcement component. |
| Vendor-managed agent identity | Defined by that platform’s agent resource and principal model. | Platform-specific certificates, tokens and rotation behavior. | Lower integration effort inside one cloud or control plane. | Portability, cross-cloud federation and grant cleanup depend on vendor behavior; do not generalize one platform’s lifetime or revocation semantics. |
Evaluate each option against six questions: Can shared identities and impersonation be prevented? Are credentials bound to the runtime and automatically rotated? Can scopes, audiences, resources and delegation depth be constrained? How quickly do relying services stop accepting a revoked credential? Are policy grants and secrets removed as well? Do logs identify both agent and delegator without excessive operational burden?
A concrete platform example—and its boundary
Google Cloud’s current Agent Identity documentation, accessed October 13, 2026, describes assigning each agent a SPIFFE ID and X.509 certificate, integrating that identity with IAM and audit logs, and using an authentication manager for external OAuth or API-key credentials. In that service, agent X.509 certificates are valid for 24 hours and are automatically kept current. The 24-hour period is a vendor-specific implementation detail, not a general recommendation for every agent.
The same documentation warns that deleting an agent does not remove IAM bindings that reference its principal. Those bindings become inactive grants until an administrator removes them. Treat this as a model for a common failure mode: deleting a workload record is not the same as revoking every permission in every policy store.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDesign a complete revocation runbook
Write and test the runbook before production launch. A practical sequence is:

- Stop new issuance. Disable the agent principal, workload registration or delegation source so replacement credentials cannot be minted.
- Revoke active credentials. Revoke certificates or tokens where supported, and wait for resource servers to reject them. For systems that rely only on expiry, confirm the maximum remaining lifetime.
- Remove grants. Delete IAM, policy-engine, database, queue and filesystem permissions associated with the agent. Search for inactive bindings that still reference its principal.
- Withdraw user consent. Revoke OAuth grants, refresh tokens and parent-agent delegations.
- Rotate dependent secrets. Rotate any API keys, client secrets or signing material the agent could have accessed, especially if exposure cannot be ruled out.
- Invalidate sessions and caches. Clear gateway sessions, token caches and connection leases that might otherwise continue to authorize requests.
- Check disconnected systems. When a resource server reconnects, verify that it receives the denial and no queued action is replayed under the old identity.
- Verify and document. Attempt representative calls with the old credentials, inspect audit logs for denials, and record the time and evidence of each control.
The cited standards and platform documentation do not establish one universal revocation-propagation time. Measure it in your own topology, including caches, asynchronous queues, offline nodes and third-party APIs.
Common designs that fail
One static service account for every agent
All actions become indistinguishable, compromise enables lateral movement, and removing one agent can disrupt unrelated workloads. Replace it with unique identities and narrowly scoped delegation.
Secrets in prompts, code or memory
Models can reproduce or transmit context, and logs may capture it. Keep private keys, refresh tokens and API keys in a vault or broker; return only the minimum operation result to the agent.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Using a user token as the agent identity
This obscures which workload acted and often grants more authority than the task needs. Carry separate user-delegator and agent-subject claims, then enforce both.
Checking authorization only at login
Long-running agents outlive policy changes and user consent. Re-authorize sensitive calls with current resource, action and delegation data.
Assuming certificate expiry removes permissions
Expired identity material may stop authentication while IAM bindings, OAuth grants or upstream API keys remain ready for a replacement credential. Clean each store explicitly.
Allowing unrestricted agent-to-agent delegation
A child can become a path to privileges the parent never intended. Cap delegation depth, restrict audiences and resources, and preserve the full delegation chain in logs.
Trusting an unverified external agent
NIST’s initial project scope excludes external agents from untrusted sources. If your system accepts them, establish an admission boundary, attest or sandbox the runtime, constrain tools and data, and require explicit user approval for high-impact actions.
Operational checklist
- Every agent instance or documented deployment boundary has a unique principal.
- The principal is issued only after runtime or workload attestation.
- Credentials are short-lived, automatically rotated and audience-bound.
- Prompts, model context, source code and ordinary logs contain no raw secrets.
- User delegation, agent identity, resource, action, scope and expiry are separately represented.
- Parent-child delegation has a fixed maximum depth and cannot silently impersonate another agent.
- High-impact operations trigger a fresh authorization decision or human confirmation.
- Audit logs identify agent, delegator, task, decision and outcome.
- Decommissioning revokes credentials, removes policy grants, withdraws OAuth consent and rotates dependent secrets.
- Revocation has been tested against caches, queues, offline services and third-party APIs, with measured results.
The durable pattern is therefore identity first, delegated authorization second, and revocation as an end-to-end operational process. SPIFFE/SPIRE, OAuth/OIDC, SCIM, policy engines and credential brokers can supply pieces of it; your system remains responsible for joining those pieces without shared identities, hidden delegation or orphaned grants.
